We tested the Sony PlayStation 4 console (CUH-1008A kit). Recommended retail price -

Design

The February launch of the PlayStation 4 came as a surprise to everyone, including Sony's main competitors. And if everything became more or less clear with the hardware and characteristics, then one intriguing question remained: what does the console itself look like? After all, at the presentation they did not show the appearance of the PS4, and one could only guess what the coveted box would look like when it hit the shelves.

However, the presentation at E3 answered that question. PlayStation 4 is a minimalistic and technologically advanced "obelisk" made of black plastic. In this regard, it resembles the very first iteration of the PlayStation 2. However, the presence of glossy plastic on one half of the console will inevitably lead to scratches or scuffs during active use. Horizontal or vertical installation is supported, but the set-top box looks serious and Japanese stylish in both cases.

The quirky combination of edges and slopes immediately sets the PS4 apart from most home devices.

What is also important, the design is functional. The physical dimensions of the PlayStation 4 are noticeably more modest than its main competitor, the Xbox One. Moreover, the power supply is built into the body of the set-top box, and nothing superfluous hangs out from the outside. After all, the rather big Xbox One is loaded with an external power supply unit of "brick" form factor ... However, if from the point of view of design everything is quite subjective, then in terms of the layout of the case and internal components Sony showed an excellent example. In fact, all the filling is cleverly packaged inside the console.

During our testing, the console did not get too hot, and the left half, covered with glossy plastic, remained cold at all. But the fan noise under load reaches high levels - somewhere between the PS3 "fat" and the first version of the PS3 Slim. That is, in a room environment, noise can be clearly distinguishable. Air is sucked into the cooling system through the ventilation grill on the sides of the attachment, and warm air is blown back. The pronounced horizontal "slot" around the perimeter of the case actually hides the air ducts and helps air circulation when the PS4 is mounted vertically.

Interfaces

If you remember the PlayStation 3, then the first version of the console was carefully crammed with all kinds of connectors. At first, there were even planned 2 HDMI video outputs and a 3-port network router, but later the unreal multimedia combine had to be simplified more than once ...

This time, Sony engineers turned out to be, um, more realistic in their dreams, which was reflected in the price and in the good start of sales of the device. The set-top box contains only digital inputs / outputs and only the most necessary ones.

Analog AV Multi Out and other legacy interfaces have been removed. As a result, you can only connect a set-top box via HDMI with mandatory HDCP support. That is, all modern HD TVs or monitors with HDMI fall under this condition. By the way, the HDMI cable comes with the set-top box - you don't have to buy it in addition.

The newly minted AUX port is designed to connect the PlayStation Camera accessory, which is offered as a separate option and costs 2,590 rubles. The webcam allows you to control the console interface, use voice control, or is interactively used in some games. It is worth noting that the set of Xbox One, the main competitor of PS4, contains an advanced Kinect sensor - but the price of the console is proportionally higher (by about $ 100). Not the fact that such a periphery is necessary for everyone. Perhaps Sony acted wisely, giving the buyer a choice - and at the same time managed to keep a lower and more attractive price for the set-top box.

Two USB ports at the front allow you to connect standard USB drives or gaming peripherals such as gamepads, headsets, and more. Currently, early versions of PS4 firmware have limited support for USB devices, many features will appear later.

Toslink SPDIF digital audio output allows you to connect the set-top box to various sound systems - for example, to a soundbar or receiver. But the main focus in terms of audio, as you might guess, falls back on HDMI. This is where the richest multi-channel audio formats are supported.

The Ethernet network port supports the gigabit standard, but many will prefer to use the high-speed Wi-Fi connection with support for 802.11n.

Hardware filling

Perhaps this is where the PS4 differs most from its predecessor. And it's not just about power! The entire architecture of the set-top box has become much simpler and more transparent. Cell's sophisticated asymmetric multi-core processor fell short of expectations, causing many problems for developers. Separated memory is also a thing of the past.

Next-generation set-top boxes have made a dramatic transition from the IBM PowerPC architecture to the standard x86 PC architecture with support for 64-bit instructions. Many developers have greeted such a solution with enthusiasm, because now you do not have to study hardware for a long time and look for non-trivial solutions to performance problems. At the same time, it is much easier to make multi-platform projects that are released on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Actually, it was the developers who pushed Sony to such a decision - at the very beginning of the development of the PS4, the company managed to ask the largest studios what they want to see on the next generation set-top box. Convenient architecture was almost at the top of the list.

It was also obvious that in set-top boxes it is most convenient to use unified memory without the usual division into RAM and video memory. Since the central processing unit (CPU) and the video chip (GPU) of the set-top box are combined on a single crystal (SoC), they use a single controller and memory access bus. Plus, Sony took the plunge and doubled the memory capacity at the very last moment - from 4GB to 8GB of high-speed GDDR5 (176GB / s). This design allows you to flexibly vary the amount of memory involved, and also eliminates bottlenecks in bandwidth. What you need for a console with a fixed hardware configuration.

The aforementioned single-chip system, which is the heart of the set-top box, is manufactured by AMD. It includes a 1.6GHz AMD Jaguar-based 8-core CPU and a modified AMD Radeon architecture. Unlike the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 GPU contains 18 GCN compute units, not 12. This gives some advantage in raw power, but Sony engineers also mention that additional units can be used for general purpose calculations (GPGPU).

In general, despite the fact that PS4 contains, in fact, mid-range PC hardware - it has a certain "margin of safety" for the future. Or "potential", if you like. In addition, the used AMD chips are initially aimed at the mobile market, therefore, they are optimized for low power consumption and heat dissipation. Considering the problems faced by the past generation of consoles (the early PS3 and Xbox 360 suffered from overheating and failed), the use of "mobile" iron can reduce heating and the risk of failure.

However, it remains to be seen what the reliability of the first PlayStation 4 series will be. At the moment, most of the failures are due to improper transportation of devices, when the consoles are damaged in transit.

The optical drive operates in constant rotation speed (CAV) and supports DVD and, of course, Blu-Ray - it is the "blue" discs that will become the main medium for PS4 games. A volume of up to 50 GB allows you to store an impressive amount of sources and videos in high quality. Plus, games are forcibly installed on a 500GB HDD to speed up loading times. But the initial installation has a reduced size - the game can be launched almost immediately, and further installation will take place in the background. Much more convenient than PlayStation 3.

