Mercedes ml 164 diesel weak points. Mercedes ML: rest for the soul on the road or continuous expenses? Common malfunctions of power units

25.12.2017

Restrained, solid, a little conservative - this is how you can characterize the Mercedes ML. This model appeared on the market back in 1997 and is one of the first mid-size premium crossovers. The second generation of Mercedes ML appeared eight years later and it was this generation that became a real bestseller in the world market. The car attracts with a pleasant design, rich equipment and a large selection of powerful powertrains and low cost in the secondary market, however, when choosing a car, these are not the most important criteria, especially when it comes to a car that already has more than 100,000 kilometers. Therefore, today I will talk about how reliable the Mercedes ML has proven itself and what problems you may encounter during operation.

Problem areas Mercedes ML in the back of the W164

Body weaknesses:

Paintwork - German cars of past years have always been famous for their quality and good corrosion resistance. Mercedes ML was no exception in these components, its body steadfastly resists the onslaught of the “red” disease; chips and small scratches do not rust for a long time, the exceptions may be specimens restored after an accident by the “handicraft” method.

Chromium - chrome-plated elements do not tolerate chemicals, which we generously sprinkle on roads in winter, as a result, after a couple of years of operation, it begins to become cloudy and “bloom”.

tailgate - it often warps it, due to the destruction of the bolts holding the door hinges.

Door locks – often stop working for one of two reasons. 1. The lock mechanism fails. 2. Faults appear in the Keyless Go software. In the cold season, especially after washing, the fifth door lock may start acting up.

Water in the trunk - the cause of moisture, as a rule, is leaky rear optics seals. If the seals are not changed for a long time, moisture will damage the electronic board of the SAM unit (located in the right niche of the trunk).

Vin code - located under the passenger seat, on the right side.

Common malfunctions of power units

Mercedes ML engines, subject to the manufacturer's recommendations for operation and maintenance (high-quality lubricants must be used), are usually reliable, but some troubles still happen to them. Batteries (there are 2 of them) have a limited resource - 5 years, each replacement will cost about 50 USD. The starter solenoid relay fails every 80-100 thousand km, the replacement work will cost 50-70 USD.

"Sores" of gasoline engines M272 (3.5) and M273 (5.5):

balance shaft - problems with it begin after 100,000 km of run. Symptoms: the engine may start to “diesel”, and the Check Engine indicator lights up on the instrument panel (during diagnostics, it gives errors 1200 and 1208). The main cause of the disease is the wear of the ceramic-metal sprockets of the balance shaft. To fix the problem, you will need to remove the motor (the M273 motor does not need to be removed, in it, instead of the balance shaft (which is not), the intermediate gear of the timing chain is changed). Together with the shaft, it is necessary to replace the timing chain, its tensioner and damper. If the breakdown is not eliminated in a timely manner, it can lead to a violation of the position of the camshafts, metal chips are formed from their friction, which can “kill” the oil pump. In most cases, the problem occurs on cars manufactured before 2008. Restoring an engine costs $1,500-3,000, and therefore, many owners, when the first symptoms appear, try to get rid of the problem car as soon as possible. Therefore, diagnostics should not be neglected.

Oil leaks - a fairly common phenomenon for this engine, as a rule, plastic plugs of the cylinder block are the cause. The service life of the plugs rarely exceeds 50,000 km.

Intake manifold - here the problematic place is the early failure of the damper adjustment rods, they fail after 70-90 thousand km. Symptoms - if there is a malfunction in the collector, the motor starts to “troit”, the speed can also “float”, and the “Check engine” error appears on the instrument panel. To eliminate the disease, the entire assembly will need to be replaced.

Catalysts - when using low-quality fuel, they begin to break down ahead of schedule. To solve the problem once and for all, the catalysts must be replaced with flame arresters.

Problem areas of the motorM 113 (5.0):

Increased oil consumption - the culprit, as a rule, is the strong wear of the valve stem seals, often replacing them solves the problem. Also, the cause of the "zhory" of oil by the engine can be severe carbon contamination of the crankcase ventilation system. Treatment - cleaning is required.

Oil leaks - appear due to loss of tightness of the oil heat exchanger seal (treated by replacing the seal). Leaks can also be found at the junction of the oil filter housing.

Pulley damper and crankshaft sensor - the damper may begin to delaminate after 80,000 km of run, the sensor also serves approximately the same amount.

fuel injectors - when using "badyazhny" gasoline, they will not last even 80,000 km. A malfunction of the fuel equipment entails a loss of power and unstable operation of the engine.

Otherwise, you should not expect any serious troubles from gasoline engines, it should be noted that their motor resource is more than 350 thousand km. The AMG version looks better than the civilian ML in terms of reliability. The fact is that the production of such cars is subject to more stringent quality control. Power units are assembled by hand and each motor is stamped with a personal stamp of the master, which formally gives almost a lifetime guarantee.

