The World Wrestling Championships were noticeably different from last year's competition in Paris.

Previously, Budapest has twice hosted the Unified World Wrestling Championship, which has been taking place since 2005. The competitions were held in the capital of Hungary in 2005 and 2013.

The 2018 World Wrestling Championship is a new competition among amateur wrestlers, which will be held from October 20 to 28, 2018 in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Dozens of Greco-Roman and freestyle martial artists will come to the main city of Hungary. Which of the championship participants will be successful, and will there be Russian athletes among the future triumphs?

Where and when will the 2018 World Wrestling Championships take place?

The new edition of the competition will take place in autumn 2018. The best wrestlers on the planet will compete for trophies from October 20 to 28, 2018.

The host city of the World Cup Wrestling Championship 2018 will be Budapest. The Hungarian capital was chosen as the center of the World Cup at one of the meetings of the United World Wrestling (UWW) committee in October 2016. The main city of Hungary has already received this honor in 2005, 2013 and 2016.

The participants will most likely compete within the walls of the SYMA Sports & Conference Center. This is a multifunctional building that can be used equally well as an exhibition center and a sports arena. In 2016, SYMA Sports & Conference Center already hosted competitions of the best wrestlers on the planet.

Competition program

The competition will be held in two types of martial arts: Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. The first type will be represented by men, and the second by men and women.

Greco-Roman wrestling fighters at the 2018 World Championships will compete for medals in the following categories (kg):

  • up to 59;
  • up to 66;
  • up to 71;
  • up to 75;
  • up to 80;
  • up to 85;
  • up to 98;
  • up to 130.

The 2018 World Cup Wrestling Championship in freestyle wrestling will be competed for by men and women. Here is what the list of all weight categories looks like (men/women, kg):

  • up to 57/48;
  • up to 61/53;
  • up to 65/55;
  • up to 70/58;
  • up to 74/60;
  • up to 86/63;
  • up to 97/69;
  • up to 125/75.

2018 World Wrestling Championships results

The awards will be contested by dozens of respected athletes from dozens of countries. The following states will have the strongest representation:

  • Russia;
  • Japan;
  • Mongolia;
  • Iran;
  • Türkiye;
  • Germany;
  • Armenia;
  • Azerbaijan;
  • Cuba.

It is especially worth highlighting Russia, Japan and the USA, which invariably fall into the TOP 3 of the overall medal standings in almost every edition of the World Cup.

It's nice to see Russia among the leaders. Our athletes are some of the best on the planet. The national school was glorified by such names as Alexander Karelin, Buvaysar Saitiev and Alexander Medved. Russian and Soviet athletes won a total of 649 medals, 345 of which were gold! Any other country participating in the World Cup cannot boast of anything similar. Japanese athletes occupying second place in the medal standings have three times fewer awards!

The collapse of the Soviet Union weakened the domestic school. But this does not prevent Russian masters from achieving high results. Our athletes have topped the overall medal standings more than once.

Unfortunately, the last World Cup ended in a fiasco for Russia. Following the results of the World Championships in France, domestic wrestlers won 5 silver and bronze awards. But there was no place for gold medals in the national team’s treasury... What caused this sad anti-record: a drop in the level of Russian athletes, or just an accident?! The answer to this question will be given in the upcoming edition of the World Championship!

On October 23, the freestyle wrestlers' tournament as part of the World Championships in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling ended in Budapest. And there is a lot of good news - both for our country and for everyone who is interested in this sport.

Championship special correspondent Evgeniy Slyusarenko, summing up the results, will do something unusual for him - he will praise the Americans. Yes, yes, our direct competitors.

Of course, one cannot help but say good things about our people. The point is not even that we became the first - both in the points standings and in a more understandable way, in medals. This is exactly what the Russian freestyle wrestling team has done more than once in the past.

Russia beats the USA in the medal standings of the World Men's Freestyle Wrestling Championship

It's a matter of perspective. Just a year ago, it seemed that the team’s reserves were exhausted - at the World Championships in Paris 2017, our team not only did not take a single gold, but sooner or later this could happen. The problem was that behind that team there was no visible support group, those who did not arrive, but were just about ready to join. And the explanations of head coach Dzambolat Tedeev did not look convincing at all.

Entrance to the failure. Five bad news we learned about at the World Wrestling Championships

Russian wrestlers were unable to win a single victory at the World Championships. The world will never be the same.

A year later, the Russian team has four world champions. Let's savor their names once again: Zaur Uguev (up to 57 kg), Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov (up to 70 kg), Zaurbek Sidakov (up to 75 kg) and Abdulrashid Sadulaev (up to 97 kg). And most importantly, three of these four (Uguev, Sidakov and Sadulayev) represent Olympic weight categories. That is, they have the most direct and immediate chances at the Games in Tokyo in two years. Three clear contenders in six Olympic weights is decent. By today's standards, even a lot.

