DIY Christmas wreaths. How to make a New Year's wreath out of paper with your own hands step by step A wreath made of colored paper for the New Year

New Year is a holiday highly revered in our country. This is a new stage of life, many believe that with the advent of next year, changes are bound to happen. And they depend on how you spend this holiday. There is even a proverb among the people: “how you celebrate the New Year is how you will spend it.” On this holiday, it is customary to prepare many different dishes, clean the house and decorate it in every possible way. Even without following traditions, people still decorate their homes before this holiday, since decorations are the harbingers of the holiday. They create a special atmosphere, create a New Year's mood and allow you to surprise guests with the skill of the owner. Today we will dedicate the day to create a DIY New Year's wreath with you.

Decorations are harbingers of the holiday

For the New Year's Eve, a wreath will be an excellent decorative element.

Wreaths are made from anything

In our country, it is customary to make a wreath as a New Year's decoration. However, it has a certain history and symbolism. This decoration came to us from Western countries, where it is a symbol of Christmas. And its real name is “Advent wreath”. Its invention is believed to date back to 1839, and is attributed to the hands of Johann Hinrich Wichern. A Hamburg theologian and Lutheran raised children from a poor family. With the onset of winter, they often asked their mentor if Christmas would come soon (and according to Catholic traditions it is December 25). So that the pupils could count down the days until Christmas, he made a wreath from an old wheel, branches from the garden and satin ribbons, and put 24 small red candles and 4 large white ones in it. Every day the children lit one candle, and on Sunday, along with the small one, they also lit a large white candle. So on December 24, the last candle was burned on Christmas Eve, which indicated the coming of Christmas.

This version is the most famous. However, there is information about ancient Germanic settlements where such wreaths were made before Christmas. The ancient Slavs made similar wreaths from ears of corn and hung them on the door at the entrance. They considered him a talisman and revered him very much. But there is no exact information about what these wreaths looked like and what symbolism they carried. In the old days, the Ukrainian Slavs, for example, used the didukh decoration as a symbol of Christmas. This is a sheaf of straw, which was installed in the corner of the house under the icon. It was considered a talisman, a symbol of wealth, prosperity and preservation of the ancestral family.

In modern traditions, the Christmas wreath has lost its symbolism and is used as a decoration. Often, fir branches, holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are used to make it. These plants are famous for their ability to stay green all winter. In addition, there is a belief that if two lovers kiss under a wreath of mistletoe on Christmas night, their life together will be full of happiness. So, this decoration is hung above the front door or placed on a festive table. In the second case, candles are often used to light them on New Year's or Christmas night.

In general, this tradition is typical for Western countries. However, we also find it in our country as a decoration. Only here it does not carry any special symbolism, and wreaths are made not for Christmas, but as a New Year’s decoration. They look very attractive. We propose to create this miracle.

The New Year's wreath has its own history and symbolism

There are several stories of the appearance of the wreath

General principles

Although the Christmas wreath is recognizable in any form, it has its own modification in different countries. So in Scotland we will see pieces of tartan fabric on the product along with spruce branches. American decorations use red ribbons, maintaining the country's traditional Christmas combination of red and green. In France we see wreaths with dried flowers intertwined. We use all available means. So you can see on your neighbors’ doors wreaths made of socks, ties, tinsel, and of course traditional fir branches.

For each country the wreath has its own modification

The purpose of all wreaths is the same, only the modifications differ

Red ribbons are used in American jewelry

But regardless of their modifications, Christmas wreaths have a common creation principle. Only the tools and materials used differ; in some cases, the number of stages and principles of creation may differ. Let's divide the work into several stages.

materials

tools

Preparatory

Prepare everything you need

Depends on the type

Pliers, thread, glue, scissors

Creating the Foundation

Make a circle for the wreath

Wire, cardboard

Pliers, scissors

Preparation of decorative elements

Cut off the required amount of tinsel or spruce branches, string candies onto a thread, etc.

Candies, tinsel, Christmas tree decorations, fir branches, ribbons, pine cones, etc.

Scissors, glue, threads, varnish, paint

Preliminary layout

Create a composition without fixing it

Finished circle, material chosen as a base

Final stage

Lock all elements to the base

All finished parts of the composition

Glue, threads, tape, wire

We see the main stages of creating a composition. We will follow them as we work. Let's start making holiday decorations by looking at different types of New Year's wreaths.

Making your own wreath is easy if you follow the instructions.

Any available means can be used for a wreath

Various options

We offer you a variety of options for making New Year's wreaths. You will be surprised what materials are used and how many modifications of wreaths there are. We have already said that the principle of their creation is similar, but only the external design differs. And the ring for the New Year's wreath on the table is approximately the same for different options. There are two most used types: wire base and cardboard base. Of course, you can make a circle out of paper, wood, foam, or not use a base at all. However, the use of cardboard or wire will help make the product more durable. So, let's start with the basics.

