Description of the apartment in English: grace your house, and not let that grace you. My Flat - My apartment. Topic in English with translation - Essays, Abstracts, Reports Description of a one-room apartment in English with translation

The description of the apartment is one of the conversational topics that is required for English learners. The fact is that it includes prepositions of place, lexical material on the topic “Furniture”, and tenses of the Simple group.

In addition, here, like nowhere else, you can flaunt your knowledge of adjectives and elegant phrases, proverbs and idioms. For the British, home is a very important place and special in its own way, because the mentality of this people is based on a certain clannishness, family dynasticity and the preservation of traditions. That is why, if an Englishman asks you to describe his apartment, there is no need to be shy. He does this not out of idle curiosity, but out of a sincere desire to find common ground with his interlocutor. By the way, this is unlikely to occur to an American. Below we will look at the general scheme of describing an apartment in English, and also get acquainted with one English proverb that reflects the British attitude towards the house in general.

An Englishman's home is his castle

No matter how hackneyed this proverb may seem, it is equally true for any nation. But if in our version it simply sounds like “My home is my castle,” then the English proverb sounds like "An Englishman's home is his castle". It can be used in the first sentences of an essay, along with phrases “East or West – home is best”(Away is good, but home is better) and "There's no place like home"(There is no place in the world better than home). You can use them all, or you can choose the one that best suits your description from the selection we have compiled.

Below we will provide a template for a simple school essay, which, however, can be used for the simplest description of an apartment in a conversation with.

Describing the rooms

A logical continuation of the text after the introductory phrase will be a general description of the apartment, its layout and number of rooms. For example:

“My flat is not very big but cozy. There are three rooms in it. There’s a living room, my parents’ bedroom and my room. I like it very much and I think that our flat is the best in the world” – “My apartment is not very big, but cozy. There are three rooms in it - the hall, the parents' room and my room. I love our apartment and think it’s the best in the world.”

Spoken English via Skype:
-Classes at a time convenient for you
-Teacher who clearly explains vocabulary and grammar
-Practice communication in real life situations
-600 rub. in 45 minutes

Then it makes sense to briefly describe each of the rooms without going into detail. It’s another matter if your task is to describe not the apartment as a whole, but a specific room. It is better to follow the order “Hallway - kitchen - bathroom - living room - living rooms”. The description might be something like this:

“We have a hall in our flat. There are a lot of clothes there, a wardrobe and a big mirror. If you go further you will see a kitchen on the left. It is very little but we like to spend time there drinking tea. On the right there’s a bathroom. It is little too. There are also three rooms in our flat. The first one is the living room. We watch TV, read and gather together in it. My parents’ room in smaller than the living room but it is bigger than my room after all. My room is the smallest one but I like it most of all because it’s my own cozy nook where I am a master” - “We have a hallway in our apartment. There are a lot of things in it, a dressing table and a large mirror. If you go further, you will see the kitchen on the left. It is very small, but we love to spend time there having tea. To the right is the bathroom. She's small too. Our apartment also has three more rooms. The first is the living room. In it we watch TV, read and spend time together. My parents' room is smaller than the living room, but larger than my room. My room is the smallest, but I like it the most because in it I feel like a master (hostess).”

There are lots of paintings on the walls of the sitting-room and the bookshelves are full of literary classics which have been in my family for a long time. We have a sofa, two comfortable armchairs and a large table in the sitting-room.The room is covered in warm pink wall-paper which makes it a very inviting room to sit in.

I share my bedroom with my sister and I also like this room. We have decorated our room with a variety of pictures and have made it very cozy looking. We also have a bathroom and a toilet so this makes our flat very convenient and luxurious.

We are fortunate that we have very nice neighbors surrounding us so this makes living in a flat very easy and enjoyable.

We have a nice flat in a new block of flats. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, a lift and a chute to carry rubbish down. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat. In the middle of the room we have a square-table with six chairs round it. To the right of the dinner-table there is a wall-unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a wardrobe and some shelves.

