Reach what peaks. The highest mountains on earth. Mont Blanc mountain range, Alps

The Saturday market is one of the city's attractions and it is absolutely impossible to miss it, especially if you are in Chiang Mai only for a week and next Saturday you will not be able to get here.

Every Saturday Wualai rd. turns into a pedestrian from 16-00 to 22-30. Saturday market takes place near War Sri Suphan Silver Temple.

On the map, Saturday walking street is circled in green, and Sunday walking street is circled in purple.

opening hours: 16:00 - 22:30 (every Saturday)
Location: Wualai Rd (South of Old City, starts from Chiang Mai gate)

As in any weekend market, it is not crowded here - the streets are packed with both merchants and buyers.

Even if you don't need souvenirs, at the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai you can find truly original handicrafts that will decorate you, your home. Craftsmen from all over the city and its environs bring amazing fruits of their labors here. Clothes, fabrics, dishes, leather goods, watches, posters, figure cutting frames, etc.

And the food! What a sensation here! For every taste, wallet, size. Fried, steamed, boiled, stewed, for vegans, for meat eaters, seafood at very reasonable prices! In general, there are few places to find such prices as in Chiang Mai in all of Thailand.

I want to try everything! Therefore, personal advice - take one dish for two and for three - so there is a chance to test more)

I would recommend buying and bringing home from Thailand something to remember from the Saturday or Sunday markets of Chiang Mai. Firstly, there are a lot of exclusive things that cannot be found in other cities of the country, and secondly, tseeeen - they are very tasty here!

Vualai street. famous for its artisans who migrated here from Burma many years ago. On both sides of the road, here and there, you can find "silver" shops offering goods made of pure (92.2%) silver. Exquisite handicrafts, represented by jewelry, tableware and sets, as well as home decor items.
In addition to silver, there are several shops selling gold, made in the form of jewelry, decoration of vases and cups, etc.
There are a lot of wood products, mainly home decor presets, figurines, women's bracelets, masks and all sorts of knickknacks. Other stalls are filled with handmade shoes, including a nursery, dresses, T-shirts, pocket and wristwatches, paintings, toys and funny souvenirs, knives and decorative metal products, leather wallets and purses, knitting and spa cosmetics .... in general, the selection is quite large. and you will have to spend more than one hour before you find the thing you need.

There are many markets in Chiang Mai selling all sorts of things, from groceries to clothing and other accessories. Moreover, some markets are not stationary, but appear on a specially fenced off street only on certain days, for example, Saturdays or Sundays. In the markets you can find Thai hand-made, which is brought from all over the province. There are some pretty funny things.

Prices in Chiang Mai markets are quite normal, especially on weekends. But in the southern part of Thailand, it seemed to me that on Wallking Street on Koh Samui and in Ao Nang everything was the same or more expensive than if I took it somewhere else nearby. However, I mainly compared food. After all, every market is primarily Thai fast food :)

The list shows the main markets as well as all the markets in the center. There are, of course, other markets on the outskirts.

