On the Importance of Reading the Psalter for Children

Nun Sarah (Tambiyeva), spiritual daughter of Hieroschemamonk Stefan (Ignatenko), said:

Read the Psalter as your mother taught you. If you want well-being and piety for children, then you will not find a stronger and holier means of this on our earth under heaven. John Chrysostom, the great saint, said to the question about reading the Psalter: “It is better for the course of the sun to stop than to stop reading the Psalter.” Especially mothers about children. This reading is the greatest medicine for all diseases - both mental, and spiritual, and bodily.

Prayers of a father or mother for children

Holy Father, Eternal God, every gift or every good comes from You. I diligently pray to you for the children whom your grace has bestowed on me. You gave them life, revived them with an immortal soul, revived them with holy baptism, so that they, in accordance with Your will, inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, save them, according to Your goodness, until the end of their lives. Sanctify them in Thy truth, that Thy name may be sanctified in them. Help me by Your grace to educate them for the glory of Your name and for the benefit of others, give me the necessary means for this: patience and strength. Lord, enlighten them with the light of Thy Wisdom, may they love Thee with all their soul, with all their thoughts, instill in their hearts fear and aversion from all iniquity, may they walk in Thy commandments, adorn their souls with chastity, diligence, long-suffering, honesty, protect them with truth from slander vanity, abominations, sprinkle with the dew of Thy grace, may they succeed in virtues and holiness, and may they grow in Thy good pleasure, in love and piety. May the guardian angel always be with them and keep their youth from vain thoughts, from the seduction of the temptations of this world and from all kinds of crafty slander. If, however, when they sin against You, Lord, do not turn Your face away from them, but be merciful to them, arouse repentance in their hearts according to the multitude of Your bounties, cleanse their sins and do not deprive them of Your blessings, but give them everything that is necessary for their salvation, preserving them from every illness, danger, trouble and sorrow, overshadowing them with Your mercy all the days of this life. God, I pray to You, give me joy and joy about my children and make me stand with them at Your Last Judgment, with shameless boldness to say: “Here I am and the children whom You gave me, Lord. Amen". Let us glorify Your All-Holy Name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God and Father, Creator and Preserver of all creatures! Give thanks to my poor children (names) By Your Holy Spirit, may He kindle in them the true fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom and direct prudence, according to which whoever acts, that praise abides forever. Bless them with true knowledge of Thee, keep them from all idolatry and false doctrine, make them grow in the true and saving faith and in all piety, and may they remain in them constantly to the end. Grant them a believing, obedient and humble heart and mind, may they grow in years and in grace before God and before people. Plant in their hearts love for Your Divine Word, so that they are reverent in prayer and worship, respectful to the servants of the Word and sincere in their actions with everything, bashful in body movements, chaste in morals, true in words, faithful in deeds, diligent in studies. happy in the performance of their duties, reasonable and righteous towards all people. Keep them from all the temptations of the evil world, and may not evil society corrupt them. Do not let them fall into impurity and unchastity, may they not shorten their lives for themselves and may they not offend others. Protect them in every danger, so that they do not suffer sudden death. Make sure that we do not see dishonor and disgrace in them, but honor and joy, so that Your Kingdom is multiplied by them and the number of believers increases, and may they be in heaven around Your meal, like heavenly olive branches, and with all the chosen ones they will reward You honor, praise and glorification through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, be Thy mercy on my children (names), keep them under Your shelter, cover from every crafty lust, drive away from them every enemy and adversary, open their ears and eyes of the heart, grant tenderness and humility to their hearts. Lord, we are all Your creation, have pity on my children (names) and turn them to repentance. Save, Lord, and have mercy on my children (names) and enlighten their minds with the light of the mind of Thy Gospel and guide them on the path of Thy commandments and teach them, Savior, to do Thy will, for Thou art our God.

Those who have Christian names are commemorated of health, and only those baptized in the Orthodox Church are commemorated of repose.

Indestructible Psalter

The indestructible Psalter is read not only about health, but also about repose. From ancient times, the ordering of a commemoration on the Unsleeping Psalter is considered a great almsgiving for the departed soul.

It is also good to order the Indestructible Psalter for yourself, support will be vividly felt. And one more important point, but far from the least important,

There is an eternal commemoration on the Indestructible Psalter. It seems expensive, but the result is more than a million times more than the money spent. If this is still not possible, then you can order for a shorter period. It's also good to read for yourself.

Lord, save them by the power of Your Honorable and Life-Giving Cross, under Your holy shelter, from a flying bullet, arrow, sword, fire, from a deadly wound, water drowning and vain death. PRAYERS IN TEACHING CHILDREN

Lord our God and our Creator, in His image we, the people, who adorned, Thy chosen ones, taught Thy law, so that those who listen to him marvel, revealed the secrets of wisdom to children, gave Solomon and all who seek it - open the hearts, minds and mouths of Thy servants (names) in order to comprehend the power of Thy law and to successfully learn the useful doctrine taught by it, for the glory of Thy Most Holy Name, for the benefit and dispensation of Thy Holy Church and the understanding of Thy good and perfect will. Deliver them from all the wiles of the enemy, keep them in the faith of Christ and purity throughout their lives, may they be strong in mind and in the fulfillment of Your commandments, and so taught they will glorify Your Most Holy Name and be heirs of Your Kingdom, for You are God, strong in mercy and good strength, and all glory, honor and worship befits you, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, always, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

(To the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian)

