Highway honor 5. Working with two SIM-cards

Huawei Honor 5X is quite compact for its large screen. Its dimensions: 151.3 × 76.3 × 8.6 mm, weight - 158 grams. It is slightly shorter and wider than the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, but noticeably more compact. It is not that heavy for its diagonal, only slightly heavier than the 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016). Comparison with the "classmate" in price, Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL, on all counts is in favor of Honor 5X.

The body of the smartphone is wide, but in a large palm lies quite comfortably. True, it is inconvenient to use it with one hand even with the help of the special “One-handed control” mode. With it, the image is compressed to the size of a 4-inch screen, which looks very strange.

From the front, the smartphone looks rather faceless, while from the back it resembles Huawei Honor 7. From the same Honor 4X, it is distinguished by the absence of separate buttons on the front surface of the case, they are implemented above, on the touch panel of the display. The frames look thinner due to the technique used back in Honor 4C - a small area around the screen is painted black, and when the phone is turned off, it merges with the dark canvas of the display. In fact, the frames around the screen are rather average in width, and the ratio of the display area to the surface of the smartphone is quite high (72.2%) due to the large diagonal and the location of the buttons.

The back panel of Honor 5X can be called memorable. In gold, it looks like the back of an expensive device - textured metal looks good. Under the camera lens is a fast fingerprint scanner. The transition from the back panel to the side ends was made unusual - it is not smooth, but chopped, due to this, an additional narrow edge appears along the edges of the back. Even the control keys on the side were made textured and pleasant to the touch. But what seemed strange to us was the plastic inserts for the antennas at the top and bottom edges of the back - with their dotted texture, they look like a skin-colored patch. In addition, it is not clear why the lens was made protruding from the body.

The build quality is high - the phone is built solidly, does not creak under pressure and does not want to bend. Someone may not like that the phone case is non-separable, but such is the price for metal. During the tests, Honor 5X almost did not lose its presentation, although the back collects dirt and prints at a moderate rate.

Huawei Honor 5X is available in three colors - gold, graphite gray and metallic silver.

Screen - 4.8

The screen of Huawei Honor 5X is good for its price. Large, bright, with Full HD resolution - finding such a display for an average price tag is not an easy task. Its shortcomings - an overestimated color temperature and a simple protective glass - can be called uncritical.

As mentioned above, the phone screen received Full HD-resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels). For a diagonal of 5.5 inches, the pixel density is very high - 401 per inch, which is enough to make the image look sharp. Instead of the fashionable protective glass Gorilla Glass, a simpler one from ASG is used, installed on top of the display. It is barely noticeable to the eye and moderately collects prints, which are then relatively easy to rub off.

The viewing angles of the Honor 5X are good for an IPS panel. When the display is tilted, the colors remain themselves, only the contrast of the image suffers. The brightness range pleasantly surprised - from 6 to 532 cd / m 2, better than the more expensive Huawei Honor 7. On a sunny day, such a screen is read almost without problems, and at night it does not blind your eyes at low brightness. The display supports the auto-brightness function (with smooth adjustment by the slider), it works quickly, but sometimes it is inadequate to the lighting conditions. Image contrast is 760:1, an average result for an IPS matrix, it is only slightly higher than that of the budget ZTE Blade X5. The color gamut covers 93% of the standard, sometimes "falling out" beyond its limits. Color deviations are average by the standards of smartphones, only the color temperature turned out to be too high (about 8000 degrees), which makes the image look a bit cool. But this is not such a problem - in the screen settings it can be adjusted by lowering the temperature by more than a thousand degrees.

We also liked the presence of the glove mode and how it works. The screen becomes quite responsive, you can even run specific applications and type on the keyboard.

Camera

The Huawei Honor 5X uses mid-range cameras of 13 and 5 MP. Last year, similar cameras in Honor 4C looked great, but now they no longer evoke such strong emotions. But in principle, they will be enough to replace an inexpensive camera or take a picture for Instagram.

