The structure of the exam in the GIA format in English
GIA in English is conducted in the format of the main state exam (OGE), which includes tasks in a standardized form.
The OGE in English consists of written and oral parts.
The written part is divided into four sections: "Listening", "Reading", "Grammar and Vocabulary", "Writing". The written part of the exam will take 120 minutes.
Section 1. Listening
This section includes three parts (8 tasks). Time to complete - 30 minutes.
Task number 1. The purpose of this task is to determine the place in which this dialogue can take place: a cinema, a park, a hotel, a hospital, etc. It is important to remember that there is one redundant answer.
Task number 2. In the course of this assignment, the examinee needs to match each speaker with the thought he / she expressed.
For example, he / she describes the school library or his / her classroom. This task also contains one extra answer.
Tasks number 3-8. These tasks are aimed at understanding details and specific information in a monologue / dialogue. In these tasks, there are three possible answers to the question. The examinee must choose the option that corresponds to what he heard. For example, indicate with whom the hero is traveling or what souvenir he bought.
The maximum score is -15.
Section 2. Reading
This section is divided into two parts.
Task number 9 consists of seven short texts and eight headings. The examinee needs to match each text with the appropriate heading that best reflects the main idea of the text. 1 heading is superfluous.
Tasks # 10-17 are aimed at understanding the narrative text. After the text, 8 statements are presented. The examinee needs to establish whether the statement is true (True), false (False) or the text says nothing about it (Notstated).
Section 3. Grammar and vocabulary
This section consists of 9 tasks aimed at forming the correct grammatical form of a word and 6 tasks for the lexical transformation of words.
The maximum number of points for completing this section is 15 (1 point for each correct answer).
Section 4. Written speech
This section is represented by one task, in which the examinee needs to write a letter of a personal nature in response to the provided letter from a "friend".
This assignment is assessed according to the following criteria:
Solving a communicative task (full answers to the questions asked, the correctness of the address used, the final phrase, signature, gratitude, mention of previous contacts, expression of hope for an answer letter);
Organization of the text (the logic of constructing the text, division into paragraphs, the correct use of linguistic and logical means of communication, the correspondence of the letter to the norms of written etiquette);
Lexico-grammatical design of the text (correct use of a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures (no more than two language mistakes are allowed));
Spelling and punctuation (no spelling or punctuation errors (no more than two errors are allowed)).
The letter should contain between 100 and 120 words. The recommended time to complete this section of the OGE is 30 minutes. The maximum score is -10.
Section 5. Speaking
The oral part is represented by three types of speaking tasks:
Task number 1. Reading aloud a short text of a popular science character.
The examinee is given 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then it is necessary to read the text aloud in 2 minutes. The maximum number of points for this task is 2.
The assignment is evaluated according to the following criteria:
Speech is perceived easily and clearly;
There are no unreasonable pauses;
No more than five phonetic errors are allowed, including one or two errors that distort the meaning.
Task number 2. Participation in a conditional questioning dialogue (answers to the questions asked).
During this task, the examinee must answer 6 questions heard in the audio recording on a specific topic (sports, school, healthy lifestyle, etc.). Questions are asked in the format of a telephone public opinion survey. The answer to each question should not take more than 40 seconds. Each answer is worth 1 point, provided that:
The answer is given;
The answer is not a single word or phrase;
There are no errors in the answer that make it difficult to understand.
The maximum number of points for this task is 6.
Task number 3. Thematic monologue statement with verbal support in the text of the assignment.
1.5 minutes are given to prepare for this task. The monologue should last no more than 2 minutes (10-12 phrases). The maximum score for this task is 7.
In this task, the examinee must give a monologue statement on a specific topic, taking into account the criteria presented in the task.
This type of assignment is assessed according to the following criteria:
Solution of a communicative task (a detailed statement is provided that fully reveals the given topic and accurately reveals the three aspects indicated in the assignment);
Organization of the utterance (the utterance must be logical and complete; the use of logical communication means (linking words); the presence of introductory and concluding phrases);
Linguistic design of the utterance (rich vocabulary, correct grammatical and phonetic design of the utterance).
The oral response time is 15 minutes per one respondent. The maximum score for the oral part is 15. The maximum score for successfully passing the OGE in English is 70 points.
Compulsory state exams are becoming more and more difficult every year, requiring graduates of the 9th grade to have deep, thorough knowledge of the main subjects of the school curriculum.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, ninth-graders will have to take a total of 4 final exams, of which 2 will be compulsory (Russian language and mathematics), and 2 more students will have the opportunity to choose at their own discretion from the list of approved subjects. The optional exam includes:
- history;
- physics;
- chemistry;
- computer science;
- biology;
- geography;
- literature;
- Social Studies;
- foreign languages (English, French, German or Spanish).
Knowing what compulsory tests are included in the OGE, you will be able to pull up the necessary subjects from successfully passing the exams in 2019 by entering the desired educational institutions or specialized classes.
Important! For many ninth-graders, the OGE will become not just the result of studying in high school, but also the first step towards the desired profession, because in 2019 exam scores will affect the certificate, and recommended passing scores have been set for specialized classes.
Schedule of the OGE in 2019
Starting in 2018, a compulsory oral part of the Russian language exam will be introduced for 9th grade graduates. Speaking will be the first test for schoolchildren and at the same time a kind of admission to the rest of the exams. They plan to receive speaking in February (before the start of the preliminary and main campaign).
There is no official schedule for the OGE yet, but today we can assume that the campaign will take place in three stages:
- Preliminary (late April - early May).
- Main (late May - early June).
- Optional (September 2019).