Oh, the great apostle, the loud-voiced evangelist, the most elegant theologian, the occult expert of incomprehensible revelations, the virgin and beloved confidante of Christ John, receive us sinners (names) who come running under your strong intercession and patronage with your usual mercy! Ask the All-Generous Lover of Christ and our God, even before your eyes you poured out Your most precious blood for us, His indecent servants, may He not remember our iniquities, but may He have mercy on us, and may He do with us by His mercy; may he grant us health of soul and body, all prosperity and abundance, teaching us to turn all of it into the glory of Him, the Creator, Savior and our God. At the end of our temporary life, may we, holy apostle, escape the merciless tortures awaiting us in the air ordeals, but may we reach, under your guidance and patronage, the Mountainous Jerusalem, whose glory in revelation you have seen, and now you enjoy these joys promised to the elect God's. Oh, great John, save all the cities and countries of Christianity, all this, this temple, dedicated to your holy name, serving and praying in it, from famine, destruction, cowardly and flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners and internecine warfare, deliver from all troubles and misfortunes, and with your prayers, turn away the righteous wrath of God from us, and ask us for His mercy; Oh, great and incomprehensible God, Alfo and Omego, source and object of our faith! Behold, we offer you Saint John, whom you have made worthy to know you, the inscrutable God, in an inexpressible revelation. Accept his intercession for us, grant us the fulfillment of our petitions, to Your glory: and above all, complete us with spiritual perfection, to the enjoyment of an endless life in Your heavenly abodes. Oh, Heavenly Father, who created the whole Lord, the Soul of Spirits, the Almighty King! Touch our hearts with Your finger, and they, melted like wax, will be shed before You, and the mortal spiritual creature will be created, in honor and glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Saint John Chrysostom

Oh, great hierarch John Chrysostom! You have received many and various gifts from the Lord, and like a good and faithful servant, you have multiplied all the talents given to you for good: for this reason, you were truly a universal teacher, as every age and every rank is learned from you. Behold, the image appeared to you as a youth of obedience, to a young one - chastity shone, a husband - diligence a mentor, an old one - a teacher of kindness, a monk - a rule of abstinence, a prayer - a leader from God inspired, wisdom seeking - an enlightener, a well-spoken ornate - the words of a living source are inexhaustible, beneficent - a star of mercy, to those in charge - the rule of a wise image, truth to a zealot - boldness inspirer, truth for the sake of the persecuted - patience a mentor: all were thou, but save every one. Over all of these, you acquired love, even if there is a union of perfection, and by that, as if by the power of God, all the gifts in your soul were united into one, and there the love divided reconciling, in the interpretation of the words of the apostles, preached to all the faithful. But we are sinners, according to each one our own gift of property, unity of the spirit in the union of the world are not imams, but we are conceited, irritating each other, envious of each other: for this reason, our divided one is not divided into peace and salvation, but into enmity and condemnation to us. The same to you, the saint of God, we fall down, the servants of God (names), we are overwhelmed with contention, and in contrition of heart we ask: with your prayers, take away from our hearts all pride and envy that divides us, but in many places we will unrestrictedly remain one church body, but let us love one another with your prayerful words and with one mind confess the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity of the same essence and inseparable, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Cover them with the robe of Your Motherhood, keep them in the fear of God and obedience to your parents, implore my Lord and Your Son, may He grant them useful things for their salvation. I entrust them to Your Motherly care, as You are the Divine protection of Your servants.

We thank Thee, the Creator, as if Thou hast vouchsafed us Thy grace, in a hedgehog heed to teaching. Bless our bosses, parents and teachers who lead us to the knowledge of the good, give us strength and strength to continue this teaching.

Prayer for Children Who Have Difficulty Teaching

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, truly dwelling in the hearts of the twelve apostles and by the power of the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, descending in the form of tongues of fire, opened their mouths so that they began to speak in other dialects - Himself, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, send it down Your Holy Spirit on this lad (this maiden) (name), and plant in his (her) heart the Holy Scripture, which Your most pure hand inscribed on the tablets of the legislator Moses, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Ask us all that is good for this temporary life, and even more necessary for our eternal salvation: help us with your intercession, servant of God, may the holy Orthodox Church of Christ abide in peace, and the Fatherland is founded in prosperity, indestructible in all piety: be us all, miracle-working saint, in every sorrow and circumstance a quick helper: most of all, at the hour of our death, a merciful intercessor appears to us, let us not betray the evil world-keeper at the ordeals of the air power, but let us be honored with an unshakable ascent into the Kingdom of Heaven. Hey, Father, our prayer book is dear! Do not disgrace our hopes, but always about us, the servants of God (names), intercede before the throne of the Life-Giving Trinity, let us be honored together with you and with all the saints, if not worthy of Esma, in the villages of paradise glorify the greatness, grace and mercy of the one God in the Trinity , the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

The holy feast is the fortieth day of the Ascension of the Lord. We celebrate Easter on the eve and we will celebrate the great annual holiday on the fortieth day after Easter - the Ascension of the Lord. Sorokoousty - forty days of fasting, forty days of Easter, everything goes by forty, weeks and forty. And the history of mankind also goes by weeks and forties. About the audiobook: This children's CD contains the beginnings of the Psalms, a book that is part of the Holy Bible. In this amazing book, the child will find wise spiritual advice and guidance for many occasions and will find wonderful examples of repentance. The psalms filled with spiritual power will keep him under the roof of the Almighty, when, in an hour of danger, he turns to the guardian angel guarding him with the prayers of the psalms. This book will give food to the mind: it will tell the child in a concise poetic form about the creation of the world, about the history of peoples and tribes.

The entire Psalter consists of 150 psalms grouped into 20 chapters (kathisma). This disc contains seven psalms most frequently used in Orthodox worship. Each psalm is preceded by a commentary explaining the meaning and significance of this psalm. Then the text of the psalm itself follows, first in Church Slavonic, and then in Russian, translated by P. Yungerov (Psalter in Russian translation from the Greek text LXX, with an introduction and notes. Kazan, 1915). Such a presentation of the material will make it easier for the child to understand and meaningfully perceive these divinely inspired texts by ear, and even, if desired, will help to memorize them. The disc can also be recommended for family listening.

All about religion and faith - "prayer for children when reading the psalter" with a detailed description and photographs.

“It has not entered the heart of man that God has prepared for those who love Him,” writes the Apostle Paul to the Christians of the city of Corinth. This means that a person will not have enough imagination to imagine what another world looks like, where he will appear before God face to face. But when a relative or friend dies, one wants to know what happens to him beyond the bounds of being. When and how to pray to God to ease your grief for the departed and the path of his soul to eternity? Church and home prayers for the newly deceased, when carefully read, give the Christian consolation and instruction.

