The Chinese automaker Changan is just beginning to seriously expand its Russian market, its "local" the lineup not big yet. In addition to the two “firstborns” - sedans, the Chinese also sell in Russia the “city SUV” Changan CS35, with which, in fact, they pin their main hopes.
But the Chinese have very ambitious plans, which means that the car must be appropriate. However – is this so?
From an aesthetic point of view, the Changan CS35 is quite good; fortunately, the Chinese did not work alone on the appearance of the crossover, but in company with Italian designers. But at the same time, despite the excellent dynamism of the exterior, the design of the new product is oversaturated with conspicuous details; the Chinese were too keen to please customers and make their brainchild stand out on the road.
Judge for yourself, the car received an original radiator grille that extends onto the hood; curvy front and rear optics; sports bumpers with a mesh air intake at the front; stylish foglights; dynamic stamping along the body profile; an ascending window sill line that smoothly transitions into the rear side glass, inscribed in the pillar; rear door spoiler and original rear window with eye-catching profile.
As for the dimensions, the Changan CS35 is very compact. The length of its body is only 4160 mm, the length of the wheelbase fits within the framework of 2560 mm, the width of the crossover does not exceed 1810 mm, and the height rests at 1670 mm. The ground clearance of the CS35 is 180 mm, which is quite acceptable for city conditions. The curb weight of the subcompact crossover is 1345 or 1365 kg, depending on the configuration.
The five-seater cabin of the Changan CS35 is decorated well, neatly and modernly. In the basic modification, fabric and soft plastic are generously used for finishing, and in the “top” versions, artificial leather is used as seat upholstery.
No one should have any particular complaints about the ergonomics of the front panel, but in general the interior is far from ideal, and first of all this concerns free space, which is especially lacking in the rear.
In addition, the crossover’s seats turned out to be quite mediocre, on which you won’t feel much comfort on long trips. The negative picture is complemented by poor sound insulation, so the music will have to be turned up louder or you will have to “enjoy” the howl of the gearbox.
The trunk of the Changan CS35, for a car of this size, is quite good and can accommodate up to 337 liters of cargo in standard condition or 1251 liters with the rear row of seats folded.
Specifications. There is only one engine for the Changan CS35, but there are two gearboxes: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.
Under the hood of the crossover is a 1.6-liter BlueCore engine, developed by the British design division of the Chinese automaker. The engine is made of aluminum, has four in-line cylinders with a total volume of 1598 cm³, and is equipped with multi-point injection with electronically controlled, fully meets the requirements of the Euro-4 environmental standard, and its maximum power is 113 hp. or 83 kW at 6000 rpm. The peak torque of this engine is 152 Nm and is available in the range from 4000 to 5000 rpm.
In case of aggregation power plant with a manual transmission, the average fuel consumption is stated at 6.8 liters, and when installing an automatic transmission it increases to 7.2 liters per 100 km. As for the acceleration dynamics, the Changan CS35 reaches the first hundred on the speedometer in 14.0 seconds in the manual version and in 15.0 seconds in the automatic version. The maximum speed in both cases is 180 km/h.
The Changan CS35 crossover is built on a front-wheel drive platform, so there is no all-wheel drive system even as an option, which, undoubtedly, can be written down as obvious disadvantages of the new product, which hopes for serious competition with other representatives of the class. The front suspension of the Changan CS35 crossover is completely independent, based on MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, the Chinese installed a semi-independent torsion beam with coil springs. Disc brakes are used on all wheels, while the front ones are also ventilated. In addition, double-circuit brake system supplemented with ABS, BAS and EBD, as well as a mechanical parking brake drive. Steering new items rack and pinion, supplemented by an electric booster.
Options and prices. On the Russian market, the 2016-2017 Changan CS35 is sold in two trim levels - “Comfort” and “Luxe”. For the basic version the minimum asking price is 747,900 rubles, and for the “top” version – 784,900 rubles (the surcharge for the “automatic” in both cases is 86,000 rubles).
The crossover is standardly equipped with two front airbags, a six-speaker radio, ESP, electric windows on all doors, ABS, EBD, heated front seats, air conditioning, electric drive and heated mirrors, 16-inch wheel rims, fog lights and power steering.
The most “packed” version is complemented by side airbags (their total number up to six pieces), an electric sunroof, a multifunction steering wheel, leather interior trim, cruise control, a 12-volt outlet, 17-inch alloy wheels and some other current bells and whistles.
A small crossover from the Middle Kingdom Changan CS35 2017-2018 in a new body (photos, configurations, specifications, prices, video and test drive) has undergone a planned restyling. After this event, the car received a more modern exterior, an improved interior and a new engine line.

