DIY polymer clay rooster, master class

The symbol of the next year, 2017, will be. Therefore, in order for him to bring us good luck throughout the year, it is advisable to have some kind of talisman with his image. For example, you can make a “Romantic Cockerel” keychain from polymer clay, which will not only serve as a wonderful decoration, but will also protect you from troubles.

Required materials and tools:

Polymer clay (baked)

Stationery knife or blade (scalpel)

Work surface (glass, sheet of paper, tile, etc.)

Stacks (tools)

Wet wipes

Varnish for polymer clay

Brush

Accessories (threaded pin, ring for keychain)

Glue "Moment"

Small drill

How to make a rooster out of polymer clay, the symbol of 2017, with your own hands, photo

To make the polymer clay a little pliable, you need to knead it in your hands before working. As a result, it will become softer and more elastic, convenient for modeling. It is worth noting that polymer clay “loves” various dirt (lint, dust, dyes, etc.), it is very attractive to it. Therefore, while working (as well as before starting work), it is advisable to keep your hands, tools and work surface perfectly clean - wipe often with wet wipes.

  1. Roll a small piece of white polymer clay into a ball. Form a long drop out of it - this part will be the breast and neck of the cockerel.
  2. In the wide part of the drop, form a “skirt” by flattening it with your fingers.
  3. Using a stack or toothpick, give the resulting “skirt” a waviness.
  4. Roll out a small piece of white polymer clay into a thin “sausage” and cut into small pieces (preferably the same size).
  5. Roll each resulting piece into a pea.
  6. Soften a small piece of red clay and roll it into a ball - this is the lower part of the cockerel figurine. It is worth noting that during sculpting it is necessary to adhere to proportions.
  7. Attach prepared white peas to the resulting red ball, placing them in a checkerboard pattern. Tip: the cockerel does not have to be made with polka dots, but it will not be so romantic and cheerful.
  8. Roll the piece in your hands so that the peas are well attached to the red ball and its surface becomes smooth.
  9. Roll out a thin “sausage” from orange polymer clay. Cut it into six pieces of equal length. Tip: if you don’t have orange polymer clay, mix a small piece of red clay with yellow clay (about 1/5 in proportion).
  • From the resulting segments, form long drops and connect (in the thick part) in threes. These are the legs of a cockerel.
  • Connect the parts together: the body (red ball with polka dots) and legs. Smooth the joint well.
  • Also attach the neck and breast (white part). Carefully smooth the joint with your fingers, trying not to disturb the wavy edge. Using a stack or a toothpick, straighten the edge and, if necessary, give it even more waviness.
  • In the place where the tail will be, lift the “skirt” up a little.
  • From orange polymer clay, roll out elongated drops for the future tail.
  • Attach the resulting parts to the main figure.
  • Make eyes for the cockerel. To do this, roll two white peas and form them into drops. Then glue two small black balls (smaller in size) on top. Make highlights from white clay to make the cockerel's eyes come alive.
  • For the beak, roll an orange pea, then form it into a cone. Attach the resulting part to the main figure.
  • Make the cockerel "cheeks". To do this, roll two white peas and attach them near the beak.
  • Use a stack or a toothpick to give the “cheeks” texture. Roll out a piece of red polymer clay into a thin rope and divide it into two equal pieces. Form drops from each, connect in a narrow part - this is the “earrings - tie” of the cockerel.
  • Attach the “earrings” under the beak, carefully smooth the joint.

  • For the scallop, roll out a thin rope of red polymer clay in the same way and cut into 4-5 segments. Form each into an elongated drop. Connect all the pieces, securing them in the narrow part.
  • Attach the cockerel to the head and smooth it out well. Give the scallop parts the desired direction.
  • The base for the polymer clay rooster keychain is almost ready, all that remains is to bake it. Before baking, it is advisable to carefully “remove” all dirt by wiping with a damp cloth. Bake the part for the keychain according to the instructions included with the clay you used in your work. Each polymer clay manufacturer has different requirements. For example, German polymer clay Fimo is baked at a temperature of 110-130 0 C for 20-30 minutes (depending on the thickness of the product). Tip: after use, the oven should be thoroughly wiped with a damp cloth.
  • When the workpiece has completely cooled, make a hole in the upper part (at the scallop) using a thin drill. Glue the threaded pin and secure the keychain ring. Cover the polymer clay keychain with a double layer of varnish and leave it in a ventilated area until it dries completely.
  • The polymer clay keychain “Cockerel” is ready to please its owner and bring him good luck.

Creative success! Give such a gift with best wishes and a good mood, then such a trinket will become a real good luck talisman for everyone who wears it!