The newly reposed (that is, those who have just appeared before God) are called deceased from the moment of death to a year. Over many centuries, several customs have been established in the Orthodox Church to commemorate the newly deceased:

  • daily reading of the Psalter with a special prayer;
  • magpie, performed in the temple;
  • memorial services on the 3rd, 9th and 40th day;
  • lithium on the grave on the days of the general commemoration of the dead;
  • donations, memorial meals.

Pious Christians try to do the above even after a year. In this way, the fate of the deceased is alleviated and the commandment of the Lord about love for neighbors is fulfilled.

Reading the Psalter for the newly deceased

When the body of the deceased is still in the house and the priest is expected to arrive for the funeral, the relatives take turns, including at night, read the Psalter over the deceased. In the absence of proper skill, they invite a church reader or a pious layman who has experience in this.

For reading, they set up a lectern (book stand) or a small table, placing it in the heads of the deceased, light a candle. It is not forbidden, along with a candle, to use a table lamp. With prolonged reading and extreme fatigue, the reader can continue the prayer while sitting, getting up only for bows at the words “Glory: and now: Hallelujah” and the prayer performed after each kathisma.

Friends and relatives can quietly enter and exit during the performance of the Psalter, praying for the deceased relative according to their strength. The guest reader, if possible, can read all night or limit yourself to reading the Book of Psalms once. For the work he has done, he is offered a monetary donation, part of the memorial meal, and they ask for prayers for the deceased.

The sound of psalms at the tomb of the newly deceased calms the grief of loved ones and inspires hope in the mercy of God, with whom the soul of the deceased will meet very soon.

On the day of burial, believing relatives and friends of the deceased agree among themselves to continue reading the Psalter until the fortieth day. Everyone undertakes to read one kathisma every day.

Prayer for the Newly Departed

The Psalter consists of 20 kathismas, each of which is divided into three parts. After each part, three bows are made and a short prayer is read:

“God rest, Lord, the soul of Your servant (name), forgive him sins voluntary and involuntary, and grant him the Kingdom of Heaven”.

At the end of the kathisma, they read a prayer for the deceased up to 40 days, located at the end of the Psalter, in the chapter "On reading the Psalter for the deceased." If there is no such chapter in the book, a separately printed text is used.

For conscious reading, one must understand the meaning of some words and expressions that make up the text.

  • "in the hope of eternal life"- hoping for eternal life;
  • "forgive sins and consume unrighteousness"- these words refer to the Lord, Who forgives sins and destroys the wrong deeds created by man;
  • "voluntary and involuntary sin"- sins committed intentionally and unintentionally;
  • "communion of the eternal good"- receive a part of eternal blessings;
  • "Amen"- everything said is true.

Magpie order in the temple

Prayer on the 3rd, 9th and 40th day

Commemoration on special days after death existed even in paganism. Wishing to sanctify folk customs, the Church decided to pray for the soul of the deceased within the time limits established by antiquity. It is impossible for the human mind to know what is happening in a world where there is no time. To make it easier to imagine the afterlife of the deceased, The church divides it into periods:

3rd day, burial

On the third day after death, a burial (funeral service) is performed.- an Orthodox ceremony with the participation of a priest and the obligatory prayer of loved ones. Burial takes place over the coffin of the deceased. In the event of a tragic death, when the body cannot be found, an absentee funeral is performed in the temple.

The rite of burial is very long and in ancient times lasted about two hours. Today it is shortened to 20 minutes. This will not affect the fate of the deceased if relatives fervently pray for his soul.

After the ceremony, a memorial meal is arranged, to which in the old days the poor and the poor were invited, asking their prayers for the deceased.

9th day, beginning of ordeals or "twenty judgments"

On this important day, loved ones gather in the temple, to serve a memorial service. The soul of the deceased, having enjoyed the contemplation of heavenly abodes, is preparing to answer for all the untruths committed. Demons approach her, reminiscent of even the smallest offenses related to twenty types of sins. Angels answer them, pointing to the good deeds of the deceased or the church repentance brought by him. It is hard for the soul, for which the Angels cannot answer. Then the prayers of loved ones, performed on the 9th day and all subsequent time, until the 40th day, are placed on the scales.

40th day, determining the location of the soul

On the 40th day, the memorial meal is again assembled, a memorial service is ordered in the temple. You can extend the completed magpie or order the reading of the "Indestructible Psalter" in the monastery. Relatives of the deceased pray that God would have mercy on the soul and determine it to await the Last Judgment in heavenly bliss.

It is better to call as many people as possible to prayer, doing alms on behalf of the deceased. Usually they distribute food, money or clothes to the poor, saying: "Remember the repose of the servant of God (name)." The one who takes alms is baptized and answers with a prayer: “Remember, Lord, Thy servant in Thy Kingdom.”

After 40 days, the reading of the Psalter for the deceased stops, but his name is constantly commemorated when reading kathismas at home or listening to them in the temple. Enough on the "Glory" mentally say "Remember, Lord, Thy servant."

In some cases, by agreement with the priest, a funeral liturgy can be performed in the church.

Saturdays

Before a year has passed from the day of death, the deceased is called the newly deceased. There is also a custom to do this only until the 40th day. Both traditions are acceptable.

Litia for the dead are celebrated every Saturday in the church., for which you should apply a note and a candle. On the days of church-wide commemoration - Parental Saturdays - they bring food for the servants of the temple so that they join in prayer. It is good to put a note with the name of the deceased in the package with the offering, be sure to mark "for the dead."

Upon completion of the year from the date of death, a capital monument (cross) is erected over the grave and a memorial service is served. After that, the deceased is called "ever-remembered" (who is remembered forever).

Home prayer for the newly deceased

Almost all the texts that sounded in the temple at the funeral service and memorial services can be used in home prayer for the deceased. You can find them in the prayer book or breviary.. Usually, the commemoration of the newly deceased is performed according to the morning rule, where a separate text is devoted to this.

Prayer for the newly deceased soothes the bitterness of separation, allows you to spiritually connect with him, help his situation. For a longer prayer, there is the "Canon for the One Who Died", where, for convenience, the commemoration is carried out in the singular. An akathist with the same name can be added to the canon. These texts are found in liturgical books, so for reading at home it is more convenient to buy a separate edition in the temple or print it from the Internet. There is a tradition to read the canon and akathist on the fortieth day.

