Incredible Facts

A Scottish woman recently gave birth to her third set of twins. The probability of such an event is 1 in 500,000.

Karen Rodger, 41, and her husband Colin, 44, from Glasgow, are parents again after having another pair of twins, Rowan and Isla.

Girls are non-identical twins or twins and were born by caesarean section with a difference of 2 minutes.

The couple already have four twin boys: 14-year-old Lewis (Lewis) and Kyle (Kyle) and 12-year-old Finn (Finn) and Jude (Jude).

Roger believed that her family was not completely complete and decided to have another child. The woman found out that she was again expecting twins on an ultrasound scan at the 6th week of pregnancy and sent a message about the addition to the family to her husband.

Upon learning of this, he thought that his wife was joking and answered her: "It's not funny." Roger had to explain to her husband that this was really, really true.

Now the couple and four older brothers are very excited about the addition to the family.

Birth of twins: quintuplets

Another amazing news about the birth of as many as five twins appeared in the Czech Republic. So, the other day, 23-year-old woman Alexandra Kinova gave birth to the first quintuplets in the country.

Four boys: Daniel, Michael, Alex and Martin and baby girl Terezka were born by caesarean section on Sunday.

The head physician at the Prague Institute of Maternal and Child Health said the delivery was uneventful. Alexandra and her five children are now in the intensive care unit.

The twins were conceived naturally and they have a 95 percent chance of growing up healthy. The father of five twins was present at the birth.

The couple lives in the town of Milovich near Prague and they already have an older son.

Twins vs Twins: What's the difference?

Pregnancy with two or more fetuses is called multiple pregnancy. Children born from multiple pregnancies are called twins. Twins can be identical (identical) or non-identical (fraternal).

Identical twins develop from a single egg that has been fertilized by a single sperm. This egg then splits into two or more embryos.

Non-identical twins develop from two different eggs and their fertilization.

Twins can be twins, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets etc., while twins are always twins.

For two decades, the 5 Dionne sisters have been the most popular characters in all of Canada. They were a trademark, their photos were used for posters, for advertising.
Behind the impressive history of acquisitiveness, the business that was done on girls from the moment they were born, lies the history of dishonest people who did not feel the slightest remorse, and, as a result, the twins did not have a very successful life.

On May 8, 1934, in the city of Corbay - northwest of Ontario, an unprecedented event occurred for Canada, a woman gave birth to five twins in the seventh month of pregnancy and they all survived. Just think: In 1934! At that time, infant mortality was high, the quintuplets seemed to have no chance at all to survive. All children survived.
In the photo, next to their mother: Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emily and Marie Reine.

One fine day, a man called the local newspaper in the larger town of Callender and announced in an uncertain voice that he had quintuplets and would like to advertise this event. The editor, not believing his ears, asked again: “What are you talking about? Is it really five at once? Nothing more sensational has ever happened in their town! "My God! It's a miracle! the editor exclaimed excitedly, "if that's true, it'll be free for you."

The amazing news about the appearance of the Dion sisters spread throughout Canada in a few days. Their small legs were no thicker than fingers, and miniature bodies weighing about 600 g easily fit in the palm of your hand. The midwife who delivered the birth was convinced that the babies would live no more than an hour, and in a hurry she sprinkled them with holy water, christening them with the names: Annette, Marie, Emily, Yvonne and Cecile.

The history of the birth of quintuplets

The girls were born to poor farmer Oliva (1903-1979), mother Elzire Dion (1909-1986), in a house without running water or electricity, where five other family members lived.

Elzire suspected that she was pregnant with twins, but no one suggested that quintuplets were possible. The babies were born two months prematurely. Later, genetic tests showed that the girls were identical and originated from a single egg. The mother of the quintuplets reported that a slight tone in the third month of pregnancy was accompanied by the release of a strange object, which may have been the sixth fetus. The successful birth of quintuplets is attributed to Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe.

The babies, wrapped in heated blankets, were placed in an ordinary wicker basket borrowed from the neighbors. They were brought into the kitchen and placed near the stove door to keep warm. One by one, the girls were taken out of the basket and massaged with olive oil. For the first 24 hours, the girls ate water sweetened with corn syrup every two hours. By the second day, they were moved to a laundry basket that was larger than the previous one and warmed up with heating pads. The girls were woken up every two hours and fed a mixture of cow's milk, boiled water, two tablespoons of corn syrup, and one or two drops of rum for stimulation.

