American Horror Story: Interconnections of the Seasons. The new season will be "sexy"

The fourth season of American Horror Story ended relatively recently, and while everyone is waiting for Ryan Murphy to announce the theme of the fifth season (it will happen on March 16 at the annual Paley Fest conference), it would be interesting to dig into all the released seasons and find some connections between them. Maybe all the seasons are similar not only in the cast.

From Murder House to Freak Circus, Murphy left a lot of clues and clues, from repeated character names to references to the same cities/states (moreover, every time Ryan scattered Easter eggs throughout the episodes indicating the theme of the next season ). Murphy has long made it clear that all the seasons are connected to some degree. Now let's find out together what exactly:

ATTENTION! SPOILER AREA!

1. Montgomery.

Ryan Murphy doesn't seem like the kind of person who accidentally resorts to reusing the last name of seemingly unrelated characters. Thus, one can only speculate that Dr. Charles Montgomery (Matt Ross), the famous "star surgeon" from the first season, had some connection with Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) from the third season. In 1922, Dr. Montgomery and his wife Nora (Lili Rabe) moved to Los Angeles, where we met Madison in 2013. Relatives? Sure, the last name Montgomery is probably not uncommon, especially in Los Angeles, but it's not just that on this show, so why not.

2. Massachusetts.

The state of Massachusetts somehow manages to resurface in every season of American Horror Story. Season 1 - The Harmon family moved to Los Angeles from Boston, and the head of the family, Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott), returned there for a while. Season 2 - Briakliff Hospital was built in Massachusetts in 1908 as a department for tuberculosis patients, then, already in 1962, the hospital came under the control of the Catholic Church. In the third season, we are returned to Salem (a city in Essex County, Massachusetts), where the famous "witch hunt" took place. In addition, Queenie mentioned that she was a direct descendant of Tituba, one of the first witches arrested. In flashbacks from the fourth season, we saw that in 1936 Elsa (Jessica Lange) worked in a circus in Boston, and in 1952 Pepper (Naomi Grossman) lived with her sister Rita in Sudbury, Massachusetts.

3. Jack Colquitt.

Remember that LAPD detective from the first season who came to Ben a couple of times to report the disappearance of his patient? Remember his name? His name was Detective Jack Colquitt (Jeffrey Rivas). If you also carefully watched the Freak Circus, then you probably noticed that the detective who opened the case against Elsa and her freaks in connection with the disappearance of the police officer (who had put Jimmy in jail) was also called Jack Colquitt (although he played his already another actor). Time travel? Or are aliens from the Asylum involved? Only Ryan Murphy knows. But there is something in it.

4. Pepper.

Pepper is one of the few obvious connections between seasons. For the first time we saw the heroine Naomi Grossman in Briercliff in 1964, but in the "Circus of Freaks" we again met the beloved character, but not as a patient in a psychiatric hospital, but in the role of circus actress Elsa Mars. The fourth season told us the whole story of Pepper's life before Briarcliff. "Circus of Freaks" takes us back to 1962, and we find ourselves at the moment when Pepper is taken to Briercliff, where we meet sister Mary Eunice (Lili Rabe), already familiar to us. That's it, the loop is closed, everything is in place: Elsa Mars on the cover of LIFE, Pepper in the asylum, and Satan has not yet reached Mary Eunice.

5. Hans Grouper.

Another clear connection between the two seasons that everyone is sure of. The penultimate episode of "Circus of Freaks" revealed that Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) from the "Asylum", aka Hans Grouper, was the same German who in 1932 deprived Elsa Mars of both legs (by the way, both in the second season and in the fourth young Hans Arthur was played by the son of James Cromwell - John). It turns out that in the 64th Hans moved to America, called himself Arthur, but he did not refuse the habit of cutting off limbs.

6. Psychopathic killers.

Fact, a little far-fetched, but oh well. Murphy created a bunch of killers on the run, so you can't help but wonder if there's any parallel between them (you can also turn on your fantasy and imagine that they might have heard something about each other). First there was Tate Langdon (Evan Peters) from Murder House, a misunderstood teenager who killed 15 of his classmates in 1994. The second season was teeming with maniacs, from Bloody Face (a.k.a. Oliver Thredson, played by Zachary Quinto) and his son Johnny Morgan (Dylan McDermott), to copycats in the modern time period. And in the "Asylum" was Lee Emerson (Ian McShane) - Santa Claus, who killed 18 people on Christmas. Then the fourth season gave us a couple of psychopaths: Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) and Dandy Mott (Finn Wittrock), who at the end of the series killed almost the entire circus troupe in one fell swoop (the style of the murder is very reminiscent of Tate Langdon).

