In this computer lesson, you will learn what a desktop, tray, language bar is. You will learn how to adjust the size of icons and their sorting on the desktop.

After turning on the computer and booting the system appears. Various elements can be placed on the desktop: folders, shortcuts, icons, files, and so on. This element of the operating system (OS) allows you to make it more convenient to access frequently used data. For example, if you often play a game or work with some program, then it is more convenient to launch it from the desktop than to go into the folder where it is installed every time.

Thus, on the desktop you can place all frequently used files to work with them. But we will learn how to place these elements in the next lessons, when we can install programs ourselves and work with folders and files.

Task bar

At the bottom of the screen is task bar. This panel contains start menu(lower left corner of the screen), date and time (bottom right corner of the screen), tray(icons to the left of the date and time) and Language bar(to the left of the tray).

Clicking on a date or time will open the calendar. Next to it, in the tray, are the icons of some programs. Usually, there are icons for programs that run when the operating system boots.

The language bar is needed so that you can switch the input language from the keyboard. On your keyboard there are buttons on which letters are drawn in Russian and English alphabets. Depending on which language is currently selected in the language bar, when you press a keyboard key, a Russian or English character will be written. You can switch the language by pressing the keyboard buttons. Simultaneously press “ctrl” + “shift” or “alt” + “shift” (it all depends on the settings of the operating system), then release these keys and watch how the language changes on the language bar.

Next to the start menu on the taskbar, are all running programs or open folders. This makes it easier for you to move from one folder to another when they are arranged in one place. Now there is an icon of the Internet browser through which you are reading this lesson.

Start Menu, we will look at it in detail in the next lesson.

Helpful advice

It is better to place program shortcuts on the desktop. A shortcut is not the program itself, but only a link to it. If you accidentally delete a shortcut icon, the program will remain unaffected and you can then create a new shortcut for it. It is also needed in order to avoid overloading the local disk on which the operating system of your computer is located. Those. you can store all programs and work files on other local drives, and manage them through shortcuts located on your desktop.

To create a shortcut, right-click on the desired folder or program, select "Create Shortcut" from the menu that opens, and left-click. Now move the shortcut icon to the desktop.

You can make any of your photo or picture as the desktop background. To do this, use an alternative method - open the photo you need by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button, then right-click on the photo field and select "Set as desktop background" in the menu that opens.

Customizing the desktop

The desktop is a virtual space on the monitor that displays icons for programs, working folders, and document files that the user needs for quick access. In essence, this is your personal workplace, which can be customized in such a way that it is functional, comfortable and pleasing to the eye. Various elements can be placed on the desktop: folders, shortcuts, icons, files, etc.

So, let's figure out how to customize the desktop.

Right-click on an empty space on the desktop - a context menu will open. Here, in the "View" section, you can adjust the size of the icons that will be placed on the desktop.

The "Sort" section allows you to organize the icons on the desktop - this is especially important in cases where there are a lot of icons and programs on the desktop. Note that the "Sort" button allows you to set the order in which the icons will be located (the beginning of the desktop - the upper left corner of the screen).

By selecting the "Create" section, you can create a file, folder or any document on the desktop.

The "Paste" option is also located here, which will give you the opportunity to place the previously copied file on the desktop.

In the "Screen Resolution" section, you can set the screen resolution. On any computer, by default, the optimal screen settings are set (look for the inscription “recommended” next to the screen resolution value). For a 17-inch monitor, the optimal resolution is 1024x768, for a 19-inch monitor - 1280x1024 or 1400x1050.

In addition, you can increase the size of text and other screen elements. This is necessary for people who can't see well. Click on the link "Make text and other elements larger or smaller" and set the proportion of elements to increase. Click the "Apply" button - after that, the system will ask you to log out of your account and log in again, after your new login, the icons and text will increase or decrease.

In the "Personalization" section, you can change the theme of the desktop menu and computer folders.