The main camera received a wide-angle lens with a focal length of 28 mm and a fairly wide f / 2.0 aperture. In our opinion, the camera can be called average for its resolution. Frame detail is relatively high, better than the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL, but also suffers a little from noise, especially when lighting conditions deteriorate. Focusing works quite quickly and, as a rule, accurately. From time to time, the camera makes mistakes with the white balance, the picture contrast is not the highest, and the colors in the background are dull. Photos look sharp, but only if you do not enlarge the picture and do not peer into the details, which are noticeably lost.

The camera is available HDR mode, but in our opinion, the effect of it is more nominal than practical. In addition to it, the “Focus” mode is curious - you can take a picture with it, and after that select the desired focus point.

The camera can shoot video up to Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) at 30 frames per second. The only bad thing is that tracking autofocus is not supported, but there is a function for tracking a specific point on the video.

The 5 MP front camera is perfect for selfie lovers. She can retouch the face, adjust the beautification effect and shoot panoramic photos. In addition, there are a number of settings like exposure, color temperature, saturation and ISO (up to 800), which is rarely found in front cameras. By the way, here these settings are not in vain, because in auto mode, skin tones are not always transmitted correctly. In terms of video, the capabilities of the front camera are limited to HD resolution (1280 × 720 pixels).

Working with text - 5.0

On the smartphone, you can choose two keyboards: the standard one from Google and Huawei's own Swype.

You are probably familiar with the first one, it can quickly switch between languages and supports continuous word input (Swype). The Huawei Swype keyboard has both a function of the same name, as well as marking up additional characters and even gesture control (for example, you can hide the keyboard from the screen with a swipe). It seems inconvenient only to switch between languages in two actions - by holding down the space bar and “swipe” up.

Internet - 5.0

The Huawei Honor 5X comes pre-installed with the proprietary Browser and Chrome. The first one turned out to be quite interesting - it allows you to save pages for offline reading, use an ad filter, block pop-up windows or turn off all pictures to save traffic. Chrome is already quite famous and is usually pre-installed on most Android devices. It's fast and can sync with your desktop browser to display your bookmarks and history.

Communications - 2.6

They decided to save money on communications in Honor 5X, except for LTE support. The rest of his set is quite common:

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n with the ability to distribute the Internet
  • Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP profile support
  • LTE Cat. 4, up to 150/50Mbps
  • A-GPS with GLONASS support
  • FM radio (only works with headphones).

Above average, it lacks dual-band or fast Wi-Fi, an NFC chip and other chips, like the infrared port that Honor 7 has. The Micro-USB connector is simple here, without OTG for connecting devices. Noteworthy is only the support for two SIM-cards of different formats - Nano and Micro.

Multimedia - 2.6

Huawei Honor 5X supports only the most common audio and video codecs and does not stand out for its high sound quality. So, he played music in FLAC, but did not cope with the AC-3 format. In terms of video, he turned out to be not at all omnivorous - problems arose both with RMVB, TS, FLV, and with some MKV videos.

A fairly simple and nicely designed audio player is preinstalled on the smartphone. From the sound settings there is a bass boost, a 3D effect and an equalizer with a set of presets and manual settings. True, they are available only when headphones are connected. If you listen to music with headphones, the sound quality is average, but through its own speaker, the smartphone sounds mediocre.

The built-in video player is also quite simple. In it, you can adjust the playback speed, the volume of the sound (although there are keys on the body for this), block the image (so that it does not curl up from an accidental touch), or start the video in a small window on top of the desktop.

Battery - 3.0

The battery life of Huawei Honor 5X is quite high for its price, but we can't call it outstanding, the same Honor 6 with similar characteristics lasted longer.

So, the phone lasted 7 hours and 30 minutes when playing HD-video at maximum brightness - a relatively long time. This is 20 minutes less than the Honor 7, but slightly longer than the Huawei Nexus 6P phablet. The battery life when playing music turned out to be already average - 51 hours, comparable to the small Samsung Galaxy A3. For an hour of running the GeekBench Battery Test, the smartphone spent 16% of the charge, an average result. During an hour of racing in Asphalt 8, the battery was discharged by 24% - again, a typical result, promising about 4 hours of work in games. In daily use, we calmly had enough phone for about a day and a half, and with active use - for a full day.