Disadvantages of diesel power unitsOM 642 (3.0):

An exhaust manifold - on pre-styling versions, there were cases when pieces of the inner shell of the collector or welds broke off over time and fell into the turbine, damaging its blades, shaft, and also the geometry change mechanism. The reason is a large amount of soot (the use of low-quality diesel fuel exacerbates the problem). Replacing collectors costs almost 1000 USD.

Turbocharger Garrett - the turbine is afraid of traveling long distances, the main reason is the unfortunate location of the unit (installed in the most heat-loaded place) - it can fail on a run of 100-150 thousand km. The price tag for a new turbine can surprise even wealthy owners - about $ 2,000. With careful operation, the turbine will last up to 300,000 km.

Glow plugs - the ignition elements are reliable, but it is not worth delaying their replacement, since the thread of a faulty candle quickly turns sour, and it is not always possible to unscrew them in a natural way. Very often you have to remove the head of the engine block and drill out a burnt out candle.

crankshaft pulley clutch - often become the culprit of the appearance of extraneous noise and increased vibrations.

engine mounts - due to the heavy weight and vibration load of the engine, the pillows have to be changed much more often than in gasoline versions.

Fuel equipment - all diesel power units were equipped with a Common Rail system, which painfully tolerates diesel fuel “from a canister”, when using low-quality diesel fuel, there is a high probability of problems with injectors, injection pump, EGR valve at a range of up to 150,000 km. Eliminating any of the malfunctions in the fuel system is not cheap.

Transmission

The main symptoms of a malfunctioning automatic transmission are jerks (jolts) when starting, accelerating and stopping. With low mileage, the problem can be eliminated by flashing the automatic transmission control unit. If this procedure does not help, most likely your 7G-Tronic has a typical problem - the hydraulic valves or control valve solenoids are out of order. The disease is so common that the manufacturer has released a special repair kit, which is a board and the valves themselves. If you drive jerkily for a long time, the failure of the clutches will not be long in coming. Replacing the valve body will cost 1500 USD, you can try and restore it, they ask for about 500 USD for repairs. Closer to 150,000 km, the oil pump fails, if it fails, the risk of transmission overheating increases, as a result of which the ECM dies. Another ailment is the leakage of the cooling tubes of the “machine”

P.S. During restyling, the manufacturer managed to eliminate most of the problems.

Disadvantages of the all-wheel drive system:

Front axle reducer - fails on a run of 100-120 thousand km. Symptoms - the appearance of vibrations and hum. Repair costs 400-600 USD.

Front driveshaft - requires replacement on a run of 120-170 thousand km (the resource depends on the operating conditions). Symptoms - the bearing starts to buzz.

Outboard bearing - it can make noise after 130-150 thousand km, the officials change it only assembled with a cardan shaft, in unofficial service stations it can be replaced separately.

Transfer box chain- with frequent off-road trips, it stretches after 100-120 thousand kilometers. Symptoms - cracking (grinding) appears under loads.

Razdatka - with careful operation, it will last 200-250 thousand km.

Suspension resource Mercedes ML W164

Mercedes ML W164 was equipped with two types of chassis - standard and hydraulic AirMatic. The spring suspension of the standard Mercedes ML is as strong as tank armor, but the air suspension can be an additional expense, but let's start with everything in order.

Front suspension:

  • Stabilizer struts - 60-80 thousand km.
  • Ball joints - may begin to creak after 70,000 km.
  • Shock absorbers - surrendered on a run of 130-150 thousand km
  • Wheel bearings - go up to 150,000.
  • Lower levers - if you do not ride off-road, they nurse more than 150,000 km (silent blocks fail, the original part is assembled with a lever).

Rear suspension:

  • Shock absorbers - surrendered on a run of 100-130 thousand km
  • The remaining elements are able to serve without replacement for more than 1,500,000 km.

Airmatic air suspension:

Pneumocylinders - they often give up after 80-120 thousand km, the purchase of one original front cylinder will cost 800-1000 USD, the rear one - 400-600 USD. For an analogue, they ask from 250 USD. if you operate a car with faulty cylinders, compressor wear accelerates. Buying a new one will cost 2000-3000 dollars. Checking the condition of the air springs is quite simple - you need to raise the suspension to the maximum height and leave it in this position for 20-30 minutes ( should not fall even one millimeter).

extraneous sounds - appears as a result of loosening of the fastening of the pneumatic elements to the rack, to fix the problem, the suspension broach is required.

Steering:

steering rack - as a rule, it does not cause trouble up to 200,000 km, however, on some specimens, oil seals and seals wore out at 100-120 thousand km, as a result, it began to flow.

Tie rods - This part rarely takes care of more than 120,000 km.

Steering shaft cardan - on some copies served less than 100,000 km. When it malfunctions, knocks appear while driving on a broken road, many mistakenly think that the rail is knocking and continue to operate the car without contacting a service station.

power steering pump - it is also not a standard of reliability, when replacing the pump, the owners recommend replacing the power steering fluid reservoir, the fact is that a filter mesh is integrated into it, which clogs over time, most likely this accelerates pump wear.

