I drove a front-wheel drive crossover Renault Kaptur 1.6 (114 hp) with a manual transmission. The journalist assessed the driving characteristics of the car, and you can read his conclusions below.

Starting the engine with a button (and only this way: push-button start and a key card are already included in the Captur as standard) - and no vibrations on the steering wheel or gear lever.

The only indication of a running engine is the raised tachometer needle and a slight rustle from under the hood. So light that it makes it difficult to move off accurately: it is difficult to hear by ear whether the engine has reached the required speed. Matter of habit? But even after a dozen starts, I made mistakes every now and then: the clutch and gas pedals are not informative enough.

Acceleration is not impressive, although it meets expectations. The figures obtained on the dynamometer road are also not impressive: 13.8 seconds to “hundreds” and 170.8 km/h top speed. For example, the Nissan Juke and Suzuki SX4, which are similar in power, are more dynamic - one with a CVT, and the other with an automatic transmission.

The traction control system also interferes with an active start. And the fact that it is not provided for is a mistake: Renault is stepping on the same rake as their colleagues in Togliatti with the Lada XRAY model. You can’t sell a car in Russia with non-switchable traction control, especially a crossover!

The point, of course, is no longer about the dynamics of acceleration on asphalt: often only slipping helps you get out of the mud or snow on your own. However, all-wheel drive Captures will still have the ability to disable the anti-skid.

During active deceleration, the car yaws a little and nods quite a bit, which, however, is expected for a crossover with a high center of gravity. But the results of avoiding an obstacle while simultaneously braking from a speed of 80 km/h were pleasantly surprising: the Kaptur obediently follows the steering wheel and freezes after 35 meters. Better than, for example, BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC (36.3 and 43.0 meters).

The suspension here is fundamentally the same as on the Duster, but the spring stiffness (five options for the front axle and four for the rear axle for different trim levels) and the characteristics of the shock absorbers were selected with an eye to handling - on the whole I was pleased with it. There is no sporty sharpness, but there is reliability and unambiguous reactions: even a tense turn can be passed without convulsive steering. But if there are potholes...



Yuri Timkin, who works for the portal Behind the Wheel, took part in a test drive of the front-wheel drive crossover Renault Capture 1.6 at the Dmitrovsky training ground. Below, the journalist described in detail the driving performance of the model, while simultaneously comparing it with the platform Renault Duster.

The Kaptur 1.6 is 72 kg heavier than the Duster with an engine of the same volume - this is partly why it accelerates to hundreds not so vigorously: 12.5 seconds versus 10.9. And if you take three or four strong men on board and throw something in the trunk, the Kaptur will turn into a phlegmatic person.

But on the move it is noticeably quieter than in the Duster. The engine rustles barely audibly, the tires rustle barely noticeably, and aerodynamic noise begins to appear only after 100 km/h. What you need for long-distance shooting! On long trips special value the ride also acquires a high smoothness - irregularities remain practically unnoticed, and the “steering wheel” with a recalibrated electro-hydraulic booster practically does not receive impacts from the wheels (unlike the Duster, which has this as one of its main drawbacks).

On a mountain road, the Kaptur does not try to parody a hot hatchback, but you can’t call it a lout either: it readily shifts in S-shaped ligaments and does not frighten you with excessive rolls.

What’s also captivating is how easily you can drive it in an arc, using only the gas pedal. He pressed it a little and the car floated outwards; when he let go, it screwed inwards. Everything is very clear, without the understatement that many classmates are guilty of.

What about off-road? You are mistaken if you think that the Capture can only be used to go to the bakery. Thanks to the impressive ground clearance (204 mm), short overhangs, lower body kit made of unpainted plastic and standard steel protection engine compartment, the front-wheel drive Kaptur quite confidently rushes along the ruts and does not give up on unpaved climbs.

Although I almost got stuck in the mud a couple of times: the non-switchable stabilization system cuts off traction at the most inopportune moment. An ESP On/Off button definitely wouldn't hurt - and it's available on all-wheel drive versions!

The most pleasant impression on the primer was made by the suspension. No matter what pits I drove through, no matter what bumps I came across, there was not even a hint of a breakdown. Among classmate cars, only single-platform Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster can roam around in “directions” like this.

The information portal RG.ru conducted a test drive of the all-wheel drive Renault Kaptur Extreme 2.0 4×4 with an automatic transmission. Yuri Zubko took a ride in the car and carefully studied the interior of the French all-terrain vehicle, identifying its pros and cons.

What's inside? The front seats have a good profile and have lateral support. During the test, my back did not hurt - and this is the main indicator. The plastic is harsh, it is clear that this is still a budget model, but in the same Hyundai Creta this is not so noticeable.

Very necessary and important buttons are strangely located. So, the seat heating button is on the left side of the seat; turning it off while driving is, to put it mildly, difficult if you are a driver.