Market nameWhat to buyOpening hours and location
Night marketClothes, bags, mostly factory-made, but there are also handicrafts (paintings, souvenirs and carvings in the central trading building). Fakes of well-known brands: watches, T-shirts and mobile devices. Lots of bars, cafes and restaurants.From 19:00 to 24:00 daily. Located along Chang Khlan road.
Saturday marketInteresting handicrafts: souvenirs, clothes, bags, shoes, paintings, rice paper lamps, toys, wood carvings, etc.Every Saturday at Wua Lai road.
Sunday marketSimilar to Saturday market, with a slight difference: the selection of handicrafts is larger, but prices for some items may be higher. Sellers explain that this market is the most popular and attracts many tourists. Just like in other markets, you can try to bargain.From 16:00 to 22:00 Every Sunday, at the Thapae Gate.
Muang Mai marketThe largest grocery market in the city, spanning several blocks, not far from the waterfront. The prices are the lowest, there is a wide selection. Locals buy here for themselves, both retail and wholesale for their hotels and restaurants.Round the clock.
Warorot marketThey sell a variety of goods: watches, bags, gold, clothes and shoes, household appliances, etc., as well as vegetables and fruits. The part of the market located in the building is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Later, in the dark, street food and clothing vendors deploy.Round the clock. Located in Chinatown, Chinatown.
Thanin (or Siri Wattana market)Small food covered market. Vegetables, fruits, sweets, baked goods, ready meals, meat. The prices for some products are normal, for some they can be grossly overpriced. The quality of the fruit is lower (most of the watermelons, mangoes or bananas offered are not ripe).From 5:00 to 21:00
Chamni Norakan (or Somphet market)A small market for fresh vegetables and fruits. The choice is not great, but if you live in the center and for a short time, this market is the most successful for shopping for food. A strange phenomenon: prices are not stable - they can change quickly, both in one direction and in the other direction, depends not on the quality of the product, but on the holidays and the mood of the seller.From 6:00 to 18:00. Located on Moon Muang road lane 6, at the intersection of Mun Mueang Road.
Ton Lamyai marketA large selection of bouquets of freshly cut tropical and mountain flowers, the market is also called the "wet market", because there is always a lot of water on the ground, which flows from flowers after irrigation or along the local Gakht Dor Mai. Basically, flowers are offered at night, when there is no scorching sun, from which the flowers lose moisture.Opens in the evening after 18:00. Located near the Ping River.
MarketA small covered market located near the bus stop (cluster).
Meat and fish products.
Unknown
Market in the north of the squareLiterally a row of stalls along the street with food, fruits and vegetables. There are still many monks, they are given food. Only early in the morning, in the afternoon and evening, no one is there.Early in the morning, 6-7 am.
Market near TescoThe market is adjacent to Tesco and sells food and clothes such as T-shirts for 50 baht.Works in the evening and not every day.

Markets map

Not only markets are marked on the map, but also some shops and cafes. If you are interested in Chiang Mai hotels and guesthouses, I recommend the RoomGuru hotel booking service and ours in the historic city center (in the square).

Photos from the market

Mostly a photo from the Sunday Market, which is Sunday Market, because we visited it more often than anything.

In April of this year, one of the most tragic incidents in the entire history of the conquest of the mountain happened on Everest: as a result of an avalanche at an altitude of 5800 meters, 16 Sherpas-guides were killed. However, the highest peak in the world is not the most dangerous and difficult. Let's take a look at a list of the 25 most dangerous mountain peaks around the world.

Everest, Nepal / China

Everest, being the highest peak in the world, at the same time is not the most difficult to climb, but still quite dangerous. In the entire history of climbing on the slopes of the mountain, about 250 climbers have died. This year alone, an avalanche at an altitude of 5800 meters buried 16 Sherpa guides.

Fitz Roy, Argentina / Chile

Mount Fitz Roy on the border of Argentina and Chile is one of the most difficult peaks to climb for the obvious reason: the almost sheer slopes and unpredictable weather. The first ascent of Fitz Roy was made on February 2, 1952 by members of the French expedition Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone. They plotted a route along the Southeast Ridge.

McKinley, USA

Mount McKinley in Alaska is the highest peak in the United States and is popular with climbers due to its accessibility. However, for beginners, this peak is very dangerous, as evidenced by the death toll (about 100 people).

Matterhorn, Switzerland / Italy

Visually, the Matterhorn is one of the most striking and recognizable peaks in the world. Due to its steep slopes, it was conquered later than other alpine peaks: since 1857 there have been several unsuccessful ascents of the Matterhorn, mainly from the Italian side. The first successful attempt dates back to 1865. For a century and a half of climbing history, about 500 people died on the Matterhorn.

Makalu, Nepal / China

Makalu (pictured: a mountain with sun glare at the top), the fifth highest mountain in the world, is located just 12 km from Everest, on the border of Napal and China. The difficulty of climbing it lies in the fact that it is difficult to get to it. Now helicopters are used for this. Makalu is considered one of the most difficult peaks among the eight-thousanders. The conquest of the "Crown of the Earth" - the conquest of all 14 eight-thousanders of the planet - is a great achievement in high-altitude mountaineering. At the moment, only 30 climbers (27 men and 3 women) have succeeded.

Mont Blanc, France / Italy

Technically, Mont Blanc is not a difficult peak, which attracts a huge number of climbers of all levels to it. Perhaps that is why, according to various estimates, up to 8,000 people died on the slopes of Mont Blanc.

Chogori or K2, Pakistan / China

Chogori or K2 - the second highest peak in the world - is arguably the most difficult and deadly mountain on this list. For every four successful ascents of Chogori, there is one death. Expeditions to K2 go only during the summer season.

