Time of the first: to burn and not to burn

January 7 marks the 90th anniversary of Komsomol leader Yevgeny Tyazhelnikov - he led the Central Committee of the Komsomol for almost a decade, from 1968 to 1977. It was the time of the development of virgin lands of Kazakhstan, Altai and the Far East, the development of oil and gas fields in Siberia, shock Komsomol construction projects - Atommash, the Volga and Kama automobile plants, BAM ...

With the help of Komsomol members, cities grew in the Far North, and highways were laid through the taiga and swamps.

Yevgeny Tyazhelnikov still remains in the ranks, is engaged in social and scientific work, lives with care for the youth. And he believes that the Komsomol is alive as long as there is a Komsomol brotherhood.

His comrades-in-arms and friends spoke about Yevgeny Mikhailovich's enthusiasm and dedication, his disinterestedness and ability to make friends.

The first secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee (1968-77) Yevgeny Tyazhelnikov, a member of the organizing committee "Komsomol-95" in the editorial office of "MK" in 2013.

“If only my native country would live…”

“We know that you will live better than us, accomplish feats in the global galaxy and make our Earth beautiful. We are a little jealous of you, who are celebrating the centenary of the Soviet Motherland. But we know that you will envy us, our restless young generation. We had a clear goal, a great future, a lot of things to do. There is where to put your hands, mind, heart, energy. And that is our happiness."

This is a letter from the participants of the second regional gathering of Komsomol members and youth, which took place in the summer of 1967 in Arkhangelsk. They appeal to the future generation, their peers. The message from the past has been kept for 50 years and has only recently been published.

Friends of Yevgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov say that he is from the same breed of "fierce and unlike, despised penny comfort." He joined the Komsomol during the war, in 1943. At the age of 15, he helped seriously wounded soldiers and officers in the hospital to write letters home. He was elected secretary of the school Komsomol organization. His "alma mater" is the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical Institute, from which he graduated in 1950 with honors. And eleven years later, having defended his Ph.D. thesis, Tyazhelnikov became the rector of the institute, one of the youngest university leaders.

The talents of a scientist and an effective manager were noticed, and in May 1964 he was sent to work as head of the ideological department of the Chelyabinsk regional committee of the CPSU. In the same year he was elected secretary of the regional committee.

Yevgeny Mikhailovich was at party work for four years, and then fate gave him a second Komsomol youth. In March 1968, under the pretext of preparing for a trip to Bulgaria, Tyazhelnikov was summoned to Moscow and unexpectedly led through the offices of all the secretaries of the Central Committee. And in conclusion, invited to a conversation with Brezhnev. These were the shows. And in early June, Suslov introduced the new first secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, Yevgeny Tyazhelnikov, to the leadership of the Komsomol.

He remained the main Komsomol member of the country for almost ten years, from 1968 to 1977. As associates of Yevgeny Mikhailovich say, he did not work professionally in the Komsomol, but lived in the Komsomol. It was where the pulse of the country beat, its power was created.

Then for five years, from 1977 to 1982, Tyazhelnikov was the head of the propaganda department of the Central Committee of the CPSU. As friends recall, he was known as an independent person, not sacrificing his own opinion to please his superiors. In particular, at his suggestion, the disgraced fashion designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev, who fell under the supervision of the KGB and was not allowed to travel abroad, was instructed to design the Olympics-80. Tyazhelnikov introduced the innovative fashion designer to the Minister of Public Services Ivan Dudenkov. And then he helped turn the House of Life on Prospekt Mira into a Fashion House, where Vyacheslav Zaitsev became artistic director.

Evgeny Mikhailovich became the only person who, in the most difficult time for Vyacheslav Zaitsev, believed in him. He forced me to join the Union of Artists, insisted that the fashion designer write a book, and even assigned two journalists to help in this work. As a result, the book "Fashion is so changeable" appeared.

Evgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov and his wife Inna Vasilievna are friends with designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev to this day.

And then, in 1982, with the death of Brezhnev, personnel changes began. Yury Andropov, who had headed the KGB for 15 years, became General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU. They joked in the country: "The Central Committee of the CPSU was renamed the Cheka of the CPSU."

Yevgeny Tyazhelnikov left in 1983 as the ambassador of the Soviet Union to Romania. Many to this day believe that it was, in fact, an honorary exile. Yevgeny Mikhailovich worked as an embassy until 1990, for seven years. And he was recalled after the anti-communist revolution in Romania, when the Ceausescu regime fell, and power passed into the hands of the interim government of the National Salvation Front. Tyazhelnikov was transferred to the disposal of the USSR Foreign Ministry, and soon the Minister of Foreign Affairs Shevardnadze dismissed him.

