Important church events in May

AT last month spring, all Orthodox will celebrate two very important holidays:

  • 05/17/18 - Ascension of the Lord;
  • 05/27/18 - Trinity.

In addition, there will be two days of commemoration of the dead:

09.05.18 Day of Remembrance of the Dead Soldiers
26.05.18 Trinity Saturday

From 05/28/18 to 06/03/18, a continuous Trinity week will be held. It is remarkable that on Friday and Wednesday it will not be necessary to fast.

Ascension of the Lord

This holiday is widely known to all Orthodox Christians in Russia. It is always celebrated on Thursday, so it comes on the fortieth day from Happy Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on May 17, 2018.

AT different places This celebration has various names:

  • Saved;
  • Spasov day;
  • Ascension day;
  • Ascension.
  • In the church calendar, it is listed as - the Ascension of the Lord.

Very often, farewell to spring is associated with him.
When this day is mentioned, some moments associated with this celebration are immediately remembered:

  • memorial loaves;
  • solemn worship in temples;
  • "Heavenly ladders";
  • commemoration of the dead;
  • memorial pancakes, etc.

This day belongs to the twelfth holidays and is celebrated not only in Russia, but also in Europe. This holiday reminds us of how, about two thousand years ago, the Son of God ascended to heaven. New Testament describes this point in detail. As you know, the resurrected Jesus appeared before the eyes of his disciples more than once. When the fortieth day came, he asked them to gather in ancient city Jerusalem. In the presence of his apostles, he again ascended into heaven. True, after that, two angels descended from heaven, who were dressed in all white. They told the students that their teacher would definitely return. In fact, the Gospels of Mark and Luke tell of Jesus telling his disciples about his Ascension beforehand.

Until the end of the fourth century, the Trinity and the Ascension were one celebration. Then these holidays were divided.

How the Ascension is celebrated

The holiday is celebrated for 10 days. Wednesday is called the day of forefeast. In all churches, the rite of giving of the Holy Resurrection is performed. The service goes on all night. The clergy read the stichera of the Color Triodion. In the morning paroemias from the Gospel of Mark are heard. The following days are called the after-feast. In churches, priests glorify the Ascension of the Savior to heaven. On Friday, the ceremony of giving the Ascension is performed. From Easter until Ascension, the clergy are dressed in white robes.

Among other actions on this day, it is customary to remember the dead. In Russia, there used to be a tradition - housewives made “heavenly ladders” from dough so that deceased relatives could more easily get to paradise. It was customary to bring them to the graves of ancestors. Sometimes they were taken directly to the field. It was believed that this contributed good harvest. Ladders helped the grain to rise faster to the sky.

Also in Russia there was a tradition to bake "Christ's Bastards" - these are pancakes made in a special way. Ancient traditions said that Jesus in the interval between Easter and Ascension bypasses all believers. These culinary products were baked to him “on the path”.

Ascension is not allowed to work. Usually believers go to visit or invite the closest people to their home.

Even on this day, there was a tradition to help the poor. It was believed that the Savior himself could walk under the guise of such people.

It was also forbidden to spit and litter, so as not to accidentally harm Jesus, who at that time, under the guise of a beggar, walks among living people.

Day of the Holy Trinity

Also applies to the Twelfth Feasts. It has a rolling date and is celebrated on the fiftieth day from Bright Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on 05/27/18, Sunday.

For this celebration, special features are inherent:

  • decorating dwellings with flowers, tree branches and field herbs;
  • special worship;
  • consecration of water;
  • baking special flour products and etc.

The name of the holiday comes from an event that happened more than two thousand years ago. It was then that the Holy Spirit appeared before the eyes of the Virgin Mary and the apostles, who proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of God. The Trinity is evidence that the Holy Spirit, God the Son, and God the Father are one.

It was established in honor of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and the Virgin Mary on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday symbolizes the unity of the Holy Spirit, God the Father and God the Son.

