Kutna Hora with a visit to the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin and the Cathedral of St. Barbara. Ossuary in the suburbs of Kutna Hora.

Traveling to Kutna Hora is always very interesting. After all, this city once competed with Prague itself in importance. Kutna Hora was built for a long time, repeatedly destroyed, and each time revived anew. The city was founded near the monastery of the Cistercians, who appeared in these places as early as the 10th century. Its growth was due to the presence of silver. In the 14th century, the miners' settlement was transformed into a city by royal decree. It is from this moment that the heyday of Kutna Hora begins. On the territory of the monastery there is a cemetery, which, thanks to the Cistercian monks, is becoming the most popular in the area. Several sacks of earth were brought from Golgotha in the 13th century, and the place of comfort for the living turns into a place of pilgrimage. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, destroyed by the Hussites, was rebuilt in the 17th century by Jan Aichel Santini, and flour was stored in the cathedral in the 18th century. Now it is a magnificent cathedral - the decoration of the whole Czech Republic. In the 14th century, the construction of the Cathedral of St. Barbara, the patroness of miners, began on the territory of Kutna Hora. This cathedral is listed by UNESCO.

Kutna Hora - the city of silver (Bone!) and the Czech Sternberg castle

KUTNA HORA

The legend says that while walking through the hills, one monk was overwhelmed by a dream, and he dreamed of silver ingots. Waking up, the priest found silver nearby and hid it under his cassock. This was the beginning of a settlement that grew into a medieval city Kutna Hora, which in translation means "old monastic cassock".

City Kutna Hora once rightfully competed with Prague for the championship in the Czech kingdom. Thanks to the silver mines, Kutná Hora became the epicenter of the "silver rush". Silver was mined in the local mines, and the royal mint was located here. Furthermore, Kutna Hora competed with Prague also in the field of culture and the majestic Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara is in no way inferior to the Prague St. Vita. The main tourist destination in Kutne Hora is the famous Ossuary. Its interior - both frightening and fascinating - is made of human bones. The medieval city of silver miners and wealthy merchants is famous for its amazingly preserved medieval and Gothic monuments and is included in the list of monuments protected by UNESCO.

CZECH STERHBERG-Castle grew up on the rocky bank of the Sazava River in 1241. It was built by Zdeslav from Divishov. The castle was conquered in 1467 by King Jiří of Poděbrady. From 1949 it was nationalized by the state until 1992, then it returned to the Sternberks again. The castle is privately owned. The first village at the foot of the Český Šternberk castle arose in the 13th century. In 1901, a railway line was built here, and Český Šternberk, due to its historical value and good accessibility, became a tourist destination for the unique ossuary church and the majestic church of St. Barbara.

Excursion to Karlštejn and Konopiste castles

This tour allows you to get acquainted with two of the most interesting castles in the Czech Republic in one day, make a trip to two different eras.

Karlstejn

The majestic and impregnable Karlštejn Castle was the main fortress of Emperor Charles IV. He fully corresponded to his high position as master of Europe. For many years treasures of the Holy Roman Empire, holy Christian relics, Czech crown jewels and the State Archives were kept here...

In 1355 the Czech King Charles IV ascended the throne of the Holy Roman Emperor. This event radically changed the fate of, at that time, provincial Prague, making it the capital of Europe for 23 years. However, it was not safe to store the huge wealth of the empire in Prague. And so the emperor, attracting the best architects of that time, builds a majestic fortress, Karlstejn. She fully corresponded to his high position as the master of Europe and became truly impregnable. For many years, the treasures of the Holy Roman Empire, holy Christian relics, Czech crown jewels and the state archive were kept here.

Konopiste

One of the most picturesque and rich castles in the Czech Republic, owned by Crown Prince Ferdinand d "Este, whose murder was the reason for the outbreak of the First World War. An indelible impression is made by a rich collection of hunting trophies and unique weapons of the Archduke, decorating the interiors, corridors and stairs of the castle. Many exhibits, for example, the shooting range with moving targets is unparalleled. The castle is surrounded by a magnificent picturesque park with strolling peacocks, beautiful sculptures, fountains, ponds and a garden of roses.