On January 7, Evgeny Mikhailovich will turn 90 years old. Unfortunately, he is not currently giving interviews. On the eve of the anniversary, the legendary Komsomol leader was told by his friends and associates to MK.

“The main thing, guys, is not to grow old with your heart”

Igor Mikhailovich Ilyinsky(worked as the head of the department of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, director of the Research Center at the Higher Komsomol School, the Institute of Youth, since 1994 - rector of the Moscow University for the Humanities):

Evgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov is a legendary figure. In Soviet times, his name was on the lips of millions of young people. This is a highly educated and very ideological person. He is an excellent orator with a phenomenal, photographic memory.

I remember such a case. I worked as the head of the sector of the regions of the North-Western department of the Komsomol bodies of the Komsomol Central Committee, which included Leningrad, Kaliningrad, Karelia, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Pskov, Novgorod, Komi ASSR ... And it is symbolic that the first business trip, where Evgeny Tyazhelnikov went after his appointment, was Leningrad . Boris Nikolaevich Pastukhov called me and said that an asset would be gathered, and I had to prepare for the speech.

I worked in the office until late. Sitting on a chair with his back to the door, he heard that someone came in, but continued to write. Then he turned around - there was Tyazhelnikov. My surprise knew no bounds. Never before had the first secretaries of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League walked around the offices ... Yevgeny Mikhailovich extended his hand, said: “Here, I decided to get acquainted before the trip ...” And he began to chase me, asking about the yield in the region for bread, about milk yield. He was very seriously preparing for the trip.

We arrived in Leningrad, we barely had time to check into a hotel, when Grigory Vasilievich Romanov took Tyazhelnikov to his place, and I stayed to finish writing a speech for him. (Now I would be called a speechwriter). It turned out to be quite a large text. Leaving for the meeting, Evgeny Mikhailovich remarked: “Give me the text tomorrow at 7 am.” I also thought, when will he have time to read it? And now we come to a huge hall, about a thousand people are sitting. Yevgeny Mikhailovich just glances at the page, as if taking a picture of it, and then speaks for five minutes, moreover, purely according to the text. He had such a phenomenal memory. Everyone was amazed by his oratorical skills. The audience gave him a standing ovation. Those present in the hall understood that this is how the Komsomol leader should speak.

Let me give you one more example. As deputy head of the department of Komsomol organs of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, in addition to territorial organizations, I also supervised Ukraine, Moldova, Central Asia, Transcaucasia, and was engaged in the training of Komsomol personnel. And this is about 150 thousand freed workers and an asset - about 3 million people.

I was instructed to prepare a document "On measures to improve the level of training and retraining of Komsomol personnel." And then Tyazhelnikov calls: “What kind of document did you give me? He is about measures, but where are the measures? But the thing was that all the papers went through the head of the general department, and he wrote his note to all the documents, where he noted what was good and what was bad. After reading his resume, Tyazhelnikov decided to talk to me. I felt offended, I could not stand it, I said: "You, Evgeny Mikhailovich, are wrong." He was surprised: "How so?" And then I suggested: "Come on, you open your text, and I open mine." I read one of the points and ask: “Is this a measure?” He agrees: "Measure." I read further and ask: “Is this a measure?” He echoes: “Measure”, and suggests: “You, Igor Mikhailovich, go, and I will look at everything carefully again. He calls me an hour later and says: "Excuse me, please, I read it, you have an excellent document." This behavior was not typical for hardware workers.

Evgeny Mikhailovich is a very intelligent and educated person. For almost ten years as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, he managed to do a lot of good things both for the Komsomol and for the youth.

The Higher Komsomol School is a man-made monument to Tyazhelnikov. It was he who came up with the idea of creating the VKSh. Then this educational institution was transformed into the Institute of Youth and further - into the Moscow University for the Humanities. Now I am the rector of Moscow State University. Nothing new has been built here. Everything was previously erected by the Komsomol, with Komsomol funds. We just put all the buildings in order, repaired classrooms, classrooms and corridors. A portrait of Yevgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov hangs in our gallery of honor, we approved his nominal scholarship.