And the cruise control couldn’t be found right away - it was hidden behind the handbrake. How to use it in such an arrangement is unlikely to be answered by anyone. There is also no normal armrest where you can throw all the small things. However, the central box is intended to solve the problem of arranging things in the cabin. It's a pity that it looks very cheap. And many are unlikely to be able to avoid the association with Gazelle.

There's not a lot of space in the second row, although you have to understand that the compact crossover segment doesn't offer too much space in the back. Passengers, unfortunately, were left without USB connectors and sockets.

The trunk volume of 387 liters is not the largest in the class. It will be difficult to fit a baby stroller, but a trip to the grocery store will not be a problem. The rear seatbacks fold in a 1:2 ratio, increasing the available volume to 1,200 liters. True, the floor in the cargo compartment will be broken.

Alexander Miroshkin from Motor.ru drove the new Renault Capture for a whole month. During the test, the journalist had a front-wheel drive car with a 1.6-liter engine and a CVT, in which he drove 2,441 km. winter roads Moscow region.

...It was a nice, sunny day. The day before, there had been a snowfall in this area of ​​the Moscow region, turning it into an almost textbook illustration of the term “winter fairy tale.” And everything would have been fine if “Capture” hadn’t started to mope. Although there was no hint of any off-road conditions here, our front-wheel drive crossover was unable to leave on its own from some points.

Five to ten minutes without moving - and the Capture’s muzzle sank a little into the snow. An attempt to move off ended with the non-studded tires of the Nokian Nordman RS2 refusing to cling to anything, and the non-switchable traction control system, having analyzed the speed of rotation of the wheels and comparing it with the zero speed of the rest of the car, instantly succumbed to a panic attack and cut off the traction supply - this is a familiar problem to everyone who has ever driven something front-wheel drive and built on the B0 platform. Moreover, this happens so rudely and unceremoniously that it seems as if something has broken.

There were three of us, and we were pushing a black and orange crossover from a completely flat area, which turned out to be covered with snow a little more than usual. And it’s a shame not even because “Capture” got stuck out of the blue. And not because we didn’t have time to do something (because we still did), but because in all other respects this Renault is a very good car.

So good that, having weighed all the pros and cons, I would give the Captur the title of one of the best family cars for the city for the money.

It is not a drag projectile, but it is dynamic enough to not feel out of place in the flow. At first it may seem harsh, but you quickly realize that this is perhaps the best civilian suspension for Russia in terms of the balance of rigidity and impenetrability. Despite the huge ground clearance, the Capture hardly rolls or sways. And the only thing that will bother you in Capture on a road that looks like cheese with holes is people driving too slowly.

Since entering the market, the Renault Captur crossover has gained considerable popularity among domestic consumers. Moreover, a considerable part of customers preferred the model with a two-liter engine with 143 hp, all-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic transmission.

Later, the manufacturer introduced Renault Capture with a CVT and a 1.6-liter engine. The new single-wheel drive model produces only 114 horsepower. But the versions are also much lower. Manufacturers had hopes that thanks to the new modification, car sales would skyrocket.

As planned, the Renault Captur CVT should add driving pleasure, acoustic comfort in the cabin, and also reduce fuel consumption. The proposal looks interesting, attractive, and economical. What came of it?

Already in the first months, sales started very well. Captur was actively moving up the ladder in the list of best-selling cars. Moreover, the company claimed that the best-selling models are still front-wheel drive models with a CVT.

Renault Captur with CVT – first impression

Of course, such a decision cannot be called a new discovery. The 1.6-liter engine with a CVT has long been known from other models of the manufacturer. As on other cars, when accelerating, the variator imitates an eight-speed automatic, switching virtual gears, and also freeing the engine from freezing at the same speed.

If you find yourself in the role of a passenger, most likely, the car will seem playful, agile and pleasant to drive. Start, movement, acceleration noticeably mask the stepless nature of the box. It seems that you are driving a good automatic machine, distinctive properties which is smooth, responsive, light. You can give the maximum rating. However, this is a misleading impression.

Starting from a standing position on the driver's side makes a significant difference. It's all about the effort on the pedals and steering wheel. Tightness in handling is combined with a feeling of overweightness of the car. However, the model’s capabilities on the highway in the city are quite enough to keep up with the general flow on the road, and also get ahead from time to time.

The start from a place is carried out somehow sedately. Sharp, fast maneuvers are observed. And this is not the most best feature Capture with CVT. Also, excessively high noise in the cabin does not add to comfort. A car with a 2-liter engine is quieter. And the 1.6-liter engine has to work at full strength more often, which is the reason for this result.

City car

After a little time behind the wheel, you come to the understanding that the Renault Capture with front-wheel drive and a CVT is intended primarily for use in urban environments. Driving it on sand, off-road, or going uphill is not very convenient, despite the high ground clearance and the fact that the model is oriented to our roads.