As ancient manuscripts testify, on the fiftieth day after Bright Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the mother of Jesus and his disciples. This happened in Jerusalem in the Upper Room of Zion. At first, all those present heard an unusual noise, then a blessed fire. After these events, the followers of Jesus began to be able to speak different languages. By the command of God, this was done so that the apostles could carry the Christian teaching different nations living on earth.

How is Trinity celebrated in Russia

This holiday is celebrated for three days. Temples, dwellings of believers are decorated with green branches of trees, meadow grasses and flowers. Priests wear green clothes, which personifies life-giving.

Church services begin on Saturday and continue throughout the night. A solemn liturgy sounds at the Trinity itself. The third day is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. During the service, water is blessed.

Parishioners, consecrated branches, flowers and herbs are dried and used as a talisman throughout the year.

On the days of the Trinity, in addition to temples, Christians must visit the graves of their ancestors in order to treat the spirits.

Before the holiday, a general cleaning is done. Housewives decorate their house with a variety of greenery and cook festive dishes. Among them, there must be a loaf, which should bring prosperity and prosperity to the house.

After the church and the cemetery, it's time for festivities. First, family, relatives and friends gather for round table to congratulate each other on the Trinity and taste the festive dishes of the hostess. After a meal, people go out into the street, into nature, where they dance and sing ritual songs. In some places it is customary to kindle a fire at the same time.

On this day, healers collect herbs. It is believed that these days they have special healing properties.

Even in the days of the Trinity, it is customary to guess. Young girls perform all sorts of ceremonies and guess at their future life and groom. In doing so, they use the collected herbs and tree branches.

Trinity is not allowed:

  • work and do household chores;
  • sew, wash and cut your hair;
  • to swear and quarrel;
  • swim in natural waters. They say that these days there are mermen, mermaids and other evil spirits.

Orthodox worship and holidays

The soul is like a traveler crossing a shaky bridge. A helping hand is stretched out to her from the other side, but in order to accept this help, the traveler must reach out his hand himself. Such a hand, stretched out towards the forces of Light, is every good choice, every right deed and every bright movement of the soul, including prayer. This is the kernel of the answer to the question: why pray? And why worship? “Prayer” (see) is a solitary conversation of the soul with God or with the forces of Light that create Him; this is also a state of tenderness, reverence and spiritual delight, embracing the heart when contemplating the Beautiful, High or Great; this is also the catharsis through which the inspiring works of art lift the soul of a person; this is her participation in the cleansing and uplifting actions of the temple.
What is a rite?
This is a sacred action, established on the basis of a person's inner experience, for the sake of obtaining help from the supersensible light forces or for the sake of preventing hostile influences on him from the supersensible dark forces.
What is a sacrament?
This is such a sacred act, during the performance of which the superconscious roots of the human will receive divine grace, that is, they are filled with strength to move towards harmony between the personality and the universe, spirit and flesh, man and the Divine.
Therefore, the indifference of consciousness or lack of faith on the part of the one over whom the sacrament is performed does not deprive the sacrament of its effectiveness. Hence the possibility of performing sacraments over unbelievers, the seriously ill and children. But the participation of reason and personal faith facilitates and accelerates the flow of currents of grace from the superconscious roots of the will into the sphere of daytime consciousness.

Sacraments of the Christian Church:
; ; ; ; - the sacrament of endowing a clergyman with divine grace through episcopal ordination - the blessing of the Lord; (wedding) - the blessing of the church before God, the consecration of marital ties; .

Historically established worship includes:
1. daily circle;
2. the seventh circle;
3. fixed annual circle;
4. the movable annual circle formed around the Easter holiday.

The most important public service in Orthodoxy is the Divine Liturgy (also called Mass in Russia), during which the sacrament of the Eucharist is performed - the most important sacrament of the Church after Baptism, which constitutes its essence and without which it is unthinkable.

The liturgical year begins with the Week of Easter, which occupies a very special and exceptional position among the holidays.
(Easter) - April 28, 2019.