Even when the Soviet Union was destroyed, he remained at his post, lived and now lives with care for the youth, actively maintains ties with Komsomol veterans. He is a very indifferent, restless person. All the time he comes up with something, contacts the authorities, initiates letters addressed to the president, communicates closely with the mayor of Moscow. With his participation, for example, it was possible to revive student construction teams. He acted as one of the initiators and founders of the All-Russian public organization "Students of Komsomol - My Patronymic", which united veterans of the Komsomol and representatives of various youth organizations.

I don't even know if he's sick or not. I don't think he ever gets sick. Always on your feet, always on the move, always setting goals.

We are constantly in touch with him, we are friends with families, we meet either in the theater or in a restaurant. Evgeny Mikhailovich and his wife Inna Vasilievna are avid theatergoers. At the Bolshoi they are familiar with all the leading ballerinas and dancers. Among their friends are Alexandra Pakhmutova and Nikolai Dobronravov.

"Do you hear, time - BAM is buzzing!"

Viktor Maksimovich Mishin(was the first secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee from 1982 to 1986):

When Yevgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov came in 1968 to the post of first secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, we, frankly, treated him with some apprehension. He came from party work, was the secretary of the Chelyabinsk regional committee of the CPSU, oversaw issues of ideology. But we must give him his due, in a short time he proved that he is a real leader, mentor, generator of ideas.

When in 1973 Yevgeny Mikhailovich began to agitate me to go to work as head of the department of working youth in the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, I resisted for a long time. In the Moscow City Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, where I was secretary, we had a very friendly atmosphere and a wonderful team. And here they offer a department of working youth, where the salary is higher, and the "turntable" - the government telephone ... But I did not agree for a long time. It was only later that I realized how wise Tyazhelnikov was when he insisted on my transfer. By the time he recommended me for the post of first secretary of the Moscow City Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, I managed to go through an excellent school.

Yevgeny Mikhailovich and I began to study BAM together, I - as the head of the department of working youth of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, he - as the first secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League. Together we went to the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Alexei Nikolaevich Kosygin. On April 27, 1974, the first All-Union shock Komsomol detachment named after the XVII Congress of the Komsomol set off from Moscow to build the Baikal-Amur Mainline. 600 Komsomol members from all the Union republics, as well as from Moscow and Leningrad, went to lay the highway. The attention to BAM was huge. To get into the detachment, it was necessary to withstand a serious competition. Evgeny Mikhailovich knew each of the pioneers, followed their fate.

Tyazhelnikov is a very demanding leader and an attentive person. For example, he taught me how to work with documents. Everyone knows how much, hard and effectively he worked, promoted and supported new initiatives.

But at the same time, Evgeny Mikhailovich is a very modest person. He wrote the book "They were the first", but he did not tell about himself, but about the first eleven secretaries of the Komsomol Central Committee, who held this post before him. He knew some of them personally, told about others, studying numerous testimonies and documents.

He is a remarkable scientist, a very thoughtful historian. Another big book of his is due out soon.

Now we are preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Komsomol. He literally gushes with ideas. He has an excellent memory. He remembers everything to the smallest detail.

On January 7, he will turn 90 years old, but he will not widely celebrate the anniversary. Yevgeny Mikhailovich, a close person, has health problems. But on January 10, he will gather a bachelor party. Komsomol members, who are now over 70, 80 and 90 years old, will come to congratulate him. Komsomol brotherhood - it's forever.

And the fight continues again!

Abdulrahman Khalilovich Vezirov(worked as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Azerbaijan, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, Head of the Industry Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Consul General of the USSR in Calcutta (India), Ambassador to the Kingdom of Nepal, in Pakistan, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan):

I met Evgeny Mikhailovich in 1968, when I flew to Magnitogorsk, where the All-Union Meeting of Vocational Education Students was taking place. He was the secretary of the Chelyabinsk regional committee of the CPSU, and earlier - the youngest rector of the institute. During the meeting, we warmly communicated with him. And literally a couple of months later I found out that Yevgeny Mikhailovich was nominated for the post of first secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee. He worked in this position for almost ten years. In the achievements of the Soviet youth of that period - the great merit of Tyazhelnikov.

Evgeny Mikhailovich is a workaholic. When he had rare free hours, he went to the sports ground to play volleyball, and in winter - to ski.

When I was appointed Consul General of the USSR in Calcutta, he came to India literally a month later to support me. And he brought with him a large group of our artists and talented youth. It helped me a lot at the initial stage to establish ties with the local intelligentsia.

Then life scattered us around the world, but we were constantly in touch. And now we continue to communicate closely, we participate in many events. Moreover, he continues to call me, as the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, says: “A meeting of veterans of the West Siberian Metallurgical Plant is planned. Do you want to participate?" I say in response: "Yes, comrade commander."