Brake system:

The brakes are reliable, but due to the considerable weight of the car, the pads wear out quickly, the resource of the brake pads is 30-40 thousand km.

Salon and electronics

Decoration Materials - the build quality and most materials do not raise any questions - nothing creaks over time, plastic will retain its presentation for a long time. The only thing that can be criticized is the seat upholstery - made of eco-leather.

electrical equipment - in general, the electronics are reliable, but failures may occur over time. The weak point is the servos of the electronic dampers (malfunctions appear), there are often complaints about the incorrect operation of the sound signal, the buttons on the steering wheel and the standard audio system (the disk does not give up). "Glitches" in the climate system, as a rule, are caused by software failures of the KLA control unit, the problem is solved by updating the firmware. In winter, moisture from melted snow gets on the floor, and then into the electronic components ( located at the feet under the rug), as a result of which the electrical boards are oxidized and numerous problems appear. The main disadvantage is the high cost of eliminating even a minor “glitch”, and given the amount of electronics that the car is equipped with, their appearance is a matter of time.

What is the result:

They usually say about cars like the Mercedes ML: it’s well-tailored and tightly sewn, the car is reliable and even at an advanced age it won’t bother with frequent breakdowns. Today, in the secondary market, the ML in the back of the W164 has a very attractive price, but it is not worth buying it with the last money, since servicing this model is not cheap even in an unofficial service.

If you have experience in operating this car model, please tell us what problems and difficulties you had to face. Perhaps it is your review that will help readers of our site when choosing a car.

01.05.2017

The second generation of the popular M-class SUV from the German automobile brand Mercedes-Benz. The three-beam star on the hood has always caused a special thrill among most motorists, but not everyone can afford a new car of this class. At the moment, prices for a used Mercedes ML in a 164 body have become more affordable, thanks to which motorists, for whom status and prestige play an important role, can fulfill their old dream. When buying a car at the age of 7-10 years, you need to be aware that such an acquisition is fraught with additional costs. And, here's what they are, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a Mercedes ML (W164) with mileage in the secondary market, I'll tell you in this article.

A bit of history:

Work on the development of the Mercedes ML (W164) began back in 1999 and lasted 6 years. Steve Mattin worked on the car design project under the strict guidance of Peter Pfeiffer for more than 2 years. Testing of the prototype was carried out during 2003 - 2004 and ended in early 2005. The debut of the Mercedes ML (W164) took place in 2005 at the International Auto Show in North America. In April of the same year, mass production was launched. The car was assembled in the USA at the Chrysler plant located in Tuscaloosa (Alabama).

The novelty was built on a common platform with the GL-class, thanks to which it was possible to increase the size of the body and wheelbase compared to its predecessor (W163). In 2008, a restyled version of the car was presented to the public at the New York Auto Show. The main changes affected the front and rear bumpers, optics and grille ( it has been increased in size and equipped with chrome inserts along the edges). Changes also affected the lineup, albeit slightly: the diesel model ML 420 CDI was updated, ML 280 CDI was renamed ML 300 CDI, ML 320 CDI became ML 350 CDI, and ML 420 CDI became known as ML 450 CDI. In 2009, the new ML 450 Hybrid SUV was introduced at the New York Auto Show. The production of the second generation of the M-class lasted 6 years and ended in 2011, and was replaced by the car of the Mercedes-Benz W166 series.

Advantages and disadvantages of Mercedes ML (W164) with mileage

The body of the Mercedes ML (W164) has practically no weak points - it is not afraid of corrosion, but only on condition that the car was not restored after an accident. And, here, chrome elements do not tolerate the harsh realities of our winters and quickly become cloudy, after which they begin to bloom. When inspecting the car, be sure to check the tailgate, on most copies it is skewed ( the screws holding the door hinge are broken). Also, there may be problems with door locks ( breakdown of the mechanism, failures in the keyless access software "Keyless Go"). If there is moisture in the trunk, the problem most likely lies in the worn lamp seals. If you do not pay attention to this for a long time, over time, problems with the block will begin. SAM, since its electronic board is located in the right niche of the trunk.

Engine

Depending on the engine size of the Mercedes ML (W164), the corresponding index was assigned: gasoline - 3.5-ML350 (272 hp), 5.0-ML500 (308 hp), 5.5-ML550 (388 hp) 6, 2-ML 63 AMG (510 hp); diesel - 3.0-ML280 CDI, ML320 CDI (190 and 224 hp) since 2009 ML300 CDI (190 and 204 hp) ML350 CDI (224 hp), 4.0-ML420 CDI (306 hp).

