In May 2016, the DOU was held about the universities where IT specialists study or studied. Such surveys were also conducted, but this year we decided to make the assessment more complete and comprehensive.
How we thought
To build the rating, an assessment of readiness to recommend one's faculty or department as a place of study was chosen. We used this indicator because it depends less on the subjective life circumstances of the respondent (for example, nostalgia for youth or dissatisfaction with insufficient efforts made during education). In addition, since the recommendation is made “for the future”, the respondent can take into account not only his personal experience of studying, but also any information about the university received after graduation - this way we get a more objective assessment.
results
The lowest scores were (5.7) and (4.7).
The rest of the universities received average marks - no higher and no lower than the average level for the sample.
Interestingly, general universities are leading in the ranking (with the exception of KNURE). While specialized technical universities such as KPI, Lviv Polytechnic, ONPU, KhAI, KhPI, DonNTU received average marks, and VNTU and NAU even below average.
In addition to universities with high marks, there are several individual highly rated faculties in secondary universities.
This is the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (score 7.3), as well as several faculties: the Institute of Physics and Technology (PTI) - 7.4 points, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (FPM) - 7.3 points, the Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IPSA) - 7.0 points.
KPI, being the largest university for IT education (a quarter of the respondents study or studied at this university), received average marks. The main reason is the spread in the assessments of different faculties. In contrast to the above-mentioned stronger faculties (PTI, FPM, IPSA), the study also analyzed FIVT, TEF and FEL, which received average marks ().
To view data for all universities, use the widget below or a table with all the data. The complete dataset can be downloaded from GitHub.
in green values above the average for the entire sample are highlighted, orange below the average for the entire sample. The values in cells without filling do not differ from the average for the sample (90% significance level).
Cells with numbers show the average score on a scale from 1 to 10, with % - the share of all respondents of a particular university / faculty.
General assessment: willingness to recommend the department / faculty The prestige of the faculty Organization of the educational process, the presence of bureaucracy, informing students Learning is hard Database Good explanations, clear presentation Technical condition of the premises Group / flow: level of knowledge, motivation Involvement and support of students in research activities Financial efficiency (raising and distributing funds) Faced with bribes personally IT specialists acted as guest lecturers Fairly active cooperation with IT companies in the field of employment Would not change the place of study |

Ukrainian IT education: you can write off and give bribes, but it is prestigious
Estimates of various learning parameters range from 5 to 6 on a 10-point scale, rarely exceeding 6 points. The prestige of the faculty was rated as highly as possible - 6.5 on average for all universities.
Respondents report a rather loyal attitude towards cheating and plagiarism - this item received a score of 5.0 out of 10 (where 10 means "it is very difficult to copy or hand over someone else's work").
The level of corruption is also quite high: as we have already seen, 39% of respondents personally encountered cases of bribery.
Top A/O challenges for IT: weak alumni community, outdated knowledge and financial inefficiency
It is these parameters of the work of universities that were rated the lowest.
- community of graduates (assistance to the university, the presence of "common values") - 4.0;
- the relevance of the knowledge provided for working in IT - 4.1;
- financial efficiency of the university (optimality of attracting and distributing resources) - 4.2.
The irrelevance of knowledge is also reflected in the assessments of the work of teachers. If the clarity of explanations and the presentation of the material are rated at an average of 6.1, then the practical experience of application and the ability to explain how to apply knowledge in practice are rated worse - at 5.2.
Of the technologies listed in the questionnaire, databases are most often taught in universities (81% of respondents studied), C ++ (74%) and C (60%). Java was studied at the university by 44% of respondents, JavaScript - by 30%, QA - by 15%.
Glimmer of hope: cooperation between universities and IT companies
Despite the low assessments of the relevance and usefulness of knowledge, cooperation between universities and IT companies gives hope for the best, in particular, attracting IT specialists to teaching and joint events in order to employ students.
37% of respondents noted that their faculty attracted practitioners from the IT field to teach - however, 30% believe that this should have been done more often.
In addition to attracting IT specialists to teaching, faculties cooperate with IT companies in other ways: 38% of respondents noted that IT specialists acted as guest lecturers at their faculties, 29% - that IT companies helped faculties with technical support.
32% of respondents believe that their university is quite actively cooperating with IT companies in the field of employment.