Striving for profit

When the sisters were 6 months old, their father decided to show his daughters at the Chicago World's Fair, which prompted the Canadian authorities to seriously organize an unusual show. The father signed the contract, however, the next day he canceled it, but it was too late.

The authorities built a special pavilion with ten huge windows and a gallery from where people could see unusual girls. The Dion sisters were in the exhibition pavilion from 1935 to 1943, and during this time they were seen by more than 3 million people. Thanks to the sisters, the Chicago Exposition became a major city attraction, which caused an unprecedented influx of tourists. The money collected from watching the famous twins went to a specially opened account, in favor of the Dion sisters.

The most famous twins have become something of a cult. Several films have been made about them in Hollywood. Enterprises producing baby food, clothes, powders and other goods for children successfully used their photographs as advertising. The girls were kept like animals in the zoo, which was evidence of one of the most cynical ways in which children are used for profit.

Covers of famous magazines, commercials, banner ads... it created the image of the five Dion twins.

Composite dolls made in 1937 by the American company Madame Alexander, depicting Marie, Emily, Cecile, Annette and Yvonne Dionne.

They had such fame in the country and even beyond its borders that in 1939, the King of Great Britain, who was on an official visit to Toronto, visited the girls to look at them as a curiosity.

The parents decided to look for a lawyer who would relentlessly deal with the court again and again, forcing him to recognize the decision to take the children away as monstrous and unfair.
Meanwhile, the five twins were dragged across the country and taken to Hollywood, where they were filmed for the first time when they were just two years old.

In 1943, when the girls were 9 years old, the court ruled in favor of the Dion couple, returning their daughters to them.

The Canadian authorities built a large house in Callander with the aim of settling the entire Dion family there. This idea was not entirely successful, as the sisters were unsuitable for such a life. The father was irritated that he was deprived in the division of income, and the children, accustomed to living in an aviary, could not get used to the new way of life. The twins lived in this house until the age of 16, after which they were sent to a boarding school.

But on May 28, 1952, everything changed. The twins turned 18 and the first thing they did was close the business that had existed from the very first moment they were born. The second decision was also unanimous and unambiguous - they each left home in search of their own destiny.

Timid, withdrawn girls were not capable of normal communication with other people. Three years later, Emily went to the monastery, where she was diagnosed with epileptic seizures, which caused her premature death. For her sisters, this was a real blow, which prompted them to write the book “We were five”, where they indignantly accused the authorities and their family of soulless cynicism and immorality.

“We are ordinary large families”

Varya Artamkina: " Immediately after the birth of our daughters, it was not easy to realize that we had five children, five new lives. But children filled our lives with happiness. I have always wanted to have children, and I am very glad that I have many of them.

Mom Varvara Artamkina with her daughters

To be honest, I see few differences between our family and any large family. My husband and I are deeply convinced that with one child it is much more difficult, since he feels the constant attention of his parents very much, and therefore is much more naughty. And when there are five children at once, they understand that their mother is alone and cannot be torn apart.

The hardest

Varya Artamkina: " I am an independent person, and I like to cope with all situations on my own. Therefore, it was most difficult at some point to feel helpless. When the children were one year old, I did not have the opportunity to go outside with them alone, because physically I could not pull the strollers out alone and then bring them back.

At first, the feeding process took a long time. It turned out that when you finish giving the babies the first feeding, after an hour you already need to give the second. Otherwise, everything is simple and easy ... "

No babysitter

Varya Artamkina:“Not a single nanny is ready to take on the responsibility of caring for five children at once, and it is difficult for me to take care of children together with a stranger. Therefore, my husband and I managed on our own and with the help of relatives. Sometimes the husband's sisters came to help us (Mitya has six of them), both grandmothers and the godmother helped, who was always ready to take, bring the children, cook and buy something, take a walk with them. And now my daughters and I appoint duties around the house, and each has her own household duties.

When Varvara and Dmitry flew in from London with the kids, the Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs Ludmila Shevtsova On behalf of the Moscow government, she handed them the keys to a new four-room apartment and promised help.