Visiting the grave, the layman himself can sing the troparia “With the spirits of the righteous who have died”, “Repose to the saints”, “Eternal memory”.

How to read the psalter at home

The Psalter is a book of sacred hymns or psalms, most of which were written by King David at the instigation of the Holy Spirit. In each psalm we see the pain, joy, confusion or triumph that the Great Psalmist experienced when he created these sacred texts.

Psalms have been used in worship since Old Testament times. And in our time at the services we hear choral singing or the reading of psalms. The reading of the Psalter in the temple is regulated by the Typicon, the liturgical charter.

In the Orthodox Church, there is a good tradition of reading the Psalter in private (at home). The Holy Book is read either by agreement - several believers, reading the entire Psalter in a day, or individually, according to a kathisma (section of the Psalter) per day. Having taken upon himself the rule of diligently and carefully reading the Psalter at home, a Christian accomplishes a small feat, this is both difficult and at the same time brings great peace to the soul.

There is no rule for reading the Psalter at home. But over time, certain rules have developed, the implementation of which is desirable.

  • Without the blessing taken from the priest, it is impossible to start reading the psalter.
  • Before reading begins, a candle or lamp is lit. The fire when reading is not ignited only if you are currently on the road.
  • Following the advice of Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, one should read the Psalter aloud, quietly. This facilitates the perception of the sacred text not only by the mind, but also by hearing. “Give joy and gladness to my ears” (Ps. 50:10).
  • It is impossible to place stresses in words incorrectly. It is a sin. From the wrong placement of stresses, the meaning of the word changes, the phrase is distorted.
  • If it is difficult to stand, then it is allowed to read the Holy Book while sitting. It is necessary to get up when the "Glory" and the prayers are read, with which the reading of the Psalter or kathisma begins and ends.
  • When following the rule, one should not indulge in excessive passion. Let the reading be a little monotonous, devoid of theatricality.
  • No need to read the titles of the psalms.
  • Do not be discouraged by the fact that at first it is not clear what the psalms are talking about. The beauty of ancient texts is gradually revealed, and their meaning becomes clear.
  • First read " Prayers before reading the Psalter ".
  • The Psalter is divided into twenty kathismas, which are divided into parts by three Glories. At Glories, when reading the Psalter at home, the living and the dead are commemorated.
  • After reading the kathisma, it is obligatory to read the troparia and prayers.
  • The Psalter ends with the reading of "Prayers for reading several kathismas or the entire Psalter."
  • Do not be afraid to make a mistake in something or read something incorrectly, not according to the charter. Sincere repentance, gratitude for everything will make prayer alive, regardless of any mistakes.

Reading Order of the Psalms

The liturgical charter for reading the Psalter is specified in Chapter 17 of the Typicon. In general, Orthodox worship basically consists of the Psalter. Psalms are the core, the foundation of the service. From the daily liturgical circle there is not a single divine service in which the psalms are not used, in almost all the followings of the Trebnik texts from the Psalter are used.

Along with the reading of kathismata at Vespers, Matins and the Great Lenten Hours, psalms are used separately in worship (for example, the Hours are based on three psalms) and verses from them (prokeimnas, chants to stichera).

For a week in the temples, the Psalter is necessarily read 1 time in full, during the period of Great Lent, twice a week.

For the laity, the Psalter has become an indispensable book in home prayer. There are no special instructions here on how one should read the Psalter at home, but the general rules are similar to the liturgical ones. The Psalter is read with prayers for health, for the repose of the dead, especially during periods of fasting.

The Rule of Reading the Psalter at an Orthodox Divine Liturgy

The period when two kathismas are read at Matins

Period:

  • From December 20 to January 14 according to the church calendar

On weekdays, if a polyeleos matins or vigil is served, then at Vespers on the eve of the feast, the ordinary kathisma is omitted, and instead of it, the 1st antiphon of the 1st kathisma (“Blessed is the husband”) is sung.

The period when three kathismas are read at Matins

The Psalter is not read during the period from Holy Thursday of Holy Week to St. Thomas Week (Anti-Easter). During these ten days, any reading of the Psalter is canceled both in churches and in private. In all other cases, the Psalter is read by the laity.

In cell reading, it is customary to divide kathismas into three Glories. Before and after the kathisma, special prayers are read.

Before reading a kathisma or several kathismas:

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us.

Amen. King of Heaven. Trisagion. And according to our Father...

Lord have mercy (12 times)

Come, let us worship the King our God. (bow)

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, the King of our God. (bow)

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (bow)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to Thee, God. (thrice)

Lord have mercy (thrice)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

and now and forever and forever and ever. Amen

After reading the kathisma, the Trisagion, the troparia and the prayer according to the kathisma

It is worthy to eat as if truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Blessed and Immaculate and Mother of our God.

The most honest Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

Glory, and now. Lord, have mercy (thrice).

The go to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the prayers of the prayer of your mere mere mere, the blessing of honest and the life -giving cross and the holy forces of the delicious ones, and the faithful father of the same, and the holy of the prophet, and the saint and the saint and the saint Humanitarian. Amen.

Prayers for health and repose in Glory

Save, Lord, and have mercy on my spiritual father (name), my parents (names), relatives (names), bosses, mentors, benefactors (names) and all Orthodox Christians.

Give rest, Lord, to the souls of your departed servants: my parents, relatives, benefactors (names) and all Orthodox Christians, and forgive them all sins, voluntary and involuntary, and grant them the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reading the Psalter for the Dead

The custom of reading the Psalter for the dead goes back to ancient times, reading this undoubtedly brings them great comfort in itself, as reading the word of God, and as testifying to the love for them and the memory of them living brethren. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitiatory sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those who are commemorated - just as any prayer, any good deed is accepted by Him.

Psalms should be read with tenderness and contrition of the heart, without haste, delving into what is being read with attention. Reading the Psalter by the commemorators themselves brings the greatest benefit: it testifies to the great degree of love and zeal for the commemorated of their living brethren, who themselves personally want to work in their memory, and not replace themselves in labor with others.