Petrol

Most often in the secondary market there is a 3.5-liter gasoline power unit. Operating experience has shown that the engine is generally reliable, but, nevertheless, some shortcomings in it have been identified. As a rule, problems begin after the first 100,000 runs. The most common drawback is the wear of the cermet sprockets of the balance shaft. In the presence of a breakdown, in most cases, the error “ check engine". Also, a signal about the presence of a problem will be the “dieselization” of the motor, vibrations and metallic ringing when starting a cold engine. Another problem with characteristic symptoms is the stretching of the timing chain, this happens on a run of 100-150 thousand km.

Replacing the chain and shaft sprockets is a rather laborious process ( The motor must be removed to do the job.), because of which, the cost of work is quite high ( 1500-3000 c.u.). It is this fact that makes many owners get rid of the car at the first alarm bells ( Before buying, be sure to conduct a complete engine diagnostics). When performing repairs, it is advisable to immediately replace the chain damper, the magnets of the camshaft adjustment mechanism and the oil pump, so as not to pay twice for the removal and installation of the power unit. Often, owners of cars with a 5.5 engine (388 hp) also face the same problems, however, in this case, removing the engine is not required to eliminate most of the shortcomings, which significantly reduces the cost of repairs. Closer to a run of 150,000 km, many owners of the Mercedes ML (W164) have to change the exhaust manifold due to problems with the vacuum rods of the adjustable dampers ( on copies after 2007 release, this problem was fixed). A signal about the presence of problems will be walking speeds at idle.

All gasoline engines suffer from oil leaks, most often leaks appear on the plastic cylinder head plugs. Also, on cars with a mileage of more than 100,000 km, oil smudges can be found at the junction of the filter housing and the oil cooler heat exchanger due to a leaky seal. Owners of pre-styling cars often encountered such a problem as the “hanging” of the plastic swirl flaps of the intake manifold, which made it necessary to change the entire manifold. When using low quality fuel, catalysts die prematurely. The problem is solved by replacing them with flame arresters. The 5.0 engine proved to be the most reliable, of its shortcomings, only high fuel consumption and a high transport tax can be noted, otherwise, there are practically no complaints about it. The car uses 2 batteries, they usually last about 5 years, to replace them you will have to pay almost 100 USD. for every. Once every 100,000 km, you have to change the starter retractor relay, they ask for 40-70 USD for a replacement.

Diesel

On diesel engines, during long trips, a decrease in the life of the turbine is observed (during normal operation, the turbine nurses up to 300,000 km). The main reason for premature wear of the part lies in not the best location (installed in the place where the temperature is highest). The cost of the turbine will surprise even wealthy ML owners (about 2000 USD). Also, the rapid appearance of soot on the exhaust manifold can be attributed to the common disadvantages of diesel engines, which eventually begins to fall off and can “kill” the turbine. Significant costs may also be required if the glow plugs are not replaced in time. The fact is that when a candle burns out, it is unlikely that it will be possible to unscrew it naturally, and in order to replace them, you will have to remove the engine head and drill out the burnt candle.

If extraneous vibrations appear on the car, you need to pay attention to the crankshaft pulley clutch, it may have begun to fail. Also, due to the large weight of the power units, it is quite often necessary to change the engine mounts. Diesel engines are equipped with the Common Rail system, which is an advantage and, at the same time, a disadvantage. The advantages include the efficiency of motors. The disadvantages are the sensitivity of the system to fuel quality. If there are no good gas stations in your area, you need to be prepared for frequent expensive repairs to injectors, high pressure fuel pumps and the EGR valve.

Transmission

Mercedes ML (W164) is equipped only with 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. The automatic transmission has a number of problems, most often jerks when starting, accelerating and stopping. In most cases, flashing the transmission control unit helps to cope with this trouble. The valve body is not famous for its reliability either, its resource rarely exceeds 100,000 km. The main signal about the presence of a problem will be jerks during acceleration. If you do not contact the service in time, you will soon need to replace the clutch package. Replacing the valve body costs 1500 USD, but you can save money by buying a repair kit, in which case it will be possible to fix the problem for 500 USD. By 150,000 km of run, on most instances, the oil pump “dies”, if it is not replaced in time, then the ECM electronic control unit will fail due to high temperatures. All these defects, except for one - the leaks of the "machine" cooling tubes, were eliminated after restyling.

Among the shortcomings of the all-wheel drive system, problems with the front axle gearbox (100-150 thousand km) can be distinguished. The imminent death of the gearbox will be notified by vibrations and hum. To fix the breakdown, you will have to pay 500-700 USD. The front propeller shaft does not live much longer either. On a run of 120-170 thousand km ( depending on operating conditions) bearings begin to buzz. Often, the soundtrack can also come from the outboard bearing, which dealers, as a rule, change in tandem with the cardan shaft; for non-officials, the bearing can be changed separately. With the active use of the all-wheel drive system, the transfer case chain is stretched to 100,000 km. The disease is accompanied by cracking and grinding under stress. The razdatka, like the automatic transmission, with proper operation does not cause serious problems up to 200-250 thousand kilometers.