Varya Artamkina:“The apartment turned out to be really beautiful, very large, in a good area on Krasnaya Presnya, next to the zoo. There is a huge elevator in the house, in which all our strollers were freely placed. The state-owned company also helped us to make repairs in the apartment.

The Libero company, which provided us with diapers, provided significant assistance. Mixtures were also given to us free of charge. We are very grateful for this help.

There were the usual benefits of a large family, for example, in a large family, children and one parent are entitled to free travel. In the beginning, the girls were assigned to the hospital, where they were observed by very good doctors. However, from the age of two, they were sent to the general flow of polyclinics, and we simply stopped going there.

Daughters

Varya Artamkina:“All our girls - Elizabeth, Alexandra, Nadezhda, Tatyana and Varvara - are very different. Both in character and appearance.

Teacher Rimma Yurievna listens to the girls' story about the family

One daughter, who was born our fourth, was ill a lot. She often had pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. However, this year, thank God, she got stronger.

The girls are very friendly and love to do everything together. If one goes to draw, the rest try to join. And so in everything! The girls hold on to each other, this is a characteristic feature of the twins. Of course, they sometimes quarrel during games, because they start to share something, they cannot agree among themselves. Each claims leadership in its own way. There is no obvious leader among them now. This is an unconscious struggle where everyone can show their superiority in something. For example, one reads better, the other plays the most interesting.

Some of the daughters are mentally ready for school, while others still want to play. For the second year now, all five have been learning English, reading, math, and going to the children's choir studio. This is a professional music studio, and class attendance is monitored quite strictly, homework assignments are given. It cannot be said that girls go to classes as a holiday, but everyone, of course, understands that this is important and necessary.

Tatyana Artamkina

At home, my grandmother took piano lessons with the girls, but regular lessons with five are not easy. And I can’t send them to a music school yet - it will be problematic for everyone to rehearse at home at once.

Of course, it’s not easy for me to give each of my daughters time for personal communication, we don’t have many such minutes with the girls. But this is normal for any large family. Each daughter, for example, loves to travel alone somewhere with me, even to the doctor, because this is an individual time with her mother.

Alexandra Artamkina

Most of all, I want our daughters to grow up to be kind and good people. We found our job, our place in life.”

School

Varya Artamkina:“The choice of school was obvious for us: our daughters entered the Traditional Gymnasium (St. Peter's School), which my husband and I graduated from at the time. Now Mitya teaches high school mathematics there.”

The director, priest Andrey Posternak, is speaking. On the right is the confessor of the gymnasium, Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov.

Mitya Artamkin:“Of course, with the advent of the school, our life will somehow change. But I can't say that I'm very worried. If problems arise, we will solve them as they come up.

Varya Artamkina:“I think that our life will change a lot with the advent of the school. Now we spend all the time together, walk, study. And soon we will have to go to bed early and get up early, our whole regimen will change, we will spend half a day separately. I miss my daughters very much, even when they leave for classes. It seems that there is free time, but I really miss their presence. I think school is a very serious stage in our common life.

The girls were not at all worried before school, rather, on the contrary, they counted the days remaining until September 1. And I'm very worried. The good news is that the daughters will study in the same class and will be able to support each other. How scary it must be for a child who goes to school alone for the first time, without the support of brothers and sisters!

On January 10, 1974, Sue Rosenkowitz gave birth to six twins in Cape Town, and for the first time all of the newborns survived.

But this, as they say, is not the limit. A greater number of twins have been born and are being born in the world. What is the largest number of children born at the same time?

gears

In October 2008, 31-year-old Digna Carpio from New York gave birth to six twins - four boys and two girls. The weight of babies at birth ranged from 0.68 to 0.9 kilograms. The happy mother and her husband, 36-year-old Victor, already had a seven-year-old son at that time.

The birth of six twins is an extremely rare occurrence, occurring in one in 4.4 million people. Only once before in New York were born six babies at once. It happened in 1997.

In October 2010, in the Italian city of Benevento, near Naples, 30-year-old Carmela Oliva had six children - four girls and two boys. In Italy, this was the first such case in the last 14 years.