Cerro Torre, Argetina / Chile

Looking at the photograph of Cerro Torre, one can easily imagine why this summit is so difficult. Because of the strongest cold winds, the steep top of the mountain is often covered with a dense crust of ice. The first successful attempt to climb was made only in 1974.

Annapurna, Nepal

Annapurna was visited by only 157 people, about 60 more died before reaching the summit. Thus, the mortality rate on this mountain is 38%, which is even higher than that of K2. However, this is not the limit: Kanchenjunga has a higher mortality rate, but more about it. The southern slope of Annapurna is considered one of the most difficult routes to climb.

Eiger, Switzerland

The Eiger in Switzerland is notorious for its impregnable northern wall with a vertical drop of 1650 m. 64 people died on this slope alone. The first ascent of the Eiger was made in 1858.

Jannu, Nepal

Mount Jannu in the Nepalese Himalayas attracts the attention of climbers around the world as one of the most beautiful and difficult peaks in the Himalayas. The most difficult sections start after 7000 meters.

Logan, Canada

Mount Logan is the second highest peak in North America after McKinley and is included in the Seven Second Summits, which includes the second highest peaks on all seven continents. Some of these peaks are considered more challenging than their more eminent and taller rivals. That is only worth, for example, K2 (mentioned above). Although the climb to Logan itself is not more difficult than McKinley, before that climbers still have to go a long way to the bottom.

Dhaulagiri I, Nepal

The Dhaulagiri mountain range consists of 11 peaks, the main of which exceeds 8 km, the rest exceed 7 km. From 1808 to 1832, Dhaulagiri was considered the highest peak in the world, but climbers turned their attention to it only in the early 1950s. Only the eighth expedition was successful. Dhaulagiri I ranks seventh in the ranking of the highest peaks and has a higher mortality rate among the Himalayan mountains of comparable height. Since 1950, 58 climbers have died on the mountain.

Gauri Shankar, Nepal / China

Gauri Shankar is located not far from his neighbor Melungtse. Since it is ascended from the side of Nepal, and not Tibet, it has accepted more climbers. As in Melungtse, the ascent to Gauri Shankar is extremely difficult.

Siula Grande, Peru

The summit of Siula Grande, located in the Peruvian Andes, is best known for the book "Touching the Void" by climber Joe Simpson. The book tells the story of two young British climbers who, in 1985, set out to conquer Siula Grande along a route that no one had yet traveled. In 2003, a documentary was made based on this exciting book.

Banntha Brakk, Pakistan

Only three expeditions reached the summit of this mountain in the Karakorum mountain range. It is known as one of the most difficult peaks in the world: as many as 24 years passed between the first successful ascent in 1977 and the next one in 2001. For the difficulty of climbing and the high mortality rate, the mountain received the nickname "cannibal".

Vinson Massif, Antarctica

Climbing Vinson is not too difficult, but the problem is that it is the highest peak in Antarctica. The existence of this mountain range became known only in 1957, when it was discovered by American planes. The highest point - Vinson Peak (4892 m) is part of the Seven Summits climbing project.

Cerro Paine Grande, Chile

The summit of Cerro Paine Grande is part of the Cordillera del Paine mountain range in Chile. As in the case of Fitz Roy, the difficulty of the climb lies in the sheer cliffs and unpredictable weather.

Lhotse, Nepal / China

Lhotse is directly connected to Everest and is considered the fourth highest peak. Lhotse has recorded nearly 400 successful ascents and 20 deaths. Climbing Lhotse is not that difficult: at least one tour operator offers a package that includes climbing both peaks in one expedition.

Melungtse, Nepal / China

The only successful attempt to climb Melungtse was recorded in 1992, but to a greater extent not because of the difficulty of the ascent, but because of the difficulty of obtaining permission from the Tibetan authorities.

Gasherbrum IV, Pakistan / China

This peak in the Karakorum massif, due to its very steep slopes and unstable weather, is considered one of the most technically difficult peaks to climb.

Kuyten-Uul, Mongolia / China

Kuyten-Uul is the highest point of the Tavan-Bogdo-Ula mountain range, located at the junction of the Mongolian Altai and the Southern Altai and Sailugem ranges in Altai. She earned her place on this list thanks to its remoteness, and not the technical complexity of the ascent.