Having replaced the generation, the front-wheel drive crossover Changan CS35 acquired a more solid and austere appearance. It’s tempting to say that the SUV has matured and gotten rid of the toy appearance of its predecessor. The exterior design of the body shows sporty notes, flavored with brutal details.
The front end of the new generation of the CS35 model features a compact slot in the false radiator grille, stylish LED headlights (offered as an option) and a solid bumper, complemented by fog lights, a lower air intake section and a massive plastic lining made of unpainted plastic.
From the side, the body of the new Chinese compact crossover defiantly displays square-shaped wheel arches, rear-view mirrors mounted on powerful legs, a floating rear roof pillar and a generally well-built body with compact overhangs, a moderately long hood, large side doors and a compact rear.
The rear part of the body looks just perfect stylistically: a large rectangle of the tailgate with compact glass topped with a spoiler, a stylish LED garland of side lighting equipment, stretching across the entire width of the body, a compact and neat bumper, almost completely clad in a protective suit made of plastic that is resistant to minor damage.
As stated at the beginning of the review, the new Changan CS35 has become noticeably larger, which, by the way, underwent an update in China last spring: the increase in length is 165 mm and in width - 15 mm, and the wheelbase has increased by 40 mm. But the body height of the new product has decreased by 10 mm.

Having carefully examined the photo of the interior, we come to the conclusion that there have been no fundamental changes inside the crossover. There is a familiar steering wheel, a mechanical parking brake drive (an electric handbrake drive is an option), a modified architecture of the front panel and center console, new door cards and seats with more expressive lateral support.

The Changan CS35 crossover is built on a modernized front-wheel drive “trolley” of its predecessor, the first-generation model with front independent suspension (MacPherson struts) and rear semi-independent suspension (torsion beam). Electric power steering, disc brakes on all wheels.

I will say that the Changan CS35 is currently the best Chinese car on the Russian market in terms of the level of finishing, execution, detailing, quality and even design. However, all this is at a budget level, which can be compared with inexpensive models from Korean manufacturers. So, I will try to list all the pros and cons that I identified during the test drive.
1) pleasant appearance. Few would argue that the design of this crossover was a great success: smooth modern lines, sporty aggressive appearance, symmetrical proportions, etc. Only some people find similarities in appearance with the premium crossover of the famous brand - Mercedes-Benz GLK. Well, that can be forgiven.
2) The interior finishing is superior to almost all other Chinese models supplied to our market. It's nice to be in the salon. Of course, there are small problems, such as the on-board computer being hard to read - on a sunny day you can hardly see what is written there. Also faded plastic on the airbag. Then some plastic panels differ in color - a trifle, and not entirely pleasant.
3) Not a small ground clearance of 180 mm is quite relevant for our roads, and climbing onto the curb and going out into nature is not a problem with the Changan. The downside is that it is only front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive modifications are simply not provided.
4) Prices. In terms of cost, Changan is not really a cheap Chinese product, since the maximum configuration with leather and sunroof will cost 700,000 rubles for which you can buy a more famous competitor like Renault Duster and also at maximum speed. The basic version for 600 thousand rubles is also nicely equipped and has all the necessary equipment - air conditioning, ABS, etc. You can’t buy a non-Chinese crossover for this money.
5) Engine and gearbox. Under the hood of the Changan CS35 there is an unremarkable but reliable naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine, paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. I drove the version with automatic transmission, and I really didn’t like how loud the engine made noise and growled when accelerating, keeping the speed at least 4000 rpm. In terms of dynamics, the car is frankly rather weak both in feel and on paper. According to the passport, acceleration from zero to hundreds takes 14 seconds, and maximum speed equal to - 180 km/h. Perhaps in half an hour it will accelerate to 180 km/h)
Drawing a conclusion, we can say that the CS35 model is quite good option for purchase, but it would also be useful to compare it with other crossovers on the market today. There are quite a few of them now.