A wreath can be made from cardboard

The wreath ring can be made of metal or cardboard

The use of wire can make the wreath more durable

Wreath ring

First, decide on the size of the future wreath. It depends on its location. If you plan to decorate the table, remember that it should be neat and not interfere with the food, but at the same time noticeable at the holiday.

So, first, draw a circle on a piece of paper that matches the size of your future wreath. Now cut the amount of wire to fit the circumference. We calculate its size using the presented formula:

Where C corresponds to the circumference, n is a mathematical constant equal to 3.14, r is the radius of the circle. You can measure the radius with a ruler and calculate the required wire length using the proposed formula. You can also use another method, and by applying the wire to the sketch of the circle, determine the required length. It’s even easier to form a circle “on the fly” without precise calculations.

In any case, we have decided on the length. Now twist its ends using pliers to form a circle. Depending on what the next layers are made of, wind one or two more layers of wire, fastening them all together. Ready.

The cardboard ring is made without a blank. A circle of the required diameter is drawn on a sheet of cardboard. Next, a certain distance from the outer line is set aside at four points of the circle (so that the inner one turns out even). The inner circle is drawn using the marked points. Now we remove it without disturbing the external one. So we only have the headband left. These are the rings for the New Year's wreath, on which decorative elements are attached.

Now the base is ready, and with its use we can start making Christmas decorations using various materials.

First of all, you need to decide on the size of the wreath.

It’s much easier to make a wreath on the go, rather than counting every centimeter

Christmas tree branches

It is worth paying tribute to tradition. The symbol of the New Year, and in Western countries, where this tradition came to us, and Christmas, is the New Year tree. A wreath made of fir branches is perfect as a decoration for a door, window, or table.

To create it, use both wire and cardboard bases. It is better to wrap the latter in a thick layer of paper to add volume. Now we prepare the decorative part. Take spruce or pine branches (with short needles), cut them into small pieces, prepare glue and yarn. Additionally, you can use pine cones, satin bows, artificial berries, bells, etc. But don’t overdo it. It is advisable to mix no more than three colors (in our case, green, red and gold).

Now let's start with the layout. It is carried out in two ways.

Regarding fasteners, you can:

  1. tie the branches to the base using threads;
  2. glue them using polymer glue.

The most popular is a wreath made of spruce branches

Toys, pine cones, and ribbons are suitable for decorating a wreath.

To create such a wreath, you can use cardboard and wire.

As for the appearance, we make the wreath in the following variations.

  1. “Russed”, arranging the branches in a chaotic manner. To do this they must be short. Place them on the glue so that they stick up. Fill in the gaps and add braid, pine cones, etc.
  2. “Smooth” compared to the first option. To do this, we tie the ring so that the branches are on both sides, and they are attached to the inside of the ring. This way they will be directed in one direction (from the inside to the outside), and we will get a relatively smooth and voluminous wreath. For this option you will need flexible and long branches.

A wreath of holly, fir or mistletoe is made in the same way. You can find it in flower shops or grow it in the garden. This amazing plant also remains green throughout the year.

The wreath can be made smooth by placing the branches in one direction

By arranging the branches in a chaotic order, you can get a voluminous wreath

Natural materials

Other natural materials that are quite suitable for making a New Year's wreath for the table with your own hands include pine cones, acorns, nuts, tangerines (dried), and berries.

For these materials, it is better to use a cardboard base, tying it with a large layer of paper or fabric (for volume). The best way to secure it is with glue.

You can make a wreath made entirely of pine cones. So, paint them the same color, different ones, or leave them natural brown. The pine cones also make excellent company for tangerines and cinnamon sticks. Gifts from a squirrel - nuts and acorns - look good together.

It is better to dilute such compositions with green color, using natural green leaves or a few sprigs of pine needles. It will also work well to keep the entire composition brown by adding twine or burlap to it.

Natural materials can be used for decoration

Pine cones are perfect for decorating a wreath

For natural materials it is better to use a cardboard base

Fabric and thread

By the way, about burlap. Use it yourself too. This is a great material for creating a warm, rustic atmosphere.

Create a wreath using burlap squares. We cut out identical squares and modify them as desired. We suggest folding them, turning the edges, and placing them overlapping each other. This way fill the entire circle. Add some greenery and a bright bow to the composition.

Another option. Cut a long piece of not very stiff burlap, fold it in half and sew it together. Then, using a needle and thread, sew a stitch down the center, gathering the fabric a little (to create an “accordion”). Here we have an airy and light wreath. Use it without a base, or secure the resulting element on a cardboard ring, diluting it with decorative elements (bells, stars, berries, etc.).

We present an original idea using threads. A wreath of colorful balls. This option looks great both on the door and on the table, symbolizing home comfort and warmth. It is made as follows.

Make balls of wool of varying sizes. The threads should be woven as freely as possible to make the balls light. Then sew or glue the resulting balls to the cardboard base in a chaotic manner, quite tightly. Knit a small fabric from the same threads. Sew it to several balls and stick the knitting needles. This idea looks creative and adds a special coziness.