Before we know it, winter will come, and with it the New Year will rush in. This year's main favorite, the Fire Monkey, will be replaced by the Fire Rooster, the symbol of 2017. And he will become our mascot for the next year. In order to somehow respect the rooster, we can make a unique magnet “Cockerel” for the refrigerator with our own hands, which will not only decorate our home, but also serve as a talisman against all troubles.

To work you will need:

- polymer clay (baked),
- rolling pin,
- stationery knife,
- dots (tools),
- work surface (sheet of paper, tiles, etc.),
- wet wipes,
- instant glue,
- varnish for clay,
- brush,
- accessories for the magnet (base).

1. Mix black and white polymer clay in a ratio of 1: 4 (one part black clay and four parts white). Don't try to achieve a uniform color, leave the clay with a marbled effect. Set a small piece aside; it will come in handy a little later. Roll the softened clay into a ball, the size of which will determine the size of the future magnet.

3. Using a rolling pin (or a perfume bottle), roll the drop into a layer 6-8 mm thick without disturbing its original shape - this is the basis of the magnet. Correct any irregularities and, if necessary, correct the shape of the part.

4. Using a sharp tip (or a toothpick or a needle), add texture to the entire surface, imitating the feathers of a cockerel. To do this, “loose” the polymer clay, starting from the bottom of the part. Carefully process the entire surface, not forgetting the sides.

5. Soften a piece of polymer clay, not necessarily the same shade (you can use leftover clay), and roll it into a layer 3-5 mm thick, larger than the size of the main part for the magnet. All other parts will have to fit on this blank - this is the substrate.

6. For the fence, you need to create a sausage with imitation wood. To do this, cut small pieces of polymer clay of different shades (chocolate, beige, cognac, etc.) into small pieces of various sizes. Tip: while working, it is recommended to frequently wipe your hands with wet wipes so as not to “stain” the clay, because it very quickly attracts dirt to itself.

8. Roll it into a sausage and twist it a little, then squeeze it (gather it back into a barrel). Repeat the procedure until you get the desired design. It is worth noting that if rolled out for a long time, the shades may mix.

9. Cut the resulting sausage (10mm thick) into segments corresponding to the height of the future fence.

10. Transfer the main part to the rolled out layer (backing) and with light movements, so as not to disturb the texture, press both parts together. If the feathering is damaged somewhere, correct it with a needle or toothpick. At the bottom of the main part, “assemble” a fence from simulated boards. Press well into the backing, paying special attention to the bottom and sides.

11. Apply natural roughness and some cracks on the surface of the fence with a stack or a toothpick so that the fence looks as real as possible.

12. For the rooster wings, roll out the remaining marble polymer clay into a layer 2-4 mm thick. Carefully cut out two identical pieces.

13. Give the wings a texture - an imitation of plumage, as in the case of the body.

14. Attach the resulting blanks to the base, give the desired shape and correct any irregularities. Roll two peas out of red clay and flatten them a little. Place on the base where you want your earlobes or cheeks to be (slightly above the middle).

16. Attach to base. Give your cheeks texture using a dot (stack) with a small ball.

17. Roll two peas from orange polymer clay and give them a triangular shape, then bend an acute corner of one piece - these are the parts of the beak.

19. Form the eyes from three different colored and sized cakes: orange at the bottom, then black, and the final smallest pea – a highlight. Add texture to the earrings too.

20. Roll out the red clay into a thin rope and wrap it around the perimeter of the eye, sort of simulating eyelids. Give them texture too.

21. Proceed to the final part, sculpting the scallop. To do this, roll red polymer clay into a sausage and cut into various segments. Roll each into a long drop.

22. Starting from the very bottom (closest to the backing), attach all the drops, forming a ridge. Press all the pieces well until they adhere. Give the comb the desired shape and direction.

23. Apply texture. Cut out the shape of a rooster along the contour. If necessary, correct unevenness, apply texture, etc. While the part is still “raw,” you can change something.

24. Transfer to glass (or a baking tray used for clay only). Bake the magnet base in the oven following the directions on the package. Clay from different manufacturers has different baking times and temperatures. If you used Fimo clay, bake the product for half an hour at a temperature of 110 0C. Tip: after using the oven, it should be thoroughly washed with soapy water and wiped with a clean cloth.

25. Cover the cooled part with a layer of special varnish, used only for polymer clay. Leave in the fresh air until the varnish is completely dry. Glue the fittings for the magnet.

26. This is how you can make a magnet with your own hands from polymer clay “The Rooster is the symbol of 2017.” Now he is ready to decorate your refrigerator and protect you from all adversity.

Also see how to do it

Considering the fact that polymer clay gets dirty very quickly, collecting all the debris (motes of dust, lint, colors), it is recommended to occasionally wipe your hands with wet wipes while working. This is especially necessary to do when transitioning from one color to another.
Before you start sculpting, you need to knead the polymer clay well in your hands so that it becomes soft and pliable.
1. Draw a cockerel and cut out a template from paper or cardboard.