The feat of reading will be accepted by the Lord not only as a sacrifice for those who are commemorated, but as a sacrifice for those who bring it themselves, those who labor in reading.

Of course, one who is capable of this and has certain knowledge appropriate for serving a sacred cause can take over the reading of the Psalter at the tomb of the deceased. The sacrificial impulse of commemorating relatives or friends of the deceased can in many ways, but not in everything, make up for their poor preparedness. In addition, the reading of the Psalter at the tomb should be as continuous as possible, and this requires several successive readers. Therefore, there is a custom to invite for sacred reading people capable of it, adding to this invitation the giving of alms for those who are commemorated. However, in any case, the duty of attention to the word of God and prayer for the soul of the deceased lies not with one reader of the Psalter, but also with the relatives of the deceased.

The very reading of the Psalter for the dead is of two kinds. The first is a purely reading of the Psalter over the coffin of the deceased in the coming days and weeks after his death - for example, until the 40th day. Reading the God-inspired psalms of David should ideally be a daily private activity for Orthodox Christians, so it is common to combine cell (home) reading of the Psalter with commemoration of the living and the dead - this is another kind of reading of the Psalter with commemoration.

If the Psalter is read only for the deceased, before the first kathisma, the Canon must be read for the one who died. After the canon - “It is worthy to eat ..” and further to the end, as indicated in the rank of the cell reading of the Canon for the one who died.

When the psalter is read at the tomb of the deceased, the Priest present first performs the Follow-up on the exodus of the soul and body. After that, the reader begins reading the Psalter

At the end of the entire Psalter, the reader again reads the Canon for the one who died, and after it the reading of the Psalter begins again, and this is repeated throughout the reading of the Psalter for the deceased.

“When reading the Psalter at the tomb of the deceased,” writes Vladyka Athanasius (Sakhorov) in his exhaustive study “On the Commemoration of the Dead According to the Rule of the Orthodox Church,” “there is no need to read the troparia and prayers assigned to the usual cell rule according to kathismas. It will be more appropriate in all cases, and after each "Glory:", and after the kathisma, to read a special memorial prayer. The practice of Ancient Russia consecrated the use in this case of that funeral troparion, with which the cell reading of the funeral canons should end: “Remember, Lord, the soul of your departed servant”, and during the reading five bows are supposed, in the troparion itself it is read three times. According to the same ancient practice, the reading of the Psalter for the dead is preceded by the reading of the Canon for the deceased, after which the reading of the Psalter begins. After reading all the psalms, the funeral Canon is read again, after which the reading of the first kathisma begins again. This order continues throughout the reading of the Psalter for the dead.”

Now a somewhat different tradition of reading the Psalter at the tomb has become widespread: according to the first and second “Glory:” kathisma, the prayer is read “Remember, Lord our God. “, and at the end of the kathisma, the troparia are recited (and not the troparia at the end of this kathisma) and the prayer put after the kathisma. This reading order is recommended in the Psalter of the edition of the Moscow Patriarchate (1973) and some other editions.

When reading the Psalter at the grave of the deceased, one should take into account the tradition and each time precede the reading of the 1st kathisma with the reading of the funeral canon.

In conclusion, it remains only to add that it is more fitting for any reader of the Psalter (experienced or inexperienced) to stand like a person praying (at the feet of the coffin of the deceased), if a special extreme does not force him to sit down. Negligence in this matter, as in the observance of other pious customs, is offensive both to the sacred rite, blessed by the Holy Church, and to the word of God, which, in case of carelessness, is read as if inconsistent with the intention and feeling of the praying Christian.

Follow-up when reading the Psalter for the dead

The reading of each kathisma begins with a prayer:

Come, let us worship our King God.

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, our King God.

Come, let us worship and bow down to Christ Himself, the King and our God.

(When reading a kathisma for each “Glory” (which reads as “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and forever and forever and ever Amen”), it is pronounced:

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, glory to Thee, O God! (thrice.),

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

(Then a prayer petition is read for the deceased “Remember, Lord our God.”, located at the end of the “Following the Exodus of the Soul”, and the name of the deceased is commemorated on it with the addition (until the fortieth day from the date of death) of the word “newly reposed):

Remember, Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the belly of your eternally reposed servant, our brother [name] and as Good and Lover of mankind, forgive sins, and consume iniquities, weaken, leave and forgive all his voluntary sins and involuntary, deliver him eternal torment and the fire of Gehenna, and grant him the communion and enjoyment of Your eternal good, prepared for those who love You: if you sin, but do not depart from You, and unquestionably in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Your God in the Trinity glorified, faith, and Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, Orthodox even until his last breath of confession. Be merciful to him the same, and faith, even in Thee instead of deeds, and with Your saints, as if Generous rest: there is no man who lives and does not sin. But Thou art One, apart from all sin, and Thy truth, truth forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and generosity, and love of mankind, and to Thee we send glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Then the reading of the kathisma psalms continues). At the end of the kathisma it reads:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow from the waist.)

Prayer to the Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Lord, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord have mercy. (thrice);

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

From the spirits of the righteous who have died, the soul of Your servant, Savior, give rest, keeping me in a blessed life, even with You, Humane

In Thy rest, Lord: where all Thy saints rest, rest also the soul of Thy servant, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit:

You are the God who descended into hell and loosed the bonds of the fettered, Thyself and the soul of Thy servant rest

And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

One Pure and Immaculate Virgin, who gave birth to God without a seed, pray that his soul be saved.

Lord have mercy (40 times)

(Then the prayer laid down at the end of the kathisma is read.)