In general, looking at the specifications of the PlayStation 4, we can make an unequivocal conclusion that this is the result of a huge amount of error correction carried out by Sony engineers. Almost all the flaws in the PS3 architecture, which caused difficulties, have been eliminated.

The new console, on the one hand, is quite powerful, on the other hand, it is the most convenient for developers. This will most likely affect the timing of the release of large projects (less delays, from which the previous generation often suffered), and the development cost. Iron, although not the most powerful, but direct access to it allows developers to squeeze out the maximum possibilities.

I am sure that in the coming years we will have very impressive and technological projects that will become a good "calling card" for the PlayStation 4 hardware. One of these games - Killzone: Shadow Fall - is available at the start of the console. And many multi-platform projects already look better on Sony PlayStation 4 than on their main competitor - Xbox One. Most games run in full 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) resolution and do not require framebuffer downgrade to achieve target performance of 30-60fps. Actually, this can be considered an indirect confirmation that Sony's bet on a more powerful GPU and high-speed GDDR5 memory in the PlayStation 4 has been fully justified. The hardware turned out to be elegant both in computational architecture and design.

Shell

The interface of the main menu has undergone significant changes. In fact, there is little in common with the PS3 - only minimalism and an interactive screensaver with an abstract 3D surface in the background. But the structure of the main menu has become simpler, and most importantly, it works very smoothly, even if the menu is called in parallel with the running game. Not surprisingly, there is a separate ARM processor with 256 MB of DDR3 memory for background tasks. Unlike its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 can easily handle multiple background downloads during gameplay, and there's a lot of emphasis on that.

PlayStation 4 regularly monitors the latest firmware updates or installed games and immediately starts downloading them. During testing, there were situations when the PS4 managed to download the necessary updates even before the corresponding game was downloaded and installed.

In general, the process is automated as much as possible and almost always runs in the background, so unnecessarily long pauses are excluded. This is one of the biggest improvements to the PS3 when it comes to user interface. The ability for background updates was added quite late for the PS3, and only in conjunction with the paid PSN Plus subscription.

Disc games must be installed. This process, however, is quite accelerated against the background of the PS3. For example, if there are several games and demo versions on the hard disk of the console (a couple of tens of gigabytes are used), then the initial installation of Killzone: Shadow Fall after inserting the disc takes about 1 minute and 23 seconds. Planned updates to the game will be downloaded as they are released. The main thing is that the installation of the game does not turn into a painfully long or inconvenient process.

Actually, the console really feels like it reflects its slogan "4TheGamers" ("for the players"). Everything is centered around gaming functions, and multimedia capabilities have been relegated to the background for now.

No joke, the set-top box currently does not play audio CDs and MP3 files, does not support DNLA streaming and 3D Blu-Ray. At one time, these features appeared on the PlayStation 3 almost before the main games! This time the opposite is true: various media will be added later, and the most necessary things like voice chat or the Share button are working right now.

An epic victory or failure, a curious moment from the game - all this can be saved as a memory in the form of a video or a screenshot and published on Twitter or Facebook.

By the way, when you press the Share button, the recorded scenes are saved on the hard disk and you can return to them later. What's more, you can stream your gameplay live on Ustream or Twitch! Such "social" functions have not yet been so integrated into the basic functionality of the set-top box. Here Sony is trying to keep up with the times and support the popular "social" chips.

Another interesting feature concerns interaction with the PlayStation Vita handheld and the PlayStation App for smartphones. The PlayStation 4 supports the hardware transfer of images to the PS Vita over the network, and the set-top boxes can be connected either directly over Wi-Fi or through a network infrastructure. This way, you can access your library of games even when you're away from home with your PlayStation Vita. True, for this the PlayStation 4 must work normally, and both consoles must have your PSN account. Nonetheless, this is an interesting feature, and there is a possibility that it will get further development. Also PS Vita or a smartphone with PlayStation App can be used in games as a "second screen".

Unfortunately, we failed to test the "second screen" mode (there were no games where it was used at hand), but remote playback on the PlayStation Vita works quite well. The delay between the original system and the stream on Vita in the menu is noticeable, but in games it is quite small - in fact, the delay here is comparable to some TVs. The image looks very good on the small screen, and only the frame rate is limited to 30 - this is the only significant "loss" when transferring video.

The console's built-in browser has improved dramatically. It runs quite smoothly and displays most of the pages correctly. It can be called right in parallel with the game to see clues in the passage or the location of secrets on the map. The only caveat is that it does not have Adobe Flash support, but the video from our site was played with a bang.

The basic settings of the console are easy enough. As already mentioned, there are not so many of them at the moment. And those that exist are made as user-friendly as possible.

For example, the video and audio settings for the PlayStation 3 were extensive, but certain settings could cause serious visual problems.

PlayStation 4 by default offers automatic selection of screen resolution and RGB range settings, which in our case worked absolutely correctly. For example, when we switched the set-top box from a TV with Full RGB support to a TV with a standard "limited" range, it immediately produced the correct video signal without blockage in the shadows. No manual intervention was required. And the set-top box also transmits the HDMI Content Type control signal, so modern TVs themselves activate the "game" mode when the PS4 is connected to them.

In general, if you do not understand all this, then with a high probability the PlayStation 4 itself will choose the correct settings for your TV or monitor.

Recognition is not always perfect, but it is enough to complement a gamepad. Text input can be done using the DualShock 4 gyroscopes - in this case, the letters are selected by tilting the controller. If you get used to it, then this method will seem more convenient to someone than a regular cursor. After all, you can connect a USB keyboard to your PS4 too.

And finally, a separate word should be said about regional peculiarities: the entire PlayStation 4 interface has been translated into Russian, including an interactive guide. Therefore, it will not be difficult to figure it out here. A significant part of the starting games also support Russian - and some projects, such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, have been fully translated and dubbed in their native language. Of course, sometimes there are vague intonations of the actors, but in general, the quality of the voice acting is not inferior to another film.

It is obvious that Sony is well prepared for the launch of the set-top box in Russia and the CIS, providing it with the necessary language pack.

DualShock 4 Gamepad

This important element of the console is a welcome surprise. From the first photos, it was not entirely clear how seriously the DualShock 4 differs from previous versions. As it turned out, the difference is felt from the very first seconds, when the new gamepad is in the hands.

