How to connect a digital set-top box to an old monitor. How to connect a monitor to a digital TV set-top box. Possible connection options

Technique, especially computer technology, tends to become obsolete, and recently it has been happening at a very fast pace. Old monitors may no longer be needed by anyone, and it will be very problematic to sell them. You can breathe a second life into an elderly LCD display by making a regular TV out of it for use in everyday life, for example, in the kitchen. In this article, we'll talk about how to turn a computer monitor into a TV.

In order to solve the problem, we do not need a computer, but we will have to purchase some hardware. This is, first of all, a TV tuner or set-top box, as well as a set of cables for connecting an antenna. The antenna itself is also needed, but only if cable TV is not used.

Tuner selection

When choosing such devices, you need to pay attention to the set of ports for connecting a monitor and acoustics. On the market you can find tuners with VGA, HDMI and DVI connectors. If the "monik" is not equipped with its own speakers, then you will also need a line-out for headphones or speakers. Please note that audio transmission is only possible with an HDMI connection.

Connection

The configuration of the tuner, monitor and speaker system is quite easy to assemble.

Conclusion

As you can see, making a TV from an old "Monica" is quite easy, you just need to find a suitable tuner in stores. Be careful when choosing a device, as not all of them are suitable for this purpose.

There are situations when we need another TV, but we cannot buy it for many reasons. Then the question arises - is it possible to use a monitor as a TV? Or is it possible to connect a TV set-top box to the monitor?

If you have an old computer monitor, then it is quite possible to use it as a TV. This transformation is achieved in several ways. The simplest of them, you guessed it, is to connect the monitor to a set-top box. You do not need a system unit, keyboard, mouse and various cords for them. You need nothing more than to connect the monitor to a digital TV set-top box directly and use it only as a TV screen.

Connecting the set-top box to the monitor

Buying and connecting a DVB-T2 set-top box to a monitor is a reliable way to miraculously transform a computer display into a television receiver. Modern displays, like TVs, are equipped with built-in speakers and are almost a stand-alone device. But if you have a regular monitor (perhaps even a tube one), then you will need separate speakers - you connect them to the corresponding connector on the DVB-T2 decoder. It's great if they come with stereo sound. If desired, you can purchase speakers on the remote control.

An external digital set-top box is an independent device that connects to an electrical network, a TV antenna and a monitor. It is controlled with a remote control, like a regular TV.

The situation with DVB-T2 receivers is such that the manufacturer did not intend to connect them to computer monitors, but only to TVs. At the same time, new monitors, like modern TV sets, are equipped with an HDMI connector, which is present on set-top boxes, while old ones can only be found VGA and DVI-D.

The options for connecting it to a digital television set-top box will depend on which connectors you find on the display. The following combinations are possible (see table).

How to connect a TV box to a monitor

If you already have a free display, and you want to purchase a set-top box for watching TV, then pay attention to a hybrid digital TV tuner equipped with both VGA and HDMI slots. If the design additionally includes jacks - "tulips", where you can connect speakers, then you are just lucky: you are the owner of a universal device compatible with various models of television equipment.

But what if you got a connection option with mismatched interfaces? Special adapters will come to the rescue, which are on sale in any electronics store or on a well-known Chinese trading platform. As for the latter, there you can find the most unexpected combinations of adapters. Some converters, being a full-fledged device with a board inside, require power supply. The other feature is the need for a separate audio signal output using an additional cable.

Another way to connect an old monitor to a digital set-top box is to use YPbPr or SCART jacks that work with an analog signal. To do this, you need an AV to VGA signal converter.

Pay attention to the characteristic such as the length of the connecting cable. Surely, you know how the length of the antenna coaxial wire affects the signal attenuation. So, there are requirements for the cables connecting the displays with the T2 decoder:

  • VGA - no longer than three meters;
  • HDMI - no longer than five meters;
  • DVI - not exceeding ten meters.

If, after connecting all the cables (do not forget about the antennas) and turning the devices into the network, the screen is empty or an error message appears, then this indicates a problem with one of the devices or cable incompatibility.

TV box connectors and ports

To understand which jacks are used to connect a DVB set-top box to a computer monitor, you need to get acquainted with the types of connectors that this type of gadgets is equipped with. It is noteworthy that depending on the class of the monitor and the year of manufacture of the set-top box, the set of connectors may differ. So take a close look at the back panel of your devices.

Antenna connector

Previously, it was the most important thing in our television sets: an analog TV antenna, a video player or a satellite TV tuner was connected to it. Today it is used to receive digital terrestrial television using a classic external antenna.

HDMI

The HDMI multimedia interface is the most important functional connector. It is responsible for the simultaneous transmission of digital video and audio. Sharing media does not result in loss of picture or sound quality. It is good regardless of the connected devices such as a monitor, camera, camera or player.

