Lji ji 6 review. The LG G6 review is a good try. Day of battery life

In terms of the speed of working with applications, the “Chinese” is a little more agile. You have to pay for this with the voracity of the processor (Huawei is well aware of this, so it put a less clear screen + 4000 mAh into the battery) and the speed of work in games (but nothing can be done about it, but so far the speed is tolerable).

If we forget about the not very clear display, there is nothing to complain about in Huawei P20 Pro from a technical point of view. But there is something - with the software. The number of "glitches" is such that even Xiaomi owners with homemade "Vietnamese" firmware will laugh. Some of the problems are fixed, after which other "surprises" arrive. It’s also puzzling that in the “supermodel” running Kirin 970, navigation and network reception stability (network search speed after signal loss, switching between 3G / 4G) are clearly not up to what we are used to seeing in Snapdragon 835/845.

conclusions

Before us, of course, is the best LG among all that you can buy today. With the brightest screen, the fastest processor, good cameras in general + a "widescreen" unique among new smartphones, excellent sound and a minimum of "gags" on top of standard Android. And it's a thrill!

At the same time, it looks like a budget Alcatel, discharges to zero in less than a day, and takes pictures at the level of the flagships of 2018, only if you set the settings manually. And this is pain.

I will now say something masochistic, but there is some special way of the LG warrior in this “fight with the machine”. When a smartphone responds with excellent photo quality thanks to your efforts, and you know exactly how to squeeze cool photos out of it, and do not rely on whether the mobile phone selects the aperture value correctly (Galaxy S9), and whether it can stitch a night photo correctly after 4 seconds of continuous shooting (Huawei P20 Pro).

Design, ergonomics and software

LG has been walking for a long time, if not in the trendsetters of mobile fashion, then at least among the inveterate originals. shone with the extravagance of the leather back, which distinguished him from the general background. flaunted a controversial modular design - no one began to repeat after the Koreans, but they deserved a medal for bravery. The G6 brought to the masses an elongated 18:9 display.

The LG G7 ThinQ, however, falls out of this discordant, but colorful series - it was created according to a predetermined template of “the flagship smartphone of the 2018 model”. Tempered glass front and back, the obligatory “mono-brow” that fits into the elongated 19:9 display, the absence of any characteristic frills. We are used to the fact that flagship smartphones are trying to somehow draw attention to themselves, to take a special place on the shelf. Alas, the LG G7 is not one of those - its design can even be called banal.

The colors are modest too - in addition to the jet black G7 ThinQ, blue (Moroccan blue) and gray (icy platinum) are also presented. Koreans do not flirt with the user, trying to take their solidity and build quality. There is also a burgundy G7, but it is not officially imported into Russia.

There are no problems with the latter. Tempered glass on both the front and back panels is resistant to minor scratches: in two weeks of using the smartphone without a case, I did not find a single scratch on it - this is a rarity. The fins are made of metal with almost invisible (at least on a black background) plastic inserts for the correct operation of the antennas.

The main plus of the LG G7 ThinQ case is its moisture resistance - not just according to the IP68 standard, but with a military protection certificate (Military Standard 810G). I wouldn’t count on the fact that a smartphone will definitely survive if it falls on asphalt from a height of human growth, but you can drop it into a puddle or from a table without much fear. In which case, LG undertakes to replace the G7 ThinQ display free of charge within a year after purchase.

The most important moment at the same time - the mini-jack remained in place. As you can see, the analog connector is not at all a hindrance even to the maximum moisture protection class for today in mass smartphones. Don't believe the marketing games.

There is still something unusual in the LG G7 ThinQ case. It's about governing bodies. This time, the Koreans did without their proprietary power button on the rear panel, placing it on the standard place for Android smartphones - the right edge. But the separate volume keys have gone to the left, accompanied by an additional button with which you can call the Google Assistant. Many complain about it - they say, too many accidental clicks with mostly useless functionality. In fact, you can’t argue with the second one, but I didn’t have accidental clicks. I just didn't use that button.

The body dimensions of the LG G7 ThinQ are impressive - despite the large screen, it does not differ in thickness and width from its predecessor, which, recall, already had an elongated display. It is slightly higher, but this does not prevent the smartphone from being very convenient to use - as far as it is possible for a gadget with more than a six-inch diagonal screen.