Features and disadvantages of the Mercedes ML suspension (W164)

Mercedes ML (W164) is presented on the market with two types of suspension - independent spring and air suspension. If we talk about which of the two types of chassis to give preference to, then, in terms of reliability, the usual suspension will be preferable, in terms of comfort - pneumatic. In a spring suspension, most often you have to change the stabilizer struts, about once every 60-70 thousand km. After 50,000 km, ball bearings begin to creak, and after 20-30 thousand km they have to be changed. Once every 100-120 thousand km, replacement is required: shock absorbers, wheel bearings and silent blocks of levers ( change assembly with levers). The rear suspension does not require intervention up to 150,000 km, only shock absorbers can be an exception ( their resource rarely exceeds 130,000 km).

Air suspension repairs will have to be done every 80-100 thousand km. The cost of one original front pneumocylinder is about 1000 USD, the rear is about 500 USD. If, in time, you do not change worn air bellows, this will negatively affect the life of the compressor, the replacement of which costs 2000-3000 USD. To check the condition of the pneuma, raise the machine to the maximum level and leave it in this position for half an hour ( the machine must not lower even one mm.).

Often, when driving on a rough road, extraneous knocks are heard from the suspension, check the fastening of the front pneumatic elements to the racks - the fasteners weaken over time and require a banal broach. The steering rack is generally reliable and can last up to 200,000 km without repair, but there have been cases when it started to flow at a range of 100-120 thousand km ( eliminated by replacing seals and seals). Weak points in the steering are: thrust ( go up to 90-110 thousand km) and the steering shaft cardan. Also, there is a complaint about the reliability of the power steering pump, when replacing the pump, it is recommended to change the tank as well, since the filter mesh quickly clogs in it. The brake system is reliable, but, due to the considerable weight of the car, the brake pads wear out quite quickly (30-35 thousand km).

Salon

The quality of finishing materials leaves an ambiguous impression. The plastic from which the central panel and other interior elements are made is of high quality and retains its original appearance for a long time. And, here, the seat trim does not correspond to the class of the car, the fact is that the seats are made of eco-leather, which cracks and begins to climb by 100,000 km. As for the electrics, over the years, it begins to present unpleasant surprises, such as malfunctions in the climate control ( “buggy” electronic damper servos), sound signal and standard audio system ( does not return disks). Eliminating even minor problems in electronics is not cheap.

Outcome:

Mercedes ML (W164) is generally a fairly reliable car, but copies made after 2009 are considered less problematic. Unfortunately, air suspension presents a lot of problems, and the cost of individual spare parts and work exceeds all reasonable limits.

Advantages:

  • Comfort suspension.
  • High quality paint finish.
  • Four-wheel drive.

Flaws:

  • High repair cost.
  • Small air suspension resource.
  • Unreliable transmission.

The first generation Mercedes-Benz M-class (W163 series) began to be produced at a newly built plant in the US state of Alabama in 1997. To avoid confusion with BMW M models, the vehicle modification indexes were changed to ML.

The "M-class" could rightly be called an SUV - it had a supporting frame and permanent all-wheel drive with a reduction gear. The model was very popular, so the capacity of the American plant was increased to 80 thousand cars a year, and in addition, the assembly of SUVs was organized in Austria, at the Magna Steyr plant.

Under the hood, the basic modification of the Mercedes-Benz ML 230 had a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine (150 hp). More powerful versions were equipped with V6 and V8 engines with a capacity of 218–292 hp. With. There were two turbodiesels - a five-cylinder 2.7 and an eight-cylinder four-liter.

At the top of the lineup was a “charged” Mercedes-Benz ML 55 AMG with a 5.4-liter “eight” (347 hp), which allowed the car to accelerate to “hundreds” in 6.7 seconds. Gearboxes - five-speed, manual or automatic, drive - only all-wheel drive.

The production of the first generation model ended in 2005, with a total of 620,000 cars produced. It is noteworthy that it was on the basis of this car that the so-called “popemobile” was created, which the Pope uses for parade trips to this day.

2nd generation (W164), 2005–2011

Introduced in 2005, the second-generation M-Class was a completely different car. He became larger, received a load-bearing body instead of a frame, lost versions with a manual transmission, and air suspension was added to the list of options. For those who like to move off the road, the Offroad-Pro package was offered with a lowering range in the transmission and locking center and rear differentials.

Four-cylinder engines for the car were no longer offered. The base gasoline Mercedes-Benz ML 350 was equipped with a V6 3.5 engine, the ML 500 modification had an eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 5.0 or 5.5 liters under the hood, and at the top of the lineup was a “charged” Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG with a V8 6.2 engine (510 hp), capable of accelerating to 100 km / h in 5.0 seconds. There were two turbodiesels: a three-liter V6 (190–231 hp), and a four-liter V8 with a capacity of 306 hp. With. All cars were equipped with seven-speed automatics.

In 2008, a slight restyling of the model was carried out, and in 2010 the Mercedes-Benz ML 450 Hybrid appeared with a 330-horsepower hybrid power plant, consisting of a V6 3.5 gasoline engine and two electric motors.