Psalms for children

Foreword

God-loving young reader!
We offer you the beginning of the Psalter, the book that is part of the Holy Bible. In your family or in the temple, you have noticed, of course, how often adults read this book. Some Orthodox know the entire Psalter by heart. And it is clear why: in the Psalter, the believing soul finds everything it needs. She responds with delight to that marvelous inspired doxology, praise and thanksgiving to God, which are poured out in abundance in the psalms. And what beautiful examples of repentance we find in these hymns!
Reading this amazing book, you will find in it wise spiritual advice and edification for many occasions. And when you want to turn to the Lord with a request, the Psalter will help you do it. Psalms filled with spiritual power will keep you under the shelter of the Almighty when, in an hour of danger, you call on the Guardian Angel guarding you with the prayers of the Psalms. This book will give food to the mind: it will tell you in a concise poetic form about the creation of the world, about the history of peoples and tribes.
The entire Psalter consists of 150 psalms grouped into 20 chapters (kathisma). In Greek, "psalm" means "song". Psalms were written in Hebrew by divinely inspired psalmists who lived in the Old Testament era in Israel. The rhythmic, poetic texts of the psalms were accompanied by the playing of stringed musical instruments. One of these instruments was called the psalter. Psalmody was an important part of Old Testament worship.
About half of the psalms belong to David. David was both a king and a warrior, and a prophet, and a psalmist. He lived a thousand years before the birth of Christ. Everyone knows his feat: while still a simple shepherd, he entered into single combat with the Philistine hero Goliath and defeated him. But David's strength was not in the sling and stone, but in the name of the Lord God of hosts, with which David was armed.
Of the lineage of David, our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, about whom David prophesied in his psalms, was to be born. As you study the Psalter, you will see that it foretells the main events in the life of Christ. In particular, His crucifixion, resurrection, ascension to heaven, His second coming. The Psalter will give you a deeper understanding of the gospel. You will see how God responds to the sin and weakness of man in the Old Testament with the love of the Cross and the Resurrection in the New Testament.
When the Bible was translated into Slavonic in the 9th century after the Nativity of Christ, the Psalter was one of the first books translated. The names of the translators, the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius with their disciples, will forever remain in the grateful memory of the Slavs. Saint Cyril invented the Slavic alphabet (Cyrillic). There are letters in it, the outline of which is unusual for you, while some letters are not at all in modern Russian.

In order for you to be able to read Church Slavonic, we enclose the Slavonic alphabet. Of course, it will be necessary to make an effort to learn how to read and understand the Psalter correctly. After all, over a thousand years the language has changed: some words have fallen into disuse, others have changed their meaning.
When you read the Psalter in Church Slavonic, remember that there is no “ё” sound in this language. Therefore, do not say “mine”, “your”, “own”, but: “mine”, “your”, “own”. Also, pronounce the "o" sound clearly, don't turn it into an "a" sound. Read: "Let's bow," and not "bow," "have mercy," and not "pause," and so on.
Call on the Lord for help, and soon you will feel the music of the Slavic language, you will understand how rich and expressive, powerful and plastic it is. It is a great gift of God to speak of the heavenly and the divine in this wondrous language! Only this language is left to the Church, in order to speak about high things in a high style. And even if not everything will be immediately clear to you - do not be embarrassed. As you grow in spirit, the depths of Scripture will be revealed to you.
Remember the advice of St. John Chrysostom: When you sit down to read, first pray to God that He open your eyes of the heart. When you read, do not only turn over the sheets, but listen with all your heart to what is written. Pray like this: “Lord Jesus Christ! Open my eyes of the heart so that I may hear Your word and understand it and do Your will.”.
Try to memorize the psalms. They will come in handy for you many times. Knowing them by heart will make your inner life independent of circumstances - you will be able to find the path to God in your heart whenever you want. This, moreover, will certainly develop your ability to memorize, and your speech will become richer, and your style will become more sublime.
Like any work, reading the psalms will strengthen your will. The invisible grace of God will teach you to distinguish between good and evil, teach you to read the Psalter with good deeds, to see the presence of God in your life.
We place only seven psalms in this little book. They are most often used in our Orthodox worship. We hope that every time you meet with them for worship, it will be joyful for you, and the service itself in the church will become clearer and closer.
On the altar of a pure childish heart, you will lift up a fervent prayer for your relatives, friends, for the whole world. The flame of this prayer will keep you from all evil, because the little heart fragrant with prayer is especially dear to the Lord.
God help you, dear young friend and prayer partner!

PSALM 1

The first psalm, according to the holy fathers, is the basis and beginning of all psalms, because it speaks of bliss (spiritual harmony with Truth), which is communicated to the righteous. Whom the Lord Jesus Christ calls blessed in the Holy Scriptures, you can read in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, verses 3 to 11 (“the beatitudes”).
David at the very beginning indicates that there are two ways: the blessedness of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked. If you want to walk in the path of the righteous, carefully choose your friends and advisers, so as not to deviate from the Law of the Lord. Blessed is he who meditates on the Law, loves it and does everything according to its rules, i.e. the Law is taught day and night. The wicked will not stand at the Last Judgment, the sinners will not abide in the assembly of the righteous. What a great moral lesson the prophet wisely teaches us!
This is one of the psalms that you hear in church at the beginning of the All-Night Vigil.

Psalm 1. Psalm of David

1 Blessed is the man who has nothing to
did not walk among the stewards, and on the path of sinners
2 did not stand, and did not sit in the company of destroyers,
But in the law of the Lord is his will and
3 well of Him he will learn day and night. And
he will be like a tree planted at the
kah waters, which will bear its fruit in
its time, and its leaf will not fall off. And all
4 whatever he does will prosper. Not
so the wicked, not so: but like dust, which
5 ryy sweeps the wind from the face of the earth! Therefore not
the wicked will rise up for judgment, and sinners in
6 assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows
the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

PSALM 33

This is the song of thanksgiving that David offered up to the Lord after avoiding danger.
The psalm is called alphabetical: the first verse begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph), the second verse begins with the second letter (Beth), and so on - according to the number of letters in the alphabet - a total of 23 verses. In the Hebrew text, the psalm is especially beautiful. Without a doubt, David had a high poetic skill.
The psalmist calls to thank the Lord for everything that happens in our lives, and in spiritual poverty with hope to cry out to Him. The Lord will not shame our hope.
If you memorize this psalm, you will be able to sing along to the choir when this hymn is sung at the end of Vespers.

Psalm 33. Psalm of David, when he changed his face before Abimelech, and he let him go, and he left.