Euro / Scart

Thanks to it, outdated devices are compatible with more modern equipment. This is especially true when there is no HDMI connector. This connector has been in use for many years, but will soon be a thing of the past.

USB

USB is a connector with the ability to connect equipment such as a camera, webcam, flash drive, MP3 player, and even a smartphone. The USB input is determined by the version standard: the higher it is, the faster the transfer of multimedia from devices to the TV screen. Later receivers have a USB 3.0 version. Today, the USB connector is the main parameter of any TV.

VGA

VGA transfers video from external devices to a TV, such as a monitor to a TV screen. The connector is useful for legacy equipment that does not have an HDMI input (laptop or computer). Then VGA ensures device compatibility, allowing images to be transmitted.

DVI

DVI technology replaced VGA and was developed for connecting image display devices, the connector does not transmit an audio signal. The DVI and HDMI connectors are mutually compatible and can be combined with each other using the appropriate adapters.

Memory card reader

It serves to display multimedia on the TV screen of portable memory cards. More and more manufacturers offer this alternative and convenient solution - it is faster to use the reader directly, bypassing the USB port.

Ethernet / LAN

The Ethernet / LAN connector or local area network is the main function that provides the TV's connection to the Internet. Thanks to it, you can use a wired connection to access search engines, applications, services and all the online tools that Smart TV has.

Component input

Component input makes it possible to send a high-resolution analog image from other equipment directly to the viewing screen.

DVB T2 tuners are initially "sharpened" for connection to a TV set and for connection to a monitor are not designed. But recently, at the request, I took up the question of the possibility of connecting a monitor to a digital set-top box, and although I had to "break" my head a little, as a result, I managed to implement two schemes. Thus, you can extend the life of an old monitor or even a new one, but unused.

If the monitor had an RCA connector for AV connection, there would be no problems at all. New monitors are easier to connect, since they have an HDMI connector that consoles have, while old ones usually only have VGA and DVI-D.

HDMI and DVI-D are digital outputs with adequate signal quality and audio support. Hence, it is clear if the monitor has speakers, then you can immediately adjust the soundtrack. However, their sound quality leaves much to be desired, so when connecting the monitor to a digital set-top box, it is better to let the sound through the speaker system.

Acoustic system for connecting to a set-top box

In general, in this case, it is better to use an external system. To connect it, you need to purchase a cable

Digital Inputs - HDMI and DVI-D

To connect a monitor to a digital TV set-top box, you need to buy an HDMI to DVI-D adapter cable.

HDMI to DVI-D cable

However, problems may arise with the DVI-D output, and if the monitor does not start showing, look at the characteristics to it, the goal is to find out if its DVI-D input has HDCP support. HDCP is a technology to protect media content from illegal copying. Another reason why the monitor does not want to show is a poor-quality cable, this often happens with Chinese ones.

When connecting a digital TV set-top box to the monitor via an HDMI-HDMI cable, there were no particular problems, but also when using a cheap Chinese cable, the sound on the built-in speakers stubbornly did not appear.

HDMI to HDMI cable

Possible connection options

Some DVB T2 tuners have YPbPr connectors and very little SCART. In this case, we are dealing with an analog signal, the highest quality analog signal, therefore it continues to be used in computer monitors.

To connect the DVB T2 set-top box to the monitor, you need a YPbPr-VGA cable

YPbPr to VGA connector and cable

or SCART-VGA.

Here it should be borne in mind that VGA uses luminance and color-difference signals (RGB or Bgamma - Y, Rgamma - Y), and not a complete video signal and service information (resolution, synchronization).

Converter

Another possible option for connecting a set-top box to a monitor is using an AV to VGA signal converter.

AV to VGA signal converter

As you can see, the set-top box can be used as an external TV tuner for a monitor without a system unit.

Your setevichok "how to connect a digital TV set-top box to a monitor

Good afternoon.

First of all, determine what video input your monitor and digital TV set-top box have: "HDMI", "DVI-D", "VGA", "RCA".

Most modern monitors are equipped with "HDMI" and "DVI-D" connectors, which allow you to transfer video and audio streams. The very connection of the set-top box to the monitor is quite simple: connect the cable to the set-top box and to the monitor itself. If you have a monitor with built-in speakers, that's it.

In cases where the monitor has a "VGA" connector or does not have speakers, it is recommended to output the sound separately to any speaker system: the TV set-top box will have so-called "tulips" (usually white is responsible for the sound), take the "RCA-jack" adapter (or minijack, depending on acoustics)

and enjoy the pure sound in peace.

It is also possible to purchase a signal converter "AV" to "VGA"

which is slightly more expensive than adapters, but less striking (and the connection is even easier)

Application of VGA monitor with DVB-T2 set-top box.