Individually! Kutna Hora is a city stuck in the Middle Ages. Ossuary

Individual excursion to the Medieval city - Kutna Hora.

The history of Kutna Hora is inextricably linked with the extraction of silver ores. Thanks to its wealth, Kutna Hora becomes the second most important city of the Czech Kingdom after Prague. The wealth of the local mines, which became the economic stronghold of the power of the Czech kings, created the opportunity for the emergence of many monuments, thanks to which the city was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
The first stop on our journey will be the Ossuary created by František Rint. According to estimates, in the decoration of the ossuary, the remains of 40,000 people. There is no other like it in the world. Can you imagine a more unusual interior element than a chandelier made from human bones, or a decoration made from a human shoulder blade or hip bone? This is really a strange place.
Further, our path lies to the Cathedral of St. Barbara (14th century).

Let's walk through the narrow streets of the city, which seems to be frozen in a half-asleep.

And if you wish, you can also visit the Silver Museum and go down into the medieval mine.

“Most often people leave a small town to dream of returning there…” Chuck Palahniuk modern amer. writer.

Invention of the Ossuary in Kutna Hora

A little over an hour from Prague is Kutna Hora- a city that has experienced greatness and decline. Silver deposits, accidentally discovered by monks during the collection, brought wealth and glory to Kutna Hora in the Middle Ages. An ore market operated in the city, where merchants from all over Europe came for silver, a central mint was opened, where silver coins were minted. At different times, these were Prague pennies, florens, tollars ... In those days, Kutna Hora was considered the economic capital of the kingdom, and in terms of the degree of influence on public life in the country, Kutna Hora was sometimes ahead of Prague. Traces of the long-standing rivalry between the two great cities of the Middle Ages are still visible in the architectural appearance of Kutna Hora.

Long ago, that monastery was closed, and the silver mines were depleted. A few centuries ago, times of stagnation came to Kutna Hora and, gradually, the city turned into a monument to its former greatness. As a memento, there was a magnificent example of Gothic - the church of St. Barbarians, ancient wall frescoes in which they tell about the life of the miners of the Middle Ages. But the temple with its architectural luxury rather contrasts with the city of Kutna Hora itself.

Just 60 km from the capital, you can see the quiet life of a small provincial town, and this is a completely different Czech Republic.

Usually visitors to the Czech Republic have little to say about the name Kutná Hora, but many have heard of a temple on the bones, chandeliers made of human remains and tens of thousands of skulls. A burning interest to see this in reality, and the desire to find out whether it is true or a hoax, designed for impressionable tourists, lead many curious people to the town of Kutna Hora.

The ossuary, or the very ossuary, is located in the Church of All Saints in the village of Sedlec near Kutna Hora. Legend has it that once upon a time holy earth was brought to this place from Jerusalem, and an ordinary cemetery suddenly became honorary. All the nobility and rich people aspired to be buried here. Numerous wars, epidemics and quite ordinary deaths of people led to the overflow of the cemetery and the need to clear it. It was decided to honor the memory of the dead and buried in Kutna Hora in a very peculiar way. The remains of the dead were dug up and laid under the cemetery church; in the Middle Ages in many European countries there was such a custom of reburials. This is how the ossuary appeared on the outskirts of Kutna Hora, which is now open to the public. “We are what you will be, and you are what you were…” — you often see such an inscription near the cemetery. The man of the Middle Ages looked at the world around, at life and death much easier ...

A trip to Kutná Hora to the Ossuary evokes a variety of emotions: children, seeing mountains of white bones, experience joy from an unusual sight, adults will think about the frailty of existence and the meaning of life. Souvenir shops in Kutna Hora are filled with crystal, figurines reminiscent of Ossuary, and various little things with the symbols of the Czech Republic.