Its shape has become more ergonomic, it fits perfectly in the hands. The back surface is made of "rough" plastic, so that the gamepad does not slip out of your hands, even in the most stressful moments. And finally, the rear "triggers" (R2 / L2 buttons), which are most often used in shooters and racing, have become a convenient curved shape. If earlier fingers slipped off them, now they have a good emphasis - it is much more convenient to shoot enemies in Killzone: Shadow Fall or Battlefield 4.

Analog "fungi" have also undergone some changes. Their surface is recessed to prevent fingers slipping, and sensitivity is improved. The tilt angle is digitized more accurately, although the increase is not obvious here, because there were no special problems with this before. But the new signal format with more accurate data required to revise the communication protocol of the gamepad with the console.

Although the developers achieved minimal latency in the wireless signal of the gamepad, this system turned out to be incompatible with the old DualShock 3 gamepads.

Sadly, older DualShock 3 gamepads won't work with PlayStation 4. But the new DualShock 4 is so good you don't want to go back to your old controllers.

Seven years after the launch of the PlayStation 3 console, Sony decided to present the players with a gift by announcing the release of the next, eighth generation, PlayStation 4. The PS 4 release date was not accidentally set for November 2013: Christmas and New Year holidays are ahead. will provide a high level of sales. Moreover, due to the wide range of games, the console has practically no age restrictions: both a child and an adult will like such a gift. So by the end of the year there were a lot of ads for “buy PS4” on the Internet.

But Sony was not the only company that decided to release a set-top box at this time. Firstly, back in 2012, again in November, Nintendo's Wii U console launched the eighth generation. The company has built on the experience of the previous Wii model and released an improved product that features a Wii U GamePad with a 6.2-inch touchscreen and high-definition video support. But literally a year later, Wii U had to fade into the background, or at least temporarily: practically together with the PS4, its main competitor, Xbox One from Microsoft, a representative of the same eighth generation, entered the market.

PlayStation 4 and XboxOne are similar in design in many respects, practically identical in technical characteristics and even less different in cost. To be precise, due to the Kinect 2.0 camera included in the kit, the Xbox costs more than its competitor at the start, but after purchasing the PlayStation 4 Eye, the cost of the consoles will become equal. A similar situation is observed with games. It is unlikely that developers of high-level projects such as Battlefield, Need For Speed or Assassin's Creed will miss the opportunity to create versions for each of the platforms.

Therefore, those buyers who hastened to make a New Year's gift, hesitating between the two consoles, probably faced serious agony of choice. We will not hesitate and, for a start, we will get acquainted with Sony PlayStation 4, and a little later with Microsoft Xbox One. Both consoles managed to go through the first "run-in", which gives us the opportunity to get acquainted in advance with the features of long-term operation of each console - both good and bad. We will dwell on this further in the PS4 review.

Design

In our subjective opinion, the design of the set-top box can be called ordinary, although there are several details that brighten up the overall picture: beveled corners, sharp edges, color scheme. On the other hand, everyone knows that "all ingenious is simple." Therefore, in order not to fall into a "holy war" with oneself, it is better to leave the assessment of the appearance at the discretion of the buyer.

PS4 is a parallelepiped of rather modest overall dimensions: 275x53x305 mm. It is vertically divided into two unequal parts made of matte and glossy plastic. The coating of the latter cannot be called the most practical, since it quickly becomes covered with small scratches and perfectly collects dust. It is better not to use the set-top box as a stand for a gamepad, discs or phone. At least the first time.

An LED is laid along the border between matte and glossy plastic, which changes its color depending on system events. For example, it glows blue when loading, and white during operation.

In standby mode, the LED pulses softly in orange, and when the console overheats, it lights up in an alarming red color. By the way, the red stripe has already been called "Line of death", but more on that later.

Horizontally, our parallelepiped is divided by a relatively deep "cut". Not only is it a decorative element, it hides the Blu-ray drive slot and USB ports on the front panel from our eyes, as well as air ducts on the sides for air circulation when the console is installed vertically.

Sony engineers have tried to give the PlayStation 4 design maximum functionality by hiding the power supply in the body of the console. It is important that the overall dimensions of the Japanese product give a significant head start to the American one. But there is also a downside to the coin: the power supply, hidden in the bowels of the case, surprisingly, heats up.

Side air ducts are intended for air intake. Warm air flows out through the vents on the rear panel. Therefore, the console should be positioned so that there is enough space on all three sides for more or less free air circulation. If the attachment is installed in a vertical position, then the air ducts on one side will be blocked. As a result - increased fan speed and noise, possible overheating. In this case, you will have to think about purchasing a Sony Vertical Stand equipped with slots for air circulation.

Immediately after the PS4 hit the market, Sony received many complaints about defective consoles. According to the company, the number of defective products was no more than 1% of the total sold, which "fits" into the norm. In our opinion, the noise was somewhat exaggerated. Having studied user reviews recently, we did not find any messages about the console failure, including due to overheating. But still, there are cases of the appearance of a red "line of death", the main reason is the incorrect installation of the console.

Connectors and controls

Not everyone can find the buttons for turning on the set-top box and ejecting the disc from the drive at once. They are located on the front panel, being a kind of continuation of the main LED. To trigger each button, just slide your finger over it. Confirming the press, the set-top box emits a low sound.

To the left of the buttons, you can see the drive slot. The disc is easy to insert even blindly, for which you should thank the cunning system of guiding elements. To the right of the buttons are USB 3.0 connectors. Their main purpose is to connect gamepads for charging, although it is also allowed to connect USB drives or gaming peripherals - headsets, keyboards, "mice". Unfortunately, at the moment, as at the start, support for USB devices is limited: first of all, it concerns connecting external hard drives.

It's also a bit odd that the console only comes with two USB ports. After all, this means that if you have two gamepads, you will not have free connectors for connecting other devices, so you will have to use a USB hub. As a result, the front panel of the PS4 runs the risk of becoming a "bush".

The main set of connectors and interfaces is located at the back. Let's list them in order: a connector for connecting a power cable, a Toslink SPDIF digital audio output for connecting to various sound systems, HDMI, an Ethernet network port and an AUX port for connecting a PlayStation Camera.