You can use fabric and thread to decorate the wreath

This wreath looks very beautiful and gives the room a special atmosphere.

Tinsel and Christmas tree toys

New Year's tinsel is a material that is found in every home and is a symbol of the New Year. It will also make a wonderful Christmas wreath.

Here we will use a wire base. It is enough to wrap a large amount of rain around it to create a voluminous silhouette, and the wreath is ready. We dilute it with cones, acorns, sweets, and New Year's balls. By combining several colors of New Year's tinsel, you will get a wreath with a pattern that does not require additional elements.

The mentioned New Year's balls, like other Christmas tree decorations, can be used independently. The principle is the same. Secure them to the wire frame with a thread, and the wreath is ready.

There are also many ideas: use pasta, socks, ties, beans, clothespins, sweets... In general, whatever comes to your mind. The main thing is to have a festive mood while working.

Decorating a house with a Christmas and New Year's wreath is a very beautiful custom that came to us from Western countries. Just a few years ago, such wreaths looked quite exotic in Russia. But today this is an absolutely typical type of home decoration in the days before Christmas, which is made from spruce branches and four candles, fixed vertically or placed on a table. According to Catholic custom, the first candle is lit on the first Sunday of the four-week fast - Advent, the second on the next Sunday, and so on.

This fragile wreath was made from Christmas tree decorations and frost. Just shine.

You can also use artificial spruce branches to make a wreath; it is not necessary to destroy the trees.

Rowan twigs, dried flowers and pine spruce branches - your wreath will be the very best.

Christmas wreaths owe their appearance to the Hamburg Lutheran theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern, who took in children from poor families. During Lent they kept asking when Christmas would come. And in order to make it easy for children to count down the time until the holiday, Wichern in 1839 made a wreath based on an old wheel, which was decorated with nineteen small red and four large white candles. Every morning one small candle was lit in the wreath, and on Sundays a large one was added to them.

The symbolism of Christmas wreaths has several main meanings. At first, the addition of fire and light in the wreaths symbolized the growing anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ - the light of the world. To everything was added the interpretation of the round shape, the symbolism of the wreath, determined by the spruce greenery, the colors of candles and decorative ribbons acquired additional meaning. Thus, Christmas wreaths and four candles began to be associated with the meaning of the globe and the four cardinal directions. The circle is considered to be a symbol of eternal life, which Sunday gives, the green color is the embodiment of life itself, and candles are the light that illuminates the world on Christmas days. In Christmas traditions, wreaths are usually decorated with three purple candles and one pink candle, which corresponds to the liturgical colors of worship during the Advent period. The pink candle is lit during the third week of Advent, when Sunday is called Gaudete, or Rejoice!

And such a bright wreath can be made from bright scraps of fabric. Below the picture you will find a detailed master class.

DIY New Year's wreath

Of course, today you can buy these symbolic wreaths anywhere. But what could be better, more reverent and even more majestic, how to make a New Year's wreath with your own hands and decorate your pre-holiday home with it. This will hide the real mystery of waiting for a miracle, although it would seem that this is just handicraft, the result of which will be a New Year's toy, of which there are already many. After all, few people observe fasting, and very few adhere to the ritual of lighting candles.

Is this an artificial tree or a real one? I don’t see the difference, but I’ll make the wreath as if it were artificial, why kill a living tree?

But in the process of making this beauty, a person subconsciously becomes imbued with the sacredness of the action and, to top off the work, is completely overwhelmed with the feeling of the triumph of the holiness of the upcoming event. As for the degree of complexity of making a wreath, there is nothing difficult about it. In addition, you should not deny yourself the joy of doing joint creativity with your children. And after determining the type of wreath and preparing the necessary materials, you can begin work without any doubt.

From a tie, feathers, balloons, there are so many wreaths!

So, the main thing in a wreath is the base, its base, which will keep the decoration from falling apart. The base is created from any suitable item. The classic base is natural raw materials in the form of straw, twigs, vines and even the rim of a wooden wheel. At worst, you can use wire. But in practice, any available material is used as the basis for a wreath. This will create an excellent base from wires twisted and secured in the form of a circle (for example, a simple extension cord). A piece of hose, thick cardboard that can be glued together from several layers of thinner ones, newspapers compressed into bundles and fixed with a thin wire, fabric in the form of a roller filled with cotton wool or padding polyester, and similar materials are also suitable.

You can also make a wreath that will be a decoration “for centuries” if you use artificial spruce branches and then periodically change the decor. By the way, you can decorate a wreath not only with the usual New Year’s decorations, but also with everything that your imagination can tell you. For example - dried flowers, pine cones, berries, fruits, vegetables, cinnamon sticks, spices, spiral-cut citrus peels, cayenne pepper, tangerines, apples, artificial and fresh flowers, candies, sweets, Christmas cookies, garlands, Christmas tree decorations , decorative braid, beads and ribbons. Ordinary brushes and paints, silver and gold sprays, and artificial snow will also come in handy.