I will praise the Lord at all times, His praise is always on my lips.
In the Lord my soul shall glory, that the meek shall hear and rejoice.
Magnify the Lord with me, and let us all exalt His name together.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my sorrows.
Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be put to shame.
This poor man called out, and the Lord heard him, and delivered him from all his troubles.
The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is: blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Fear the Lord, all His saints, for there is no shortage of those who fear Him.
The rich have become poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good.
Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who loves life, wants to see good days?
Keep your tongue from evil and your mouth from evil words.
Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and strive for it.
The eyes of the Lord are towards the righteous, and His ears towards their prayer.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, in order to destroy the memory of them from the earth.
The righteous called, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the humble in spirit.
The righteous have many sorrows, but the Lord will deliver them from all of them.
The Lord keeps all their bones, not one of the 21 will be broken.
The death of sinners is disastrous, and those who hate the righteous will sin.
The Lord will redeem the souls of His servants, and all who trust in Him will not sin.

PSALM 50

Even the righteous can stumble and fall. That is exactly what happened to David. But look at what depth of repentance he brought to God, what is the power of his tears!
This is the most common psalm in the church and on the prayer rule. He is a model of repentance and perfectly expresses the entire Psalter.
Old Testament humanity did not have the sacrament of Repentance, which we have in the New Testament. Do you remember that at the end of your confession in church, the priest reads a prayer over your head? Through this prayer we receive the forgiveness of our sins. And in the Old Testament, the sprinkling of the penitent with water or the blood of a sacrificial animal served as a symbol of cleansing from sins. This was done with a bunch of hyssop (bitter aromatic herb). The penitent had to sacrifice an animal. If the animal, after being killed, was burned completely, then it was called a burnt offering. This is the kind of sacrifice David is talking about.
The repentance that the prophet brings in this psalm is very sincere and deep. It is amazing that David, a man of the Old Testament, utters piercing words of repentance in the spirit of the New Testament: God does not need burnt offerings, but a contrite and humble heart, which the Lord will not despise. A thousand years after David, Christ Himself will say that “he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12).
Try to understand the meaning of the psalm. Learn it by heart. You will grow up, and all new depths will be revealed to you in this psalm.

Psalm 50. To the end. Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came in to him,
After he went in to Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity.
Wash me many times from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
You alone have I sinned and done evil before You, so that You will be righteous in Your judgments and overcome when You judge.
For behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins my mother bore me.
But you loved the truth: the unknown and secret of your wisdom you showed me.
You will sprinkle me with hyssop and I will be cleansed; you will wash me and I will become whiter than snow.
You will bring joy and gladness to my ears: the bones of the humble will rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and confirm me with the Sovereign Spirit.
I will teach the transgressors Your ways, and the wicked will turn to You.
Deliver me from the (shedding) of blood, O God, God of my salvation! my tongue will praise thy righteousness with joy.
God! Open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
If You were willing to sacrifice, I would give, (but) You are not pleased with the burnt offering.
A sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit; God will not despise the contrite and humble heart.
Benefit, O Lord, according to Your good pleasure, Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, offerings and burnt offerings; then they will offer calves on your altar.

PSALM 90

This psalm, in addition to worship, is often read when they want to protect themselves from the evil influence of evil people and evil spirits.
Who else but the Lord is our Intercessor and our Refuge? Call on the Lord - and He will deliver you from secret wiles (“nets of a stalker”), from offensive words (“rebellious words”), from unexpected maliciousness (“a thing that passes in darkness”), from obvious and open harm (“midday meeting”) , from the spirit of laziness and despondency ("noonless"). The man to whom the Lord assigns His Angels cannot be harmed by the most evil and strong animals: a viper (“asp”), a boa constrictor (“serpent”), and even a mysterious animal with a rooster’s head, a toad’s body and three tails that kills with one look and breath ("basilisk").
Trust in the Lord and you will not be put to shame.

Psalm 90 David. Uninscribed among the Jews.

He who lives with the help of the Most High will dwell under the roof of the God of heaven,
He will say to the Lord: “You are my intercessor and my refuge, my God and I trust in Him.”
For He will deliver you from the snare of fishers and from the rebellious word,
With His shoulders He will protect you and under His wings you will be safe, His truth will protect you with a shield.
You will not be afraid of the terror of the night, of the arrow flying by day,
Calamity, comprehending at night, illness and the midday demon.
A thousand will fall beside you, and ten thousand to your right, but they will not come near you.
Only with your eyes you will look and you will see the reward of sinners.
For (you said:) "You, O Lord, are my hope," you have chosen the Most High as your refuge.
Evil will not come upon you, and the plague will not come near your dwelling.
For He will command His Angels concerning you, to keep you in all your ways.
They will take you in their hands so that you do not stumble your foot on a stone.
You will step on the asp and the basilisk, and you will trample on the lion and the snake.
“Because he trusted in Me, I will deliver him, I will cover him, for he has known My name.
He will call to Me and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will deliver him and glorify him,
I will satisfy him with length of days, and show him My salvation.”

PSALM 102

The Lord is our Heavenly Father. He created us, He cares for all our needs. And, of course, our soul is looking for words of gratitude to the Giver of all kinds. Good (kind) words add up to the blessing of the Lord. Beautiful inspired blessings have been left to us by Bible prophets and psalmists. We often hear them in our Christian worship. So you will meet the one hundred and second psalm as part of the Six Psalms at Matins and at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy.
It may seem strange to you that David makes calls to his soul (“Bless the Lord, O my soul”). But this is a common technique among the creators of prayers both in the Old and New Testaments. In the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which is read in the church during Great Lent, there are many such invocations.
Through the whole psalm runs the thought that the mercy of the Lord always rests on those who fear Him. Whoever fears God is afraid of committing sins. A meek, God-fearing person knows that we are like wild (village) flowers: today they bloom, and tomorrow they have withered. Fulfill the commandments - and your days will be prolonged (renewed), like those of an eagle (according to legend, the eagle lives so long because youth returns to it).