The second part of the tour is dedicated to the Czech Sternberg castle, located 40 minutes drive from the city of Kutna Hora.

Český Sternberg Castle considered one of the oldest in the Czech Republic, it was founded in the middle of the XIII century, but life in it has not died out, since from the moment of its foundation to the present day the castle belongs to the noble family of Sternberg, and its owner lives here now.

The cost of the excursion to Kutná Hora does not include entrance tickets to the Church of St. Barbara, the Ossuary and the Český Sternberg Castle.

Greetings blog readers.

The New Year is coming, I have a lot of free time, so I am writing notes that I did not have time to write during my studies.

In the note, as usual, there will be a lot of photos and my personal comments. I’ll make a reservation right away - I don’t like typical tourist places, therefore, as always, most of them will not understand what 🙂

Be careful, there are a lot of photos ahead, take care of the traffic 🙂

We went on a Thursday morning. On weekday mornings, cities are usually empty - people are working.

By the way, getting to the police is not easy for an inexperienced tourist - first we go to Kolin, then to the main station of Kutná Hora, and then - on a cool two-car yellow train we go for a short time to the Kutná Hora - Město station. Then 5 minutes walk up the hill - and we are in the police.

I started taking pictures only after receiving a biometric card - I didn’t get distracted 🙂

The weather was so-so, overcast. This is how official life in the Czech Republic met us 🙂

By the way, the word "mountain" in the name of the city is not by chance - the city is located far from the plain. This will be seen in many of the following photos. I remember that on the very first day on the train I got into a conversation with a Czech - he praised both Podebrady and Nymburk (he was from there) for the fact that the landscape is flat - it is easy to ride a bicycle.

In Poděbrady cyclists are everywhere, here they are nowhere.

I love looking at the little things. For example, the owners of this house are tired of pulling spam out of the box.

As elsewhere in the Czech Republic, the city seems to be collapsing, but it seems not.

This is roughly the center of the city. Typical, from the other - you can not distinguish.

By the way, cars here also go along the pavement. At first glance, it's beautiful. But, firstly, it's loud, and, secondly, in some places you can't see where the road is, where the sidewalk is.

Greenery on the walls - the Czechs love it very much.

As always - a lot of familiar words.

In fact - every minute some kind of attraction. Because there are so many of them, they are quite unremarkable.

But the building on the left seemed to me somehow industrial, or something. By the way, be sure to pay attention to where the water flows through the sewer. Not on the sidewalk, it would spoil it (in Russia, under the sewers, there are often holes punched by drops), but immediately into the sewer hatch. By the way, it is a frequent phenomenon, although not everywhere. In Podebrady, for example, pipes are built right into the pavement, covered with bars (which, in turn, are clogged with leaves), and also lead to manholes.

By the way, here's the sign. such a shabby one. It amuses me that the little man wears a hat. Here, by the way, this is a frequent detail on the legend. I have not seen a Czech in a hat for 4 months.

Particularly in the city, I was pleased with the places in which there is a beautiful view of the “beautiful far away”.

Every self-respecting city has a store with Russian goods. Such stores are most often opened by people from Ukraine 🙂 It is always expensive there.

Here, too, there are two-faced houses - from a busy street a house is beautiful, from an unlively one - it crumbles.

And the sights keep popping up.

But I still love it when it is clear that the person who built the building loved his job. Every little thing gives it away.

By the way, it is worth mentioning the street signs - they are cute, it's a pity that the shape is very simple. The lower font, by the way, is hard to see on the go.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in such a house?

Found this one, but only one. With a tall tree. Which will stick out right in your window.

Still, the feeling of beauty is not alien here. It's crooked, but at least we tried.

And then this place attracted me. Pay attention to the deer on the top left. Well, it's cool.

It's autumn here, it's very beautiful.