Twelfth holidays. In the worship of the Orthodox Church there are twelve great feasts of the annual liturgical circle (except for the feast of Pascha). They are divided into the Lord's, dedicated to Jesus Christ, and the Theotokos, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. According to the time of celebration, the twelfth holidays are divided into fixed (non-transitory) and mobile (transitory). The first are constantly celebrated on the same dates of the month, the second fall every year on different numbers, depending on the date of the celebration of Easter.

Church fasts in June 2017

June includes not only Orthodox celebrations, but also fasts - days when a believer consciously refuses worldly joys, temptations and idle meals.

During such a period, it is necessary to spend as much time as possible in prayer, reevaluate your life and ask for forgiveness from the Lord for various sins. Such a pastime allows you to get closer to God and hope for his favor.

Apostolic post (Petrov post). This is a multi-day post that falls in June. It starts on June 12 and lasts until July 11. In Orthodoxy, Petrov fasting is not considered strict.

More about holidays

Or Pentecost - one of the most revered and beloved holidays for all followers Orthodox Church. AT Holy Scripture it is said that on the fiftieth day after Easter, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven to people, which proved the triplicity God's essence. On this day, people rush to visit the church, repent of their sins and ask for forgiveness from the Lord.

This holiday is widely known among Christians and has been celebrated since time immemorial. It is not surprising that for all the time of its existence it has acquired many traditions, signs and rituals. Some of them have survived to this day and are sacredly performed by modern church people.

Consider some of the most significant traditions of the Trinity:

  • Mandatory decoration of the house with flowers, herbs, tree branches, in particular, birch. The people believed that such “bouquets” could save the house from evil interference and trouble. At the end of the holidays, the branches were burned at the stake, thereby taking away all the sorrows and sorrows of the family along with the ashes and smoke.
  • A visit to the church, where believers listen to festive hymns in honor of this great summer celebration.

In addition to traditions, there are also quite interesting rituals that allow you to righteously have fun on the Trinity and even predict the fate of a person. It's about about weaving wreaths.

Since ancient times, girls who dreamed of a successful marriage wove wreaths of wild flowers, went to the river and let them go with the flow. The one whose wreath floats the farthest and does not sink will marry a good, respectable man earlier.

The acquisition of the head of John the Baptist - the third acquisition falls on this date (as is known, there were only three of these acquisitions). A festive liturgy is held in the churches, the Orthodox celebrate this great event with a small feast.

Let us note that in June Peter's fast begins, established in honor of two saints: Peter and Paul. It is not strict, but still provides for some restrictions on food, entertainment and other joys of life.

People who try to adhere to this post believe that it is easily tolerated due to the fact that it falls in the summer - a period when fruits and vegetables can adequately replace various cereals, meat and other products.

June 2018 is marked for the Orthodox by many important anniversaries. Saints are commemorated this month: Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy, Tsar Constantine and his mother Tsarina Helena, Blessed Xenia of Petersburg, John of Kronstadt and others. Also in June, Peter's fast begins for the Orthodox. Read about these and other Orthodox dates church calendar in June 2018.

Information about these and other Orthodox church holidays and important dates in July, those who observe the laws of the Christian faith are needed - and there are most of them in our country.

Orthodox church holidays in June 2018

Memorial Day of Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy

On this day, Orthodox believers remember the right-believing Grand Duke Dimitry Donskoy, the hero of the Battle of Kulikovo.

Dimitry I Ivanovich, nicknamed Donskoy for the victory in the Battle of Kulikovo, - Prince of Moscow (since 1359) and Grand Duke Vladimirsky (since 1363).

The name of Dmitry Donskoy for several centuries has become a symbol of Russian military glory. Having taken the throne at the age of 12, he devoted himself to the cause of the unification of Russian lands and the liberation of Russia from Tatar-Mongol yoke. The victory in the Battle of Kulikovo on September 8, 1380, which is also called Mamaevo, or the Battle of the Don, brought special glory to the prince. For this victory, Grand Duke Dimitri was nicknamed Donskoy.

Prince Demetrius died in 1389 at the age of 38. He was canonized as a saint in 1988, the year of the celebration of the millennium of the Baptism of Russia.