Nanga Parbat, Pakistan

Mount Nanga Parbat was dubbed "the eater of people." For the first time it was possible to conquer it only in 1953, and many subsequent attempts ended tragically. The peculiarity of the ascent to Nanga Parbat is that part of the ascent from all sides is made up of sheer walls, the length of one of which, called Rupalskaya, reaches 4600 meters - this is the longest wall in the world. Nanga Parbat never conquered in winter.

St. Elias, USA / Canada

Mount St. Elias (Saint Elias), located on the Yukon-Alaska border, has not been spoiled for climbers due to the dire weather conditions that make it difficult to climb most of the year. Due to the fact that the summit is only 10 miles from the ocean, it is prone to frequent Pacific storm winds.

Kanchenjunga, India / Nepal

Until 1852, Kanchenjunga was considered the highest mountain in the world, but calculations carried out after the 1849 expedition showed that Everest is higher, and Kanchenjunga is the third highest peak. Despite the global trend of decreasing mortality during mountain climbing, this rule does not work in the case of Kanchenjanga. In recent years, the number of tragic cases has increased to 22% and is not going to fall. In Nepal, there is a legend that Kanchenjunga is a mountain woman, and she kills all women who try to climb its top. The only woman who managed to climb to the summit and descend back was for a long time British climber Jeanette Harrison, who conquered the Main Summit in 1998. A year and a half later, she died while climbing Dhaulagiri. In 2008, the Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner ascended the highest point of one of the most beautiful mountains of the Himalayas, in 2009 the Spaniard Edurne Pasaban, the Polish Kinga Baranowska and the Korean O Eun Son.

Mount Everest, which is also called Chomolungma, is located on the border of Nepal and China. This mountain is the highest peak in the world, topping the list of the tallest mountains in the world, at 8848 meters above sea level. Climbing it is a real dream for many climbers, but at the same time it is considered very dangerous, because in attempts to climb this mountain, a large number of people died.

What is the highest peak of the earth

The highest peak in the world is a peak that is higher in relation to other mountains, and the height is measured from sea level. The last value means the position of the free surface of the World Ocean, which is measured along a plumb line with respect to some conventional reference point. This position depends on a number of factors, for example, temperature, the law of gravitation, the moment of rotation of the Earth, etc. It turns out that the largest mountain in the world is Everest.

What are the highest mountains in the world

Today there is a list of seven mountains, which includes the highest peaks of the six parts of the world, and Europe and Asia are considered separately from each other:

  • in Asia, it is Chomolungma;
  • in South America - Aconcagua;
  • in North America - Denali (formerly McKinley);
  • in Africa - Kilimanjaro;
  • in Europe - Elbrus;
  • in Antarctica - Vinson Peak;
  • in Australia and Oceania - Jaya, and the last peak is located in the Indonesian part of New Guinea, although in Australia the highest is Mount Kosciushko.

It should be added that the highest mountains in the world (TOP-100) are located in Asia, in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Karakorum and other areas adjacent to them. Today there is even an informal association "The Seven Summits Club", consisting of climbers who have conquered the highest peaks of seven continents. The ranking of the ten highest mountains (eight-thousanders) on the planet is as follows:

  1. Chomolungma - 8848 m.
  2. Chogori - 8611 m.
  3. Kanchenjunga - 8586 m.
  4. Lhotse - 8516 m.
  5. Makalu - 8485 m.
  6. Cho-Oyu - 8188 m.
  7. Dhaulagiri - 8167 m.
  8. Manaslu - 8163 m.
  9. Nangaparbat - 8126 m.
  10. Annapurna I - 8091 m.

Highest point in Europe

The highest point of the continent is Mount Elbrus, which is located in the Greater Caucasus between two constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia. It is a two-peaked saddle-shaped volcano cone: the western peak reaches an altitude of 5642 m and the eastern one - 5621 m. The last eruption took place around the 50s of our era. This mountain peak is covered with glaciers with an area of 134.5 km2. The first documented ascent to this greatest peak in Europe dates back to 1829 - it was made by the expedition of General G.A. Emmanuel.

There are several options for conquering this peak, for example, it can be an ascent along the eastern route (ridge), starting from Elbrus (village) and passing through the Irikchat gorge, through a pass, a glacier, and so on to the beginning of the ridge. The northern route allows you to see truly incredible beauty - the hills are replaced by stones and rocks of bizarre shapes. The most popular is the ascent from the south, and the extreme one is from the west, because along the way, there are powerful rocky walls, heavy climbs and glaciers.