Unlike previous models, the PS4 does away with analog connectors and interfaces like AV Multi Out. If the TV, then only with HDMI, and with the obligatory support for HDCP. If, say, only a monitor with DVI input is available, then image transmission thanks to the appropriate adapter will not cause problems. They will be delivered by digital audio transmission.

Set

The kit, in addition to the console itself, includes:

  • gamepad DualShock 4;
  • mono headset;
  • power cable
  • HDMI cable;
  • USB cable for recharging gamepad

The version we got was also equipped with a PS4-exclusive game Killzone: Shadow Fall, which was taken as the basis for testing. Looking ahead, though, we also tried to download a couple of free games from the official app store. In general, PS4 games are not very common yet. Even GTA for PS4 has not appeared yet, but the developers promise to fix it soon, as well as with Battlefield 4.

As you can see, the kit contains only the essentials. There is no camera, as is the case with the Xbox One, no second gamepad, no stand for the vertical position of the console. This approach seems to us to be correct: if necessary, the user will choose and buy the components he likes, immediately or after a while.

A more complete understanding of the console will allow us to compose our video about the PS4:

PS4 Features

Compared to the previous model, the characteristics of the PlayStation 4 have changed significantly. And so much so that comparing consoles with a seven-year age difference no longer makes much sense. In our opinion, it is much more interesting to contrast the PS4 with its main competitor - the Xbox One.

In theory, we can say that the PlayStation 4 is more powerful than its competitor. The difference is especially noticeable on the example of the graphics subsystem: 1152 computational cores versus 768, 32 ROP-blocks versus 16, high-speed video memory GDDR5 versus DDR3. But both the CPU and GPU on the Xbox One run at a higher clock speed using ultra-fast eSRAM memory. Although, in general, in our opinion, in games specially "fitted" for a certain system, especially in cross-platform projects, this difference is unlikely to be noticeable at all.

More importantly, both consoles have moved from the IBM PowerPC architecture to the standard Intel x86 PC architecture. In practice, this means that from now on, game developers will not carefully study the hardware and rack their brains over adapting to the complex asymmetric Cell processor. As a result, there is a large number of cross-platform players on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

In terms of PCs, the PS4 could be put on a par with a decent gaming computer equipped with an 8-core processor, 8GB of fast RAM and a graphics accelerator similar to the AMD Radeon HD 7850/7870. Although such a comparison will not be entirely correct, because in the case of game consoles, each game is developed and optimized for a strictly defined system and equipment. That, for example, in the case of PS3 and Xbox 360, equipped with only 512 MB of RAM (shared for Xbox and separate for PS), made it possible to create very beautiful games that do not know the "brakes" at resolutions up to 1920x1080.

A 2.5-inch hard drive from HGST with a volume of 500 GB is used as a drive, the spindle rotation speed is 5400 rpm. At the start, the user has approximately 407 GB available, the rest is occupied by the system. Considering the "weight" of modern games - up to 50 GB, we can assume that there is not so much free space. Fortunately, unlike the Xbox One, the PS4's hard drive is replaceable. True, this will still require a certain skill.

Noise. Many users complain about this shortcoming. Both the cooling system and the drive can make noise. And if in the first case the problem can be solved by rearranging the console to another, more "ventilated" place, then you will have to get used to the noise of a Blu-ray drive. However, being keen on the gameplay, the user is unlikely to pay attention to it. However, for example, falling asleep in a room with a working PS4 is unlikely to work.

Separately, I would like to note the ability of the console to perform some operations in sleep mode. First of all, this is charging the gamepad and downloading updates and new games. The connection speed is significantly higher than in normal operating mode, so if you have access to the Internet, all data will always remain relevant.

Joystick PS4 - DualShock 4

Perhaps some designers were unhappy with the appearance of the DualShock 4 controller, since Sony did not reinvent the wheel, but left the gamepad in its familiar shape. However, DualShock is the main and often the only control element of the set-top box, therefore, judging by the changes made, its development was taken very seriously.

The PS4 joystick body uses two types of material: smooth plastic on the top, rough plastic on the bottom. Textured plastic helps keep the controller from slipping in sweaty palms. Which we confirm with our own example after several hours of playing the dynamic Killzone.

The DualShock 4 sits very comfortably in your hand. Surely Sony engineers calculated the overall dimensions of the gamepad in fractions of a millimeter. For us, the most noticeable difference is the long and massive handles. Immediately it is possible to replace the changed shape of the case on the back, which facilitates access to the "triggers", modified analog stick-sticks and a new shape of the cross buttons. The changes also affected the main buttons: firstly, now they are not as convex as in the DualShock 3, and secondly, they are no longer analog, so the degree of pressing is no longer taken into account.

Fingers easily reach all the controls, except perhaps for the new Share and Options buttons, which have been replaced by the familiar Select and Start. Perhaps this is the only drawback in the ergonomics of the DualShock 4: the new buttons are too high with respect to the thumbs, and it is also inconvenient to use the index fingers. In addition, the flat shape of the buttons makes blind searches difficult.

The bulk of the negative emotions of most users fell on the large LED indicator located on the back of the gamepad body. Due to its constant operation, and without the possibility of shutdown, the life of a 1000 mAh battery has decreased to 5-6 hours.

However, the function of the LED does not only include a multi-colored indication of the health status of your in-game hero, as in Killzone. The illuminated panel serves as a beacon to help the Sony PlayStation 4 Eye camera locate a player or identify multiple users playing on the same console. They each get their own unique panel color, after which the console places the players within the game in the order in which they are in the room.

Another interesting feature of the gamepad is the touch pad, which can also serve as a button for both the right and left thumb. The sensor registers two touches at the same time. In Killzone, the touchpad is used to control the cyber assistant, and in Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag, to zoom the world map. The developers' imaginations are now unlimited.

Under the PS button, which performs the same function, there is a small speaker used to sound some game events. For example, in Killzone, such an event was the reading of a found diary. Frankly, the suddenly speaking gamepad was very effective. If desired, the speaker volume can be made quieter or turned off: to do this, call up a special menu by holding down the PS button.

Even below you can see the connector for connecting a mono headset designed to communicate with other players or voice control of the set-top box, as well as a connector for connecting peripherals: for example, mini-keyboards.

The vibration motors, gyroscope and accelerometer remained in place. By the way, the use of the latter can be checked when typing - after pressing R3 (right analog stick), the digital pointer mode is activated. Unfortunately, our prototype did not stay with us long enough to appreciate the new method. Nevertheless, we believe that many users will get used to this particular mode, abandoning the use of the D-pad buttons.