Practical advice will also be useful, for example, how to make a wreath from pine or spruce branches. Usually, the frame is first made from wire or other rigid material. Then the coniferous branches are cut to the required length and the weaving of the wreath begins. The branches are laid in a clockwise direction, with the bare part of the previous branch being covered by the lush part of the next one. The second layer is woven in the opposite direction, which will help give the product volume. The branches are fastened together with wire, and it is better to take green wire, which will be invisible against the background of pine needles. Thin garden or craft wire will also work. The number of layers is taken such that DIY Christmas wreath done, it will be pleasing to the eye. Then the wreath is braided with a satin ribbon and decorated with the materials you choose. Typically, such a wreath is hung on the entrance door or on the wall, and also placed on a coffee table or shelf. But the future location of the wreath needs to be thought out in advance, because it can turn out to be quite heavy, which will not be held on by adhesive tape or pushpin, and you don’t always want to spoil the wall with a thick nail. Therefore, even before you start working with the wreath, you need to decide on its placement. If it is possible to mount it vertically on a strong mount, then you can make a heavy version of the wreath, and if the mount is quite flimsy, then it is better to choose a lighter form, which will make the decoration no worse. And if you still want to make a weighty thing, but the mounting didn’t work out, then you can place the wreath on a horizontal surface - a table, shelf, stand. But here you can let your imagination run wild and load the wreath with any, even the heaviest, toys. It will look so beautiful, quite heavy, but very symbolic New Year's wreath of pine cones, decorated with gold spray, artificial snow, nuts and apples. Candles are traditionally inserted into such a wreath, laid on the table. To fasten them well, you can heat the wire and stick it perpendicularly into the base of the candle, then fasten the wire to the main frame and decorate the lower part by a third with pine branches.

When the last piece of jewelry is on, twist the ends of the hanger.

Now wrap the hook with red ribbon.

All you have to do is make a bow from the ribbon and tie it to the wreath.

Although not only the base is made from almost any suitable material. The wreath itself and its decoration can also be made as a completely unexpected fruit of your own imagination. This way you can create a wreath from buttons of different diameters and styles, attached to a cardboard base and suspended using a strap with a round buckle. You can also dispossess your husband and make a creative wreath of ties wrapped around a plastic headband so that the tabs look beautifully outward into the decoration like flower petals. An absolutely unexpected option is a newspaper wreath: strips of paper are collected in the form of a three-dimensional flower and strung on a wire frame. You can decorate a wreath of spruce paws with small Christmas balls and memorable family photographs. Since there isn’t much space expected, you’ll have to limit yourself to five or six small photos.

This will depend on the weight of the decoration and the material from which the door is made, since you definitely cannot hammer nails into an armored sheet. But such a wreath can be made from red ribbons and burlap.

Hanging wreaths are usually made of lightweight material. Therefore, you can cover a tire from a children’s bicycle with a beautiful striped fabric, decorate it with beads and small cards. It would be nice to choose postcards in an old style. And a wreath made from this material will definitely become your favorite: take a handful of small balls and decorate a circle of the same wire with them. You will get a soft and fluffy multi-colored caterpillar curled into a ring. Fast and sweet. Everyone will probably love the idea of making a wreath from dried citrus rings attached to a paper ring. The wreath can be decorated with a spruce branch and a bunch of bright red Christmas balls with the same ribbon. Fragrant, beautiful and fun! A wreath made of wicker, on which snowflakes of all shades of blue are glued, looks fragile and elegant. It looks like they just fell from the sky onto a grape branch. Very gentle Christmas wreath It will be made from azure ribbons, gathered into ruffles and decorated with small snow-white balls that look like snowballs. You can assemble such a wreath from individual modules using the origami technique. To do this, modules of the same size in an amount of approximately 60 pieces are folded from green colored paper of several shades. On a cardboard sheet with a circle drawn in the upper part in the shape of a wreath, assembled triangles are placed: from darker to lighter colors, which will create the illusion of volume. In this case, the acute corner of the module is hidden under the previous figures, as in real branches. Then a pink cardboard candle with a yellow paper flame is “placed” in the center of the wreath. Paper snowflakes cling to streamer ribbons, as if hanging from a wreath. You can take a cardboard sheet in a wooden frame or make a edging from the same bright cardboard. Just like that - unexpected and sweet. Happy holidays to you!

Master class with step-by-step photos on making a New Year's wreath

Gaponova Natalya Mikhailovna, technology teacher at MKOU "Secondary School No. 29" in the city of Revda, Sverdlovsk region

Purpose: The product can be used as a gift for New Year's celebrations, as well as as decoration for the interior of an apartment, classroom, or any room.
The purpose of the teacher’s activity: Develop creative thinking, perception, accuracy. Follow safe work rules.