Highest peak in Africa

The most famous and famous mountain of the African continent is the volcano Kilimanjaro - 5895 m. It is located in the north-east of Tanzania. It is noteworthy that the stratovolcano has an ice cap that is actively melting - over the past century, the glacier has decreased by 80%. It consists of three main peaks. Hans Meyer first managed to conquer this volcano in 1889. The climb to Kilimanjaro cannot be called technically difficult, but at the same time it is considered spectacular.

Highest point in North America

The highest peak in the North American continent is Denali - a two-headed mountain, which until 2015 was called McKinley, and at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Great Mountain. Mount McKinley is located in the south of central Alaska. The first to reach the summit were American climbers under the command of Hudson Glass in 1913. The name Denali belongs to the natives of Alaska - the Athabasca Indians. The mountain rises at an altitude of 6190 m above sea level.

Highest mountain in South America

In the list of seven peaks, Aconcagua is in second place in height - 6962 m. It is itself the highest mountain peak of the South America continent. Aconcagua is located in the Andes Mountains in Argentina. For the first time it was possible to conquer it in 1897 - the first documented ascent was made by an expedition led by Edward Fitzgerald.

The ascent to Aconcagua is considered technically easy if you make it along the northern slope. This large hill is covered with snow and many glaciers. According to some sources, its name is translated from the Araucano language as "comes from the other side." According to another version, it could come from the Quechua language and means "white guard" or "stone guard".

The highest peak of Antarctica

Vinson Peak reaches a height of 4892 m, located in the Ellsworth mountain range, 1200 km from the South Pole. The summit was discovered by US pilots in 1957. There were several attempts to ascend, but for the first time it was possible to ascend only in 1966 - Nicholas Clinch. Over the past few years, Vinson Massif has received quite a bit of attention from well-funded climbers. The climb itself involves not so many technical difficulties, but your stay in Antarctica is an unsafe undertaking.

Australia's highest peak

Punchak Jaya or Carstens Pyramid is the tallest mountain in Australia and Oceania. It rises 4884 m above sea level. Punchak Jaya is located on the Maoke massif in the western part of the island of New Guinea. The name is translated from Indonesian as "victory". The first ascent to the summit was made only in 1962, it was carried out by a group of Australian climbers, led by Heinrich Harrer.

Highest peak on earth

Most people know that the highest point on earth is located in South Asia, or more precisely, in the central Himalayas on the border of China and Nepal. During the conquest of Everest, many climbers died. The fact that Chomolungma is the highest mountain on the planet was determined back in 1852 by the Indian topographer and mathematician Radhanat Sikdar. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay managed to conquer Chomolungma through the South Col. Before that, about 50 expeditions to the Karakorum and the Himalayas were carried out.

The ascent to this peak is extremely difficult and often ends in the death of the climbers. This is due to the poor climatic conditions of the uppermost zone of the mountain: high rarefaction of the atmosphere, low temperatures down to -50-60 degrees, periodic hurricane winds, etc. In addition, other dangers await climbers, including:

  • the possibility of falling into the crevices of the relief;
  • cliff from steep slopes;
  • avalanches.

Mount Everest

The highest peak in the world reaches a height of 8848 m. It has the shape of a triangular pyramid, with the southern slope being steeper. Glaciers flow down from the massif in all directions, the boundary of which ends at an altitude of about 5 km. Today Everest belongs to the Sagarmatha National Park, located in Nepalese territory. The last 300 m are considered to be the most difficult area for climbing this peak. To successfully pass them, climbers need to overcome a very steep and smooth slope of Everest.

Where is

The southern summit of Everest (8760 m) is located on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region (China), and the northern (8848 m), which is the main one, is located entirely on Chinese territory. Climbing the mountain, taking into account acclimatization and setting up the camp, often takes about two months. Climbers can lose about 10-15 kg in one ascent. For the opportunity to climb from climbers take a lot of money, while the sequence of ascent is established.

Climate and the reason for the formation of Everest

This peak is characterized by very strong winds, the speed of which can reach 200 km / h. As for the air temperature, the average monthly indicator in July is about 0 ° C, and in January -36 ° C, although on some nights it can even reach -60 ° C. The history of the formation of Chomolungma dough is associated with the formation of the Himalayas. About 50-55 million years ago, the Indian and Eurasian plates began to collide with each other, as a result of which the latter was strongly deformed. This is how the mountain belt appeared, the highest part of which was the Himalayas.
