McAfee Internet Security (2017) shares many security features with standalone antivirus. The built-in firewall correctly switches ports to hidden mode and resists web attacks. Like most other password managers, True Key captures credentials when you fill them out on secure sites and automatically fills them in when you visit them again. TrueKey's toolbar doesn't have a convenient menu like some competitors, but instead displays a main window from which you can launch saved websites.
It is possible to save personal data in the Wallet, but it will not be used to fill out forms. The main reason to use wallet and secure notes is to sync data between devices.
TrueKey supports a very rare feature. If your computer has a front-facing camera, you can use facial recognition to unlock your Windows account. TrueKey doesn't support advanced features like secure sharing, automatic password changes, or digital legacy, but it beats the competition in the area of multifactor authentication.
Crude parental control system
Parental controls are an additional component of McAfee Internet Security (2017); they are not included in the standalone antivirus. For each Windows account that your child owns, you can set blocking categories, set up Internet usage schedules, and view an activity report. Therefore, the tool's capabilities are limited compared to its competitors. It is noteworthy that the parental control manual states that it does not work correctly in virtual machines. This is quite unusual; the systems had to be tested on a physical machine.
To get started, you need to set a password that will protect against unauthorized disabling of monitoring by a child. The settings window displays a list of all accounts and offers to set up parental controls for each child account. If a child is using an account with administrator rights, McAfee will display a warning. In order to set up a content filter, you need to select one of 5 age profiles. Each profile determines which of 20 content categories will be blocked. Internet Usage Scheduler is very inconvenient. The weekly grid allows you to configure access in 30-minute intervals. While many parental controls allow you to drag and drop grid cells, McAfee only lets you fill one time slot at a time. The grid does not support automatic scrolling and is so large that you cannot select more than 7 o'clock. This feature can be made easier to use. On the positive side, the schedule is not sensitive to changes in the system time - the child will not be able to bypass the protection.
A simple parental control report lists all blocked domains along with their category. McAfee logs all attempts to use the Internet during prohibited hours.
Highly accurate spam filter
The value of local anti-spam systems is rapidly declining as email services evolve. If you use an email service that doesn't provide antispam protection, local protection can be very important.
McAfee Antispam has integration with Outlook, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. The product adds a toolbar to these mailers and automatically redirects spam to a separate folder. If you use Eudora or The Bat!, you will have to set up a rule to filter out unwanted emails.
McAfee filters spam in POP3 and Exchange accounts and does not work with IMAP. However, the product can process webmail spam directly, which is quite unusual. Of course, in the old days this feature would have been very useful, but now it is difficult to find a service that does not itself provide spam filtering. The user can view messages filtered by McAfee directly in the application and, if necessary, restore personal messages.
McAfee offers five levels of protection for its spam filter - from minimal, which reduces the risk of false positives but gets more spam into your inbox, to strict, which blocks messages from all unknown recipients. It is better to leave the default protection level - Balanced.
The user can set his own filtering rules, but it is difficult to imagine cases when this is necessary. The friends list contains addresses and domains that are trusted. You can manually edit this list, add friends from your email client toolbar, and add all contacts from your friends list. There's also an option to automatically block messages in languages you don't speak.
To test the antispam, a Yahoo account was added. McAfee automatically selected the correct mail server address and port. However, when entering the password, an error message appeared. In fact, the password was correct, but Yahoo refused authorization and sent an alert about an attempt to connect a potentially unsafe application. I had to go into Yahoo settings and enable access for less secure applications.
If you need a local spam filter, McAfee can handle your protection needs. While many similar products only work with POP3, McAfee supports Exchange and even Web mail.
Small impact on performance
When testing the product, we did not notice any performance drops. Performance tests confirmed the subjective sensations.
McAfee slowed down the boot time of the test computer by all of 3 percent. If you reboot your PC frequently, you won't notice the impact of McAfee.
Given that the new Real Protect antivirus technology only begins analyzing a file when attempting to run it, minimal impact of the product on file operations was expected.