2. Since 2017 is the year of the fiery rooster, the base for the magnet will be in fiery tones. Connect three triangles of different shades into a rectangle.

3. Using a rolling pin, rolling into a layer, bending in half and rolling again, bring the clay to a smooth color transition. To do this, you will need to repeat the process of rolling and folding several times (in one direction so as not to mix the colors).

4. The resulting layer, 0.3-0.5 cm thick, should correspond to the size of your template. Attach a paper template and carefully cut out the blank.

5. For further convenience, transfer the base to glass or another sheet of paper. From clay of the same shades (residues from the color transition), form elongated drops of various sizes. Glue them to the base, forming the first row of the tail. It is advisable to alternate details - feathers in size and color.

6. Use a stack (or a toothpick, a needle) to “push” all the resulting parts, imitating feathers. When one row is ready, you can move on to the next, repeating the process. It is important that the feathers are of different shades and sizes. Use the same principle to make a cockerel and a wing.

7. “Grow” the comb. To do this, roll out red polymer clay into a layer (0.3-0.5 cm) and cut out the part using a template. Attach the comb to the base and smooth it well to remove any air bubbles between layers. Using a stack (toothpick), create a natural look by making grooves at the base. Try not to flatten the part; it should remain voluminous.

8. Roll small peas from microscopic pieces of clay of different shades and form droplets.

9. In the place where the eye should be, glue droplets in the shape of a flower, slightly pushing the middle part of each drop with a needle (toothpick). Using orange polymer clay, “grow” the beak: cut out a small part and attach it to the base. Smooth out any uneven surfaces well.

10. Distribute the remaining drops tightly over the free surface of the base. Use small punctures to imitate the feathers of a rooster.

11. Add volume to the paws and “earrings” (below the beak, near the neck). These parts also need to be rolled out into a layer, then cut out and attached to the base. Press well, paying special attention to the edges.

12. Make a cockerel’s eye from a small black pea. Well, he came to life.

13. The polymer clay rooster is almost ready, all that remains is to give it a golden hue. To do this, use a soft brush to apply golden powder (or shadow) onto the surface of the magnet base. Thanks to the texture (feather), the colors will “play out” in a new way. The magnet blank must be baked in the oven without removing it from the glass. The time and temperature are selected depending on the instructions on the polymer clay packaging (they are different for each manufacturer). For example, for German polymer clay Fimo, the required baking time is 30 minutes, at a temperature of 110-1300C. After use, the oven must be washed with soapy water and wiped. It is not recommended to touch the baked workpiece until it has completely cooled (warm clay is still soft and the shape of the product may be distorted).

14. Glue the iron base for the magnet on the back side. Using a soft brush, apply a layer of polymer clay varnish to the surface of the cockerel. Leave to dry. Tip: Some polymer clay varnishes require re-baking the product after application, so read the instructions carefully before use. There is no such need for Fimo varnish.

15. The polymer clay rooster is ready. You can decorate your home using it for its intended purpose. A magnet can also be a wonderful New Year's souvenir for friends.

The cockerel is the symbol of 2017

New Year 2017 is the year of the Red (Fire) Rooster, and the most popular gift will be its figurine or image. The needlewomen of Krestik have a good tradition: to prepare thoroughly for the New Year holiday. And this year will be no exception. Many of us will make or are already making a rooster with our own hands, or even not one, but several at once! After all, you must definitely please your family and friends with a handmade symbol of the year, and yourself with the fascinating process of creating this very symbol using various handmade techniques.

Creating a kind of GUIDE TO MASTER CLASSES from the Internet is also a tradition of our handicraft site, which was born a year ago. For you, dear craftswomen, we have selected only the best master classes online. Admire, look closely, discuss and choose the most colorful rooster! And then sew/knit/draw/blind/weave it. So, what technology can you use on the eve of the New Year holiday?

If you don’t have time to work, it doesn’t matter. The article contains links to craftswomen who sell finished works.

Cockerels made of paper and on paper

Making cards with the kids

If you are not a professional cardmaker, then before you start creating cards, be sure to read our article “Learning to make New Year cards with your own hands using the Scrapbooking technique”. In it you will not only find many ideas, but also get acquainted with the basic rules for creating postcards.

Any cockerel drawn by your child can be placed on a postcard. If it’s difficult for your child to figure out how to draw a rooster with his own hands, then show him this step-by-step instructions:

And then, it’s a matter of technology. Cut out the cockerel and make it the centerpiece of the composition. For example, your card can be this simple but cute. In your work, use New Year's paper and a bright red ribbon, add snowflakes, twigs and other holiday paraphernalia. Once you have a basic idea, the process of creating a card becomes much easier!

