How to remove the valve cover?

The valve cover is a part that often has to be removed, especially when it comes to a car of the domestic auto industry. So, for example, if we talk about the VAZ-2106, the valve cover is removed when adjusting the valves, and when controlling the timing tension, and when dismantling the engine, and when replacing gaskets, and for many other tasks.

Of course, everyone should be able to perform this procedure on their own. Fortunately, it is quite simple to perform and takes about half an hour, so it is not even advisable to go to the salon to carry it out. Let's figure out how to remove the valve cover in order to replace this or that part, using the example of the VAZ-2106.

Preparation

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare a number of tools with the help of which the work will be carried out as easily and quickly as possible:

  • heads 8 and 10;
  • extension;
  • ratchet;
  • pliers.

Removing the cover

To work without interference with the valve cover, the first step is to dismantle the air filter.

Removing the filter

  1. We unscrew the three nuts securing the filter cover and remove it, as well as the filter itself.
  2. We unscrew the four nuts securing the filter housing to the carburetor.
  3. Disconnect the hose from the air intake breather and remove the filter housing.
  4. Disconnect the carburetor flap drive rod (if there is a retaining ring, you must first remove it).
  5. Disconnect the choke cable by slightly loosening the nut of its fastening.

Now we can calmly tackle the lid.

Removing the cover

  1. We unscrew the eight nuts securing the cover - the most convenient way to do this is using a ratchet with an extension and a head for 10.
  2. We swing the lid a little and start removing it. The lid comes out at a certain angle and needs to be caught. If you feel that the cover does not stretch at any angle, check to see if you unscrewed all the nuts. Remember, you must use force when removing the cover, but you do not need to pull it.

When the valve cover is removed, you can proceed with the necessary repair procedures. If you have to change the gasket, be sure to thoroughly clean the traces of the old one before fixing the new one, you can even use a special tool for this. Also, remember to put the new gasket on the dry case.

To reinstall the valve cover, reverse the removal procedures.

Probably the most common disease of all front-wheel drive 8-valve VAZ cars, including 2110-2112, is oil leakage from under the valve covers. Moreover, this problem occurs both in the old eights of the 90s and in modern Kalin. And in order to eliminate this defect, it is necessary to replace the gasket. But the ideal option, of course, would be to plant it on a sealant.

So, to do this simple job, we need a minimum of a tool:

  1. 10 mm head
  2. Ratchet handle
  3. Phillips screwdriver

How to remove the valve cover and replace the gasket on a VAZ 2110-2112 8-cl.

So, first of all, you need to open the hood of the car and, using a 10 head, unscrew the two bolts securing the throttle cable strip, as is clearly shown in the photo below.

Take it to the side and fix it so that it does not interfere with us in the future.

Then, using a Phillips screwdriver, we unscrew all the screws of the clamp of the clamps on the hoses that fit the valve cover. In the photo below, they are all marked with arrows:

And remove all three pipes:

And only after that, carefully remove the valve cover, lifting it up without sudden movements.

Now for the replacement of the gasket. It is installed in the groove of the cover from the inside. We pry it with our fingers or a thin object, and take it out. This procedure is clearly shown in the picture below.

After that, we wipe dry the surface of the cylinder head and the groove of the cover, install a new gasket and you can put everything in place.

If you want there to be no oil leaks after a few hundred kilometers, be sure to put the cover on a sealant. It is better to first apply it to the surface of the head, in the so-called junction with the lid.

Also, you should pay attention to the integrity of the rubber bands under the cover fastening nuts:

Typically, these rubber bands are sold immediately complete with a gasket. The price of such a kit is about 120 rubles for a VAZ 2110-2112 with 8-valve engines. After installation, we connect everything in place.

Engine oil leakage can be controlled by increasing the sealing of the system. In many cases, one of the most effective methods is to replace the valve cover gasket.

You should not leave this problem for a long time without a solution, since a decrease in the oil level can lead to disastrous consequences. Also, the block of cylinders will be in drips due to poor sealing, which will lead to a sloppy look.

Before changing the valve cover gasket, you must purchase a quality replacement for the worn part. You should not save in such a situation and buy a cheap fake or make a purchase of low quality in a dubious place.

All work on installation / dismantling may be useless, and it will need to be carried out literally after a couple of thousand kilometers of run again. This will require another engine wash and maintenance costs.

In the engine compartment, even a novice driver will be able to notice the valve cover, since some automakers put them painted in bright colors. This element ensures the closure of the gas distribution mechanism. There is a gasket between the cover and the body.