Production of second-generation machines at the plant in Alabama continued until 2011.

The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-class beloved by Russians was officially presented on the first day of December 2011 in St. Petersburg. The world premiere of the updated crossover from Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz ML (W166) took place a little earlier - in early autumn as part of the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The second generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-class W164 was successfully sold on both sides of the ocean (the two previous generations sold more than 1.2 million copies around the world) ... therefore, the designers were not going to radically change the appearance of the new Mercedes-Benz ML. As usual, the latest version of the model has slightly increased in size, while maintaining the dimensions of the base at 2915 mm. In length: +24 mm (up to 4804 mm), in width +16 mm (up to 1926 mm), and only in height the Mercedes-Benz M-class crossover "in the 166th body" became lower by 19 mm (1796 mm) .

In the M-class, there is external continuity from generation to generation. The design changes were carried out by Mercedes-Benz artists with filigree precision and accuracy, giving the new Mercedes M-Class a greater family resemblance to the rest of the concern's models.
The front part of the Mercedes ML of the third generation with an adult false radiator grille, passing into the mouth of the air intake located on the front bumper-fairing. Drops of front lighting are beautifully accentuated by LED daytime running lights located below. The shape and configuration of the aerodynamic bumper of the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class W166 seems to be trying to say about the high potential of the engines used in the crossover. The sidewalls of the car with two characteristic ribs give the body swiftness, evoking thoughts of kinship with the SLS AMG.

The body of the Mercedes-Benz ML crossover is, as before, a "station wagon", but it looks airy and light thanks to the solutions applied in the aft. Light, almost weightless rear roof pillars pass into the rear side glazing of the body. Such a decision of the stern is not inherent in any other car of this class. The roof is devoid of a dome, the tailgate is large and practical, provides access to the luggage compartment with a small loading height. Side lights with sharp edges go far to the side of the car. The rear bumper competes in aggressiveness with the front. Large wheel arches easily accommodate wheels from R17 to R21, and if desired, R22. The ML turned out to be beautiful, with a very low air drag coefficient, only 0.32 Cx.

The interior of the new Mercedes M-Class has become more spacious, the front width has increased by 34 mm, and in the back row by 25 mm. Front seats with a pronounced profile perfectly fix their riders (short and thin chairs will seem huge). Premium finishing materials, leather, polished wood are widely used. True, in the basic configuration, buyers will be waiting for soft malleable plastic (but Russians rarely buy this interior configuration). Slightly spoil the picture rustic devices with a black and white on-board computer screen. The multifunctional four-spoke steering wheel fits perfectly in your hands. In expensive versions, there is a center console with a large display (17.8 cm) of the Comand multimedia complex, and a monitor (11.4 cm) is simpler in ML. There is climate control. Ergonomics are familiar to owners of Mercedes-Benz (the article is a general review, it makes no sense to list options further, since there are really a great many of them). Passengers in the back row are not as comfortable as in the front.
The salon has not increased in length, but the backrests have been adjusted for the angle of inclination.
The luggage compartment in the traveling (five-seater) version is 690 liters, if you fold the second row seats, the volume increases to 2010 liters. It is pleasant to be inside - everything around is comfortable, light and convenient.

To talk about the technical characteristics of the third generation Mercedes-Benz ML. Front and rear independent suspension, front double wishbone, rear multi-link, with shock absorbers changing the stiffness. Optionally, the third generation Mercedes-Benz ML is equipped with the Airmatic air suspension with the initial system for changing the parameters of the Active Curve System and the advanced On and Offroad. The improved package allows you to increase the ground clearance up to 28.5 cm and forcibly select one of six driving modes (Auto, Sport, Trailer, Winter, Offroad 1 - light off-road, Offroad 2 - heavy off-road). With an advanced air suspension system, this Mercedes M-Class has serious off-road potential.
Instead of a hydraulic booster, an electric booster from ZF is now installed on all versions of the crossover.
The gearbox is familiar to Mercedes - a seven-speed automatic with an interesting and conveniently located control joystick.
All proposed third-generation Mercedes-Benz M-class are equipped with a proprietary 4 Matic all-wheel drive system. The handling and ride comfort of the new ML depends on the suspension and engine used. With a simple spring suspension and shock absorbers with a damping system, depending on the driving style, the car can be comfortable and imposing (slow driving), or collected and tough (aggressive handling). The Mercedes-Benz M-Class equipped with air suspension is very comfortable, but by customizing the suspension modes it is easy to achieve sports car furiousness.

The motors of the "third ML", according to the company's engineers, have become 25% more economical, only operating experience can confirm this. From the start of sales, the Mercedes-Benz ML will be available with three engines:

  • Turbo diesel four-cylinder 250 BlueTec 2.2 liters (204 hp),
  • Turbo diesel V-shaped "six" 350 BlueTec 3 liters (258 hp),
  • Petrol six-cylinder 350 BlueEffisiency 3.5 liters (306 hp).