In the settings of Honor 5X, you can find several power consumption modes - "Normal", "Smart" and "Energy Saving". The second offers auto-tuning of energy consumption, and the latter turns the smartphone into a black-and-white “dialer” with SMS messages. The included 1A adapter charges the smartphone in about three hours, which is quite a long time. That is why we did not have the fast charging function, but for such money it is rather just our “Wishlist”.

Performance - 2.6

Huawei Honor 5X can be called productive enough for most phone tasks, it will not be suitable only for the heaviest games.

The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor (4 cores at up to 1.2 GHz + 4 cores at 1.5 GHz). The amount of RAM is 2 GB - it can be called already standard for a mid-range phone. In daily use, Honor 5X works quite smoothly, but not perfectly fast - sometimes when switching between modes, applications or different menus, the device thinks for a while. But it will be noticeable sooner for those who are used to top-end devices. Most games start and run without problems. Only the most severe of them cause noticeable (by eye) problems. So, NOVA 3 noticeably slows down, and Asphalt 8 “twitches” on high graphics. On medium settings it becomes playable, but still stutters from time to time. We have also checked to see if the Honor 5X overheats while playing games. In half an hour of racing, the temperature of the front panel rose to 41 degrees, and on the back to 39. The result can be called good, the case feels warm, but compared to more powerful models, this does not cause any problems.

If we consider synthetic tests, then Honor 5X shows results above average:

  • in GeekBench 3 (processor performance) - 3045 points (only half a thousand inferior to Huawei Honor 7)
  • in AnTuTu 6.0 (mixed test) - 35658 (5000 higher than Huawei Honor 4X)
  • in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited (graphics test) - up to 7963 (comparable to Lenovo Vibe Shot).

Memory - 4.0

The amount of built-in memory of Huawei Honor 5X is 16 GB, of which about 10.5 GB is available to the user – everything else is occupied by pre-installed software and the system. In practice, this is not so much, but you can expand this volume with a memory card up to 128 GB. By the way, a separate slot is used for it, that is, SIM cards do not claim to be an additional storage space. Most games and large applications can be moved from the main memory to MicroSD, but many of the pre-installed ones cannot be removed.

Peculiarities

Huawei Honor 5X can be called special - it's a metal case, a fingerprint scanner and a fairly capacious battery. But the most unusual is the combination of a low price and solid characteristics, at a level above average.

The scanner should be mentioned separately - unlocking with a finger occurs in about half a second, and the sensor recognizes a fragment of a finger at any angle. The only problem is that you will only be given 6 tries to get a small area on any of your fingers, and that's not much. Therefore, think in advance how exactly it will be more convenient for you to use it. In addition, LTE support, three separate slots for NanoSIM, MicroSIM and MicroSD cards can be called distinctive. The smartphone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop and proprietary interface EM UI 3.1. Huawei is promising to update the phone to Android 6 Marshmallow, but it's unclear when that will happen. The proprietary interface of the device has a lot of different features and capabilities, but you will have to spend some time learning them. There are really a lot of interesting features here - gesture control, shaking, even a fingerprint scanner, you can not only unlock your smartphone, but also take photos, answer an incoming call, and so on. Like Honor P8 Lite, you can launch any application on the disabled screen by drawing one of the four letters (“c”, “w”, “e” and “m”), you can configure them yourself.

Let's take such an everyday situation. It's time to change the old smartphone, but it's not clear what to choose from the new ones. It seems that you don’t want to overpay, but you also don’t want to buy a very simple device, it will quickly get bored. You come to the store, and there is a row of faceless smartphones on the shelf. The nimble seller recommends the novelty of the season, take it, he says, this device. Just brought, they are quickly sold out, the last one remained in the warehouse, and this sample is on display. And what is this outlandish little animal Honor 5X? Behind the “back” of the device is Huawei, but there is not a single hieroglyph on the body, not a single inscription from Big Brother.