The rubberized material retains its properties for a long time when working with significant temperature differences and aggressive chemical environment. Over the entire surface, the valve cover gasket is bolted to the body through the cover itself.

The need for replacement

Depending on the working conditions, after 10-15 thousand km of run, it loses its elastic properties and needs to be replaced. The procedure is straightforward and rarely takes more than an hour from an experienced driver.

If you identify indirect or direct signs, it is worth stopping by the nearest car dealership and stocking up on a new gasket. These signs include:

  • the presence of oil traces on the outside of the cover;
  • mandatory during major or current engine repairs;
  • during the repair of the timing belt, and sometimes when changing the engine oil;
  • during diagnostic work with a motor.

For replacement, garage conditions and a repair kit are suitable. You will also need wrenches and a screwdriver. The best adhesion to the surface is ensured by using a sealant. You must also use a solvent to degrease the mating surfaces.

Replacement procedure

To replace the valve cover gasket, you will need to dismantle the air cleaner, loosen all the bolts around the perimeter. It is advisable to do this in a checkerboard pattern so as not to create additional stress on the remaining fasteners.

After removing the old gasket, sometimes you need to clean the surface from the remnants of the stuck material. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the body part.

You need to know that even a good externally gasket should not be reused, since it loses its elasticity and will not provide high-quality isolation of the working area from the external environment.

Step 1. Remove the cover Step 2. Putting the gasket

Before installing a new gasket, the contacting surfaces are cleaned and degreased. Apply a sufficient amount of sealant to both clean, dry sides. The assembly of the structure is carried out in the reverse order of disassembly. The bolts are also pre-tightened in a staggered manner, and then brought to maximum force.

Not in all cases, motorists manage to carry out the procedure without problems. Sometimes an oil leak is formed almost immediately after several kilometers. The most popular reasons for this may be several:

  • use of low quality gaskets;
  • insufficient amount of sealant used, inaccurate application of it to the surface;
  • cover skew caused by improper tightening of the fasteners.

You need to know that for cars there are schemes for tightening the bolts on the covers, which can be found in the car's operating instructions.

It is necessary to carry out replacement on a cooled engine so that thermal expansion does not negatively affect the result of work.

To work with fasteners, you usually need a 10 wrench. After unscrewing all the bolts, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the parts from the remaining grease or old sealant.

Application of sealant

It is advisable to tighten the bolts with a torque wrench. If there is no scheme according to which the operation is carried out, then it can be found on the official website of the manufacturer. In any case, tightening the fasteners is carried out from the middle to the edges.

The preload on the torque wrench should be about 5 Nm, and on final tightening it doubles to 10 Nm. Only then can engine oil be topped up.

Torque wrench

The gasket is not put on the entire surface at the same time, but first one side is leaning, and then the middle is lowered, lastly the second side is put so that the sealant is evenly distributed over the surface. Its layer should be about 2-3 mm on each side.

You need to know that the remains of pieces from the old gasket are not allowed on the body, as they will reduce the tightness of the structure.

The approximate time for complete curing of the sealant is about 10-12 hours. The vehicle can then be used normally.

Surely, many have encountered a problem when oil begins to ooze under the valve cover. In this case, a mandatory replacement of the valve cover gasket is required.
As a rule, this happens after a certain mileage of the vehicle. To prevent such a problem, the gasket must be replaced in a timely manner.
The process itself, called replacing the valve cover gasket of a VAZ 2110, is not so difficult, but it is not feasible without some knowledge and skills.

pad

In fact, the valve cover gasket is an insignificant element, it does not affect the performance of the motor or other technical parameters. But if this gasket starts to leak, you need to prepare for some trouble.
The main sign of caring for your car is a clean and dry engine, which also affects the condition of various gaskets, seals and oil seals.

Note! A good gasket under the valve cover is the key to a clean and well-groomed engine.

The valve cover immediately catches your eye when you open the hood of the car. Most car enthusiasts paint this accessory and the air cleaner housing in bright colors.
So:

  • The cover is designed to cover the gas distribution mechanism, it has a neck for. This neck is attached to the cover itself with a few bolts.
    There must be a special gasket between these parts.

Note! The gasket is made of a special compound based on rubber. In this case, all properties are retained when exposed to high or low temperatures.
In addition, the composition does not interact with engine oil.

Sooner or later, the pad loses its elasticity and becomes hard. Later, microcracks form, through which oil seeps.
Even due to minimal leaks, the motor quickly becomes covered with dirt, which is difficult to clean.