Hello everybody! This is my first review. Do not judge strictly. I had a TV in the kitchen (not LCD), it showed poorly, I turned the antenna on a new one for each program. I bought myself a DVB-T2 prefix. I stopped turning the antenna, but the quality of the programs did not suit, at the top the yellow color prevailed, at the bottom blue. And I remembered that I have an old VGA LCD monitor 20 inches in diagonal. And I thought, is it possible to screw that monitor to the console. I asked around in our stores, read it on the Internet, and came to the conclusion that it was necessary to look for an adapter-converter in the Celestial Empire from a local "Levsha". Found, ordered. Running ahead - it works great!

Hello. I offer an overview of a DVB-T2 receiver with a VGA output, to which you can connect an old unnecessary monitor, even a CRT, even an LCD, it does not matter.
As a result, with minimal labor costs, we get a TV with the ability to receive digital terrestrial television.
If you are interested, please ...

I think many remember the reviews of reworking old monitors into TVs using special cards that were inserted in various ways into these same monitors. Someone turned out beautifully, someone not very well, but it does not matter, the main thing is the result.
I also remembered this when I stumbled upon a 17-inch LCD monitor lying around at home. But then the thought came, what if you can not alter anything, but choose the right digital receiver and that's it? And yes, it turns out they exist!

The receiver came without a box, just in a package. The photo of the parcel has not survived, but there is nothing to look at. Includes receiver, power supply and remote control.

Let's start with the remote:

Nothing unusual, the remote control is the most standard one, it is powered by 2 AAA batteries, which were not included in the kit either.

Receiver:

At first glance, it is also the most standard digital TV receiver. On the top surface of the control button, on the front end there is a window for the indicator and infrared receiver, on the right end there are three sockets for "tulip" connectors (1 video and 2 audio), on the back end there is an antenna input, a power socket, USB, HDMI, VGA. Here is the last connector and distinguishes the monitored receiver from the huge team of its fellows.

Disassembly:

To disassemble the case, it is necessary to tear off the legs, under which the screws are hidden. Further, the body can be easily separated into 2 parts.

The main receiver chip is hidden under a glued-on heatsink. I did not rip it off, fearing to damage it. The high-frequency part is assembled on the rather popular MXL608 chip:

Also on the board there is a 32Mbit serial Flash chip MX25L3206E

The most interesting thing is the presence of the EP94Z1E microcircuit, which is an HDMI to VGA + sound converter. These chips are used to produce HDMI-2-VGA converters. Those. in this case, there is a hybrid of a conventional DVB-T2 receiver and an HDMI to VGA converter.

Instrument operation:
After connecting the antenna, power supply unit and monitor to the receiver, a menu for choosing a language and searching for channels appeared on the latter. There was no Russian among the languages present in the firmware, so English was left. In the process of searching for channels, signals from two multiplexes were found, consisting of 20 TV channels and 3 radio channels.
The picture is quite watchable.

Below I will give a photo of the menu pages, I do not see the point in describing them in detail, tk. they are no different from similar samples without VGA output. Everything is standard.

It is only necessary to note the need to connect also a device for sound output (speakers). If the receiver is connected to a TV via HDMI, then both image and sound are transmitted through this interface, but when using the receiver with a monitor, the sound must be output through something. You can use computer active speakers by connecting them to the "tulips". I used a speaker with a built-in amplifier, which I once pulled out of the HP system unit. The built-in amplifier is powered by 5 volts, so I decided to power it from a USB receiver, for which I soldered a USB connector for power supply and a "tulip" connector to the end of the cable for connecting to the audio output.

Video version of the review:

Outcome:

As I mentioned above, this receiver is a hybrid of a regular DVB-T2 receiver and an HDMI to VGA converter. Those. you could buy any digital receiver offline and order an HDMI to VGA adapter. The cost would be about the same. But there, perhaps, there could be problems with the joint operation of the receiver and the adapter. There are no problems here, tk. the manufacturer took care of their absence by “stuffing” 2 of these devices into 1 case.
So, with the help of this receiver, the old monitor turns into ... a TV set.
That's all I wanted to share. I plan to buy +110 Add to favourites I liked the review +70 +130

You bought an Android TV box and want to connect and test it as soon as possible. Before proceeding directly to this lesson, it is necessary to study the apparatus in more detail. Next, let's take a closer look at the standard connectors that the devices are equipped with.

Connectors and ports of TV set-top boxes

HDMI. All modern boxes have this connector. Its direct purpose is to connect to devices for displaying images, such as monitors or televisions. An HDMI cable must be included with the set-top box. If it breaks, it will not be difficult to buy a replacement in specialized stores. It is worth noting that this type of connector eliminates a lot of wires, due to the ability to transmit not only video, but also an audio signal.