Shiny and metallic

It is logical that Honor 5X has replaced Honor 4X. It was a well-cut, but completely boring smartphone in terms of materials: a modest plastic remnant, one of hundreds of its kind. It came out last year, and everything is fine with its appearance, so Huawei did not get smart with the design of the new device and made the 5X very similar to the "seven".

Honor 5X is a big smartphone. It has a 5.5-inch screen, but the display is surrounded by small bezels, so by the standards of large smartphones, it is quite adequate in size. Yes, for most actions you need to take the phone with both hands, otherwise you simply won’t be able to use it.

The case is almost completely metal, only at the ends there are small plastic inserts. Let the new Huawei look “no way” from the front, but you take it in your hand and rejoice - metal is in every way better than cheap plastic. The back is decorated with a pattern of stripes, everything shimmers in the light. Beautiful design is pleasing to the eye and amphibious when you see how much eminent brands ask for metal in decoration.

It happens that they make plastic “under the metal” in a similar style, but you can’t go wrong here, especially when you use a smartphone in the cold without gloves - the device becomes icy in seconds. But the gloves can not be removed - the settings provide a function to control the device with gloves. The accuracy of pressing suffers, but the fingers are warm.

I got a smartphone in a golden finish. The color is undoubtedly fashionable, but in this version, the black frame around the screen catches the eye. So in the dark version, the device should look more organic.

Not very stable

The phone cannot be called super-thin or especially light, but for a 5.5-inch device it does not look like an overgrown giant, against the background of the old 4X, it has generally become smaller in all respects.

The camera lens is surrounded by a thin bezel, the smartphone rests on it when we put it on the table. Will it scratch over time? Possibly, but I can't say for sure. But because of it, the phone cannot lie flat on the surface, it is worth touching it with your finger - and it starts to swing.

Big screen under the film

5.5 inches, 1080 x 1920 resolution, IPS panel without air gap. Against the background of Honor 4X, progress was made, where the dot density was lower, and here it is 401 pixels per inch, the grain cannot be seen with all desire. The screen is decent: a good anti-reflective layer, wide viewing angles, rich image. What else is needed for happiness? Even a film to protect the scratch-resistant glass was pasted here. Protected film protects.

Not satisfied with the ready-made display settings? You can change the color temperature through the smartphone settings. By default, the phone goes "blue", so the option will not be superfluous.

Old Android with bells and whistles

Want the latest Android? Buy 5X. Only not Honor, but, that's where the "marshmallow" 6.0 will be. And Honor 5X has the good old Lollipop 5.1 with the proprietary “add-on” EMUI 3.1. Despite the fact that the sixth version of Google's mobile OS has been available since October, manufacturers are in no hurry to launch new devices with fresh software on the market. In this case, just such an example.

The shell sometimes podlagivaet, small twitches can be experienced, but it's worth noting.

In order to make it more convenient to use, many functions have been added: here you can control the screen with one hand, unlock by double tapping, a smart profile with alerts works so that in the middle of the night the smartphone does not wake up the household with a loud signal when another portion of spam arrives in the box. If three touch buttons under the screen are not enough, then we add the fourth to them in the smartphone settings, it will help you go to the quick access menu.

The indicator light works, the diode blinks brightly, the indicator is clearly visible not only in the dark, but also during the day.

Average in everything

Last year, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 was in many smartphones, and Honor 5X also received this chip. Operating frequency of 1.5 GHz cores, Adreno 405 graphics, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The amount of data storage can always be increased due to the slot for microSD, if you wish, we put a drive up to 128 GB inclusive. I note that the presence of microSD does not affect the second SIM card, the slots are separate. And not like in many devices where you have to put a memory card instead of an additional SIM. There is no USB-OTG support, the smartphone refused to read data from the connected flash drive.

I quote the indicators in the tests for clarity. If you put the feeling in words, then everything is very ordinary, not bad, but there are no high achievements either. For demanding toys, the power is not enough, but if there is no desire to turn a smartphone into a gaming console, then you can forget about this item. The browser is not stupid, high-quality movies are spinning, and what else do you need when you go to work in the subway and want to pass the time by reading a book or watching another TV series.

