The strategy for modernizing Russian school education contains the provision that the main result of the activities of an educational institution should not be the system of knowledge and skills of students in itself. The competency-based approach assumes that children, in addition to mastering individual knowledge and skills, were able to apply them in a certain context.

At our school, learning English is not limited to the classroom. Our school theater in English “Inspiration” is 8 years old and every theater season brings new discoveries. Discovering acting talents, getting to know new plays and musicals. Such performances as “Oliver”, “The book of Jungle”, “Cats”, “Peter Pan”, “Narnia”, “Pippi Longstocking”, “The Sound of Music” have already been presented to the audience.

What competencies does our theater develop? First of all, this communicative competence, which includes knowledge and use of English, while children improve their knowledge, enrich their vocabulary, develop memory and acquire fluency.

The question of choosing a repertoire is very important. It should interest young artists. Children of different ages, from second to ninth grades, take part in the performances. The guys are mastering skills to work in different age groups, which is interesting and useful for both seniors and juniors.

Making the decision to act in a play is a responsible step that not everyone can take. Theater helps to fight complexes, excessive shyness, helps to liberate and find yourself. In this case, it is formed competence of personal self-improvement, coming spiritual and intellectual self-development.

Parents are regular participants in the theater’s trips to festivals and competitions, which brings the family together. It is important that parents begin to perceive their children in a new way; respect from the family and pride in their child arise.

In our theater we do not use ready-made scripts, but create them ourselves, based on primary sources. Guys look for the necessary information on the Internet, analyze it. Improves them information competence.

To create the scenery and costumes of the characters, you need to develop general cultural competence. We mainly stage performances based on the works of English-speaking authors, and getting to know the best examples of the culture of the countries of the language they are learning enriches the children.

At the stage of creating a script, when discussing the characters of the characters, there may be reassessment of values and formation of worldview little artists. In this case, it is formed value-semantic competence. Staging a performance is difficult, painstaking work on the image in all its manifestations. But the result exceeds expectations; the magic of the boys’ transformation on stage knows no bounds. Before our eyes, Cinderella turns into a princess, and the ugly duckling into a dazzling swan.

The theater is a place where a child can try yourself in different roles, which contributes to his self-determination and further self-realization. Thereby developing them social competence.

Children learn acting, stage speech, plastic arts, develop an ear for music, strengthen their voice and, of course, improve their knowledge of the English language.

There are many people who want to play in musicals and plays, and in order not to turn anyone away, we rehearse with two groups of artists. Healthy competition arises, everyone wants to improve and play better.

Music, the festive atmosphere, prizes at competitions and festivals, and audience recognition attract more and more children to the ranks of artists.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

from the Chronicles of Narnia

(Scenes based on the book by C. S. Lewis)

Story teller: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy were sent to the house of an old Professor. They had a great idea to explore the house, and that was how the adventures began.

Lucy: Good evening!

Faun Tumnus: Good evening, good evening! Excuse me, I don’t want to be inquisitive, but should I be right in thinking that you are a Daughter of Eve?

Lucy: My name is Lucy.

Faun Tumnus: But you are (forgive me) a girl?

Lucy: Of course I’m a girl.

Faun Tumnus: How stupid of me! But I’ve never seen a Daughter of Eve… Delighted, delighted ... Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tumnus.

Lucy: I’m very pleased to meet you, Mr. Tumnus.

Faun Tumnus: And may I ask you, oh Lucy Daughter of Eve, how do you have come into Narnia?

Lucy: I've got in through the wardrobe in the spare room. It’s summer there… Narnia? What's that?

Faun Tumnus: This is the land of Narnia! It’s winter in Narnia and we’ll catch cold if we stand here talking in the snow. Let's go. Have tea with me! I'll tell you about Narnia.

Lucy: No...

Faun Tumnus: It’s only round the corner, there’ll be a roaring fire, toast and cake.

Tumnus sings a lullaby:

Where sky and water meet,
Where the waves grow, all grow light and sweet,
Doubt not, lovely, little Lucy
To find what you seek.

Then he bursts into tears.