In many respects, the university received above average marks, but the image of the university was rated average, and the complexity of education was below average. At the same time, the relevance of knowledge is rated above average, possibly due to the involvement of IT specialists in teaching and cooperation with IT companies in the field of employment.
The work of the administration, the clarity of the presentation of the material by teachers, and technical support were well appreciated. A fairly high level of student involvement in scientific activities. The university also received high financial performance scores, with a relatively low level of corruption (19% personally experienced bribes compared to 39% in the sample as a whole).

The level of corruption in the university is below average: 29% have personally encountered bribes (vs. 39% in the sample as a whole).
DNU them. Potter
The university as a whole received average marks, however, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (about half of the respondents from DNU) received high marks for willingness to recommend it as a place of study (7.3 out of 10).
According to most indicators, the faculty is rated medium, so the high level of willingness to recommend is apparently due to the prestige of the faculty and the complexity of education.
At the same time, the technical support and financial efficiency of both the faculty and the university as a whole are rated below average.
Lviv Polytechnic
University grades are average. The work of the administration, namely the orientation towards the interests of students, is rated lower - this is mainly the "fault" of the Institute of Computer Technologies, Automation and Metrology.
The Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology received higher ratings - it is considered more prestigious, technological opportunities for learning, attracting IT specialists to teaching and cooperation with IT companies, including employment assistance, are appreciated higher. At the Institute of Computer Technologies, Automation and Metrology, all these items are rated at an average or below average level.
The level of corruption in these two faculties and in general in Lviv Polytechnic is above average (57% of respondents faced bribes personally vs 39% of the general sample).
ONPU
In the study ONPU is represented mainly by the Institute of Computer Systems.
Estimates of both the faculty and the university are mostly average. Everything related to technical support is rated below: the condition of the premises, technological opportunities for training, access to educational materials.
In addition, the financial performance of the university is rated below average, but the level of corruption is higher (54% of respondents from this university have personally encountered bribes vs. 39% on average in the sample).

NTUU "KPI"
As a whole, KPI grades as a university are average, but the situation may differ in different faculties. The strengths of KPI as a university as a whole are the prestige, the complexity of training and a strong community of students and alumni. Among the minuses are the work of the administration and teachers, technical support and financial efficiency. The level of corruption in the university is below average.
There are three faculties of KPI that are highly rated: the Institute of Physics and Technology (PTI), the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (FPM) and the Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IPSA).
They were rated above average in terms of readiness to recommend, and in many ways these faculties are similar to each other: for example, they are rated as prestigious, difficult to learn, and providing knowledge and professional connections that are relevant and useful for working in IT. The level of corruption in these faculties is below average.
At the same time, respondents from FTI more often consider their studies interesting and give a higher rating to the work of the administration, namely, the orientation towards the interests of students.
If we talk about teachers, then respondents with IPSA give a higher rating to the quality of explanations and presentation of material, and respondents with FTI- practical experience and ability to explain the application of knowledge in practice. In addition, on FTI higher level of student involvement in research activities.
On the FTI and IPSA also stricter attitudes towards cheating and plagiarism, better access to educational materials, higher marks from the alumni community, these departments are more likely to involve IT specialists in teaching (for FPM scores of all these items do not differ from the average).
At the same time, estimates of employment assistance for all three faculties are almost the same and do not differ from the sample averages.
In addition to these three faculties, the study also singled out the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering (FIVT), the Faculty of Thermal Power Engineering (TEF) and the Faculty of Electronics (FEL).
At FIFT good marks of image and complexity of training. The level of corruption at the FIHT is below average (27% vs 39% on average for the sample), the faculty is quite actively cooperating with IT companies in the field of employment. At TEF and FEL low marks for the image and organization of the educational process (including bureaucracy), as well as technical support. FEL students also rate below average the relevance and usefulness of the acquired knowledge for working in IT, they are less likely to involve IT specialists in teaching and cooperate less with IT companies in the field of employment. This is slightly better at TEF: the grades are average, and the list of technologies studied is wider - but on the other hand, the level of student involvement in scientific and technical activities is lower and the level of corruption is higher.
