The pattern on the glass indicates poor thermal insulation. That is why there are no frost patterns on modern sealed plastic windows.
Interestingly, the patterns are divided into two types:
- dendrites - like trees;
- trichites are fibrous patterns similar to fern leaves.
Dendrites form when the air humidity is high, when the temperature gradually begins to decrease. In this case, water accumulates at the bottom of the window. Here, at first, large branches are formed, which become thinner and thinner upwards.
For the formation of trichites, there must be irregularities, small scratches or dust particles on the window. Then ice crystals use them as a basis for the formation of thin fibers extending in both directions from a thicker stem. Since usually there are always specks of dust or scratches on the glass, it is more common to see trichites in winter.
How to avoid patterning
To prevent frosty patterns from covering the glass, it is necessary to reduce the humidity of the air. To do this, the hostesses put a glass or other container with salt between wooden frames. Salt is a good moisture absorber.
Another method is to prevent the glass from getting too cold. This is achieved through good thermal insulation at the junction of the outer glass with the frame. For this, the installation site of the glass is coated with a transparent sealant and then glazing beads are nailed.

Plastic windows have better thermal insulation properties than wooden windows, so the temperature of the glass on the inside is higher. Consequently, condensation with crystallization is worse. Simply put - old wooden windows "breathe" and cold enters the apartments, and patterns are formed from the temperature drop.
Old wooden windows are double frames with single glazing without glass packages. The frames are not sealed, between them (and therefore between the glasses) there is ordinary room air, on the cold glass there are processes of moisture condensation and crystallization. And PVC windows are used - two or three glass, hermetically glued. Between the glass panes, not humid room air, but dry, free from dust and moisture, or an inert gas. So it turns out that there is nothing to condense on the coldest outer glass - there is no moisture in the chamber of the double-glazed unit, and no patterns form on the inner glass, since it is too warm.
There is another reason: old wooden windows, as a rule, are "dirtier" than PVC windows, that is, there is more dust on the surface of such glass, namely, water crystallizes on dust particles.
If ice patterns appear on PVC windows, this means that the windows are not installed quite correctly, they are not properly sealed with a special rubber band, the glass unit is not airtight ...