To help the babies be born, doctors were forced to resort to a caesarean section. Children were born with low weight - from 600 to 800 grams. According to doctors, this phenomenon is not associated with artificial insemination, but with the treatment that the mother underwent - the fact is that Italian laws prohibit transplanting more than three embryos.

Setuples

Bobbie McCaughey (USA) gave birth to 7 children on November 19, 1997. They weighed between 1048 and 1474 grams and were born at 31 weeks pregnant within 16 minutes by caesarean section.

7 twins were born 8 weeks prematurely - on January 14, 1998 - to 40-year-old Hasna Mohammed Humair (Saudi Arabia). Among them, 4 boys and 3 girls, the smallest weighed 907 grams.

In August 2008, in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, the 27-year-old wife of a local farmer, Ghazalu Khamis, gave birth to seven twins at once! As it turned out, the Egyptian dreamed of giving her husband a son and was taking pregnancy-stimulating drugs. The result is four sons and three daughters.

Ghazala Khamis was placed under observation two months before the birth: the development of twins in the womb did not cause concern - the doctors were only worried about the increasing pressure on the kidneys. After a caesarean section, the woman in labor also underwent a blood transfusion. But all the crumbs were born healthy and quite large - from 1.4 to 2.8 kg, which in itself is a mystery of nature.

Eights

On January 26, 2009, 33-year-old Nadi Suleman gave birth to eight twins, all of whom were healthy.

The mother of the newborn eight then lived with her other children and parents in the suburbs of Los Angeles - in the small town of Whittier. The family already grew up six kids aged two to seven years, among whom there is a pair of twins.

The children's grandmother left her job and devoted herself entirely to her daughter's family. And grandfather, to help Nadia, went to Iraq to work under a contract. Nadia herself claimed that she decided to take this step because of her own childhood, in which she missed her brothers and sisters so much. In addition, the eccentric American said that she was following the example of her idol, the large Angelina Jolie. A few years ago, Suleman even had plastic surgery to look like an actress.

Eight was conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Doctors in such cases insist on the reduction (removal) of a part of the embryos. After all, such a number of them can adversely affect both the health of the mother and the health of future children.

But the Californian, with the support of her large family, refused to reduce. A single mother divorced her husband a long time ago precisely because they could not have children together.

The delivery by caesarean section was nine weeks ahead of schedule. A team of 46 doctors who took birth was expecting the birth of seven babies, which, although not often, does happen. However, there were eight newborns - six boys and two girls - and they are all quite healthy. The weight of babies is from 700 g to 1.9 kg. Seven of them immediately breathed on their own and were bottle fed. The whole family was discharged from the maternity hospital home in just a week.

From 10 and more

There is information about the birth of ten twins at once. Such cases were recorded in Spain in 1924, in China in 1936 and in Brazil in 1946. But this is not the limit.

Eleven children at once - this is the largest number of twins, information about which is known. The first birth of 11 twins occurred on May 29, 1971 in the USA, in the city of Philadelphia. The second - in 1977 in Bangladesh, in the city of Bagarhat. In both cases, none of the children, unfortunately, survived.

Besides

The largest number of children born to one mother

The largest number of children born to one mother, according to official figures, is 69. According to reports made in 1782, between 1725 and 1765. The wife of a Russian peasant Fyodor Vasiliev gave birth 27 times, giving birth to twins 16 times, triplets 7 times and 4 twins 4 times. Of these, only 2 children died in infancy.

Of our contemporaries, the most prolific mother is Leontina Albina of San Antonio, Chile, who gave birth to 55 children between 1943-81. As a result of the first 5 pregnancies, she gave birth to triplets, and exclusively male.

The woman who gave birth the most times

The record 38 births are said to have been given to Elizabeth Greenhill of Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, UK. She had 39 children - 32 daughters and 7 sons - and died in 1681.

The largest father

The largest father in history is the Russian peasant of the village of Vvedensky Yakov Kirillov, who in 1755 was presented to the court in connection with this (he was then 60 years old). The first wife of a peasant gave birth to 57 children: 4 times four, 7 times three, 9 times two, and 2 times one. The second wife gave birth to 15 children. Thus, Yakov Kirillov had 72 children from two wives.