When a replacement is needed

Perhaps many are interested in the question of how often the valve gasket should be replaced. It is worth noting that such a procedure should be a familiar thing for the driver, especially when the car is actively used.
Replacing the valve cover gasket VAZ 2110 should be performed in such cases:

  • if traces of oil appear outside along the line of connection of the cover with the head of the block;
  • in the process of current or overhaul of the engine;
  • when removing the head cover for technical inspection or for repairing the timing belt.
  • Some drivers change the gasket under the cover constantly when changing the engine oil. There is a rational explanation for this. Oil leakage will be completely eliminated. When opening the cover, the driver inspects the timing parts for wear or damage.

In many cases, the gasket is changed in a garage environment. You can quickly change the gasket on your own, for this you only need a desire and a set of simple tools.
In addition, you need to acquire consumables. Such materials include a new gasket, a good engine high-temperature sealant and a degreaser (this can be gasoline, thinner or anti-silicone).

Replacement process

It is very easy to remove the old gasket.
Let's get started:

  • For this, the air cleaner body is removed, and the fastening bolts are unscrewed along the entire perimeter.

Note. When burdening the cover with additional devices, for example, attachments, they can also be dismantled. Discard the old gasket immediately.

  • The points of contact between the cylinder head and the cover are cleaned of worn sealant and then degreased.
  • The gasket is lubricated on both sides with a sealant, put in place and covered with a lid.

All parts must be assembled in the reverse order.
This video will help you do everything correctly.

Errors after replacing the gasket

Of course, the process of replacing the gasket is not always perfect, and some common mistakes can be made. Despite the fact that this is a simple procedure, many car owners may face certain difficulties.
For example, after installing a new gasket, oil may still leak.
Replacement errors can vary, but the most common are:

  • the use of low quality gaskets;
  • uneven application or application of old sealant;
  • incorrect tightening of the bolts, as a result, the cover may be skewed.

Attention: Before starting work, you need to find a diagram for tightening the cover fasteners, it is in the car's manual. Thus, everything must be done on the basis of this scheme.
The dynamic wrench will help control the tightening force. For a comfortable and convenient work, you need to prepare the following tool:

  • box or socket wrenches;
  • torque wrench;
  • some turpentine;
  • universal screwdriver;
  • automotive sealant;
  • new gasket.

Note! It is better to carry out the operation on a cold engine, which is much more convenient.

In order to avoid mistakes when replacing the gasket, it is recommended to adhere to certain instructions:

  • First, unscrew the mounting bolts from the valve cover. For these actions you need a key for "10".
    The unscrewed bolts are completely removed. The corner of the valve cover is carefully poked out with a screwdriver. The cover is lifted and dismantled.
  • All edges of the part are thoroughly cleaned of oil. In this case, you can use turpentine, which is sold at the pharmacy. In addition, the old sealant is removed.
  • The tightening of the block head bolts is rechecked, especially when it comes to overhaul repairs for a relatively long time. If necessary, tighten them to the correct torques and in the correct sequence as indicated in the machine manual.
    If there is no manual for some reason, the information can be read on the Internet.
  • The lid is thoroughly rinsed; the same turpentine is suitable for this. More attention should be paid to the oil separator.
  • The old gasket is dismantled. Perhaps it will burst into pieces. With the help of turpentine, rinse the groove under it.
  • A new gasket is inserted into the corresponding groove, after which sealant is applied to the cylinder head and cover.
  • To make the installation of the cover as convenient as possible, it is better to remove the timing case.
  • Now you can install the lid, you need to keep it level and lower it slowly. The holes for the candles are centered so that they are clearly aligned.
  • Bolt tightening should start at the center and end with bolts farther away. The tightening sequence can be found in the manual.
    As a rule, the first tightening should be 5 Nm and the second 10 Nm.
  • After that, oil is added to the engine and a test run is performed. At the final stage, you can assess how well the work was performed by trying the gasket for leaks.

Of course, it is difficult for an inexperienced master to change the gasket only in theory, it is advisable to watch a training video, but if there is no other way out, you have to limit yourself to useful tips that will save a lot of time on repair work.

  • First you need to find out the true cause of the malfunction. This is perhaps the most difficult task, as one defective part of the machine can cause other parts to malfunction.
    For example, a close inspection can determine that valve gasket wear is causing the increase.
  • After that, you need to decide what spare parts you need to acquire. As practice shows, when changing the valve cover gasket, you need to remove the EGR pipe (this is the name of the exhaust gas circulation system).
    If there is no certain experience, not everyone will be able to remove it without damage, so you need to buy at least one spare tube. Ideally, it's best to buy two just in case.

