Mazda CX-9 was introduced in 2006 and sales started in 2007. The crossover was assembled in Japan and supplied to the markets of Russia, USA, South America, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine.

The car is built on the CD3 platform, which formed the basis of the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6 and Ford Edge. During production, the model has gone through two restyling: in 2010 and in 2013. Sales of the new generation CX-9 started in 2016.

Engines

Both units were developed by Ford and belonged to the Cyclone series. The 3.5-liter was used in the Ford Edge and Explorer, while the 3.7-liter was used in the Ford Mustang and F-150.

The engines for the CX-9 were assembled at the Mazda engine plant in Japan. They have a chain-type timing drive.

After 100-150 thousand km, the rear engine support sometimes surrenders. Over time, the starter can also get depressed. As a rule, it is possible to get rid of the cleaning and lubrication of the moving gear (about 4,000 rubles).

After 150,000 km, the pump may leak. The problem is that it is driven through the timing chain. And it is almost impossible to dismantle it without removing the engine. The cost of a new water pump is about 5,000 rubles. For everything you will have to pay almost 50,000 rubles.

It is not worth pulling with the replacement of the water pump. Presumably, it was because of the pump on individual copies that after 150,000 km a major overhaul of the engine was needed. Overheating, destruction of pistons and cranking of liners has occurred. It took about 150,000 rubles to restore the motor.

Transmission

The engines were combined exclusively with the 6-speed automatic Aisin TF-81SC. The box is considered eternal, provided that the oil is changed regularly - every 60,000 km. Repairs (40-60 thousand rubles) are not numerous and occur only after 200,000 km. Solenoids, valve body or torque converter demanded attention.

The all-wheel drive system posed a number of problems. For example, an electromagnetic clutch failed due to a broken wiring. To restore it, it was necessary to remove and disassemble the rear differential (about 12,000 rubles). In some cases, thanks to the ingenuity of the mechanic, it was possible to do without disassembling the unit (3,000 rubles).

Much more serious questions are related to the transfer case. The unit does not have a drain plug. Apparently, the engineers hoped that the oil resource would last for a long time. However, the transfer case is located close to the exhaust manifold. As a result, the oil overheats and rather quickly loses its lubricating properties, turning into tar. The result is sad - premature wear of the assembly. The cost of the original handout is 100,000 rubles.

One of the harbingers of trouble is a leaking front right-hand drive oil seal. The thickened grease clogs the breather and the bearing lubrication channels.

This miscalculation, coupled with corrosion, contributed to another ailment - the destruction of the splines on the shaft connecting the transfer case and the automatic transmission differential (12,000 rubles).

After a while, it may be necessary to replace the outboard bearing of the propeller shaft - 2-5 thousand rubles. In addition, the silent blocks of the rear differential wear out: two on the bracket and two pressed into the beam (2,000 rubles each).

Only the front-wheel drive versions, which were offered exclusively in the North American market, were spared from transmission problems.

Undercarriage

The branded suspension settings tend to be more sporty. The big guy is surprisingly good on twisty roads. But the price to pay for obedience is smoothness. However, the agility of the CX-9 is inferior to the smaller Mazda CX-7.

MacPherson struts are installed on the front axle, and a multi-link design on the rear. The weak link of the front suspension is the support, which, at times, wear out after 20-50 thousand km. As a result, there is a creak and knock. The cost of the original part is about 2,000 rubles, the analogue part is 1,000 rubles.

The steering rack can rattle after 100,000 km. You will need a repair kit (3,000 rubles) and good service, which will ask for about 8,000 rubles. In extreme cases, you will have to purchase a new rail - 46,000 rubles.

Rear wheel bearings will last up to 100-150 thousand km. They change assembled with a hub - 11,000 rubles for the original and 6,000 rubles for an analogue. Soon it will be the turn of the shock absorbers - more often the front ones. Shock absorbers are available for 6-7 thousand rubles. Often, the rear springs also sag - 16,000 rubles.

It is worth noting that in 2015, Mazda organized a recall campaign for the CX-9 2007-2014 model year to replace the front levers due to corrosion and destruction of the ball joints. This review did not affect our country. You will have to pay for the lever - 15,000 rubles.

Unfortunately, there are also problems with the brake system - the vacuum brake booster fails. The cost of the new amplifier is 12,000 rubles, and the replacement work is about 3,000 rubles.

Other problems and malfunctions

Over time, the steering wheel cover is erased in the cabin, and numerous scratches are found on the "silver" decorative linings. Some owners, with high mileage, note the appearance of a backlash in the driver's seat. Repairs are very expensive - the seat frame needs to be replaced.

Sometimes the tailgate electric drive fails. Water through the leaky corrugation of the wiring enters the servo motor and control board.

The heater motor may also require replacement. The cost of a new original unit is 20,000 rubles. Fortunately, you can buy an analog - about 5,000 rubles.

Traces of corrosion, as a rule, can be found only on the tailgate - near the chrome trim. It does not differ in durability and chrome on the exterior elements.

What we liked: the design is beyond praise, interior 4+ (poor ergonomics with good design and materials), 4 running properties (smooth running, minimal roll, excellent dynamics and zero cross-country ability).

What I didn’t like at all: as stated above - ergonomics. The controls are badly located. Not only is the light control on the turn signal arm, but the steering wheel rim completely covers the switch. As a result, it is impossible to switch the mode without diverting attention from the road. Fortunately, there is a full-fledged auto mode. Further - the climate control is closed by the automatic transmission mode switch lever, moreover, in the automatic mode, the climate blows in the legs ... Why ?!

The seats behind the front passenger are significantly less than behind the driver (I adjusted both seats for myself). To sit in the front more or less comfortably (without resting your knees in the glove compartment), the passenger seat will be shifted back more than the driver's.

Horse turning radius - the first time I did not enter the parking lot at the Festival, I had to move back. Today, the consumption in busy Moscow is 17.7 l / 100 km.

For a complete set I will say this - not bad. Although not everything you want is there. The electric settings of the front seats with the driver's memory are good. The headlights are diode, cool, but the running lights are halogens. It's kind of weird.