Celebration in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

Established in memory of the salvation of Moscow from invasion Crimean Khan Mahmet Giray in 1521.

In 1521, the Crimean, Nogai and Kazan Tatars, led by Mehmet Giray, moved to Russia and, devastating everything in their path, approached Moscow.

The attack was unexpected, the Russians did not have time to gather troops and everyone was afraid that the capital would be taken and ruined. The townspeople, led by Metropolitan Varlaam, began to frantically pray to the Theotokos for salvation. And she appeared in a vision to the khan, surrounded by a numerous formidable army - themselves heavenly forces stood up for the Russian land and Crimean Tatars themselves fled from Moscow.

The icon of the Mother of God is considered miraculous and, according to legend, was written by the Evangelist Luke on a board from the table at which the Holy Family ate: the Savior, the Mother of God and the righteous Joseph the Betrothed.

Memorial Day of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Tsar Constantine and his mother Queen Helena

Emperor Constantine the Great ruled the Roman Empire in the first half of the 4th century. In 313, he issues the Edict of Milan "On religious tolerance", where he stops the persecution of Christians, and the Christian faith is freed.

Constantine did not leave the capital of the empire Ancient Rome, the former center of a pagan state, but moved its capital to the east, where the city of Constantinople was founded. Constantine was deeply convinced that only christian religion could unify the vast, heterogeneous Roman Empire. He supported the Church in every possible way, returned Christian confessors from exile, built churches, and took care of the clergy.

Memorial Day of Saint Blessed Xenia of Petersburg

Xenia of Petersburg is one of the most revered Russian saints. Left a widow at the age of 26, she gave away all the property she and her husband had acquired and chose for herself the difficult path of foolishness for Christ's sake. Dressed in the costume of her deceased husband, Xenia wandered around the Petersburg side for days on end, and at night, no matter what time of year and weather, she went to the field and stood there in kneeling prayer until the morning.

On another occasion, workers erecting a stone church at the Smolensk cemetery noticed that every night someone was dragging masonry bricks onto the top of the church under construction. For a long time they could not find out who this tireless assistant was. It turned out that it was the servant of God, blessed Xenia.

For her humility and deeds in the name of the faith of Christ, the Lord granted her the ability to see the hearts and the future.

Blessed Xenia died at the age of 71. And many miracles began to take place at her grave. The suffering were healed, broken peace was established in families, the needy received what they needed.

When icon veneration was restored, Patriarch Ignatius was shown in a vision the place where the head of the Forerunner was hidden. There, in the indicated place, she was found for the third time.

Saint's Day righteous John Kronstadt

After graduating with honors from the seminary and the Theological Academy in 1855, he was appointed to the St. Andrew's Cathedral in the city of Kronstadt, where he served all his life.

Kronstadt was the place of expulsion from the capital of various vicious people. In addition, there were many unskilled laborers working in the port. Almost all of them were in poverty, begging and drinking.

Father John was convinced that love and compassion can save any person.

“It is necessary to love every person both in his sin and in his shame,” he said. “There is no need to confuse a person - this image of God - with the evil that is in him” ... With such a consciousness, he went to people, reviving with the power of his truly pastoral compassionate love.

Father John used big love and fame throughout Russia.

Memorial Day of the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates

Saint Theodore came from the city of Euchait (in present-day Turkey) and was a governor (in Greek - "stratilate").
Many pagans, seeing his virtuous life and meekness, accepted the faith of Christ.
Emperor Licinius, co-ruler of Constantine, having learned about this, arrived in Heraclea and forced Theodore to bow to idols. When Saint Theodore remained unshakable, the angry ruler ordered that the confessor of Christ be subjected to cruel torments.

Theodore was crucified on the cross, and at night an angel appeared to the martyr, removed him from the cross and completely healed him. In the morning the servants of Licinius, who were sent to throw the body of Saint Theodore into the sea, seeing him completely healthy, believed in Christ. Many other pagans who saw the miracle of God also believed.

Upon learning of this, Licinius ordered Saint Theodore to be beheaded, and he died in the year 319.