Note! It should be understood that each case is individual, so you should not completely trust the advice of friends. That is why there is an instruction to read it, and not neglect it.

It is recommended to purchase only original gaskets. This point is also neglected by many drivers and locksmiths, believing that there is no difference between rubber products.
Even if everything is done correctly and accurately, a poor-quality gasket cannot guarantee a good result. Practice shows that most of the problems arise from the use of "non-native" auto parts.
There is no need to save on little things, since it is the little things that play an important role. You also need to pay attention to the sealant, namely, its correct use.
Not many people know that improper use of a sealant can negate all the efforts previously spent. So, in order for the repair to be completed safely, the composition must set well, and this will take about 10-12 hours.

Note! There is no need to rush, if you want to save an extra hour, you will have to spend 3-4 hours of your time on a full replacement of the gasket.

That's all. After the gasket is replaced with your own hands, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
If you do everything as the instruction advises, no difficulties should arise. The price of a gasket sold in stores is not that high, so the entire replacement process does not cause any special costs.

Oil leakage from under the valve cover is a fairly common failure in many engine models. In most cases it is necessary to replace the valve cover gasket. The procedure is simple, but there are several nuances that should be studied before starting the repair.

When to change?

The frequency of replacement depends on the specific car model and the mode of operation. The Chevrolet Lacetti, for example, has a chronic illness. The factory valve cover gasket can withstand from 40 to 100 thousand kilometers, but after the first replacement, this unit will have to be repaired more often. For many car owners, this becomes a forced annual ritual.

On some engines, the valve cover gasket may allow very little oil to pass through ("sweat"), and this can last for years. It is better not to touch this option. If the leak has become noticeable (drips on the engine, oil spots under the car), then do not tighten the replacement.

One hundred percent sign of the need to replace the gasket is when oil begins to completely fill the spark plug wells, which leads to unstable engine operation. You can, of course, soak the oil with a rag, but you will quickly get tired of this procedure, and it is not at all useful for the engine to work.

In cases where the engine or the gas distribution mechanism was repaired, replacing the valve cover gasket is required. Even if the old one did not leak.

Can I change it myself?

If desired, every driver can handle the replacement procedure. The valve cover gasket is removed quite easily. It is enough to disconnect all the pipes that fit the lid. Then unscrew all fastening bolts. This will give you access to the gasket, which must be removed and discarded. Before starting work, it is recommended to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid accidental short circuits.

The reverse order is a little more complicated. It is necessary to thoroughly clean the "seat" of the old sealant and dirt. The cover must also be cleaned and degreased (in the places of contact with the gasket). Now you can install a new spare part. To avoid damaging the valve cover gasket during assembly, you will need information on the correct tightening pattern. The quickest way to find out is the user manual.

An important factor is the tightening torque, which must be adjusted with a torque wrench. But since such a tool is not always possible to find, many trust their own feelings. The main thing is without fanaticism.

Possible complications

If after replacing the gasket, the problem of oil leakage remains, then there may be several reasons. The most common is the use of low-quality gaskets. Good gaskets are made from a special compound that is resistant to temperature extremes and the effects of oil and gasoline. The VAZ valve cover gasket is inexpensive, but for foreign cars the situation is completely different. Therefore, many car owners purchase gaskets of dubious origin in an attempt to save money. Most often this leads to the opposite effect. As a result, you have to repeat the repair procedure and buy a better quality spare part.

Sometimes replacing the gasket does not help due to the deformation of the valve cover. Its replacement will cost significantly more. Although the repair procedure and procedure are the same. On some engine models (for example, 1.8 and 2.0 liters for the Peugeot 407), the gasket is not supplied separately. It comes assembled with a valve cover and only in the original, which is quite expensive (using a variety of sealants does not help). This feature is useful to know before buying.

One of the most common mistakes when replacing a gasket is neglecting the design and tightening the bolts. In this case, a distortion occurs, which leads to leakage and deformation of the valve cover.

Outcome

Replacing is easy, but before starting work, you should arm yourself with knowledge and a torque wrench. The main points that you need to know: the degree and scheme of tightening, whether it is necessary to use a sealant (and what type), whether additional rubber rings for bolts are needed. The first time there may be a hitch, but the second procedure will take no more than an hour. Happy renovation!