So, let's start creating!

Christmas wreaths are an interesting and versatile decorative element. It can be used to decorate almost any room and object, since the wreath can be either hung or simply placed on a flat surface.
We owe the appearance of the Advent wreath to the Lutheran theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern. As the story goes, he mentored several orphans in the early 19th century. The theological expert in every possible way expanded the children’s knowledge in the field of theology, and to make religious dogmas easier for them to perceive, he came up with various “visual aids.” To count the days of fasting before Christmas, he invented a wreath, or rather, it was an ordinary wheel on which candles were placed (a kind of prototype of the future Advent wreath), which served as calendar days - small candles were lit on weekdays, and large ones on weekends.

So, once upon a time the Advent wreath replaced the calendar, and after a significant amount of time, it turned into a symbolic and beautiful attribute of the New Year holidays.

The Christmas wreath began to be decorated in all sorts of ways - with fir branches, New Year's toys, ribbons, etc. And also, he changed the location - now not only tables are decorated with wreaths, but they are also hung on doors and windows. Thus, while maintaining the status of a symbol of the winter holidays, the Christmas wreath has completely lost its original purpose and meaning.

There are no restrictions in creating Christmas wreaths, and wreaths made using different techniques and from completely different materials can easily coexist within the same apartment.

To make our New Year's wreath we will need:

1. Thick cardboard for making a circle.

2. Old unnecessary magazines, newspapers to create the volume of the wreath.

3. Artificial spruce branches, New Year's balls of different diameters, satin ribbons, New Year's beads, fir cones, a glue gun and glue sticks for it, masking tape, green corrugated paper and various New Year's elements.

Stages of work:

1. We prepare cones. We select by size (this depends on the radius of the wreath), if the radius is large (25-30 cm), then the cones are larger, if the radius is small (18-23 cm), then the cones are smaller. We paint the cones with acrylic paint (spray can).

2. Decide on the radius of the wreath. Cut out a circle from thick cardboard, as shown in the photo above. We fold an accordion out of old magazines or newspapers and glue it tightly to the circle.

3. In this way we fill the entire circle.

4. Wrap this blank tightly with masking tape.

5. Then we wrap the workpiece with green corrugated paper.

6. Strengthen the hanger. This could be some kind of decorative loop or satin ribbon. In my case it was a satin ribbon.

7. We begin to fill the circle with spruce branches. We glue the twig so that part of the twig looks to the side, and the other part is tightly glued to the circle. Glue with a glue gun.

8. Gradually fill the outer and inner circle of the wreath.

9. Fill the circle with spruce branches so that there is room in the center for decorative elements.

10. We begin to decorate the wreath. Glue cones and New Year's balls of different diameters.

11. It is important not to overload the wreath with various elements, but this is a matter of taste...

12. I made wreaths as gifts for all my family and friends, this is what I came up with!

13. If the wreath is not made of spruce branches, then the color of the corrugated paper may not be green, but the color of your wreath, as in my case the paper was pink.

It’s unlikely that anyone will remember now what a Christmas wreath made of spruce branches hung on the front door means, especially since in Russia the traditions and attributes of Christmas were replaced by New Year’s with Soviet overtones almost 100 years ago.

DIY Christmas wreaths

Initially, the Advent wreath was nothing more than a calendar! And on the eve of Christmas, Hamburg theologian Johann Hinrich Wicher came up with the idea of lighting a small red candle on a spruce wreath every morning, symbolizing the weekday, and a large white one, meaning Sunday. The fact is that his young children constantly asked their father when Christmas would come. That is why he decided to put such an unusual calendar on the table, which later became one of the symbols of the holiday, moving to the front door to greet guests.

But despite the fact that this decoration is currently considered Western, Russian needlewomen are gradually mastering its production, not only using conventional techniques and from familiar materials, but also from everything their heart desires.

Christmas wreath made of branches

An Advent wreath made from conifer branches is a traditional version of this holiday decoration.

If you have any doubts about which branches are best and most correct to make a Christmas wreath from, then there really are no strict instructions here, simply because the tradition of making a wreath has undergone significant changes several times during its existence.

From cardboard we cut out a ring of the size that our future wreath will be. Next you need to make the frame three-dimensional, for this you will need thick paper. Squeezing and twisting the paper, we tie it with twine or wire to a cardboard ring. The structure should turn out to be quite dense and even, so you should additionally run a rope along its entire diameter, tightening and compacting the paper.

  • Then attach the branches to the frame.

The spruce branch must be disassembled into shorter ones and then each of them must be attached with wire, rope or glue of your choice to the frame. The branches should be attached in the same direction, and the white spaces should be immediately filled in to make the structure look more natural and beautiful.

  • Finally, you need to decorate the wreath.

To decorate a Christmas wreath you can choose from:

  • cones;
  • New Year's balls;
  • walnut shells;
  • dried rowan berries;
  • satin ribbons, etc.