Obviously, the coaching staff drew the most fundamental conclusions from last year’s failure. First of all, it is clear that they began to work with the team more individually, with the involvement of personal and senior coaches. This very targeted work definitely produced at least two new world champions (Uguev and Sidakov) - those whose names were difficult to imagine at such a level a year ago.

“Parents were so scared by Beslan that they stopped letting them go to training”

And before the World Cup, the national team coach kicked him - the future winner - out of the hall. Why?

And now great news for all freestyle wrestling. The Americans are back! No, of course, they didn’t disappear anywhere and took their one or two victories consistently. But they haven’t set their sights on winning the overall championship with such strength and confidence since the 1996 home Olympics - more than 20 years ago.

The Americans themselves felt that they were ready for big things - watch this pre-launch video introducing the team. “We came to win one of the brightest and most memorable titles in the history of the World Cup” - no more and no less.

For world wrestling, the presence of the US team is, I repeat, excellent news. This is fresh blood, this is the return of the eternal confrontation with Russia, this is, after all, professional promotion and money. And wrestling really needs promotion and money - MMA is advancing and pressing. And the US team has someone to promote.

Sadulayev's final performance, of course, eclipsed everything in Budapest, but on the first medal day, David Taylor III, nicknamed The MagicMan, reigned on the mat in the 86 kg weight class. At the start, he managed to defeat the 2016 Olympic champion Iranian Hasan Yazdani, losing 2:6 after the first period. And in the next three minutes he scored nine points – 11:6. In the semi-finals against our Dauren Kurugliev, he was first knocked down with a heel strike to the head (unintentionally, of course), then lost the first period with a score of 1:5, and then carried out three actions for six points. And the final - well, the Turk Erdin was simply deposed (12:2).

Or take Kyle Dake in the weight up to 79 kg, who completed his fights without a single missed move and with a score of 37:0 in the sum of all fights. Well, it's power.

Of course, one can argue that the same Dake or Michael Cox (up to 92 kg) won in non-Olympic weights and, when trying to get into the team in Tokyo 2020, will have to knock out other leaders of the US team, but we still have to live to see that. In the meantime, the Americans made a strong impression. And if Abdulrashid Sadulayev had lost to Kyle Snyder in the final match of the tournament, then the US team would have been in first place, not Russia. Everything was hanging by a thread.

Well, exactly until the moment when Tank caught Snyderman making a mistake. It's worth seeing again to be sure: we saw one of the best world championships in freestyle wrestling in many years.

The World Freestyle Wrestling Championships are taking place in Budapest from October 20 to 28. 30 sets of medals will be awarded at the championship. The opening ceremony of the championship took place on October 20. Russia is represented at the championship by a team of professional wrestlers, who have currently won 4 gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

In the table, the team from Russia ranks first with 4 golds. American athletes are hot on the heels of the Russian team. And third place is taken by wrestlers from Japan. In the women's freestyle wrestling competition, Japanese athletes are the favorites.

The first medal at the 2018 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships was won on the opening day

Zaurbek Sidakov brought the first gold medal at the championship to the Russian team. Few people, except the coaches of Russian athletes, predicted victory for him. Moreover, he was facing a fight with the famous wrestler from the United States, Jordan Burrows, whom many saw as the favorite of the championship. Zaurbek defeated the American in the last minutes, and in the next match the same fate befell the Italian wrestler Franco Chamiso.

Thus, a simple guy from an Ossetian village, who traveled 10 km to get to training, proved that the Russian freestyle wrestling school is rightfully considered one of the strongest in the world.

Thanks to many hours of training and enormous willpower, the Russian athlete won a gold medal in such a prestigious weight category. Zaurbek Sidakov competed in the weight category up to 74 kg. This weight category is considered special among wrestlers. And in this category, the Russian athlete Zaurbek Sidakov became the world champion in 2018.

The 2018 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships showed the fortitude of Russian athletes

An athlete from the Russian team, Zaur Uguev, who competed in the weight category up to 57 kg, showed enormous willpower and unshakable spirit.

In the duel with the Japanese wrestler, Zaur was clearly losing on points at the beginning of the fight. The leg injury took its toll. The opponent, sensing Uguev’s weak point, constantly carried out techniques specifically on the Russian athlete’s sore leg. The problem became so serious that a medical team had to be called.

But the Russian athlete managed to turn the tide of the fight. After being examined by doctors, Zaur Uguev not only continued to fight, but also brought the Russian team a gold medal. This was proof of the athlete’s great desire for victory and enormous willpower.

Thanks to Zaur's victory, the Russian team took first place in the standings of the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Budapest.

The best athletes in the world showed their skills at the 2018 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships

The World Freestyle Wrestling Championship, which takes place in Budapest, has brought together the best masters of this sport under its banners. Athletes from many countries around the world performed and showed good results in different weight categories.