As for the fingerprint scanner, it is located here in the traditional and, perhaps, the most comfortable place to use - on the rear panel, just below the camera block. The index finger lies there naturally, you do not need to shift the smartphone in your hand. The scanner itself is classic, capacitive, works quickly and without failures. With it, you can block not only the device as a whole, but also individual applications.

Also, if you wish, you can set the standard unlock for devices on Android 8.0 Oreo using face recognition. Special sensors are not used - this happens only due to the front camera (G7 ThinQ cannot provide protection against unlocking using a photo). So this is a purely secondary option, I would not seriously rely on it.

Smartphone LG G7: Screenshot

The operating system in the LG G7 ThinQ is covered with a proprietary shell LG UX 6.0+. The Koreans are slowly changing their software - even if it's an upgrade, it's all the same LG UX 6.0 that we saw back in the G6. Be that as it may, the shell is pleasant - it looks good, works fast, and is not overloaded with unnecessary software. It is possible to "hide" the notch on the screen by filling the status bar with black or gray. Well, or with several gradient options - you can give your smartphone pretentiousness.

I would like to note the absence of a search string in the standard version of the shell. There are shortcuts for both Google and Yandex, but you need to set the line yourself.

LG promises a timely update of the Android operating system to version 9.0. whether the shell will also be updated to the latest UX 7.0, we cannot say.

Display and sound

The LG G7 ThinQ uses an IPS LCD display. This is doubly strange, given the flagship status of the smartphone (when even the retrogrades from Apple are switching to OLED) and the fact that LG has been in the lead in the production of screens based on organic light-emitting diodes (true, television) for a year now. And if the V-series smartphones are indeed equipped with OLED displays, then the G7 is also a flagship in its essence - it is deprived of this advantage.

There are no questions about the diagonal and resolution: 6.1 inches, 19:9 format, resolution 3120 × 1440 pixels - with a pixel density of 564 ppi. If desired, the resolution can even be lowered in the settings, which will not greatly affect the quality of the picture in most applications, but will have a positive effect on battery life.

But this, of course, is a very high-quality LCD display - with all the necessary coatings (from effective oleophobic to polarized), but in addition to that - very bright. The maximum brightness measured in laboratory conditions was 609 cd / m 2, which is already more than good. But with auto-brightness activated, this figure can jump up to 1000 cd / m 2 - there will be no problems using a smartphone on a sunny day.

The default settings are not encouraging. In automatic mode, the average gamma is 2.28 with a fairly stable behavior of the curves. But the color temperature is overly raised: the “fork” is from 8,500 K to 10,500 K. The colors will inevitably be too cold. This is also reflected in the average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (greyscale + wide range of color shades): 7.48 at a rate of 3.00. Here, however, the extended color gamut, close to DCI-P3, also affects.

In order to get a more natural picture, it makes sense to turn to deeper settings and change the display of colors. As a rule, for this it is enough to use the presets provided - in particular, there is a “cinema” mode in which the colors immediately become noticeably warmer. However, in order for the screen to immediately show reference colors, this is not enough: gamma - 2.25, color temperature - from 7,500 K to 9,000 K, the average deviation of DeltaE by ColorChecker is 5.41.

To get something as close as possible to the color rendition conceived by the authors of films or photographs, you should tinker with the settings yourself, since there are all the possibilities for this - you can manually change not only the color temperature, but also individual colors on the RGB scale.

LG made a special emphasis on the sound of the smartphone. For this, there is not only a basic set of values (3.5 mm jack, Bluetooth 5.0 with support for aptX and aptX HD standards), but also a “named” DAC - Saber ES9218PC. He is familiar to us from the LG V20, and there were no questions to him, what then, what will not happen now - the G7 ThinQ sounds great through wired headphones: detailed, powerful and smooth, without unnecessary emphasis on any frequency spectrum. It can be used even with high-impedance headphones - the smartphone should “shake” them. But I didn't have a chance to verify this information.