Useful Scanner

The flagship function has also reached a simpler smartphone, I mean a fingerprint sensor. But where to look for a scanner if it is not visible from the front? And he, as in Honor 7, and smartphones of the Mate series, is located at the back.

Maybe it's unusual at first glance, but it's convenient - when you hold the phone in your hand, the index finger exactly hits the scanner area. It's easy to enter your data, Honor 5X will remember your finger in just 6 touches. Against the background, where for the same operation you need to do about 30 similar actions, this is progress. The scanner helps to unlock the smartphone, it can be used to turn off the alarm, use it as a shutter for the camera.

loud sound

The speaker is good: the interlocutor is perfectly audible, the voice quality is on top. With a multimedia speaker, too, everything is in order. It is located on the bottom end, the place is chosen wisely: it will be difficult to block the speaker with anything when the phone is on the table or in your pocket. Take a look at the design: from the outside it seems that there are two speakers here. But the second set of holes here is fake.

In the SIM card settings, we set different signals for calls and messages for each number. The function is not new, just note that it is present here.

13 megapixels for day but not night

The main camera is 13 MP (5-lens optics, f/2.0), the front camera is 5 MP (4-lens optics, f/2.4). But if you do not go into details, but look at the shooting examples, then the quality can be described with the word “normal”. Here the detail is average, the phone rarely misses the white balance. However, it is better not to shoot at night - the pictures come out too "noisy".

Several screens with options for settings:

LTE and dual SIM

We are already so accustomed to the fact that Chinese smartphones come with a pair of SIM cards that the presence of two slots in the device is taken for granted. The novelty lives up to expectations, in Honor 5X you can put two cards, one of them is micro-SIM format, and the second is nano. The smartphone stably catches Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n networks at frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz. Both SIM cards can work in LTE networks, we select this in the settings. Perhaps someone will miss NFC, I love this feature for its simplicity: I put the phone to the headphones, and the bundle is ready, there is no need to start the search mode. Among the settings, a useful function is to save traffic, you can deprive applications of access to the Internet at will.

Navigation works well, in 30 seconds of searching, Honor 5X will find 20-25 GPS and GLONASS satellites.

Two days away from the outlet

The 3,000 mAh battery does not fail: charging lasts for two days. During this time, there is about 4 hours of active screen. If you watch a video on YouTube, then in an hour at maximum display brightness it takes 15-17%, so a fully charged battery will last for 6.5-7 hours of watching online movies. In games, it takes about 18-20% per hour, a good indicator.

Energy saving settings:

Conclusion

The price of Honor 5X at the start of sales is 16-17 thousand rubles. It is not the most productive for the money, but if you do not chase power when choosing a new smartphone, then this option will appeal to balanced features. It has a neat appearance, high-quality finish, a comfortable shell and many nice little things like a glove control and a fingerprint scanner.

You could already read most of the information about the new inexpensive smartphone from Huawei in my first look at the Huawei Honor 5X, then I will often refer to this article and take some fragments from it. The main issue at that time was the official cost of the smartphone, and despite Huawei's promises to retail the device at a price of up to 17,000 rubles, to be honest, few people believed in it. However, the company kept its word, in retail and in the official Huawei online store, the smartphone costs exactly 17,000 rubles. For this money, the device is currently (end of February) one of the best offers on the Russian market in terms of cost and performance.

In short, Huawei Honor 5X is the fruit of intense competition in the local (Chinese) market between Huawei, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Meizu and some other brands. All of them are rapidly descending into the budget segment, offering more and more features and better features in new devices. Thanks to this struggle, Honor 5X at a low cost has the qualities of smartphones from the middle and even top segment at a relatively low cost. Let's take a look at the device.

Design, body materials

The smartphone is available in three colors - silver (white front panel), dark gray (gray front panel) and gold. In the photo to the article you see it. I can’t say anything special about the appearance - the device is made in the design already familiar to Huawei, not the brightest and most original, but recognizable. The eye of the camera sticks out a little relative to the entire surface of the case, such a solution is now common, I don’t know if this is good or bad.