Basically, Sony offers to test all the features of the gamepad in the free supplied game ThePlayroom. For a more complete immersion in the game world, a camera is desirable, although the application can be launched without it.

System

The first launch of a new console, if it is connected to the Internet, must be accompanied by downloading the current firmware version. This process takes a little time and, as a rule, goes unnoticed, since a new user will always find another thing to do: admire the instant movement through all menu levels or look into the settings. In addition, the firmware can be downloaded to a USB drive in advance and the update can be installed from it by running the STB in SafeMode.

The new menu called PlayStation Dynamic Menu, like everything in PlayStation 4, differs significantly from the interface in PS3. However, everything is extremely simple. The menu structure is three-level. The upper level consists of mini-bookmarks: access to the application store, information about the player's profile, calling settings, turning off the console, etc. And, what is nice, the menu in PS4 is in Russian.

The middle level contains the "icons" of the installed games. The most frequently launched games are automatically shifted to the left, since this is where the "cursor" is set when the console is launched. The rest of the games are to the right.

The lower, third level is used to describe the selected game. It contains information about the last launch and completed levels, trophies received, updates, achievements of friends, information from the developer comes here.

True to its name, the menu is really very dynamic, the movements are quick and smooth. Without exaggeration and flattery, we can say that in addition to speed, the operating system interface has another advantage - simplicity. Connecting to Wi-Fi, creating a new account, connecting with Facebook and Twitter, video and audio settings of the console did not cause absolutely any difficulty.

PS4 Games

At the start, users complained about the following points: games take up a lot of space, they are expensive, they are few. If you can cope with the first problem by installing a more capacious drive, and simply accept the second, then the third complaint really took place. But only at the start.

Sony currently offers 20 exclusive games only, i.e. developed specifically for the PlayStation 4, including Killzone: Captured by the Twilight, Assassin's Creed IV: BlackFlag, #DRIVECLUB races, several children's games. If you connect third-party developers, then on PS4 you can play Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Need for Speed Rivals and FIFA 14.

Any game can be purchased in electronic or disc format. Both methods have their pros and cons: the disc can be sold, exchanged, or simply stored in a closet. Installation from disk takes much less time, although it is possible that later the game may become "outdated" and each installation will be accompanied by a mandatory download of updates. But the disc itself is not eternal, it can be damaged or simply lost. During the game, the presence of a disc in the drive is required.

The electronic version is not threatened with damage, it is always available, the Blu-ray drive is not involved. The main problem is to wait for the game to download. However, thanks to the ability to download in sleep mode, this task becomes less burdensome. Moreover, it is not necessary to wait until all 40 GB are downloaded. After the first data packet is downloaded (usually 2-4 GB), the console will inform you that the game can be started. By the way, the purchased game can be launched on one more console besides the "main" one. The main thing is not to forget the password for your account.

To play online, you need to purchase a PlayStation Plus subscription - annual or monthly. In general, the use of modern consoles threatens with constant expenses: the device itself, additional accessories, games, PS Plus, add-ons to games ... Obviously, you should immediately prepare yourself for the fact that PS4 games are not cheap.

As for the launch of games from PS3 on PS4, everything is quiet here and nothing is known. Sony has not made any promises about this. But games from PS2 may well earn money - this is what the news about PS4 speaks about. Everything can be started in emulation mode.

Simultaneously with the release of the PlayStation 4, the price of the PlayStationVita handheld console was reduced. This was done for a reason: the main and pocket attachments are taught to interact with each other.

In any case, Sony has provided such an opportunity, and how it will be used depends on the developers. At a minimum, if Wi-Fi is available, the PSVita console can be used as a portable 5-inch TV to which a PS4 game is streamed. In addition, the pocket console can be used as a second gamepad. In doing so, the two triggers that are missing on the Vita have been moved to the rear touchpad.

If the developer expresses a desire to use all the possibilities, then the PS Vita screen can be used as an auxiliary one. Additional information will be displayed here: inventory, map or special in-game events.

It’s a pity that we didn’t have it in the PS Vita. However, YouTube videos and user reviews prove that there are no streaming stutters when playing CallofDuty: Ghosts or Battlefield 4.

Output

Games and only games - this is what the console is for, this is the raison d'être of its existence. Unfortunately, despite the time that has passed since the start of sales, only a small number of exclusives or good multiplatforms that have not yet been tested are available for the experienced player. For a beginner, the situation is much more favorable: the existing offers will be more than enough until new hits are released.

PS3 users do not have to rush to change the third "curling iron" for the fourth. Despite the seven-year history, even Sony believes that the third model has not passed, which means that the PS3 will still see good games. It's another matter when "heavy artillery" is used in the form of NextGen games, which 100% use powerful, and most importantly, correct hardware from the developer's point of view. Overall, the move to an architecture close to many game creators inspires confidence that the PS4 will see a ton of good games. And the more there are, the cheaper they will be.

In our opinion, the PlayStation 4 is designed specifically for games, although it has some rudiments of a multimedia center. Still, Sony has tried to make the perfect device from the point of view of the player. This is facilitated by a well-thought-out menu interface, ease of download and installation, a convenient and sophisticated DualShock 4 gamepad. It remains only to wait a little while the potential of the console is fully realized.

It makes no sense to compare PS4 and computer capabilities, even strictly gaming ones. It's much more interesting to see what the Xbox One has to offer in response. But for this we have yet to get acquainted with the console from Microsoft.

PS4 price

You can buy a PS4 today not only in Moscow, but also across Russia. There is a PS4 in stock in Ukraine, as well as in other CIS countries. It went on sale all over the world, not in several countries like the Xbox One. Another thing is that the price of the PS4 is set at a very "biting" - an average of 23 thousand rubles, while in the west this amount does not exceed $ 399 before taxes. The difference is palpable. Moreover, it is not yet available in all large stores such as M.Video and the like. But in any case, PS4 is in stock in many stores.

The PlayStation 4's only competitor is the Xbox One. It costs about 25 thousand rubles. Moreover, note that it is not officially on sale in Russia yet. So, de jure, the Sony console does not have this competitor either.