And here you can see the wonders of graffiti.

Not in vain wrapped up, in general.

By the way, there are often such bins with garbage on the streets. Residents roll them out on schedule. Their big disadvantage is that sometimes they block the entire passage.

Here the man could not resist and painted and painted everything. By the way, you need to read line by line, although you want to read columns.

Without realizing it, they came back to the center. A riot of colors, an even bigger riot of prices 🙂

And someone didn't care at all. Very tired, by the way, this pink paint.

There are already more people.

In the article he spoke about the plague column - here it is also there.

By that time, I was already tired of walking, so according to the plan, it was decided to go to the famous sights of the city.

Ossuary.

A place that everyone knows about. In short - the uncle dug up the bones of people and made souvenirs from them. It turned out to equip the whole building.

They are real.

There are many of them. 4 such piles.

They are everywhere, even on the ceiling.

They even made a coat of arms.

To enhance the surroundings, the web is not removed.

In fact, it's not as scary as it seems.

But on the street and prettier and scarier. Right there is a graveyard. Quite a working one, there are even fresh graves. There, it doesn't feel right there.

You don't notice buildings like this over time.

Nearby there is a place with cheap beer, by the way. It's strange, there are tourists there.

Cathedral of Saint Mary.

Then they came to the cathedral. High.

Well, suddenly someone will be interested. I don't know who reads these things.

Inside is empty, just.

Attention to the head. Carlson?

There are no miracles in the temple, so you have to protect it with quite human strength.

Like in the movies, except you can't enter.

The stones are falling. They said they were original. Not really.

I'm kidding everyone here, but it seems that there is something to see.

You just have to raise your head.

And try to look where the arrows do not point.

Have you seen the organ?

A spiral staircase was seen. You must admit, it is always curious to climb into such places.

In general, there are very few miracles.

But my curiosity was satisfied - well, where else would I climb under the roof of the temple with impunity?

There is still something magical in these stained glass windows. Well, for me.

It's very empty inside, though.

The ventilation is working.

Here is a hole in the wall. I would be interested to know its purpose, and not those statues or pebbles. But such things are rarely talked about - even people do not see them.

Well, in general, when the place is unpopular. There is a time to look for something beautiful that has not been found before you. I really liked this angle.

On this, in principle, everything. Forces were no longer enough, it was getting dark. Therefore, I say goodbye to readers, I hope that my photo tours were not boring 🙂

Traveling around the Czech Republic alone is not comme il faut. This country was created for couples and fun companies. Peeking into the secret corners of castles, shamelessly drinking them… All this is more interesting to do, keeping at least two or three like-minded people in sight.

Where to get them? You can bring your own, or you can get it on the spot. A guided tour is just the right occasion. Where are we going? To Kutna Hora! Soulful place.

Do not want to make a detailed plan for an independent trip? Searching Yandex for the coordinates of sights, writing out museum schedules in a diary? And it is not necessary! You don't have to spend money on a personal guide either. During a group excursion to Kutná Hora, you can slowly remove all ... responsibility and see the city in comfort.

It remains to discuss the details: what time we start, what we will see on the road, where we will have lunch and when we will return to the hotel.

How much does it cost when we go and other org. questions

Anything made of glass. To do this, you will have to run into "Tashyce" - the local glass-blowing factory. Within its walls, you can play glass blower and try to create something worthy yourself. In the event of a fiasco, a souvenir shop at the factory will come to the rescue.

Excursion to Kutná Hora: opinions of eyewitnesses and accomplices

A few reviews from those who have already known all the delights of group trips from Prague to cities and villages:

Polina (27 years old, Vladivostok):

“First we stopped at Czech Sternberg, then we saw the Ossuary. Further - an overview of the city with a guide and 2 hours at our disposal. In our free time, we quickly stocked up on gothic cups and plates, took pictures and went to dinner. At the hotel, a neighbor suggested we go to Pivnice Dačický, so lunch was an important part of the program. We were quickly served (when you have an hour left before departure - this is critical), we managed to eat meat and drink local beer. We ordered, of course, Kutna Hora - delicious!”