The back of the Honor 5X is almost completely made of metal, with the exception of the upper and lower segments, they are made of plastic. The front panel is glass. From the point of view of case materials, the same idea is used here as in the Samsung Galaxy A line - to make an externally expensive device that will not be associated with budget models at first glance, but vice versa. In my opinion, it turned out well, although of course it falls short of the A-series Honor 5X (there is more plastic, there are unnecessary, in my opinion, decorative elements and solutions). Overall, this is a smartphone that feels more expensive than it actually is.

Assembly

No complaints about build quality. There are no creaks (and where can they come from), from removable elements there are only trays for microSIM cards and a memory card. The keys are securely "sitting" in their places, do not hang out (sometimes this happens in inexpensive devices).

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, this is a typical 5.5" device - relatively wide, yet quite light in its category and not too thick. In the hand lies well, especially if you are used to using large smartphones.

Compare with devices similar in diagonal to the screen:

  • Apple iPhone 6S Plus(5.5"") - 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm, 192 grams
  • LG G4(5.5"") - 148.9 x 76.1 x 9.8 mm, 155 grams
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 3- (5.5”) - 150 x 76 x 8.7 mm, 164 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 2016(5.5”) - 151.5 x 74.1 x 7.3 mm, 172 grams
  • (5.5”) - 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.2 mm, 158 grams

The convenience of using a smartphone with such dimensions is a matter of habit.

Controls

In terms of controls, this is a typical Android smartphone with a pair of hardware keys and touch-sensitive on-screen buttons. The hardware buttons are located on the right edge: on top is the volume key, below is the power button. On the left edge there are two slots for SIM cards, one for nanoSIM, the second for microSIM. Separately, there is a place to install a microSD memory card.

The bottom end is used for the microUSB connector, the main microphone and the ringing speaker, the top end is for the 3.5 mm mini-jack and an additional microphone.

The earpiece, front camera and light and proximity sensors are located above the top screen.

Touch on-screen buttons can be configured: change the location of the keys, as well as add a button to call the notification panel - convenient.

The fingerprint scanner in Honor 5X is located on the back of the case, below the camera module and flash, as in other smartphones of the company with this element. The scanner works very well and is accurate.

True, there is a drawback associated just with the high accuracy of scanning. Huawei felt (not unreasonably, but still in vain) that the accuracy of the new scanner is so high that it is not necessary to read the same finger several times. As a result, where on another smartphone you can take up to five fingerprints of the same finger at all possible angles and inclinations, in Honor 5X the system will not allow you to scan your finger more than once. I don’t know if this feature will remain for the release, it doesn’t interfere too much, but if without it it would be possible to achieve a 100% scanner response, now it’s about 7-8 correct responses per 10 finger applications to the scanner.

When unlocking by touching the scanner, you instantly get to the main screen, bypassing the lock window.

Screen

The Huawei Honor 5X has a 5.5"" IPS-matrix screen. Display resolution - 1920x1080 pixels (403 ppi). A protective glass with a good oleophobic coating is installed on top of the screen. The viewing angles are almost maximum, even with a strong deviation the image is not distorted (including if the screen is tilted diagonally), there is a good margin of brightness. In my opinion, the juiciness of the image is a bit lacking, but this is more of a nitpick, the display is excellent for a budget smartphone.

Camera

The main camera in the smartphone is a module with a resolution of 13 MP, f / 2.0 aperture, five lenses and a phase focusing system. There is also a dual-tone LED flash. Front camera - 5 MP, f / 2.4.

The camera interface is familiar to all other Huawei devices, moderately simple and understandable, somewhat reminiscent of the camera interface in Apple smartphones. It is possible to take pictures with effects, as well as choose one of the scenes.

A full-fledged manual mode (as in Meizu smartphones) is not here, however, it is also not in Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and A-series from Samsung.