Pros:

  • reasonable price of the device and individual components;
  • the minimum set of delivery, which reduces the final cost;
  • small size;
  • lack of an external power supply;
  • no need to "upgrade" the filling for at least five to seven years;
  • high quality graphics and honest 1080p resolution;
  • replaceable hard drive;
  • convenient and functional joystick DualShock 4;
  • fast and well thought-out menu interface;
  • downloading games in sleep mode;
  • integration with PS Vita.

Minuses:

  • scratching glossy plastic;
  • the need for free space for air circulation;
  • the need to purchase a stand for vertical installation;
  • optical drive noise;
  • DualShock 4 battery runs out quickly
  • a small number of games at the start;
  • high cost of games;
  • the need to subscribe to PS Plus for online play;
  • Audio CDs and MP3 files cannot be played;
  • no DLNA streaming support.

The first PlayStation 4 model

The Sony PlayStation 4 is an eighth generation video game console developed and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was presented to the public on February 20, 2013, and went on sale on November 29.

With the three main models of this console on the market, it can be easy to get confused about the different specifications and features of each model. We're going to take a look at ps4 specs in this article and let you know which model is right for you.

Dimensions (edit)

The first version, which Sony is phasing out in favor of a smaller model, is nearly 11 "wide, 2" high and 12 "long.

The PlayStation4 Pro, with its expanded power and graphics capabilities, is, on the contrary, larger. Almost a foot wide, two inches high and nearly 13 inches long, which is a significant increase from Slim in particular. The comparison shot below shows the dimensions of each model.

For those who care about how much space the set-top box takes up, the Pro model is not for them.

The PlayStation 4 Slim, released in September 2016, replaces the base PS4 model, and its baseline specifications are largely the same as the original 2013 model. This means that you will not see:

  • Improved graphics or performance, but there are a few small differences. Most notably, the PS4 Slim is much smaller.
  • Its 11x10x1.5 "body is smaller than the original 12x10x8.2" body. It's also 1.6 pounds lighter, weighing just 4.6 pounds.

All models of this console

The weight

The Pro is 3.3 kilograms (or over 7 pounds) heavier than earlier versions. The PlayStation 4 Slim lives up to its official name with a relatively light weight of 2.1 kilograms. That's a little more than £ 4.5, which is nice for people who take their console with them and carry it frequently between friends' rooms and homes, or often take their console with them on trips.

The original PlayStation4 is a nice middle ground for the two. It's heavier than the Slim - at 2.8 kilograms or 6 pounds - and not too much larger than the Pro. Thus, the current owners of the first model should easily adapt to the weight of the Pro.

Comparison of technical characteristics

The PlayStation 4 Pro has more powerful options than Slim or the original PS4.

Although the processor itself is the same in all three systems, in the Pro version it is overclocked at 2.1 GHz, while the original runs at 1.6 GHz. It also has a GPU capable of squeezing 4.20 teraflops out of itself, while the thin version and original version only achieves 1.84 teraflops of GPU.

Of course, with great performance, there are big electricity bills. Specifically, the Pro uses a ton of energy when it is running; its maximum power is 310 W, but the slim version consumes less energy.

Unlike the first version of the console, the Slim version got rid of the semi-glossy finish and got a completely matte black look. Slim also has rounded corners in contrast to the sharper design of the original model.

There are some Ps4 improvements in the Slim model as a technical specification. It now supports 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is faster than the 2.4GHz wireless band on the first version of the console, provided you have a router that can handle that band. Slim also supports Bluetooth 4.0, which is more energy efficient and provides better wireless audio performance. Another new addition that Slim features is USB 3.1 support, which is twice as fast as the original 3.0 ports.

The PS4 Slim is also slightly more energy efficient overall. While the original PS4 is rated at 250 watts, the Slim has 165 watts. Its more energy efficient design allows it to run a little cooler and actually quieter.

Should you buy the Slim version if you have a regular

Slim has no dramatic improvements over the first model. If you already own a full-fledged PlayStation4, buying a Slim doesn't make a lot of sense. Plus, if you want a more powerful PlayStation, the PlayStation 4 Pro is what you want.

PS4 / PS4 Slim vs PS4 Pro

Important! On November 10, the PlayStation 4 lineup began to look radically different as two new models hit retail. The PlayStation lover, well versed in specs and models, knows exactly how to recognize one console version from another.

Comparing the entire family of PlayStation 4 products of this generation - that will be the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 slim and PlayStation 4 Pro - is no easy task if you're willing to take the time. Below you will find how each PS4 version differs in size, processing power, and most importantly, looks.

  1. The Slim version is just a reduction of the base model, released in 2016, the Pro, unlike it, already has a solid hardware update that significantly improves the performance of this console. Sony designed this model to compete with Microsoft in the 4K TV market.

Since 4K resolution is almost four times the FULLHD resolution, it requires a more powerful GPU. Therefore, the Pro version is equipped with a 911 MHz GPU based on the AMD Polaris microarchitecture. That's 2.2x more than PS4 / PS4 Slim. While it's still the same eight-core Jaguar processor from AMD, it runs the PRO at a higher 2.1GHz, 500MHz higher than the PS4 / PS4 Slim. RAM in the Pro console is still 8GB of GDDR5 memory, as in previous models, but with the addition of 1GB of regular DDR3 memory to support 4K resolution.

  1. The Pro version also uses a SATA III based hard drive, as opposed to the original SATA II solution. This means that if you put an SSD in the Pro, it can get significantly faster.

In terms of design, the Pro version is significantly larger and heavier than the base model, measuring 11x10x1.5 inches and weighing 7.2 pounds. Aesthetically, it maintains the slanted design of the original console, but prefers to use the rounded corners that first appeared on the PS4 Slim. There is also a new LED power bar on the front. Unlike the Slim model, this version boasts an SPDIF port, so you can use it with soundbars that require an optical connection. Finally, it has three USB 3.1 ports, which are even larger than Slim.

Other differences

This might be of interest to those who tend to use their console as a charging station for compatible devices of all kinds. Two early models, both come with two USB ports on the front of the console. About? This version has three USB ports. This is ideal for charging these new DualShock 4 controllers which drain faster due to their capacitive touchpad.

In addition, this console is most commonly sold with a 500 GB hard drive. A smaller version will also ship with this hard drive, but there will also be a 1TB version available at retail. The Pro comes with a 1TB hard drive as standard.