A desktop theme is a wallpaper (picture), a set of sounds, icons and other elements used to customize the appearance of the desktop with one click. Hover over the theme you like, click on it with the left mouse button, and after clicking on the “Apply” button, the option you have chosen will immediately be displayed on your desktop.

The "Desktop" tab allows you to change the background image (picture, wallpaper) in a given theme. You can always choose a picture from the proposed set. However, if you want to put your own photo or a photo of your children, pets or grandchildren on the screensaver - this is also really possible! To do this, click on the "Browse" button, which will allow you to access your own files. Choose the picture you want. After the name of your object appears in the "File name" field, click "Open". In the “Location” option, set the location of the image by choosing one of the options offered to you: centered, tiled, stretched.

If you like a "clean" desktop, then select "None" in the list of themes and in the "Color" option, select a color for the desktop background.

Without leaving the "Desktop" tab, click "Desktop Settings". After that, your computer will open the "Desktop Items" window - to customize the table, you need to select the "General" tab. What does this give us?

In the window that opens, you can turn system icons on and off (this is done when you check or uncheck the corresponding boxes). If desired, you can change the graphic image of the icons using the "Change Icon" button. In the lower part of the window, you can configure automatic control of cleaning the desktop from unused items. If you do not need this, then simply do not check the box for managing the option.

If instead of a background image you want to see a page from the Internet on your desktop, then go to the "Web" tab. And to prohibit changing and moving desktop elements, check the box for controlling the option “Lock desktop elements”. Save the changes with the "OK" button.

Also in the menu tab there are checkboxes for the items "Display home screen icons" and "Display home screen gadgets". By installing and removing them, you can make your screen look clean.

There is always a trash can on the desktop. It contains all the data that you want to delete from the computer. The Recycle Bin is an intermediate stage of deletion, you can permanently delete or restore all the items that fall into it.

What else is on the computer screen? For example, the taskbar. It is located at the bottom of the screen and contains the START button (or Windows stash) - usually in the lower left corner of the screen, and the date and time - in the lower right corner of the screen.

If you click on a date or time, a calendar will open. Here we can set the date and time, we can set an additional clock or change the time zone.

The language bar allows you to switch the keyboard input language. We have already said how to do this, but we can repeat it again - you can click on the panel with the mouse, or you can use the keyboard.

Remember that on your keyboard there are buttons on which letters in the Russian and English alphabets are indicated. Depending on which language is currently selected in the language bar, when you press a keyboard key, a Russian or English character will be written. You can switch the language by pressing the keyboard buttons. Simultaneously press Alt+Shift.

Next to the clock and date is the battery icon (if we are talking about a laptop) - it shows the charge level. By clicking on it, you can get additional information about the charge and adjust the brightness of the screen.

Remember that to carry out any operations to select specific options, we need to press the left mouse button. When the context menu windows open, we see a set of options that we can change. In order to enable or disable this or that option, you need to check or uncheck the box next to it.

Also note that if an option is grayed out on your context menu, then it is currently inactive and cannot be influenced.

And a few more useful tips, following which will make your work on your PC easier.

As we have already said, there are different programs on your desktop. It is best to place program shortcuts here, and not the programs themselves. What is the difference? Let's clarify that a shortcut is not directly the program itself, but only a link to it. By clicking on the shortcut, you will open the desired program in the same way, and if you accidentally delete the shortcut icon, the program will remain unaffected, and then you can create a new shortcut for it. It is also needed in order to avoid overloading the local disk on which the operating system of your computer is located. That is, you can store all programs and work files on other local drives, and manage them through shortcuts located on your desktop.

To create a shortcut, right-click on the desired folder or program, select "Create Shortcut" from the menu that opens, and left-click. Now move the shortcut icon to the desktop.

As we have already said, you can make any of your photos or pictures as the desktop background. You can do this through the "Personalization" tab, or you can do it in another way. To do this, open the photo you need by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button, then right-click on the photo field, and select "Set as desktop background" in the menu that opens.