The speaker is also not anyhow, but with a large resonator (17 times larger than, for example, in the G6) - and moreover, it has received its own name - Boombox. This allows you to count on a relatively powerful sound for a smartphone, especially when it lies on a table or other hard surface - there is something to resonate. At the same time, there is only one speaker, monophonic, located on the bottom edge. Neither with a vertical nor with a horizontal grip, it does not overlap with a finger.

LG also insists that it is necessary to communicate with a smartphone not only by touching the screen, but also by voice. To do this, its microphones are adapted like nowhere else - the developers claim that the voice is recognized from a distance of up to five meters. Checked - everything is true. Even in a noisy room or from the other side of the room, you can ask Google Assistant or "Alice" about something - and the artificial intelligence will hear.

However, nothing new: the usual color reproduction is not only for LG, but in general for any modern flagships. The only exceptions are Samsung and Motorola.

New - in sound! By and large, flagship LG got a 32-bit Quad DAC at its disposal back in 2015, with the announcement of the V10. Then the sound migrated to the G6 and V20, but de facto had almost no effect on the sound quality of the smartphone. In G6, everything is completely different! The smartphone itself sounds pretty good - not super-detailed, but the volume is already “adult”, the low frequencies are a little narrower, the high ones are muffled, the “middle” sings in the ears. With the activation of the Quad DAC (LG is silent about which model is inside. It is likely that the same ESS ES9218 borrowed from the LG V20) the volume ceiling rises sharply, the detail increases so that you start to notice defects in MP3 files, the scene becomes wider, the bottoms "inflate", but in moderation and do not hammer on the ears. A very successful configuration for high-impedance monitor headphones.

But with vacuum "plugs" very soon it begins to ring in the ears from excessive clear percussion and hissing sounds in the vocals. It makes sense to get into the equalizer and make the sound a little softer. But in sound detailing, it’s better to “overdo it than not do it”: if LG had a bad sound path with distortions and background noise, the “twists” would definitely not have helped it out.

I would be wary of comparing the LG G6 to the ZTE Axon 7 and its AKM AK4961, but with the Quad DAC activated, our test hero sounds much better than the Xiaomi Mi5s, OnePlus 3, or LeEco Le Pro 3. The edge over the Galaxy S7 edge is not very great, but in high-quality files, it will be noticeable that Samsung is a little “not holding out”.

The speaker is of high quality, about the same as in the Galaxy S7 or iPhone 7. The volume level is slightly above average, low frequencies are not felt, no "meat" or drama. So it's not bad, but a little annoying that in the LG G5 with the same dimensions, the speaker sounds louder, clearer, and more bass.

Iron

The performance of LG's flagships is a three-year-old tragedy. In 2013 and 2014, LG was ahead of the curve with its Quad HD display in the G3, and only the Snapdragon 801 with so many dots was pushed to its limits. Therefore, the speed of the smartphone did not shine, but everyone understood that innovative technologies require sacrifice. In 2015, Qualcomm, to put it mildly, messed up with overheating of its Snapdragon 810, so the LG G4 was forced to get a six-core "stump" with an index of 808. It's a sin to blame the Koreans for this - the MediaTek Helio X10 was even worse, and there were no other options left.

LG G7 ThinQ is a flagship smartphone with a stunning IPS screen, Hi-Fi sound and a rugged design. But, as we know, with LG smartphones, even with seemingly ideal characteristics, in practice things usually turn out to be not so rosy. Confirmed fears and this time. The LG G7 ThinQ review will tell you what pitfalls the Korean flagship of 2018 has.

The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 OS with proprietary LG UX shell.

Equipment and appearance

The design of the LG G7 disappointed fans of the Korean brand, the flagship lost its corporate identity and became a typical smartphone with a monobrow and a glass case, of which a huge number came out in 2018. The chassis of the case is made of metal, the back cover is glass with a high-quality oleophobic coating, prints on the surface remain in small quantities and are easily erased.

The smartphone is IP68 water-resistant, and the LG G7 has received the military 810G shockproof certification. On the cutout in the display are an LED indicator, sensors, a selfie camera and a conversational speaker.

The bottom end includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a microphone, a USB-C port and a multimedia speaker. On the top is a hybrid tray for NanoSIM and MicroSD cards.