I am happy that on my way I met such a wise, incredibly organized and benevolent person.

“I will not part with the Komsomol, I will be forever young!”

Ilyas Magomed-Salamovich Umakhanov(worked in the apparatus of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League. Since 2001 - Senator from Dagestan, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council):

It is deeply symbolic that the 90th anniversary of Yevgeny Mikhailovich practically coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Komsomol. There is a deep, inner connection in this. Among the leaders of the Komsomol who are now alive and well, given their age and degree of respect, Yevgeny Mikhailovich is the oldest. But in fact, this is the youngest Komsomol member I know. He is so cheerful, optimistic and young at heart. The Komsomol enthusiasm still burns in it.

Yevgeny Mikhailovich always treated me like a father, kindly. In this regard, I consider myself his student, and there are many of us.

He is from that breed of people who are beacons. You can talk for a long time about his human greatness, decency, dignity, kindness and generosity.

I love and revere Yevgeny Mikhailovich also because he was friendly with my father. They were comrades-in-arms, they went through life together. (Magomed-Salam Ilyasovich Umakhanov was the first secretary of the Dagestan Regional Committee of the CPSU, a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU - Auth.)

I want to wish Evgeny Mikhailovich to celebrate his 100th birthday, and to all of us that in modern Russian society there will be as many such people as possible - lights that you can look up to.

Vitaly Borisovich Arsentiev(he was chairman of the Central Revolutionary Commission of the Komsomol, vice-rector of the Higher School of Commissariat of the Komsomol at the Central Committee of the Komsomol, adviser to the Embassy of the USSR and the Russian Federation in Nicaragua):

I was lucky to work with Yevgeny Mikhailovich Tyazhelnikov in the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, and then in the Foreign Ministry. I'll tell you that such dedication and efficiency - still need to be looked for. For all of us, work in the Komsomol has become a real school of life, hardening for all subsequent years.

On the day of the 90th anniversary, I want to wish Evgeny Mikhailovich health, vigor, preservation of creativity and longevity!

He went from the secretary of the school organization in the village of Verkhnyaya Sanarka to the first secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee. He was a witness and an active participant in many significant events in the history of the Komsomol, the party, and the state. He visited all the republics, territories and most regions of the Soviet Union, in dozens of countries around the world. He headed the delegations of the Komsomol and Soviet youth at the IX and X World Festivals of Youth and Students in Sofia (1968) and Berlin (1973), was elected a delegate to the XVI and XVII congresses of the Komsomol, six congresses of the party, a deputy of four convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

For his work in the Komsomol, he was awarded the Order of the October Revolution, the Badge of Honor of the Komsomol, was entered in the Book of Honor of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, and was elected an honorary member of the Komsomol. His favorite saying: "The secret of eternal youth is that you had to join the Komsomol in time and never leave it!", Favorite song - "I will not part with the Komsomol, I will be forever young." Tyazhelnikov's Peru owns dozens of books, brochures, and articles on the Komsomol, its leaders, and the problems of the international youth movement.

He wrote about himself in an interview: “Komsomol for me is everything! I joined its ranks in the hottest time of the Great Patriotic War - in 1943, during the Battle of Stalingrad. He was elected secretary of the school Komsomol organization. We worked in the hospital, helped the seriously wounded to write letters ... I regret that these times are gone.”

In the first post-war year, he appeared before the students of the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical Institute in a red sweater, athletically slender, fit, sociable, open. You could turn to him at any time for help: he would not brush aside, he would explain, prompt. He felt a high internal culture, intelligence, good education. Everything turned out perfectly, as if effortlessly, easily and freely. However, one of the reasons for his success was a huge diligence and ability to work, a joyful, bright attitude to life and aspiration for knowledge. It is impossible for a person with such powerful positive energy to remain in the shadows.

“He attracted attention from the first minute of his appearance on the podium, captured the audience, captured the audience. I wanted to get up and follow the speaker - to the Komsomol subbotniks, shock construction projects, the development of virgin lands, ”recalls Nina Pavlovna Shmakova, professor, head of the Department of Patriotic History of the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical University.

Not a single mass event took place without his participation - clearing the railway track from snow blockages, sports competitions or amateur art activities. Then they lived from hand to mouth, studied just as hard and furiously as in the recent war days. At one of the meetings with fellow students, Evgeny Mikhailovich recalled how the teacher A.M. Mayorova met the participants of the ski competitions at the finish line and gave each, as a reward, a piece of bread ...