You can decorate the wreath with anything you like. The main thing is to decide on the color scheme in advance (usually spruce branches are decorated in red colors), and not to overdo it, leaving the opportunity to admire the pine needles that you so diligently attached to the frame. Also, do not forget that all parts must be glued literally tightly for safety reasons, especially if there are small children in the house.

The option of making a Christmas wreath on a cardboard ring is not the only one possible. Perhaps for some it will seem more acceptable and simpler to make a wreath on a wire frame.

For such a wreath you will need:

  • wire, for example aluminum;
  • branches of a coniferous plant;
  • rope or thin wire;
  • glue gun;
  • elements for decoration.

Procedure for making a wire-based wreath:

  • We twist the wire into a ring of the required diameter. Depending on the softness of the wire, we wrap it one or several times to make the structure rigid.
  • We begin to attach the spruce branches with thin wire or rope to a frame made of thick wire. The branches are attached in one direction, for example, clockwise, and overlapping. The more branches there are, the richer and more beautiful the wreath itself will be.
  • We decorate the resulting wreath with any decorations of your choice, not forgetting to attach them with a glue gun for reliability.

Only cardboard or only wire frames may not be very strong or too flexible, so you can use an option that combines the advantages of each of them to make a frame for a Christmas wreath.

A durable base for a DIY Christmas wreath (video)

Christmas wreaths made from scrap materials

Losing its original meaning over time, the Christmas wreath acquires more and more new designs, which sometimes seem to no longer have anything in common with either New Year or Christmas.

Only the shape of the circle remains unchanged, without which the wreath would cease to be one.

In addition to the calendar symbol of the expectation of the birth of Christ, the wreath acquired new meanings that stemmed from its round shape. A wreath lying on a table with four candles was associated with the globe and the designated cardinal directions. In addition, the circle is a symbol of the wheel or eternal life, which will be given by the Resurrection of Christ.

One way or another, there are many options for making this Christmas decoration, each of which is easy to repeat yourself and then decorate your home for the holiday.

From tinsel

A Christmas wreath made of tinsel most closely resembles a wreath made of spruce branches, and therefore is in second place in preference for making this festive idea.

To make such a wreath, you will need to make a frame according to one of the options described above, namely based on a cardboard or wire ring. Whatever frame you choose, it will need to be reinforced with newspapers so that the wreath is voluminous and creates the illusion of a magnificent decoration.

Then you need to literally wrap the base with tinsel, avoiding any gaps, and in order for the rain to stick well, secure its ends to the wreath frame with liquid nails (a glue gun). After the base is decorated with tinsel, you can attach any decorations you like. Usually they use red satin ribbons and balls on a green background.

From the cones

To make a wreath of pine cones you will need:

  • cardboard and newsprint for the frame;
  • cones of any size;
  • glue gun;
  • cans of spray paint if desired.

To make a Christmas wreath from pine cones at home, you need to cut out a ring from cardboard, the diameter of which corresponds to the future wreath. By twisting, attach the newspaper sheets to the cardboard ring, creating volume. And then you need to glue the cones to the resulting base one by one so that there are no gaps left. Small round cones should be attached close to each other, oblong cones should be glued overlapping, just like spruce branches. If desired, the finished wreath or each cone individually can be spray painted with gold, white or silver paint before gluing. Of course, a Christmas wreath based on pine cones can also be made with other elements, for example, ribbons or dried rowan berries.

From candy

A Christmas wreath made of candies is practically no different in design from a wreath made of pine cones. The main task in making it is to stock up on a sufficient number of your favorite candies and glue them to the frame so that they are easy to unwrap and eat. That is why in this case, candies in foil and those with a candy wrapper tied on top of the pyramid candy are best suited.

From paper

A paper Christmas wreath can be made in several ways:

  • String mugs, for example, from corrugated, on a wire frame. The more details are strung and the lighter and more delicate the paper from which they are made, the more airy and delicate the wreath looks.
  • Glue the paper elements onto the frame, like you did before with pine cones or candies. This wreath is notable for the fact that paper figures can depict anything, forming together, for example, a biblical story.
  • Cover the purchased foam frame with one layer of, say, newspaper and attach several paper flowers or other details. This wreath looks very conceptual and will perfectly complement the designer interior of a modern young man’s city apartment.

From Christmas balls

Making a Christmas wreath from Christmas balls is perhaps the easiest way. For this you will need:

  • wire and a tool for bending it (for example, pliers);
  • glue gun;
  • a large number of Christmas balls of different sizes.

How to make a balloon wreath:

  • For safety reasons and for the strength of the structure, it is worth gluing the Christmas tree balls at the junction with the metal pendant. This way the ball will be guaranteed to be attached to the wire and will not fall or break at the most inopportune moment.
  • Then you need to round the wire, but do not rush to connect it into a ring.
  • We begin to string the balls on the wire, like beads on a thread, with the only difference that there should be a lot of balls and they should all “look” in different directions, making the wreath “lush.” When all the balls are strung, we make a coupling from the ends of the wire, similar to a loop in a chain. You can cover it with a satin ribbon bow. The wreath is ready!