7. Children kill their mothers.

The show's fandom knows that American Horror Story is rife with the problem of "fathers and sons" (in this case, mothers). Relations between Constance (Jessica Lange) and her children in the first season, psychological trauma due to the mother in the second ... It happened that the kids ended up killing their mothers: in "Coven" Kyle (Evan Peters) killed the mother who raped him ; in "The Circus" Bette (the "kind" head of Sarah Paulson) plunged a knife into her darling without batting an eyelid; Dandy (Finn Wittrock) also decided to keep up with his colleagues, and even then bathed in the blood of his mother Gloria (Frances Conroy). Was Murphy trying to combine all the seasons in this way, adding a similar line of relationship with mothers to them? Or is he having a crisis of ideas? Perhaps psychologists also have an opinion on this matter.

8. Wives kill their husbands.

Obviously, murder is the main recurring theme throughout the anthology, but a special place is given to the line when the wife kills her husband, usually for infidelity. The first was Constance (Jessica Lange), who murdered her husband in 1983 after catching him in bed with red-haired housekeeper Moira (Alexandra Breckenridge). Then in the same, the first, season, Nora Montgomery (Lili Rabe) kills her faithful, after which she herself says goodbye to life. Another member of the Coven was Joan Ramsey (Patty LuPone), the witches' neighbor who murdered her husband for treason by launching a swarm of bees into his car.

9. Los Angeles.

Another geographical point that appears in several seasons. This is the main location of Murder House, the birthplace of Madison Montgomery (she went to the Witch Academy after the murder of a Hollywood director), and, finally, this is the city where Elsa Mars from Freak Circus eventually moved to, fulfilling her old dream.

10. Florida.

This sunny state is another reason for discussion among the fans of the series. Freak Circus is set in Florida, and Vivienne Harmon (Connie Britton) from the first season, in turn, mentioned that her family is from Florida. One user from reddit "a suggested the theory that the doctor from the fourth season (who was observed by Desiree Dupree (Angela Bassett) and who also allegedly killed himself) may be a relative (grandfather?) of Vivienne. In addition to this theory, let's add the fact that her daughter mentions doctor that she came from Boston (from where Vivienne Harmon's family moves to the ill-fated house from the first season).

11 Sarah Paulson Survival...

And television.

The only real winner in this American Horror Story meat grinder is Sarah Paulson and her characters, who always have a happy ending and always have some semblance of interaction with television. Season 1 - Billie Dean Howard mentioned her upcoming reality show (can we please have a spin-off?); season 2 - Lana Winters told her incredible rescue story in a TV interview; season 3 - a report about the new Supreme Cordelia was shown on local news. In the fourth season, there was no direct participation, but still: happy and surviving Bette and Dott go into the sunset, enjoy a new life in a cozy house and watch the Elsa Mars show, which is played on TV on Halloween. In short, the idea for the fifth season is to take Paulson, give her her own reality show with maniacs, get a series within a series, profit.

1. The new chapter "Apocalypse" (before that there were rumors that it would be called "Radioactive") starts on September 13th.

2. This will be the first crossover in the history of the project, combining the first and third seasons of "American Horror Story", that is, "Murder House" and "Coven", respectively.

3. Jessica Lange will return to the show for the first time since season 4. The intrigue was who exactly she would play in the new episodes, because in past seasons the actress appeared in different images. But now it is known that Lang will play Constance Langdon from Murder House, while Sarah Paulson will be reincarnated as three characters: the already played Cordelia Goode and Billy Dean Howard, as well as an unknown viewer Vinabelle.

4. Be sure to return to the series Evan Peters, Kathy Bates (the closure of the series "Broken" allowed her to re-enter the ranks after a year of absence), Taissa Farmiga (Zoe Benson), Gabourey Sidibe (Quinnie), Emma Roberts (Madison Montgomery), Lily Rabe (Misty Day), Frances Conroy (Myrtle Snow) and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. They will be joined by Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton. Ryan Murphy himself names Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters as the three main stars of the season.

5. Sarah Paulson will make her directing debut with the sixth episode of the eighth season (in which, by the way, Jessica Lange will appear). Evan Peters will also direct one of the episodes.

6. The plot of the crossover is built around Michael Langdon, a boy who is considered the embodiment of the Antichrist. In the first season, he was still a baby, but in the eighth he is an adult male played by Cody Fern (he could be seen in a minor role in American Crime Story).

7. The legendary Joan Collins will play the grandmother of the hero Evan Peters. Murphy himself confirms that he also invited Anjelica Huston in the new season, but she refused. According to Variety, Peters' character is a stylist by trade. As an indirect proof of this assumption, one can count photograph actor in curlers.

8. The action of the eighth season will unfold in the near future, to be precise, 18 months after April 6, 2018. Fans of theories calculated the approximate date - October 6, 2019, that is, exactly 58 years after John F. Kennedy's memorable speech. After it, the Americans began to build bomb shelters more often, expecting the imminent outcome of a nuclear war with the USSR. Moreover, as producer Alexis Martin Woodall assures, the plot starts from the “end of the world”.