Psalm 102. Psalm of David.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all my inward being, His holy name!
Bless the Lord, my soul, and do not forget all His blessings:
He forgives all your iniquities, heals all your diseases,
Delivers your life from the grave, surrounds you with mercy and bounty,
Fulfills your good desires, your youth will be renewed like an eagle's.
The Lord shows mercy and truth to all those who are offended.
He showed His ways to Moses, to the sons of Israel His desires.
The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and many-merciful.
He will not be angry to the end and will not be indignant forever.
He dealt with us not according to our iniquities, nor did He repay us according to our sins.
For how high the sky is above the earth, (so great) the Lord showed His mercy powerfully on those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west, (so) He removed our iniquities from us.
As a father has mercy on his sons, so the Lord has mercy on those who fear Him.
For He knows our education: He remembers that we are dust,
Man is like grass, his days are like a wild flower, and so he fades.
As soon as the spirit has passed in it, (it will no longer) be, and it will no longer recognize its place.
The mercy of the Lord from age to age on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness is upon the sons of sons, who keep His covenant and remember His commandments to do them.
The Lord has prepared His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over everything.
Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, doing His word, listening to the voice of His words.
Bless the Lord, all His forces, His servants who do His will.
Bless the Lord, all His works, in every place of His dominion.

PSALM 103

It is with this psalm that Vespers begins in the church. In a figurative and poetic form, David describes in it the beauty and reasonable well-being of the world around us. Marvelous are the works of God in heaven, in the air, on earth and in the sea. And from the contemplation of this glory and magnificence of the works of God, the soul of the psalmist comes to an enthusiastic thanksgiving to the Creator.
To better understand the meaning of the psalm, reread the first chapter of the book of Genesis. In agreement with Moses, David depicts the Creator of all things dwelling in unapproachable light. Flaming with love for God, Angels serve Him with trepidation. Our Earth is like a house, the upper part of which (the “highest”) is covered with clouds. Clouds, like winds, obey God's Providence ("ascent"). Everything is in the hand of God, everything is arranged wisely in the laws given by the Lord. The earth itself, which is based on the commandment of God, will never topple (“will not bow”).
Know their limits and waters and mountains. Rains and springs in the valleys ("in the wilds") give water to animals ("onagri" - wild donkeys) and birds, give rise to grass and cereals that feed livestock and humans. Nothing and no one is forgotten by God: neither the mighty Lebanese cedars growing in the fields, nor herons (erodii) nesting on the highest trees. For the benefit of all living things, the Creator established the alternation of day and night, work and rest. And everything that exists in the seas, including the largest inhabitant of the seas, the whale playing in the water (“this serpent”), all glorifies the wisdom of the Creator. All living things turned to dust, if the Giver of all kinds did not have care for His creation. And man, as the crown of creation, is responsible for this beautiful God's world. Wicked people who do not protect it, who unreasonably use the gifts of God, are threatened by the wrath of God ("may the sinners disappear from the earth"). It would be good to always remember this thought and take care of nature.

Psalm 103. Psalm of David about the existence of the world.

Bless the Lord, my soul! Oh my God!
You are wonderfully great, You have clothed yourself in glory and splendor.
You clothe yourself with light like a garment, you stretch out the sky like a skin cover (of a tent),
You cover Your heights with water, You make the clouds Your chariot, You walk on the wings of the wind.
You create Your angels with spirits and Your servants with fiery flames.
He founded the earth on its firmament; it will not bend forever and ever.
The abyss, like a garment, is its cover.
On the mountains there will be water:
They will flee from Your rebuke, they will fear the sound of Your thunder.
They rise (like) mountains and descend (like) plains to the place that You appointed them.
You have set a limit that they will not cross, nor will they return to cover the earth.
You direct the springs into the valleys: waters flow among the mountains,
Water all wild animals; wild donkeys (of them) quench their thirst.
The birds of the air dwell with them, from the midst of the rocks they utter a voice.
You will solder the mountains from Your heights: the earth is saturated with the fruits of Your works.
You grow grass for livestock and greenery for the benefit of people, to bring (them) food from the ground.
And wine gladdens the heart of man, so that his face (his) shone (as it were) with oil.
Bread strengthens the human heart. The trees of the field shall be satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon which You have planted,
Bird nests are built there: the stork's dwelling rules them.
High mountains for deer, rocky rock - a refuge for hares.
He created the moon to (indicate) the times, the sun knows its west.
You stretch out the darkness and the night comes, during which all the animals of the forest walk,
Young lions roaring for prey to beg God for food for themselves.
The sun rose and they gathered and lay down in their lairs.
A man (then) goes out to his work and to his work until evening.
How majestic are Your works, O Lord! You have made everything in wisdom.
The earth is full of your creatures.
This sea is great and spacious: there are reptiles, of which there are no number, small animals with great ones.
There are ships floating there, this serpent that You created to humiliate him.
Everyone is waiting for food from You, so that You will give them in time:
When You give them, they will accept, when You open your hand, everyone will be satisfied with goodness.
And when you turn away your face, they will be troubled, you will take their spirit, and they will disappear and return to their own land.
Send forth your Spirit, and they will be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord be forever! The Lord rejoices in His deeds:
He will look at the earth and make it shake, he will touch the mountains and they will smoke.
I will sing to the Lord in my life; I will sing to my God as long as I exist.
May my (prayer) conversation be sweet to Him, and I will rejoice in the Lord.
May the sinners 35 disappear from the earth and the lawless - so that they do not exist!
Bless the Lord, my soul!

PSALM 150

The book of divine psalms ends with a psalm of praise. The psalmist calls to praise the Lord for His immeasurable majesty and power. This praise will be appropriately majestic if silver trumpets sound, other musical instruments are connected to them - a psalter, a harp, a tympanum.
Saints with their purified spiritual vision see that all living things ("every breath") incessantly offer praise and thanksgiving to the Creator. Our human voice also sounds in this common symphony.

Psalm 150. Alleluia.

Praise God in His saints, praise Him in the firmament of His might.
Praise Him according to His power, praise Him according to His greatness.
Praise Him with the voice of the trumpet, praise Him on the psalter and the harp.
Praise Him on the timbrel and chorus, praise Him on the strings and organ.
Praise Him with loud cymbals, praise Him with loud cymbals.