For urban conditions, the car's cross-country ability is quite sufficient. Still, the model is equipped with high ground clearance, and this is its distinctive advantage. The car's overhangs are quite short, which is another plus. Even high curbs are not a problem for cars. But to avoid high load on the transmission, you should not attack the car on two wheels at the same time. It is advisable to enter at an angle.

In an urban situation, the car behaves well, with the exception of some shortcomings. After the hustle and bustle at the start, being behind the wheel is even more exciting. When you press the gas more than 30%, gears begin to actively change. When driving in a straight line, there is no monotonous hum of the engine. The effect of an automatic transmission is created.

The variator also has manual mode. On it the transmission becomes six-speed.

Off-road

How does the car behave off-road? On difficult terrain the car feels quite confident. It handles steep climbs relatively well and moves calmly after stopping on them. However, when driving up a sandy mountain, the car gave up in just a few minutes of struggle, as the overheating protection worked.

The model does not have a separate radiator. Manufacturers believe that for a car that is intended more for urban driving conditions and driving on asphalt, it is not necessary. I rolled back, stood for a while with the engine turned off, and drove further along the plain.

It is difficult for a car to climb up high slopes. The transmission does not like excessive loads. The car's off-road capabilities are so-so. Therefore, you should not create illusions about front-wheel drive. But a hole broken in puddles and a primer are given to the crossover without significant effort.

Dynamics

How does such a decision affect the dynamics? No way. The car accelerates without noticeable enthusiasm. The passport states that the car accelerates to hundreds in 12.9 seconds. In practice it showed about 13.5 seconds.

How convenient is this? If you drive along the highway in dynamic traffic, sometimes you feel a lack of agility. From time to time you have to press the pedal to the floor, after which the acceleration becomes somewhat more intense.

In sluggish traffic the ride is quite comfortable. The variator responds correctly to changes in traction. There is no feeling of thoughtfulness, no jerks, which is often found on versions with an automatic machine.

Fuel consumption

A good consolation is economy. Yet, as expected, she is here. When driving slowly in city traffic, up to 6 liters per 100 km, which is a good result.

In traffic jams, of course, fuel consumption is much higher. However, much depends on the road situation and the driver’s driving style. If you constantly “stomp” and also look for opportunities to overtake, the consumption can be increased to 15 liters. When driving at a general rhythm, consumption can be maintained at approximately 10 liters or less without noticeable effort.

Summing up

So is the car attractive to a potential consumer? Absolutely yes. After all, even in the maximum configuration, the cost of such a car looks very attractive. And if you take into account fuel consumption, the attractiveness of the Captur with a CVT increases significantly.

In general, everything was done quite well. Considering the cost, there are few complaints. If we put aside minor shortcomings, one remains - the lack of dynamics. Still 114 liters. s., which the Capture engine is equipped with, is not always enough.

We previously wrote about and when compared with the two-liter version, which uses a four-speed automatic, the Captur with a CVT loses, but this is compensated by the cost. Compared to the Duster, the Kaptur stands out with more thoughtful and modern solutions. Instead of old-fashioned frame wipers - frameless ones. You open the door with a comfortable handle with a natural grip. The “gate” itself is long and covers the thresholds - the trousers will always be clean.

The salon captivates by refusing total savings. You look at the playful instrument panel with yellow arrows and you can’t help but smile. Here it is, French charm! The multimedia system screen is conveniently located at the top of the center console, and the mirror control unit (lo and behold!) has been relocated from under the handbrake to the left door. I liked the steering wheel with tides - it is adjustable only in angle, but since it is moved closer to the driver (by 20 mm), and the seats are installed higher (by 27 mm), the landing is now more comfortable. And the seat profile has become more correct.

Good visibility is facilitated by recessed rear headrests and decent-sized exterior mirrors, with the left one having an aspherical zone.

But not everything is so rosy: attach mobile phone nowhere, the climate control knobs rotate with different forces and play. It’s also alarming that even a richly equipped car has only four airbags, while its competitors (Ford EcoSport, Suzuki Vitara, Skoda Yeti) offer at least six.

Kaptur engines were borrowed from Duster. The basic 1.6-liter 114-horsepower unit is combined only with a 5-speed manual transmission (a little later, a CVT with seven quasi-gears will be offered for an additional fee). This version is front-wheel drive only. But the 2.0-liter 143-horsepower car comes exclusively with a 4x4 transmission. By default, it has a 6-speed manual, and a 4-speed DP8 automatic is an option. Diesel is not provided: marketers considered that the demand for it would be negligible.

Do you know the easiest way to recognize the 1.6‑liter modification? A full-size spare tire rests under its rear bumper. Just our case! And the two-liter one has a narrow stowage compartment, which is stored in the underground trunk.