9. Ryan Murphy thinks that the action of all seasons of American History is combined with the nine circles of Dante's Hell depicted in The Divine Comedy. Only lust and violence are not covered, so it is probably worth waiting for some of these topics to be revealed in the Apocalypse.

10. Filming started on June 16, 2018. The last season's production, dubbed "The Cult", took place in the same month last year.

Sarah Paulson is an American actress who has been both on the stage of the theater and on the set. Debuting on television in 1994, she became known for her roles in the series Law & Order, American Horror Story, Grey's Anatomy and many other notable films.

Childhood and youth

There are gaps in the biography of the popular actress, unfortunately, information about Paulson's childhood and youth is extremely scarce. It is known that Sarah Katherine Paulson was born on December 17, 1974 in the city of Tampa, located in the sunny state of Florida. The future star in the firmament of cinema grew up and was brought up in an average family, her parents Ekaterina Gordon and Douglas Lyle Paulson divorced when the girl was five years old.

After breaking off relations with her husband, Ekaterina moved to New York with her little daughter, but during the summer holidays, Sarah stayed in Florida with her father. Paulson admitted that she began to be interested in acting since early childhood. In the largest city in the United States, Sarah began attending a Brooklyn public school and did not miss the opportunity to participate in impromptu New York performances, trying to capture even the most minor supporting role.

After Sarah realized that she wanted to connect her life once and for all with acting, she, having received a certificate of secondary education, began to send out documents to the desired colleges and lyceums. The purposeful girl achieved her goal and continued her studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she honed her artistic abilities.

Movies

Sarah Paulson was born under a lucky star because she didn't have to wander through auditions, receiving multiple rejections from filmmakers and TV shows. So, having made her debut in the police procedural "Law and Order" (1994), the ambitious girl won an important role in the cult multi-part horror film "The Sheriff from the Underworld" (1995-1996). This series tells about "a part of that force that always wants evil and always does good" - the sheriff (Gary Cole) of a small town, who is also a treacherous snake tempter.

In 1997, Paulson appeared in the drama Levitation, and a year later she starred in the adventure film Long Way Home, which tells the story of a pensioner who went on an exciting hitchhiking trip from Kansas to California.

From 1999 to 2001, Sarah Paulson starred in the television series Jack and Jill and also starred in Steve Rash's comedy The Heist (1999). The new age for the brown-eyed actress began with Nancy Myers' famous fantasy melodrama What Women Want (2000). The plot of the picture revolves around a Don Juan from Chicago, Nick Marshall, who, after an accident, became the owner of a superpower and learned to read women's minds.

True, the protagonist of the film regards this gift not as a gift of fate, but as a severe punishment. In addition to Sarah, the brilliant cast of the picture included Alan Alda and other famous Hollywood stars. In 2003, Sarah Paulson appeared in the romantic comedy Fuck Love, where she was lucky enough to work on the same film set with Rachel Dratch.

The talented actress also appeared in the films Swimmers (2005), Mission Serenity (2005), Obscene Bettie Page (2005), Diggers (2006) and Griffin and the Phoenix: On the Edge of Happy (2006) . In 2006, Sarah got the lead role in the comedy Christmas Wedding. The main character of the film, Emily, by all means wants to perpetuate her relationship by marriage on a winter holiday, but force majeure situations can disrupt all the wedding plans of a young girl at any time.

Then Paulson reincarnated as a TV presenter in the series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006-2007), for which she was nominated for the prestigious Golden Globe Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Later, Sarah Paulson played the role of Dr. Ellen Dolan in Frank Miller's famous big-budget action movie The Avenger (2008). The film plunges the viewer into the story of the superhero Danny (), who, wearing a mask, begins to fight the underworld under cover of night. Also other famous actors played in this action-packed picture.

In 2009, the American actress starred in the TV series Cupid, where she appeared before the eyes of viewers in the form of psychologist Claire, and in 2011, together with John Hawkes, she played in the drama Martha, Marcy May, Marlene.

The popular anthology series American Horror Story, which began airing on November 5, 2011, earned Sarah Paulson four Emmy nominations, as well as Saturn and Critics' Choice Television Awards. This multi-part film for those who like to tickle their nerves, fell in love with viewers because each season of the series begins with a chilling mini-story that has an original beginning and end and is supposedly based on real events.

So, for example, the first season of the horror, in which they played, and tells about an ominous killer house, while the actions of the second take place in a mental hospital.

In the fourth season of American Horror Story - Freak Show - Sarah Paulson reincarnated as not one, but two characters - Siamese twins Bette and Dot Tatler, who have one body and two heads. And if Bette is a dreamy person who constantly longs for new adventures, then Dott is a conservative lover of a quiet and measured life.