In 1950 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical Institute. He worked as an assistant at the department of Marxism-Leninism, secretary of the Komsomol committee, deputy head of the propaganda and agitation department of the Chelyabinsk regional committee of the Komsomol, was elected secretary of the party committee of the pedagogical institute.

His sense of duty, personal responsibility to the team bordered on selflessness. Yury Andreevich Tselishchev, the head of the department of defense and physical culture and mass work of the regional committee of the Komsomol in those years, told an episode that he remembered for the rest of his life:

“Spring of 1953, it's time for track and field relay races. Tyazhelnikov plays for a team of employees and teachers, runs penultimately, shows an excellent time ... But a teammate was late for the place where the baton was handed over. Eugene had to run "for that guy" and the next, most responsible, final stage. On the Revolution Square, the fans shout: “Zhenya, come on! Zhenya, add it! .. "But there is nothing to" add ": he gave all his strength at his stage of the relay race. And yet he did not leave the race, he finished. For the first time in my life, I was in the rearguard, and only close friends knew that it was a sporting feat, the Komsomol organizer took the fire on himself, ran two stages to help out the team. For the non-appearance of one of the participants, the entire team could be removed from the competition.

Without interruption from work, he entered graduate school. Then the development of virgin and fallow lands, gigantic in scope and complexity, unfolded. His supervisor L.G.Akhumova supported the desire of her graduate student to devote his dissertation to the labor feat of the Komsomol members and youth. On her recommendation, he worked not only in the archives of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, the Chelyabinsk Regional Party Committee, but also spent many weeks directly in the virgin state farms of the Southern Urals and Kazakhstan. Participated in the All-Union conferences of young virgin lands in the Kremlin. His first government award was the medal "For the Development of Virgin Lands". The defense of the dissertation for the degree of candidate of historical sciences took place at Moscow State University.

At 33, Evgeny Mikhailovich became the rector of his native institute, at 36 he became the secretary of the Chelyabinsk regional committee of the CPSU for ideology, at 40 he was elected first secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee. And at each stage leaves memorable evidence of their intentions and good deeds.

At the Pedagogical Institute, one of the first student groups in the country appeared under him; the Faculty of Public Professions was created, which is still operating today; a student club and a large sports hall are open; the building of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics began to be built. Future teachers began to practice at the Artek All-Union Pioneer Camp.

On his initiative, a song and dance ensemble was created at the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren, which was applauded by the audience in Odessa, Paris, Sofia, Warsaw, Bucharest; a scientific society of students was established. On the shore of one of the most beautiful lakes in the region, a sports and recreation camp "Chaika" appeared; the first in the Urals Ice Palace of Sports "Youth", the youth Palace of Culture "Change", the Institute of Physical Education (now the Ural State University of Physical Culture) was opened. With his direct participation, with the funds earned by young people at the All-Union Communist Subbotnik, two new buildings of the Palace of Pioneers were built on the Aloe Field: the theater and sports and technical, the keys to which were handed over to the children on September 1, 1972.

Evgeny Mikhailovich did not seem to leave his city - he is still aware of the events taking place in Chelyabinsk and the region. Living in recent years in Moscow, he tries to rally fellow countrymen into a friendly family, does not allow them to forget their small homeland. The Chelyabinsk Regional Public Charitable Foundation named after V.P. Polyanichko "Future of the Fatherland" became an important link with the people of the South Urals of Moscow. E.M.Tyazhelnikov, actively works in the Moscow Board of the Foundation, often visits our city and always meets with his South Ural colleagues.

The greeting address sent to the hero of the day by veterans of the Komsomol of the Southern Urals says:

Dear Evgeny Mikhailovich!

50 years ago you left our city for Moscow to head the Lenin Komsomol. Many events have happened over the years both in the life of the country and in the destinies of each of us. Much has been forgotten or revised, our moral foundations have been devalued, the country has become different. But we remember and will never forget the good that you have done for each of us, for the development of education, science, culture and sports in the South Urals.

Today, as in the days of your Komsomol youth, you are full of energy and optimism, social activity, and all your colossal experience is directed towards preserving historical memory and the continuity of generations, instilling in young people a sense of respect for the history and traditions of the Komsomol, responsibility for the future of the Fatherland.

We sincerely, from the bottom of our hearts, congratulate you on your anniversary! We wish you good health, active longevity, success in the implementation of everything that the International Organizing Committee, you personally, on a worthy meeting of the 100th anniversary of the Lenin Komsomol.