On the right is the power button. On the left are the separated volume buttons and the call key for the Google voice assistant.

The back cover includes a dual camera module, LED flash, laser autofocus and a fingerprint scanner. The LG G7 lies just fine in the hand, but the assistant button is pressed every now and then, no matter how you pick up the phone, since there is an option to turn it off in the settings.

Screen

The diagonal of the screen is 6.1 inches, the resolution is 2K 3120x1440px, the pixel density is 563 ppi. In the settings, you can select one of 5 preset color temperature modes or set it manually, it is also possible to hide the monobrow by filling adjacent areas with black and change the display resolution, which allows you to increase the autonomy of the smartphone.

The display of the LG G7 is the same as it should be for a flagship - bright, saturated, contrasting, with maximum viewing angles. Despite the IPS matrix, there is an Always-on-Display mode that can be configured to turn on according to a schedule. It is possible to use a mini-window, in which the interface is reduced for comfortable control of the smartphone with one hand.

Performance

The LG G7 received a top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, but for some reason the Koreans regretted the memory - there are only 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of permanent memory. These are figures for a typical mid-range smartphone in 2018, but certainly not a flagship device.

Despite the modest amount of memory, the G7 runs quickly and smoothly, with no freezes or lags. On it you can play any games at high graphics settings. In PUBG, the average frame rate is 43 fps, in World of Tanks 55-60 fps. Under load, the smartphone does not heat up more than 44 degrees. The device is running Android 8.0 OS with LG UX 6.0+ shell, the manufacturer promises a quick update to Android P.

Camera

Like previous LG flagships, the G7 uses two modules with a standard (16 MP, f/1.6) and a wide-angle lens (16 MP, 106 degrees, f/1.9). Compared to other current flagships, the LG G7 shoots worse, photos taken with the main camera have mediocre detail, while the dynamic range and exposure accuracy do not reach the flagship level.

Portrait mode works well, blurring is soft and quite natural.
The smartphone records video in 4K resolution 30 fps or FHD 60 fps and does it very worthy in all respects. The only thing you can find fault with in terms of video shooting is a noticeable crop of the frame even when using a wide-angle camera.

speaker, sound quality

LG smartphones are traditionally good in terms of sound, and in the G7 this applies not only to playback in headphones, but also to the multimedia speaker. It implements an acoustic resonator, which allows you to use hard surfaces where the smartphone lies as an amplifier. Due to this, the maximum sound volume reaches an impressive 100 dB, while the sound becomes unusually voluminous for a phone. This feature works only if the smartphone is on the table or something solid, but when held in the hands, the G7 plays very well.

High-quality sound in headphones is provided by the use of the ESS Saber ES9218PC DAC, which does its job perfectly. The LG G7 is able to drive any, even high-impedance headphones, and produces clear, detailed, and very loud sound.

Battery

LG G7 is equipped with a 3000 mAh lithium polymer battery, and this is one of the weaknesses of the smartphone. At maximum screen brightness, it plays video for no more than 7 hours, games land the battery in 5 hours. The device is enough for a full day of work only with not the most active use, the time of the active screen at auto brightness is usually 4-4.5 hours. When using the Always on Display mode, an average of 7-15% is lost per day, which depends on the brightness of the displayed information, which can be adjusted.

Communication and Internet

The smartphone supports two SIM cards, has NFC with Mifare, Wi-Fi DualBand, Bluetooth 5.0 with support for high-quality aptX HD audio transmission. Navigation capabilities are provided by GPS and GLONASS systems. The phone finds satellites very quickly and in large numbers, the geopositioning error does not exceed 5-6 meters.

Video review of LG G7 ThinQ

Competitors, conclusion

As expected, the LG G7 is a very controversial smartphone. It has high-quality case materials and excellent assembly, but a design licked from the iPhone X, comfortable ergonomics, but there is an ever-interfering Google Assistant call button, perfect sound quality, but mediocre for a flagship camera, a wonderful IPS display, but more than modest autonomy. The last significant plus in the LG G7 piggy bank is IP68 and MIL-STD810G protection, this is really a very durable device that you need to try hard to break.