With a gasoline engine (306 hp), the Mercedes-Benz ML accelerates to hundreds in 7.6 seconds and develops an impressive 235 km / h, while the average fuel consumption is negligible for a car weighing more than 2 tons - 8.5 liters! Diesel units are content with "ridiculous" 6-7 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km (in mixed mode).
There are plans to install another 450 CDI eight-cylinder diesel engine on this ML and two gasoline engines for the ML 500 and ML63 AMG.

In the US, sales of new items are in full swing, where the new diesel Mercedes ML 350 BlueTec 3 liters (258 hp) costs from $50,490. For gasoline Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueEffisiency 3.5 liters (306 hp) they ask from 48,990 American money.

Sales of luxurious and economical third-generation Mercedes-Benz ML crossovers will begin in Russia in the spring of 2012. Preliminary Russian prices are already known: diesel Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec 3 liters (258 hp) will cost from 2,990 thousand rubles, gasoline Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueEffisiency 3.5 liters (306 hp) is estimated at 2 890 thousand rubles, peremptory Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG will cost 5,220 thousand rubles

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class replaced the first-born in the spring of 2005. Engineers from Stuttgart have done a great job of creating a new crossover. The car received advanced and sophisticated technical solutions that turned into a headache for the owners of the second generation ML. The W164 was assembled at the assembly line of the Tuscaloosa plant, Alabama, USA. In March 2008, a restyled version of the M-class went on sale.

Engines

The first production MLs of the second generation were equipped with a gasoline V6 - M272 with a displacement of 3.5 liters and a power of 272 hp. (ML350), V8 - M113 5.0 l / 308 hp (ML500) and diesel V6 OM642: 3.0 l recoil 190 hp (ML280 CDI) and 224 hp (ML320 CDI). In 2006, the V8 OM629 diluted the line of diesel engines with a working volume of 4.0 liters 306 hp. And in June 2007, the flagship V8 M113 was replaced by the M273 with a power of 388 hp. (ML500 and ML550). In 2009, there was a marketing castling: the ML320 CDI model was removed from sale, and instead the ML300 CDI (190 and 204 hp) and ML350 CDI (224 hp) appeared with the same 3-liter V6 OM642.

The most widely used gasoline modifications are the ML350. The first M272 power units turned out to have significant design flaws, which were corrected at the end of 2007. So, with a run of more than 80-100 thousand km, "diesel" could appear, and later "Check Engine" would light up. Reason: wear of the balance shaft sprockets. To replace it, it is necessary to remove the engine, which is why repairs are significantly more expensive. In addition, it is necessary to change the timing chain, the tensioner with dampers and the camshaft magnets, since the chain often stretches to 100-150 thousand km, and the magnets of the camshaft position adjustment mechanism begin to “strange”. Experts recommend changing the oil pump, although there are no problems with it. For repairs in the official service, they will ask about 150-160 thousand rubles, along with spare parts. Independent selection of spare parts and replacement in a regular service will cost almost 2 times cheaper - about 80-100 thousand rubles. After finalizing the problem node, the costly trouble began to occur much less frequently. Exactly the same problem is inherent in the 273rd V8 engine. True, there, to replace the balance shaft, the removal of the engine is not required, which simplifies and reduces the cost of repairs.

With a run of more than 100-150 thousand km, some ML350 owners are faced with the need to replace the intake manifold due to problems with the vacuum damper valves. The cost of the collector is about 40,000 rubles. The node was finalized in 2007.

Plastic plugs of the engine block head begin to "poison" the oil after 40-60 thousand km. There is also oil leakage at the junction of the filter housing and the oil cooler heat exchanger - due to a leaky seal.

Diesel engines of the OM642 series pre-styling Mercedes ML suffer from a defect in the exhaust manifold. Pieces of the inner shell of the collector or welds break off and fall into the turbine. The result is serious damage to the blades and shaft of the turbine, as well as the mechanism for changing the geometry. It will take about 70-90 thousand rubles to replace two collectors. The turbine itself is tenacious, and with proper care, it easily takes care of more than 200-300 thousand km.

Transmission

All Mercedes ML engines were paired with a 7G-Tronic 722.9 automatic transmission. According to the established tradition, the "automatic" pre-styling ML W164 also had a number of problems, some of which were resolved in 2007. The electro-hydraulic control unit often "departed to another world" after 100,000 km. For a new block, you will have to pay about 60-100 thousand rubles. Problems with the valve body in some cases were caused by the failure of 2 speed sensors. Some services restored the valve body by soldering these sensors. Another common problem with a run of more than 100,000 km is the “welding” of the bushing, and the destruction of the gearbox oil pump gears, which in turn led to scoring in the housing. Less often, problems arise with the gearshift control unit (25-30 thousand rubles).

Shocks when starting, stopping or switching are the “sore” of most second-generation Mercedes MLs. Changing the software of the gearbox and engine control unit helps to cure the disease, followed by synchronization of the blocks. The cost of such a procedure is about 6-8 thousand rubles.