Rustic style

If you are planning to hang a Christmas wreath in a country style interior, then you can use this option.

For this design, you can use natural materials: burlap, cones, jute ropes.

The base of such a wreath can be made from a cardboard circle or from wire twisted to a certain diameter.

If you are working with cardboard, then simply glue small pieces of burlap onto it, folded as in the photo. You can also make the decor a solid canvas by making drapery from burlap and gluing it in the right places.

If your wreath is made of wire, then you can use padding polyester (or ordinary newspapers) to wrap and add volume, on top of which you can twist strips of burlap or other natural material in a spiral.

The decor of this country wreath is made of pine cones painted with white acrylic paint, jute bows and figurines of Christmas trees and deer cut out of colored cardboard.

This Christmas wreath will be a great addition to a room decorated in a rustic style.

Eco-style Christmas wreath

Ecological interior design for the New Year holidays will be emphasized by a wreath made of wicker.

This decoration can be made in just a few minutes. We will need:

  • pre-harvested vine;
  • Christmas tree branches;
  • cones;
  • acorns;
  • berries, small apples;
  • ribbons made of natural fabric.

Twist several vine rods into a circle shape. You can strengthen the structure by wrapping the rods with strong thread or an additional thin branch of vine.

Then use a glue gun to attach the decorative elements. These can be ordinary pine or spruce cones, sprigs of pine needles, acorns, rose hips, etc.

Of course, you need to take care of creating such a wreath in advance, in the fall, by preparing everything you need.

Beautiful bows made from natural materials will perfectly complement the composition.

Using the example of several master classes, it is easy to see that making a Christmas wreath yourself at home is not so difficult. In order to enjoy your wreath for many years, you need to:

  • Pay great attention to the base of the wreath. A durable frame that does not lose shape when dropped or pressed is half the success.
  • Stock up on enough materials for decoration. Whatever you choose - twigs, pine cones or candies - it is better if there are a lot of them than not enough. It is important to stick with the concept to the end, without leaving any voids on the wreath.
  • Do not make a landfill out of the wreath. If you are not confident in your ability to beautifully combine a large number of details, it is better to use only three elements as a basis, for example, twigs, ribbons and balls or twigs, pine cones and beads.

By following these tips and using master classes, you will certainly be able to please yourself and your loved ones with beautiful and high-quality furniture that will decorate your door not only this year.

The history of Christmas wreaths

The tradition of decorating a house for Christmas and New Year with coniferous wreaths came to us from Europe. A Christian master makes a wreath of pine cones for the New Year from fir branches, complemented by 4 candles arranged crosswise. As you know, Christmas is preceded by Advent - a 24-day fast, and on each Sunday of this fast it was customary to light one candle on a wreath.

Several centuries ago, there lived in Europe a Lutheran theologian, Johann Wichern. To help the families of those in need, he took their children into his care. When the Nativity fast came, the impatient children constantly asked their mentor, when will the long-awaited Christmas come? Then he came up with the idea of making a floral wreath by inserting 24 candles into it. He used a wheel as a frame and inserted 20 small red and large white candles into the decoration. Every day he lit one red candle, and on Sunday - a white one. Then, as usual, the wreath was modernized (4 candles remained) and acquired a symbolic meaning among believers - pine branches began to symbolize the Earth, teeming with life, and 4 candles personified the universe.

Which cones to choose for a New Year's wreath?

Looking at the photo of New Year's wreaths made of cones, you can understand that there can be a variety of cones: spruce and pine, cedar and larch - all of them are so beautiful, as if created by nature for artistic use. With this environmentally friendly natural material, you just need to apply a little creativity to create unique decorations for the winter holiday. Moreover, you don’t need to buy this chic craft material, but combine business with pleasure - collecting pine cones in a park or forest with a wonderful walk.

If there are cones in the forest, then there are a lot of them, so when collecting them you need to choose the most beautiful ones or those with an unusual shape, which can also be useful. In addition to cones, you will also need to collect coniferous branches.

One thing to keep in mind is that spruce needles will shed faster than longer pine needles, which will last longer.

If you find only closed cones, don’t be upset. Place them on a warm radiator overnight, and by morning they will open like flowers on a summer morning.

What should you do with the pine cones?

The instructions on how to make a New Year's wreath from cones indicate that the collected material requires simple preparation - all the cones need to be washed in water, removing dirt particles from them, and then dried thoroughly.

Cones prepared in this way can be used in their natural form - with natural colors, or they can be painted, especially since they are easy to paint.

The cone can be tied by a thread and completely immersed in paint of the desired color, or you can paint the cone manually with a brush.

You can use spray paints.