Denis (29 years old, Samara):

“We decided to go to Kutna Hora out of boredom. We went to the Ossuary, to the Cathedral of St. Barbara, and in our free time we just walked along the streets. We looked into local shops, bought food in cafes, took pictures. The city is very quiet, calm, it is conducive to such walks. We did not regret that we did not rush around the remaining museums. Feeling the character of the city is sometimes more important than scribbling a million reviews on TripAdvisor upon your return. Tour guide Tatiana - thank you!”

Ignat (33 years old, Moscow):

“Children rushed to the Ossuary, but somehow I'm not very attracted to ossuaries. Therefore, we chose the tour in such a way as to please everyone. Our bus first went to Kutná Hora, and in the evening took us to Konopiste Castle. There my wife and I compensated for our suffering in Kostnitsa: my sons and I looked at weapons for hunting, and she studied collections of paintings, porcelain and exquisite furniture.

There are many attractions in the capital of the Czech Republic that you can explore on your own or with a guide. An excursion from Prague can be purchased at a reasonable price, and it will enrich your knowledge about this country. Kutna Hora is a fascinating place where all tourists aspire to. This historical part of the city, where medieval monuments have been preserved, is under the protection of UNESCO.

The main attractions are available to you for inspection: the Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbarians, the Royal Mint and the Ossuary Chapel. The narrow streets of the ancient city will give a zest to the walk - they will recreate the atmosphere of the medieval era.

The architecture of the church of St. Varvara resembles the appearance of the Cathedral of St. Vita in Prague. On his example, one can trace all the stages of the development of Gothic architecture in the Czech Republic, because the Cathedral of St. Varvara was built for a very long time and with large temporary breaks. Valuable frescoes with a mountain theme (Saint Barbara, the patroness of miners), unique paintings depicting medieval coinage have been preserved here. By the way, the Cathedral of St. Varvara is the second largest church in the Czech Republic.

On the territory of Kutná Hora there is Ossuary - the famous chapel at the cemetery. The tradition of keeping the bones of the dead in chapels was common in medieval Europe. But in this temple, the bones are not just stored, they are used for, as part of the interior decoration - in a peculiar way telling those who come in about the frailty of life. It is interesting that from the bones, and there were about 40,000 burials in the chapel, it was possible to create not only a new interior in the Gothic style, but also, for example, the Schwarzenberg family coat of arms.

Taking a walk around Kutná Hora, you will get great pleasure from visiting the Mint, and you will even get a “Prague penny” as a keepsake. The exposition of the local museum is very interesting. Old Czech coins and medals are exhibited here, and the process of medieval forging is demonstrated.

In one of the options for excursion programs in Kutná Hora, you can additionally visit another interesting historical site - the Czech Sternberg Castle. You could hear about the Gothic castle Czech Sternberg of the famous German family only in enthusiastic tones. Along with Karlštejn Castle, this "magnificent palace" is the oldest in the Czech Republic. It was erected in the 13th century on a high cliff of the Sazava River. The descendants of the former owners live here today and are kind to the family nest. On the tour you will be told in detail the history of the castle, they will show you the old coat of arms. And you will be imbued with respect for the Europeans, who know how to be proud of their family tree and preserve traditions.

If you have been, for example, in the castle, you can compare its interiors with the halls of the Sternberg Palace, also decorated with rich relief carvings, exquisite ornaments, sculptures and hunting trophies. Only here it is not wood that dominates, but marble, porcelain and Venetian glass. The refined taste of the owners of Sternberg Castle is manifested in everything - in the collection of silver miniatures, smoking pipes.

Fans of legends will hear many stories on the tour that excite the imagination. The main plot is dedicated to the legend of the hidden gold.