At the opposite wall there is a piano and stool before it. Between the two large windows there is a little table with a color TV set on it. Near the TV set there are two cozy armchairs. A small round table, a sofa-bed and a standard lamp are in the left-hand corner. This small table is for newspapers and magazines. My father is used to having a rest sitting on this divan-bed reading books, newspapers, magazines or watching TV.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only one window in it. In this room there are two beds with a bedside-table between them. An alarm-clock and a small lamp with a pink lamp-shade are on the table. In the left-hand corner there is a dressing-table with a big mirror.. In this room we have a built-in wardrobe with coat-hangers to-hang clothes on. There is a thick carpet on the floor and plain light-brown curtains on the window.

The third room is my study. It is not large but very cozy. There isn’t much furniture in it, only the most necessary. It has a writing-table and an armchair before it. In the right-hand corner there is a bookcase full of books, magazines and newspapers. A small table with a radio is standing in the left-hand corner. Near it there is a sofa with some cushions. In my opinion, the study is the best room in our flat.

But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen, I think – the place where the whole family gathers every evening not only to have supper together, but also to speak and rest. I like the English proverb: “My home is my castle” because my flat is, indeed, my castle.

Each of us strives to have comfortable living conditions. The place where we sleep, relax, and spend time with family should have a comfortable atmosphere. A corner where we always happily come, where we rush to get after a working day or a long trip, can be both an apartment and a house. In this article we will tell you how to correctly write a description of an apartment in English.

This topic is not quite complicated. The main thing here is to draw up a description of the apartment one by one. If you want to describe all the details of the room, where everything is located, you can look at the article “Room Description”. When writing a story about the place where you live, try to give general information about the house, rooms, and a little about the furnishings. Any description of an apartment in English should begin with a nice introduction about what home means to you. At the end of the essay, you can indicate whether you like or dislike your home, whether you are satisfied or not, what you would like to change.

First of all I should say that I like my house. I agree with the conclusion that any home reflects the personality of his owner and his habits. Clothes you wear or food you buy and eat are reflection as well. So, we can make up a conclusion about a man looking at his house.

I prefer a comfortable life. I think it is necessary to have everything modern conveniences. It makes life easier, more enjoyable and pleasant. But the atmosphere is more important than conditions. I'd like to say some words about my flat.

We are a family of three. We live in a new five-storyed block of flats. Our flat is on the 5th floor. It is very comfortable. When you enter the flat you can see a small entrance hall. On the right side you can see a closet Then there is a corridor which is much larger than hall. On the left there is a bathroom and a lavatory in the corridor. On the opposite side you are welcome to my room. Walking along the corridor you will come to the kitchen. It is our dining and living room. My parent’s bedroom is on the left from the kitchen. We have all modern conveniences such as cold and hot running water, gas, electricity, central heating, a telephone and a chute.

Our living room is the largest one. It overlooks a park. The window is very large and there is much sunshine in the room. There you can see a sofa, a bookcase, a TV set and two armchairs. There are two pictures on the wall. If you look at the dining part of the room you will see a unit of modern furniture here such as a cooker, a refrigerator, a cupboard, a microwave. We have a table and four chairs. There is much light. My bedroom is not large. There is a sofa, a wardrobe, a table and a chair. There is a computer on the table. Near the table there are some bookshelves. I have a small carpet at my sofa where our dog sleeps. My parents' room is more spacious than mine. There is a large doublebed, a wardrobe, a dresser and a large mirror. Our bathroom and our lavotary are separated. They are not large but very convenient. There is a sink, a bath-tab, a mirror and a set of shelves where we keep our tooth-brushes, creams, shampoos and make-up.

So, I want to finish with the proverb: " Men make houses women make homes". I agree with these words and in my family it is really true. My mother makes a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. My father renovates the flat from time to time. But all of us try to keep it clean.