If you paint them before making a New Year's wreath from pine cones, you will get this beauty:

Lightening buds

To lighten a bump, you need:

  • Place it in a container of household bleach for 5 hours.
  • Afterwards, rinse it in plenty of water and dry it completely (you can put them in the oven at a low temperature to speed up the process).

Covering the pine cones with glitter

Gold-plated, silver-plated or glitter-covered cones look gorgeous. To do this you will need a brush and PVA glue.

  • Apply glue with a brush to the “petals” of the cone and immediately sprinkle with glitter.
  • You can sprinkle only the tips of the cones, or you can sprinkle the entire surface.
  • Wait until the glue dries a little, and only then peel off the unadhered glitter onto the paper to reuse it.

Cone aroma

For those who feel that a New Year's wreath made of pine cones does not emit a bright enough aroma, you can treat them with cinnamon, sandalwood, or, in general, any flavoring that suits your taste.

Sometimes the pine cone is difficult to attach or glue to the base. Then at the bottom of the cone you can use pliers or another handy tool to remove several scales to create a flat base with which it will be much easier to fix it.

New Year's wreath from a hanger

This is a very simple option for making a New Year's wreath. It will require a clothes hanger made of bendable wire.

  1. Leaving the hanger hook alone, the hanger should be bent into a ring shape.
  2. You will have to untwist the wire at one end in order to string the cones onto it.
  3. The cones can be decorated by painting them in a bright color, such as gold.
  4. Glue small plastic rings to the cones and use them to string them onto the base wire, evenly distributing them along the entire perimeter of the wreath.
  5. Having filled the entire perimeter with cones, the wire must be twisted again.
  6. Decorate the top of the wreath with a beautiful accessory that covers the wire hook, for example, a fluffy red bow.
  7. Using the remaining hook, the wreath can be hung on a door or wall.

New Year's wreath of pine cones with tinsel

You can often see that pine cones are combined with Christmas tree balls and tinsel. These New Year's supplies are not in short supply, but look very elegant and bright.

Materials and tools

  • Pine cones collected from the nearby forest.
  • Christmas balls.
  • Tinsel.
  • Jewelry with sparkles.
  • Thick cardboard (like shoe boxes).
  • Stapler.
  • PVA glue.
  • Stationery knife.
  • Thermal gun.

Manufacturing

  1. Place the flattened cardboard on the table.
  2. If you don’t have a compass at home, then take 2 pot lids of different sizes and trace them with a pencil, or 2 plates of different sizes.

  1. Then, using a utility knife or scissors, cut out a cardboard ring along the outlined contours.

  1. Attach a piece of lush tinsel of your preferred color to it with a stapler.
  2. Then you need to attach balls and cones to the workpiece - they are attached with a heat gun closer to the inside of the ring. Although you can use any balls, it is more convenient to work with plastic ones.

  1. The wreath can also be decorated with figurines of Father Frost, Snow Maiden, and small plastic animal figurines.
  2. To make the wreath even more festive and bright, the surface of the balls can be treated with glue and sprinkled with glitter manually or using a spray bottle.
  3. At the end, the wreath can be entwined with a beautiful satin ribbon, after which the New Year's decoration can only be placed in its intended place.

Or another version of the master class for a New Year's wreath made of pine cones:

Christmas wreath with fir cones

Fir cones are no less beautiful than pine cones; you can also come up with many original compositions from them, in which pine or spruce branches will look harmonious with them.

Materials and tools

  • Fir cones (you can combine them with pine cones).
  • Spruce branches.
  • Decor in the form of beads, ribbons, etc.
  • Scissors.
  • Glue gun.
  • Stapler.
  • Brown spray paint.
  • Scotch.
  • Newspaper.

Manufacturing

  1. You can spend money and buy a ready-made base, but you can also save money by making it yourself, for which you twist the newspaper into a long tube, bend it into a ring, and fasten the edges with a stapler.
  2. Additionally, wrap the resulting blank with strips cut from the same newspaper, and then secure the ring shape with tape.
  3. The tape needs to be hidden by treating it with spray paint.
  4. Glue the cones tightly around the entire perimeter of the ring.
  5. Decorate the resulting wreath to your taste; you can cover it with varnish or paint, although natural shades will look chic.

New Year's wreath based on newspapers

In this version, newspaper or magazine paper is used to make the base of the wreath.

  1. Several sheets of paper need to be twisted, closed in a ring and wrapped with tape.

Try to keep the thickness of this ring the same in different places.

  1. Using a glue gun, cover the entire ring with a paper towel.

  1. Cut a 1.5-meter strip of 15 cm wide from organza. Wrap the base with this ribbon and secure its ends with a glue gun.
  2. After this, wrap the frame with green rain imitating spruce branches.

  1. Attach larger specimens of cones with a glue gun in the center of the base, and smaller ones are suitable for the edges.

You should not try to glue the cones tightly, since other decorations can be placed in the gaps between them: Christmas tree decorations, beads, cinnamon sticks, ribbons, and complete the decoration with a large beautiful bow.