From time to time there are cases of failure of the front axle gearbox. The cost of its restoration is about 40,000 rubles. Less often, it becomes necessary to replace the front driveshaft. We also have to deal with the wear of the transfer case chain, which will be indicated by cod and rattle under load. The cost of the chain is about 5-6 thousand rubles, and the work to replace it is about 2-3 thousand rubles. If the razdatka buzzes, then about 40-45 thousand rubles will have to be paid for its bulkhead.

Chassis

Racks and bushings of the anti-roll bar serve about 60-80 thousand km. In the front lower arms, the weak point is the rear silent block. Replacement of the lever is provided only in the assembly. The cost of the original lever is about 22-24 thousand rubles, the analogue is from 2 to 8 thousand rubles. After 50-70 thousand km, the rear ball joints often begin to creak, while they themselves do not show signs of wear. An attempt to drive grease under the ball boot with a syringe rarely succeeds, the ball will have to be replaced. The cost of the original ball is about 10-16 thousand rubles, the analogue is about 2-4 thousand rubles. Shock absorbers of a conventional spring suspension go more than 100-150 thousand km. Wheel bearings also live that long: 8-10 thousand rubles plus 1.5-2 thousand rubles for a replacement.

The air springs of the AirMatic air suspension do not differ in durability - the resource is in the region of 80-120 thousand km. The cost of a new original air spring in specialized services is about 60-70 thousand rubles for the front, and 30-40 thousand rubles for the rear. Analogues are cheaper: about 20 thousand rubles and 11 thousand rubles, respectively. For many, over time, knocks appear in the right front of the air suspension, which disappear when the Sport mode is turned on. Often knocks do not go away even after replacing the air strut. To get rid of extraneous sounds often helps the banal broach of the bolts of the suspension arms or the nuts of the shock absorber rod to the upper strut support. If the knocks remain, then the whole thing is in the AirMatic suspension control unit (about 30,000 rubles).

Over time, the steering ML begins to knock. In most cases, the cause lies in the wear of the outboard bearing or steering cardan. The cost of eliminating the cause in an ordinary car service is low, about 4-7 thousand rubles, in authorized services it is more expensive - about 15 thousand rubles. With a run of more than 100-150 thousand km, sometimes there are problems with the steering rack. The cost of a new rail for officials is about 110-160 thousand rubles. There are also cases of failure of the power steering pump on pre-styling copies. The cost of a new original pump is about 30,000 rubles, an analogue is about 10,000 rubles.

Body and interior

The body of the Mercedes ML, in the best traditions of German quality, has a good paintwork and is not prone to corrosion. A chrome package, on the other hand, can bloom in just a few winters. Mirror elements and LED daytime running lights are often the prey of "car robbers".

There are cases of skew of the tailgate due to the destruction of the screws holding the door hinge. At the same time, when driving through irregularities, a roar appears. After 100,000 km, problems arise with the fifth door lock due to a breakdown of the mechanism or software “glitches”. In winter, the key to open the tailgate often sticks.

There are frequent problems with door locks, aggravated in winter. Preventive measures, such as lubricating moving parts, help to slightly extend the life of the lock. Often, the closing of the door lock is prevented by a breaking and flying rubber band, inside which the lock rod runs. The cost of a new gum is about 1,000 rubles. Another equally common reason: the destruction of the spring in the lock. A repair kit is available to replace broken springs. In extreme cases, you have to change the lock itself. Official services ask for a new lock about 15 thousand rubles and 5 thousand rubles for work. Additional problems are added by the Keyless Go keyless entry system. Due to the loss of tightness of the special coating on the inside of the handle, moisture gets inside and the electrical contacts are oxidized, which leads to failures. The cost of a new pen is about 4-5 thousand rubles.

Over time, the seals of the rear lights lose their tightness, which contributes to the ingress of moisture into the trunk. In the right niche there is a rear block SAM, which water procedures are contraindicated. The electrical board oxidizes, and all kinds of "glitches" of electricians appear. The cost of the new unit is about 20 thousand rubles.

Salon ML is assembled from high-quality materials, and therefore crickets are very rare here. Exception: luggage cover and rear seat backrest. On some instances, there is abrasion of the leather of the steering wheel. Under the mats, in the legs, there are electronic control units for various systems. Often in winter, melted snow from the rugs falls on the floor and further into blocks that are not airtight. Electrical boards oxidize and numerous problems appear. The cost of a new block is about 20,000 rubles.

Problems with the correct functioning of the air conditioning system are associated with “glitches” in the software of the KLA control unit. After the update, the climate performance is restored. Less often you have to change the block itself - about 46-50 thousand rubles.

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz ML W164 actually proved to be a little more reliable than its predecessor. It is gratifying that the manufacturer tried to solve design flaws in individual units and assemblies. Unfortunately, a lot of problems arise with the electrician. And the cost of individual parts and work exceeds all reasonable limits.