In 2012, Sarah Paulson starred in the drama Fairhaven and also starred in the detective Forever. In addition, the slender actress (Sarah's height is 168 cm and weight is 54 kg) took part in the films 12 Years a Slave (2013), Twitter Kills (2014), Carol (2015) and in the drama Runaway "(2015), where the famous actor played the main role.

Personal life

It's no secret that Sarah Paulson is bisexual, at least the actress does not hide her relationship with the ladies from the public eye. Journalists know that at one time Sarah met with playwright Tracy Letts, to whom she was engaged. But after a certain period of time, the lovers broke up. When Sarah announced that she was paired with a woman, many fans were sure that her girlfriend was a singer.

But in fact, Paulson became the beloved actress Cherry Jones, who positions herself as an open lesbian. Women did not hide from the eyes of the paparazzi and often appeared together at social events. Sarah and Cherry's relationship failed in 2009. Sarah's next chosen one was the American actress and Emmy Award winner Taylor Holland, who is 32 years older than her soulmate.

Sarah Paulson is an open person who willingly communicates with the media and responds to the comments of subscribers on social networks. On the official page in

10 About the Harmons' mansion - a real-life building located in Los Angeles and known as the Rosenheim House. It was built in 1908 by Alfred Rosenheim, president of the Los Angeles branch of the American Architectural Institute and one of the city's most influential architects. The pilot episode was filmed in this house, for the filming of subsequent episodes, scenery was built in the studio pavilions, exactly reproducing the interiors of the Rosenheim mansion.

11 One of the biggest mysteries in American Horror Story is season 3, who was in charge of this coven? For many viewers, this remained a mystery until the very end of the season. Let's sum up the results of the conference at the Comic-Con festival, announcing the release of the series in October 2015.

Lady Gaga was eager to take part in the creation of the new season. Back in February, the famous pop singer was set to appear in a cameo role on the show, and I guess no one was more excited than herself. Murphy mentioned that Gaga wrote to him about her love for American Horror Story and asked about any chance to play a role there.

Lady Gaga

“I answered: YES.CAPS CAPS…” — said the director. “It was the best request: “Please wait for Gaga,” and she was on the phone and could not act any nicer.”

“She said: I want to be evil. And I said, okay, you've come to the right place."

But, a possible disappointment for the fans… Lady Gaga won't sing.

The musical numbers were familiar to us in previous seasons of the series, but according to the director, the new season will be an exception.

But we can admire Gaga, dressed in the usual eccentric and defiant outfits. Paying tribute to the well-established image of the singer in the media, the scriptwriters chose a fashion-related role for Lady Gaga.

Sarah Paulson's character is going to die one way or another.

Sarah Paulson

Some character names have been confirmed at Comic-Con: Matt Bomer will play Donovan, Kathy Bates will play Iris, Angela Bassett's character will be Ramona, Evan Peters will play Mr March, and Sarah Paulson will play Hypnosally Sally.

Despite the attention-grabbing name, Paulson's character would not last long on the show. In previous seasons, her characters managed to survive until the end of the show, but according to the director, Paulson's luck ran out on this. The incredible death of Subcutaneous Sally is one of the main trump cards of the new season.

Jessica Lange is not coming back.

Jessica Lange

In previous seasons of American Horror Story, the actress played the most prominent roles, but she will not appear in the new season. The departure of the show's main star was supposed to create a gaping hole in the script, but Murphy said the show now feels more like a slim ensemble with no lead character:

“I think the main difference this season is that now we are not moving forward only because of the character of Jessica Lange. This year we have more male roles and male characters. The West Bentley part is really big, the Matt Bomer part is also big. Evan Peters and Finn Wittrock made a huge difference."

“This does not mean that female roles have faded into the background. I mean, Kathy Bates and Gaga and Paulson and Angela Bassett played significant roles. But I guess we've found a really different way of storytelling this year."

The six-story hotel was built in Los Angeles.

Season 5 set of American Horror Story

A large set representing a hotel was erected in LA. Photographs from the location revealed that the building was decorated in a 1920s art deco style with gleaming marble columns, crystal chandeliers and an energetic staff dressed in classic red uniforms.

The new season will overlap with the previous ones.

Shot from the 3rd season of "American Horror Story: Coven"

Although each new season introduces different characters interacting with each other in completely different locations, some fans have found connections between them, suggesting that the action takes place "in the same world."

The director confirms these guesses, saying that some of the characters already familiar to us may appear at the Hotel as guests.

The new season will be "sexy".

Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson at Comic-Con

While hosting a conference call at Comic-Con, Paulson assured fans that the Hotel would be sensual. Evan Peters insisted on the "sexyness" of the new season.