If your child likes to color black and white pictures, give him this opportunity. Print the card template with a cockerel on thick cardboard and let your child get to work. Next, by cutting out a ball blank, you can add voluminous snowflakes to the card, glue half-beads imitating New Year's balls, etc., etc. Give free rein to your and your baby's imagination))

YOU WILL NEED IT

You will find 8 more templates for coloring, as well as 2 step-by-step instructions for drawing more realistic roosters in archive, which you can download quickly and for free!

Take note of the idea with a cockerel on a stick, like on Elena Yurchenko’s postcard. Her cockerels are cut out of felt, or you can cut them out of paper.

Roosters made of colored paper

An applique made of colored paper can also be placed on a greeting card. But such an application can itself act as a postcard. To draw and carefully cut out all the details, children will need the help of their parents, but they can glue them themselves.

Olga-15 suggests making funny cockerels out of paper in her master class.

The Rooster blank is a rectangular sheet of flexible paper or thin cardboard, folded in half lengthwise. Its size is 13.5x10 cm. We make 7-10 inclined slits along the fold line (approximately every 1 cm). Their angle of inclination is 50-70 degrees, and their depth is ¾ of the height of the folded sheet.

Ekaterina Ivanova in her video tutorial shows how to make a red rooster using the Origami technique:

Roosters using Quilling technique

A very interesting idea is to lay out only a luxurious rooster tail from quilling paper. It's not as hassle as laying out a whole rooster, and it can turn out very impressive! Here is a rooster without a tail as a basis (see the photo below for how it looked in the original).

Print it on a color printer, and then fantasize about the tail. As an example, here is one such work (although the tail here is modest, but you will try, right?))

And if you are not afraid to make a whole rooster using the Quilling technique, then you can use this ready-made postcard as a basis:

Or this template:

A cheat sheet on the basic elements of Quilling to help you:

Button applique

And here are absolutely stunning handsome roosters, made of multi-colored buttons, half-beads, rhinestones and beads! You can take the contours of the cockerels from our archive as a basis (link just above).

Crochet cockerels

Many needlewomen are familiar with the crochet hook and will be happy to knit a cockerel from multi-colored threads. And Krestik will help you decide on a model and offer several master classes on this type of needlework.

You can also buy knitted cockerels from Svetlana.

Felt roosters

The fastest and easiest options for creating a symbol of 2017 are roosters from felt. The material is easy to process, holds the shape of the toy well, and does not require processing of seams. On the contrary, hand stitches along the face of the product give it a special flavor and charm.

Roosters in Tilda style

Well, how can we manage now in our lives without the tilde-Rooster? On the ToySew website there is a master class on sewing this popular toy.

Master Vetic on her blog posted patterns for the Rooster and Chicken Peas based on the tilde pattern. An interesting couple will turn out if you put in the effort and patience!

And for inspiration:

Cockerel Yurik from Orange Toys

Maria Fedorova made a funny video about her tilda roosters (the link to the patterns is in the description of the video!):

Coffee cock toys

Aromatic, or coffee, toys compete with tildes in popularity. There are roosters using this technique.

A coffee cockerel can be like this:

Photo from the site http://zabavochka.com

You can easily sew it yourself using one of the patterns suggested above. Krestik talked about all the intricacies of creating coffee toys in this master class.

If you think that you cannot cope with such work yourself, contact a specialist. Yulia Charikova made enough branded toys with the smell of coffee and put them up for sale at this address.

Fur interior toys

Oksana Svyatkovskaya will show her vision of a rooster and show how to sew it correctly using ready-made patterns. Her Rooster is made of faux fur, but who’s to say that it doesn’t happen or that it’s not good?)

In the workshop Everything for creativity (dljatvorchestva) there are a lot of blanks for painting and decoupage. Choose and create!

This is the beauty you can get:

If you don’t want to make a souvenir in the shape of a rooster, then you can decorate any wooden surface with an image of a rooster. The scope for creativity here is simply limitless!!! Here are just a few examples for inspiration:

Roosters felted from wool

Some craftswomen make wool toys that look like real ones! Let's admire and be inspired! And if you really want to buy one of these beauties, then look for them at the Masters Fair (the link is on each photo).

Elenia collected in one place many different Roosters felted from wool and suggested to MK how to create one of them. It turns out very cute!

Roosters embroidered with cross stitch, beads and ribbons

Perhaps you love embroidery more than other types of needlework. Then you can place the symbol of the year on a pillowcase, decorate it in the form of a panel, a picture in a frame or a brooch. The main thing is that the image of the Rooster warms your soul. And if you give away your work, find out the preferences of the recipient.

You will find more than 50 different patterns for embroidering roosters and cockerels in a special album