Lucy: Mr. Tumnus! Don't! What's the matter? Dear Mr. Tumnus, what's wrong?

Faun Tumnus: Oh-oh-oh. I’m crying because I’m such a bad Faun, I’m on the pay of the White Witch!

Lucy: The White Witch? Who's she?

Faun Tumnus: Why, it’s she who makes it always winter. And if I meet a poor child in the wood, one that has never done me any harm, and pretend to be friendly to me I must give them to the White Witch.

Lucy: I'm very sorry, Mr. Tumnus, but please let me go home.

Faun Tumnus: Of course, Lucy. Can you ever forgive me for what I meant to do?

Lucy: Farewell, Mr. Tumnus.

Edmund gets into Narnia.

Story teller: Lucy was so excited when she ran out of the wardrobe, but the others didn’t believe her story, especially Edmund. But he got interested and decided to find out the truth.

Queen: Stop! What, pray, are you?

Edmund: I'm... I'm... my name is Edmund.

Servant: Is that how you address the Queen?

Edmund: I beg your pardon, your Majesty, I didn’t know.

Queen: Don't know the Queen of Narnia?

The Queen sings her song:

Oh, perilous place,
Walk backwards towards you,
Blink disbelieving eyes, chilled to the bone.
Most visibly brave, now apprehended bloom,
First to take this foot to virgin snow.

And I am a magnet for all kinds of deep wonder.
I am a wunderkind. Oh...
And I live the young love first far enough to believe this.
I am a princess on the way to my throne, destined to serve, destined to roam.

Queen: But I repeat – what are you? Are you human?

Edmund: Yes, I am. I got here through a wardrobe door. But nobody knows about it except my brother and two sisters.

Queen: (under her breath) Ha! A wardrobe… A door from the world of men! I’ve heard of such things... My poor child, how cold you look! What would you like best to eat?

Edmund: Turkish delight, your Majesty.

Queen: Are you sure there are just four of you?

Edmund: Yes, your Majesty.

Queen: Son of Adam, I’d so much like to see your brother and two sisters! Will you bring them to me?

Edmund: I'll try.

Story teller: The adventures began for the third time because of the game of hide-and-seek, when all the children got into the wardrobe.

Peter: O-o-oh, look there and there. It's trees all around. And this wet stuff is snow.

Susan: What's this? (reads a note)“The Faun Tumnus is under arrest and awaiting his trial on a charge of High Treason against her Majesty, Queen of Narnia.”

Peter: Who's she? Lucy?

Lucy: She isn't a real Queen at all! She's a horrible witch, the White Witch!

Susan: I wonder if there is any point in going on. I mean, it doesn’t seem particularly safe here. And it’s getting colder every minute.

Edmund: And we have nothing to eat! What about just going home?

Lucy: But we can’t just go home, not after this, don’t you see? It’s all on my account that poor Faun has got into this trouble!

Children sing their song:

We're your friends, we're your friends,
We're your friends to the bitter end!
Make your choice, adventurous stranger!

Strike the bell and bide the danger,
Or wonder, till it drives you mad,
What would have followed if you had.

Susan: Hush! There’s something moving among the trees over there to the left!

Beaver: Wait! Don't be scared! I’m a beaver, I’m Tumnus’s friend.

Peter: And now do please tell us what’s happened to Tumnus.

Beaver: Ah, that’s bad, that’s a very, very bad business. There’s no doubt he was taken off by the police. I got it from a bird who saw it done.

Susan: Please, can anything be done to save him?

Beaver: All shall be done, but it may be harder than you think. Follow me and I’ll show you the way to the Witch’s house. And Aslan is on the move.

Susan: Who's Aslan?

Beaver: Aslan? Why, don’t you know? He's the King. He's in Narnia at the moment. He’ll settle with the White Witch all right, it’s he who will save Mr. Tumnus.

Peter: What on earth are we to do, Mr. Beaver?

Beaver: Do? We must be off at once. We haven’t a minute to spare!

Servant 1: What on the earth are you doing here?

Servant 2: Go away! She`s our Queen. She'll teach you a lesson.