Analog (sound and video). Such exits are very rare. They are being superseded by HDMI. They are useful for connecting the device to an old model that does not have a digital interface. Tulip cables (wires with RCA connectors) are used to set up the connection.

USB. It is known to many users. All modern telephones are equipped with it. It can be found on players, cameras and other gadgets. There are several USB options. The most popular version is USB 3.0. Compared to its predecessor USB 2.0, it transmits signals faster and better.

Audio outputs. As mentioned in the article above, HDMI is capable of transmitting both audio and video. That's all it takes to use your TV box. But manufacturers still equip models with audio outputs, optical or coaxial. Sometimes both are found. They are referred to as Optical or SPDIF. If we are talking about a coaxial output, then Coaxial.

LAN. It is used to enable the user to connect the set-top box to the worldwide network using a wire. This option is more reliable than a wireless connection. The signal is clearer and smoother. The RJ-45 type is often found on TV boxes.

Card reader. A special slot for reading SD and SDHC cards. There is a card next to it, so it's easy to find it on the device.

Nutrition. The port is required for all set-top boxes, regardless of the model. The power adapter is connected to it. It has a round shape, and therefore it is difficult to confuse it with others. On the market, you can find options that receive electricity using a USB port: mini-USB or micro-USB.

Now you know more about modern TV boxes based on Android and what they are for. In addition to what is mentioned in the article, the devices are equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless interfaces. Do not forget to read the instructions in detail after purchase.

How to connect an Android TV box to a modern TV?

We start with the easiest and simplest task, which will only take a few seconds. The market offers customers a huge range of modern televisions. In this article, under this designation, we mean the presence of an HDMI interface. First you need to find the connector on the TV with this designation. It is placed on the side or back.

On all TV boxes, regardless of the model, it is located at the back. You cannot do without an HDMI cable, you will find it in the kit. Connect the cable between the two devices and connect the power adapter to the box.

Didn't notice the image on the screen? Don't worry right away. For the picture to appear, you must select the display mode in the TV settings. If there are several ports, you must select the one to which the box is connected. Now you can pick up the remote control and control the device remotely.

How to connect a TV box to an old TV

Some users use a set-top box to get the most out of their old TV, extending its useful life.

The question arises: how to properly connect these devices to each other?

Old TVs do not have an HDMI output, so you need to choose a TV set-top box that has analog outputs: white and red jacks - audio; yellow - video signal. The TV must have the correct connectors. For the image, you will need tulip cords, at the end of each with three plugs.

All required cables have been used and connected correctly. Using the remote control, set the necessary settings. You need to run the video output function on the TV.
If you are keeping up with the times, it is recommended to choose an improved model. There are no outdated tulips in the new boxes for a long time. The cords needed when connecting to an old TV are rarely included. They need to be purchased additionally in stationary or online stores. 3.5 Jack-3RCA will do. On one side there are three “tulips” of different colors, on the other - a 3.5 connector. Three plugs connect to TV, single to set-top box.

A variety of signal converters are available commercially. The widespread model is HDMI2AV. Its price is about five hundred rubles. It connects the box with an HDMI cable and a TV set with a 3RCA-3RCA cable. Based on the above information, the choice of connections is huge.

Are you sure you did everything right, but the image did not appear? The problem may lie in the malfunction of the equipment, cables, adapter or adapters. If the warranty is not baked, the gadget will be replaced or repaired free of charge. Repairs must be carried out by a qualified technician. Without proper knowledge and skills, you cannot repair the device.

How to connect a TV box to a monitor

Initially, when specialists were developing Android TV boxes, they were created specifically for TVs. After a while, taking into account consumer demand and the development of technology, devices began to be actively connected to monitors. If you are using a monitor model with an HDMI connector, then there should be no problem. The procedure is the same as for TV.

If the monitor is far from new, then the situation becomes more complicated. You will need the following connectors: VGA and DVI. Just plugging in the cable and getting an image won't work. More work needs to be done.

A special adapter is needed to achieve the expected result. The more common type is HDMI – DVI as well. On one side of the adapter is an electrical connector HDMI, on the other VGA or DVI. Depending on what you need. One end attaches to the set-top box and the other to the monitor.

If you did everything correctly, it is not a fact that an image will appear. The problem may be a poor quality wire or HDCP copy protection.

A more reliable method is to use an HDMI to VGA and Audio converter. Outwardly, this is a compact device, it costs little, but you can find it in any theme store. Simple to use. The TV box, via HDMI cable, is connected on one side, and on the other there are VGA or DVI connectors. There is also a separate branch with a 3.5 mm jack - a standard jack for speakers or headphones.

These are not all connection methods, but almost all involve the use of a converter. Before starting, check the condition of the connectors and cables and the equipment being used.