What are the benefits of PlayStation4 Pro

While the Pro currently sells for $ 100 more than the scaled-down version, its more powerful hardware allows it to run certain games at 4K or above 1080p. Some games may also receive frame rate improvements or may display higher quality graphics.

While its benefits are most apparent when combined with a 4K TV, it is capable of supersampling certain games on 1080p displays. Supersampling is an effective form of anti-aliasing that removes unwanted edge edges from playstation video.

Are there any differences in the user interface

PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro use the same operating system and user interface.

Services and games

Interesting! You can buy games either on disks in stores or on the Internet, as well as buy digital versions of games in the official sony store, playstation store.

When it comes to apps and games, this console has two great services. One of them is PlayStation Plus - this is a subscription, now it is a requirement for online games, without it you will not be able to play online. But on the other hand, this subscription gives you a selection of free games every month.

The second service is PlayStation Now. You can rent and then transfer a growing selection of PS3 games for 2-day or 30-day periods, and they all run smoothly and reasonably without loss. It's not a great way to play games you already have on PS3 as you pay for this privilege, but it could be a good way to catch up on any PS3 classic you missed out on.

PlayStation.Plus service

If you have not purchased this console yet and you have a FullHD TV and you just need a good console for games - PS4, PS4 Slim is a smart choice for you. We wouldn't suggest an upgrade to Slim if you already own a PS4, given that you won't get any even minimal performance boost. If you own a 4K TV, or are thinking of buying one soon, the Pro version is the best investment, with superior, more reliable hardware that can run games in better quality.

Appearance

On the Internet, you can now easily find the work of designers and 3D-modelers - futuristic and interesting versions of the hypothetical PlayStation 4, the way we imagined a new generation device before its official announcement. In fact, everything turned out to be much simpler - the console looks very conservative and most of all resembles the PlayStation 2. A small black box (smaller than the PS3 Slim), without visible buttons and protrusions, feels better in a horizontal position. The body also becomes vertical without problems, but for this it is better to acquire an additional stand, which will be available later.

On the front there are a pair of USB ports and a disc tray, on the back there are HDMI, LAN and S / PDIF connectors, and a PlayStation Camera jack. There are no analog interfaces.

⇡ What's inside?

Those who like to build the most powerful computers every year and a half will hardly be impressed by the technical characteristics of the console. However, it should be noted here that the PlayStation 4, like any other game console, is a product for the widest audience, so it simply cannot cost several thousand dollars. And for a device for 500 conventional units (compare with similar system units), everything is even very interesting here:

Sony abandoned the unique processor architecture: the unusual Cell in the PlayStation 3 can hardly be called a successful experience in all respects - there were too many problems with porting games and developing with non-standard means. The PS4, on the other hand, is based on an AMD x86-64 hybrid processor, which, in addition to the processing cores, has a memory controller and a graphics core.

Yes, the architecture of the new console is not much different from an ordinary computer - and numerous developers, judging by the loud statements in the news, are only happy about this. There is also a negative aspect: on the PlayStation 4, hardware implementation of backward compatibility of games with PS3 is impossible, but Sony plans to solve this problem in the (not) foreseeable future with the help of "cloud" services. No wonder the Japanese bought Gaikai in their time.

Food for thought for those readers who are still skeptical about the technical data of the console. The predecessor had only 512 MB of RAM, which, even by the standards of 2006, seemed a rather modest figure. At the same time, PS3 had Uncharted, God of War 3, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us and other incredibly beautiful exclusives that simply would not have started on a computer with similar characteristics. Therefore, yes - it's all about optimizing games for specific equipment, and you shouldn't even try to compare the contents of the console with the contents of your system unit.

Gamepad

Sony has always been very conservative in the design of gamepads - the DualShock 3 outwardly did not differ much from the controller of the first PlayStation. But the DualShock 4 is a huge step forward; the device is simple incredible comfortable and pleasant in the hands. It seems that the engineers have calculated the ideal weight and the most correct button and stick placement to fit any palm size.

The basic concept remains the same, although there are several important innovations. Firstly, a touch-sensitive area appeared in the center of the top panel, although the degree of its functionality is still in question. For example, in Killzone: Shadow Fall, using the touchpad, you can give commands to your partner drone (and this is not very convenient); in other games, the developers will probably hang some kind of "stroking" puzzles or QTE scenes on this sensory area.

Secondly, there is a Share button, which allows you to upload live video from games and broadcast through streaming services. This button, as well as the symmetrically located Options, is not very convenient to press - it is too tight, you have to make some effort.

Thirdly, on the front side of the case there is an LED indicator with four color modes. The manufacturer conceived this so that the gamepad can be identified by color if, for example, several people are playing. Although Sony left the decision to the discretion of the developers - in the same Killzone, the color of the diode indicates the health status of the character.

The controller also houses a headset slot and speaker; gyroscopes, accelerometer, vibration motors - everything, of course, is also in place.

Non-removable 1000 mAh battery provides only 7-8 hours of play without recharging; this can rightly be called a weak indicator - for comparison: the DualShock 3 withstood 30 hours. It seems that you will have to endlessly sit "on the wire".

In addition, it should be noted that the predecessor gamepads and other third-party peripherals are not supported by the PlayStation 4; the only exception is the PS Move motion controller.

Despite a number of shortcomings (small battery, awkward press on Share and Options, controversial touchpad), the DualShock 4 is the best controller Sony has ever made. And one of the most comfortable gamepads in general - of those that we held in our hands.

⇡ Turning on the console and operating system

At the first launch, the PS4 requested an update - it took only 15 minutes, although before that there was a problem with Wi-Fi: the console did not want to make friends with one of the routers. The problem is purely individual, but the PS3 also had a number of difficulties with wireless home networks - some games refused to work via the Internet until the router with port forwarding was properly (and, I must say, not quite obvious) configured.

The logic of the arrangement of objects on the home screen has changed (albeit not much), but the most important thing here is that the operating system has become truly multitasking - you can "minimize" the game and go browse in the browser or in the PlayStation Store. True, it is still impossible to launch two games at the same time - even a "big" one from a disk and some downloadable trifle, which is a pity.

Another nice thing is that PS4 can quickly enter sleep mode and "wake up" relatively quickly (about 10 seconds). However, paused games are now automatically closed anyway, which somewhat contradicts the very idea of instant activation of the device - Sony promised to fix this by releasing a corresponding patch. But in sleep mode, the console can already download content and recharge gamepads.