Now directly about photos. The quality of pictures in good conditions (sunny day, street), in my opinion, is decent. Indoors during the day, the smartphone also shoots acceptable, and there is a noticeable deterioration only when shooting at night: noise, reduced detail, lack of contrast and image brightness. But, I repeat, for its category, the smartphone is very good in terms of the main camera and shoots at the level of more expensive devices from HTC (alas), Sony and some other brands.

The front camera is not bad, I have nothing to add here.

The smartphone records video in resolutions up to FullHD, tracking autofocus works during video recording, and the picture can be scaled. You can evaluate the quality of the video in the example below.

Offline work

The Honor 5X has a 3000 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery, which is at the level of most similar devices, with the exception of Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 with a 4000 mAh battery. Looking ahead, I note that it is the battery life that is one of the strengths of Redmi Note 3 compared to Honor 5X.

My sample Honor 5X worked on average until the evening. I removed the device from charging at 9-10 o'clock, and it was completely discharged at 18-19 o'clock, allowing me to practically not resort to the help of an external battery while I was away from home. The load was as follows: an hour and a half of conversations, 10-20 text messages, Gmail, 3-4 hours of listening to music and about 1-2 hours of active use of the mobile Internet (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, browser), cameras (in total, about 50 per day). pictures). This is an absolutely expected good result at the level of competitors, no better and no worse.

I also want to emphasize that in terms of battery life, everything depends on your personal usage scenarios, right down to how bright your screen is, what volume you listen to music at, and where you live (the quality of network coverage depends on this). These little things accumulate a lot, and with seemingly similar scenarios, but with a difference in details, the same smartphone in the hands of different people will show completely different results, keep this in mind.

platform, memory

The smartphone was presented on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 platform, however, after some time has passed since the presentation, Huawei updated the device, and Honor 5x is already on sale based on the Snapdragon 616 with an eight-core processor (four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.2 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5 GHz). The version of the device for Russia has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory for data storage. Graphics system - Adreno 405.

Performance, tests

There are no complaints about the speed of the smartphone. The performance is sufficient for almost any task, including watching videos in high quality, except that some games at maximum graphics settings will not run too smoothly.

Interfaces

The smartphone works in GSM, HSDPA and LTE networks. For FDD-LTE, there is support for Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, the device will work without problems in the LTE networks of all Russian operators.

USB. For synchronization with a PC and data transfer, the included microUSB cable is used. USB 2.0 interface. There is no support for USB-OTG and USB-Host.

Bluetooth. Built-in Bluetooth 4.1 module with support for A2DP and LE (low energy) profiles.

WiFi (802.11b/g/n). Honor 5X uses a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi module, this interface works flawlessly. Like any other modern Android smartphone, the 5X supports the function of sharing mobile Internet via Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi router), as well as DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct standards.

Work with two SIM-cards

The smartphone has one radio module and two slots for nanoSIM and microSIM SIM cards. In the settings, you can set the "default" SIM card separately for calls and separately for mobile Internet, as well as assign a name to each "SIM card". When sending a text message or before making a call, you can choose which SIM card the action will be taken from. In the interface, everything for working with two SIM-cards is made simple and clear.

Navigation

The smartphone supports GPS / A-GPS, Glonass and Beidou. It takes minimal time to search for satellites.

Software features and software

The smartphone runs on Android 5.1, the proprietary Emotion UI, or, as it is now called, EMUI version 3.1, is used as the shell. According to the general logic, the shell resembles MIUI and Flyme, and goes back, respectively, to iOS - there is no separate application menu, all programs are collected on desktops.

There are several themes available in the settings, you can also upload new ones (throw theme installer files into a folder).

There are many detailed settings and useful things available in EMUI: displaying network speed, showing or hiding the operator's name, changing the location of the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen, customizable do not disturb mode, and so on. In the lock window, you can call up a panel for quickly launching a voice recorder, calculator, flashlight or camera, and there are many such details.

The set of standard applications is small, there is only everything you need, and this, in my opinion, is a plus. Unlike Samsung devices, for example, there will be no need to remove or disable (if it is impossible to remove) programs that you simply do not need.