The Russian team took its rightful place among world-class wrestlers. The medals they won testify to this. Gold was also won by Russian athletes Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov, who competed in the weight category up to 70 kg, and heavyweight wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulayev, who competed in the weight category up to 97 kg. Also, wrestlers from Russia won 2 silver and one bronze medals.

The absolute favorites among women at the championship are athletes from the land of the rising sun. Athletes from Japan have 2 gold medals. They are so far the only gold winners at the 2018 championship.

Athletes from Belarus and Turkey won silver at the World Championships. The World Freestyle Wrestling Championship gave fans many unforgettable moments, and until the end of the competition it promises to be interesting and keep the audience in suspense.

The Russian freestyle wrestling team won seven medals at the World Championships in Budapest: four gold, a silver and two bronze. Abdulrashid Sadulayev became a three-time world champion, Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov became a two-time world champion, and the first champion title was won by Zaurbek Sidakov and Zaur Uguev.

Quartet of Champions

“Each gold medal at the World Championships is special,” noted Dzambolat Tedeev. “Zaurbek Sidakov worked his ass off at the training camp, worked so hard, but at the World Championships he still competed beyond his capabilities: he defeated Burrows, won against Chamizo. And in the final he I qualified with a reserve, I was ready to improve, but this is the final of the World Championship, there was too much at stake. Do you remember how Zaurbek Sidakov, when he didn’t make it to the European Championship, kissed the jersey with my image? That’s when I realized: the guy is capable, he will go to the World Championship and will win. It's all thanks to that kiss (laughs)."

“Zaur Uguev has long been the best wrestler in the world, we just needed to open him up a little, work on his psychology,” continued Dzambolat Tedeev. “Today on the mat you saw Zaur’s capabilities, but he will continue to open up in the future, he will become even stronger.” Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov pulled out victory at the very end, when there were less than two seconds left on the scoreboard - this speaks of both his experience and his excellent functional readiness. We must pay tribute - Adam Batyrov fought as well as ever, but Gazimagomedov was able to beat him. Well, Abdulrashid Sadulaev is tank. Your colleagues won’t let you lie: even before the World Championships, I didn’t hesitate to say that Sadulaev would win against Snyder, he’s just ready for the World Championships. A year ago he wasn’t ready, then he had to be forced to come to the gym. Today he trained with "With great desire, his trainer kicked him out of the gym. With his wrestling, he proved how much higher his class is, and our mountains know no shame (smiles)"

Rashidov's silver and red card

“We won four golds, but Gadzhimurad Rashidov should have been the champion, from whom the judges took away the victory,” noted Dzambolat Tedeev. “Yes, he made a grave mistake, he flew away by five points at the end of the period, but the entire second period he carried the Cuban on hands. Sometimes it’s enough to run away for a second to get a point with a warning, today his opponent ran away the entire period, stepped behind the mat, and the “challenge” that I clicked on didn’t work. Yes, I was sent off, but let me always have a red card , if only the guys performed like that, and the Russian team blew everyone out of their way."

Bronze Budapest for Akhmedov - Chakaev and Gajdimagomedov

“There are also questions for the judging regarding Chakaev’s fight with the Japanese - it ended with a score of 15:10. But Akhmed Chakaev beat both world champion Stieber and Olympic champion Khinchegashvili - wrestlers to whom he had previously lost. He will draw the right conclusions and win for the third time at the World Championship. Moreover, today he is fighting in the Olympic category, which means he has taken a step forward compared to the silver of the European Championship and bronze of the World Championship. In the bout of Akhmed Gadzhimagomedov, the first throw came after the referee's whistle - and during the “challenge” he did not admitted that he blew the whistle. And when the score became too big, Gadzhimagomedov was confused and could not turn the fight in his favor. We have two bronzes, which we will soon, at the next championships, melt down into gold."

Three steps forward by Anzor Khizriev

“Khizriev has taken three steps forward in a year, and at the moment we don’t have a better heavyweight in our country than him. Next year he will definitely be on the podium. He fought well, he has techniques - but today he was a little lacking. As for Dauren Kuruglieva is a different story. The whole team was ready, which means Dauren was ready too, he just didn’t have enough self-confidence. And the young guy Batyrbek Tsakulov was a little burnt out, but defeat will be good for him. If the young guys don’t get such experience, there will be no results they won’t have it, we need to know their potential and their capabilities before the main start is still a year and a half away."

Results and further developments

“Have you noticed our T-shirts? It says: Besik Kudukhov, we dedicate the victory to you. We performed well - for our worthy champion. In addition, we gave a gift to the President of the country. And now to say that I am pleased is to say nothing, because I am happy! I'm proud of how the team approached this championship and how it performed at it. We have three gold medals in the Olympic weights, and in the categories up to 65, 86 and 125 kg we will strengthen the competition within the country and achieve our goal by the Olympics. And before the Olympics it’s time to rest "We won't have much - in a little more than a month we begin the selection for the new season - the Alana tournament, which will serve as a selection for the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix. The most important year begins, which will end with the pre-Olympic World Championship."