Expected changes
So, we figured out how many and what subjects ninth graders have to take in 2019. But what can kids expect from tickets? What will the tasks be?
The Ministry of Education and Science assures that they are quite satisfied with the level of tickets for the 2017-2018 academic year and do not plan any major changes. Whether this is so with certainty it will be possible to say when the graduation campaign is over and the results are summed up.
In 2019, such innovations of 2017 and 2018 will definitely remain, such as:
- speaking Russian;
- oral part at the OGE in foreign languages;
- uniform tickets in mathematics for all educational institutions and all regions of the Russian Federation;
- compulsory video surveillance in the classrooms where the exams will be held.
In the upcoming 2019 year, 9th grade students will take both compulsory OGE subjects and optional disciplines based on their schools!
Most likely, KIMs for the OGE in compulsory and additional subjects in 2019 will receive minor changes aimed at more accurate adjustment of questions and replacement of some controversial tasks (if any will be revealed after passing the exams in 2018).
The probability of increasing the passing threshold for entering specialized classes is considered. But, today, this selection criterion is rather advisory in nature. In 2017-2018, the minimum scores were distributed as follows:

Retake procedure
The required exams for ninth graders are not just a snapshot of knowledge. The issue of issuing certificates depends on the results that children receive in the course of completing the assignments.
In 2019, the right to retake can be used if:
- The child was unable to attend the exam for a good reason (documentary evidence is required).
- The student showed up for the test, but did not complete it for a good reason.
- The job was canceled by the HEC (but not through the fault of the student).
- The examinee received an unsatisfactory mark in a compulsory subject.
- When filing an appeal and satisfying it after consideration by the conflict commission.
A student is not allowed to retake if:
- The exam was missed without good reason.
- The child was suspended from work due to his own fault (behavior disorder, use of cheat sheets, unauthorized technical means, etc.).
- The examinee has "failed" both compulsory exams or more than 2 subjects.

Preparation
The most important component of the successful passing of the GIA is always the systematic study of the subject throughout all the years of schooling. If, from the 5th to the 8th grade, some gaps in knowledge have formed, it's time to fill them up by starting intensive preparation for the final exams.
Where to begin?
- Find out what exams your 9th grade will take and how many subjects are submitted for final certification in 2019.
- Review the theoretical foundations in the selected disciplines.
- Practice as much as possible in solving tests and problems, working through trial versions of OGE tickets for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Most schools organize additional classes to prepare for the final exams. If there are none, and the need for teacher's help is obvious, it is worth considering the option of group or individual lessons with a tutor.