Conclusion

I had no complaints about the quality of network signal reception in Huawei Honor 5X during the use of the device. The vibrating alert is average in strength, it is felt in most situations, the volume of the ringing speaker is also at an average level, there is no special reserve, but in general, it is almost always enough. The smartphone is already available in Russia, the device is sold both in the official Huawei online store and in retail chains. The cost of the device in the company store is 17,000 rubles for a set: a smartphone, a Smart Cover case, a protective bumper and a film.

Of the current competitors for Huawei Honor 5X, I can single out several devices.

First, the Samsung Galaxy A7 with similar specs, a 3300mAh battery and a more premium (if I may say so) design. True, the difference in price for “premium” is about 14,000 rubles (Galaxy A7 costs 31,000 versus 17,000 for Honor 5X), so here the Huawei smartphone looks clearly preferable.

Secondly, Meizu M2 Note. Again, the comparison is not entirely correct, because this is a smartphone from the middle of last year and now its life cycle is already coming to an end. The model costs 16,000 rubles in Russia, according to its characteristics, plus or minus, the device resembles Honor 5X, but it is not equipped with a fingerprint scanner and, in terms of case materials (plastic), of course, it is cheaper.

Thirdly, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. Perhaps the main competitor for Honor. It was released around the same time and represents a similar generation of new budget smartphones in 2016 - with a fingerprint scanner, a metal case and other attributes of expensive devices. Of the advantages of Xiaomi, I would like to note a larger battery (4000 mAh versus 3000 mAh) and, in my subjective opinion, a more strict and expensive design. However, the device costs a 32 GB version based on the Helio X10 chipset, on average the same 17,000 rubles as the Honor 5X. At the same time, when buying xiaomi for the same amount, you do not receive an official guarantee and run the risk of becoming the owner of a smartphone with custom firmware or firmware without the Russian language, these details will need to be specified upon purchase. The 16GB version is cheaper, but the Note 3 doesn't have memory card support, so I'm not reviewing it. The Note 3 Pro (or Prime) version based on the Qualcomm chipset supports memory cards and generally looks more interesting, however, the prices for this device start at 19,000 rubles. As a result, it turns out that in terms of cost, characteristics, availability and ease of purchase, Huawei Honor 5X officially sold in Russia turns out to be more interesting than Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 ordered through Chinese online stores.

Huawei was able to make not just a balanced and inexpensive smartphone, it managed to present this device at the right time and in the right place (if we are talking about Russia). The smartphone has every chance of becoming the bestseller of 2016 with us, for this Huawei Honor 5X has all the ingredients. At the beginning of the year, the device is one of the best on the market in terms of cost and performance, it remains to wait for the main competitors from Lenovo, Meizu and ZTE to appear. But if we are talking about “now”, then when choosing a new smartphone, be sure to pay attention to Honor 5X, even if you don’t like Chinese smartphones, even if you used only real devices from “famous brands” and so on. Believe me, Huawei Honor 5X is a device that can forever change the way you look at the so-called “Chinese smartphones”.

The left shot shows the camera in normal mode, the right one with the maximum possible “beauty filter”. It is a pity that the editorial policy does not allow you to reliably quote the Bredor vocalist. However, I like the photo on the right better.

Among the other amenities of the camera, I note the video recording mode at 120 frames per second in reduced resolution, as well as the built-in function for creating Time-lapse. It somewhat loses to third-party applications in terms of functionality, but it is available right out of the box and completely free.

What is inside

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 platform can be called the best choice for low-cost smartphones. It shows a good level of performance with modest power consumption. Depending on the load, the system automatically uses four cores with a low frequency (Cortex-A53, 1.2 GHz) or four cores with a high frequency (Cortex-A53, 1.5 GHz) - due to this, in theory, optimal power consumption is achieved.

In Russia, a model with two gigabytes of RAM is sold, but in other countries (in China, for example), you can also buy a version with 3 GB of RAM. In case you need a little groundwork for the future, because the programs are getting "heavier" every day. Permanent memory in both cases will be 16 GB, of which you can manage only ten - the rest is already taken by the operating system. But you remember that the Honor 5X has a microSD slot, which can accommodate a card up to 128 GB.