Story teller: The battle was over a few minutes after their arrival.

Theater in English is an opportunity to effectively and quickly learn the language, the so-called “living word”, in which plays and works of art are written and used as the basis for productions. Comparisons, hyperboles, metaphors and other numerous literary and linguistic devices allow you not just to learn, but to understand, to mentally realize the depth, structure and character of Shakespeare’s language. Theater studio in English is one of the most effective, successful and efficient methods of language schools. Children's English theaters show especially impressive results due to their special flexibility, receptivity of children's memory, logic and ability to learn languages.

Theater in English in Moscow is an immersion into the environment of modern and traditional London theater, into the world of drama and vivid images. For children, the main thing in learning is impression, and the world of theater gives the most vivid emotions. In an English theater studio, a child does not just watch a performance. He is a participant. Creator and doer. Understanding, feeling the meaning of a presentation, children learn to think in English, technically, intuitively selecting and using words and expressions correctly, without making mistakes typical of “non-native” speakers.

After a short time, those who attend theater in English demonstrate:

  • A higher level of its mastery, manifested, among other things, in an increase in school performance in English;
  • The ability to independently construct phrases, change, and correctly use words and expressions.

How are classes conducted?

The theater studio in English enrolls schoolchildren from the age of 10. Agreement is possible if the age has not reached 10 years. After passing the English proficiency test, the children, together with the teacher, stage a performance in English, communicating most of the time in English.

Moscow English Theater - the first theater in English in Moscow

Moscow English Theater (MET) is a unique phenomenon for the capital: it is the first and only theater in the capital where absolutely all performances are performed in English, and the actors of the troupe are British. Some of them specially fly thousands of kilometers to play in front of the Moscow audience.

MET was founded in 2013 by the famous English actor Jonathan Bex and professor at Moscow State University. Lomonosov Karina Sagoyan. The purpose of its creation is to bring professional modern English-language theater to Moscow, with its high standards and the best productions of leading British theaters and American Broadway.

Educating Rita, the first performance presented to the Moscow public in 2013, was met with an absolute sell-out. Willie Russell's lyrical comedy, a modern variation of the world famous "Pygmalion" by Bernard Shaw, was highly praised by theater critics. And the famous British BBC presenter Lord Melvin Bragg in his blog later enthusiastically shared his impressions of the production he saw, calling it “a most magnificent creation.”

Every season the theater surprises its fans with new popular and little-known productions to Russian audiences. On October 25, the theater actors will present the play, which in 2012 won the prestigious Evening Standard Best Play Award. Constellations by Nick Payne also received the highest ratings from such authoritative publications as The Daily Telegraph and Time Out.

Today, basically all the performances of the Moscow English Theater take place in the halls of the Mayakovsky Theater, but in the future the actors dream of performing on their own stage, where they will be able to invite lovers and fans of English-language theater.

Rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the original

The rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” is one of the most famous works of the rock opera genre; it does not need not only advertising, but often even no introduction. And for almost half a century of its existence, it has been recognized as a musical classic, a masterpiece and a legend of the music world. The work of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice was initially received ambiguously by critics, but immediately gained enormous popularity among British youth.

In the original, the famous rock opera in Moscow can be seen and listened to at the Stas Namin Theater; it has been successfully running there for more than 10 years. According to the artistic director of the theater, today this production is the closest in sound to the author's version of Jesus Christ Superstar, released on record in 1970. By the way, the vocalist of the legendary Deep Purple was the very first to sing the part of Jesus.

Be careful when ordering tickets, since since 2011, the Namin Theater has also presented a Russian-language interpretation of the rock opera, which alternates with the English version.

Another legendary musical that you can watch in Moscow in its original language is “Singing in the Rain.” Its plot is based on the story from the film of the same name, which the American Film Institute recognized as the best musical film of the last 100 years.

Almost thirty years ago, one of the best musical comedies received a second life, appearing on the stage of one of the theaters in London's West End. The premiere was such a success that two years later the musical was staged on Broadway and was soon awarded one of the most significant theater awards - the Tony.