But the PS Store is still the same nerdy. Long loading of pictures, annoying freezes when switching between sections - in general, nothing has changed. But finally, the download queue is working fine - the ability to download a large amount of content that will be saved to a local disk in the background - even if you are playing at that time. And by the way, the download speed from PSN is still very encouraging - but, probably, the point is only that at the time of testing the full-scale launch of the system in Europe had not yet taken place, and the servers were relatively free.

The user profile is more convenient and functional - the PSN account is easily linked to Facebook and Twitter, and the statistics of prizes, saved content and everything else are displayed very clearly. There is also an indispensable browser, but, in general, there is nothing to tell about it.

The device is very quiet, but noticeably warms up from behind - the manufacturer previously indicated that the console should not be placed close to the wall. Games are almost entirely installed on the hard drive, so there are almost no access to optical media - this, of course, adds speed and the desired silence. Although the data volumes of individual games are impressive - under 50 gigabytes, so active users will run out of free space very quickly. They also wrote scary things on the Internet about hours of installation of games - in our case, nothing like that happened; The 41GB Killzone: Shadow Fall took about half an hour to install.

Don't forget that the PlayStation 4 is not only a game console, but also a media player. The device plays films from DVD and Blu-Ray discs and works with popular Western services, most of which, alas, are not available in Russia. There is no DLNA support at launch, and it is not known if it will appear in the future.

⇡ Social features and Share button

You can do three things with the Share button: take screenshots, save videos, and stream your game to Twitch or Ustream.

Screenshots are saved by long pressing Share - then you can find them in your profile, in the folder of the corresponding game, and then upload them to Facebook or Twitter. As for the recording of "live" game video, the last 15 minutes of gameplay are saved by default (developers can prohibit copying, for example, plot videos or some episodes), but the user has the ability to double-click Share to specify the exact moment when the recording starts. The video clip is still exported only to Facebook with a very compromise compression - a 15-minute file in conventional HD weighs about 300 megabytes. An example of a recording of a somewhat inept play in Killzone: Shadow Fall of the author of this article can be viewed

For almost seven years, game console fans have been waiting for the release of a new version of their favorite console - it was noticeable on the first day of PS4 sales - more than a million consoles were sold in Japan and the United States alone. In this review we will tell you about the appearance of the PS4 console, its technical characteristics, configuration, hardware and software.

  • Appearance and equipment of Sony Playstation 4

    PS4, as expected, is made in a minimalist style - the console is a small "obelisk" made of black plastic with a glossy surface. Of course, the gloss is easily scratched with active use, but the console looks just amazing, in the classic Japanese hi-tech design. PS4 can be installed both vertically and horizontally, this will not affect its functionality in any way, and the appearance will remain beautiful.

    In addition to the set-top box itself, Sony supplies one DualShock 4 joystick-gamepad, an HDMI cable for connecting to a TV, four different power cables, two USB cables for charging PS4, a headset with one earphone, and instructions for use with the Playstation 4

    This time Sony decided not to bother too much with the Playstation interfaces and provided the set-top box with only the most necessary connectors.

    On the front of the PS4 are two ports for USB cables, as well as a BD drive, on the back there is an HDMI port, AUX, optical S / PDIF and RJ-45. By the way, in the new version of Sony Playstation, the set-top box can be connected to a TV only via HDMI, which most modern TVs have. The S / PDIF digital audio output will allow you to connect the console to a wide variety of sound systems, and the Ethernet port to the wired Internet, although the set-top box itself is also equipped with a Wi-Fi adapter with support for 802.11n.

  • PS4 specs and hardware

    The new set-top box from Sony is equipped with an 8-core AMD Jaguar processor with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz. In the new version, the developers decided to switch to using the standard x86 PC architecture. This step will allow video game developers to simplify the process of studying the hardware stuffing of the device, which will greatly facilitate the development process itself. The studios themselves pushed Sony to this step, pointing out the console architecture as the top priority. The developers have increased the memory capacity from 256 MB to 8 GB, which significantly improves the performance of the console.

    The technical characteristics of the new Sony Playstation do not boggle the imagination and are average for PC hardware, there are certain advantages in this. Previous generations of PS suffered from severe overheating, which led to their rapid failure. The mobile hardware of the new PS4 will significantly reduce the heating of consoles, which will have a positive effect on their durability.

    The Sony Playstation 4 optical drive operates at a constant rotational speed, allowing you to play both regular DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. It is worth noting that the latter are the main carriers of video games and films for the console. It is obligatory to install games on the console's hard drive, the volume of which is 500 GB.

    Let's list the technical characteristics of Sony Playstation 4:

    • Processor: 8-core AMD Jaguar (x86-64) with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz.
    • Graphics: Latest generation AMD Radeon, 1.84 teraflops performance.
    • Network connection: Ethernet (cable connection), IEEE 802.11 b / g / n (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth 2.1
    • RAM: 8GB (GDDR5)
    • Hard drive: 500 GB (replaceable).
  • Sony Playstation software

    PS4 has a new shell interface with a minimalist design. This allows the console not to load the device's RAM for the needs of the interface - so you can make several downloads and play heavy games at the same time.

    The software independently monitors the current updates and downloads them, this applies both to the firmware of the device itself and to updates of installed (or being installed) games.

    Navigating the main menu is fluid and lag-free, which is an absolute improvement over the PS3 interface. In addition, the developers have given users the ability to take screenshots of games and post them to Facebook or Twitter.

    The built-in PS4 browser deserves special mention. Everything works smoothly, no flaws were noticed. Most sites open correctly. Although there is no support for Adobe Flash, many video browsers open and play. The browser supports the ability to work simultaneously with games, which will allow you to look at tips on the passage or other tips on the game at any time.

    PS3 users faced a lot of difficulties due to the overloaded settings of the console. In PS4, the settings are so simplified and the optimization is so good that you most likely won't have to use the settings.

    The developers also thought about the localization of the device: the entire Playstation 4 interface has been translated into Russian, including the interactive instructions, so no one should have any problems with mastering the console.

    The technical characteristics of Sony Playstation 4 allow you to play all games in Full HD resolution, while maintaining FPS at the level of 30-60.
