Events and holidays in August. Church holidays and fasts in August

The last summer month will not bring extra days off, but it is also full of memorable dates for Russia, Orthodox people and citizens of the country. Holidays in August 2017 are dedicated to several important events in history, religious events and several national holidays that are so dearly loved by the people of our country.

Holidays in August 2017 in Russia

It is believed that August, as Sunday evening, is no longer a day off, and the summer that ends the month is no longer as hot as its counterparts. But this is not a reason to deny yourself the pleasure of relaxing. Going on vacation to the sea or mountains, visiting other countries or exploring your native land, but if you have children or students in your family, don't forget to return to the beginning of the school year. Moreover, school fairs are held at the end of August, where you can buy everything you need for your child.

But throughout the month, several memorable events are waiting for you, which have not yet been recognized as official holidays in August 2017 in Russia, but people still organize festivities and entertainment events.

For example, at the very beginning of the month, a holiday for fans of foamy beer - the world day of this drink is held on a large scale not only in the homeland and in the most famous places of its production, but throughout the world.

Orthodox people love August because they can enjoy a cascade of "delicious" holidays - honey, apple and final - nut - spas are celebrated at the end of the month.

As for public holidays, in August they honor the Battle of Kursk and its participants, and also celebrate the Day of the Russian Flag.

World Beer Day - August 4

It's no secret that beer is the most popular low-alcohol drink. It is equally loved in all countries of the world, which makes it an international drink. As well as the day on which he is honored. The holiday is not fixed by law, but this does not prevent beer lovers from celebrating it every first Saturday in August.

It is known that beer was brewed in ancient Egypt, as evidenced by the finds of archaeologists. They claim that the first mentions and things necessary for making beer date back to the third century BC. But modern brewing was invented already in the thirteenth century, and since then the technology for the production of foamy drink is practically unchanged - only equipment and methods for its processing are being improved. The first who put the production of beer on stream are the Germans, Icelanders and the British. It is in these countries that there are still the most breweries and beers, the recipes of which were inherited in the family of each brewer and are now a trade secret of the producers.

The holiday has become widespread and the weekend in August 2017 is very fun on all six continents, except, perhaps, Antarctica. Residents of the USA and Mexico, France and the Czech Republic, England and Poland are happy to organize holidays and festivals dedicated to their favorite drink.

Each country has its own special tradition of celebrating. So, in the States they like to play beer pong. The game comes from the usual ping-pong, you only need to hit a beer glass. And the eccentric English arrange a five-mile wheelchair race, the prerequisite of which is to drink a glass of beer in every bar or pub that occurs on the route.

Nativity of Nicholas the Wonderworker - August 11

An old Orthodox holiday that was revived in Russia a little over ten years ago with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II. It is known that in Russia they especially honored and still honor Nicholas the Wonderworker, and his birthday was one of the leading holidays in Orthodox Russia almost from the time of the spread of Christianity, but was abolished under Catherine the Great.

Many books have been written about the life of Nicholas the Wonderworker, and even his birth is a miracle. His parents Nonna and Theophan were pious and zealous Christians who lived in a sacred marriage, but for a long time they had no children. They prayed for the birth of a baby every day and their prayers were heard, in gratitude the parents made a promise that their child would serve God.

Nicholas performed his first miracle at the time of birth, healing her from a serious and fatal illness. In the future, leading a righteous life as a servant of the Lord, he more than once led people out of captivity and dungeons, saved those caught in a storm at sea, and cured diseases. By the example of his simple life, he showed how a true Christian and righteous man should live. And after his death, he bequeathed all his few possessions to distribute to the poor. He died at a ripe old age, giving himself entirely to the Lord.

In Russia, it was believed that he was especially favored by kings and monarchs, and ordinary people prayed to him when there was no longer any hope of salvation. That is why the Nativity of St. Nicholas belongs to the holidays in August 2017 for all believers.

Honey Spas - August 14

With, which is celebrated on this summer day, several memorable historical events are connected at once. The celebration itself appeared at a time when Constantinople was an Orthodox city.

The chronicles describe several events that formed the basis of the name of the holiday - we are talking about salvation through prayer. The Greek emperor Manuel, before a devastating battle with the Saracens, who constantly attacked his kingdom, offered up a prayer to the icons of Jesus Christ and the Virgin, asking them to send him salvation from enemies and put them to flight. They say that at the end of the prayer he received a blessing: from the icons there was a bright light that enveloped the king and sent down wisdom to him.

Much later, the army liberated the lands of Russia from the constant attacks of the Bulgarians, and before the decisive battle, commander Andrei Bogolyubsky offered up an ardent prayer to heaven with a request to help him save Rostovites from the enemy. His prayer was answered and the battle was won.

Initially, on this holiday, the inhabitants of Constantinople visited temples and sanctified water, believing that it would be healing and help to avoid ailments. This tradition appeared due to the fact that during the hot summer period, diseases spread throughout the big city and it was necessary to find a way out of them.

In Russia, the holiday is associated with Vladimir the Great, the baptizer of Russia, since the sacrament of baptism itself took place in water, the holiday is called the Wet Savior. And he became "Medov" much later, when they began to come to the church to consecrate the gift of God - new honey, the pitching of which began just at that time. And although spas does not apply to the official holidays in August 2017 in Russia, the tradition of attending church on this day and blessing honey has remained to this day.

Birthday of the Russian vest - August 19

Frankly speaking, it is difficult to call a vest exactly "Russian", since it first appeared in the fleet - commercial and military - of European countries in the middle of the eighteenth century. But the peculiarity was that the sailors sewed the stripes themselves and they were multi-colored. Since such a disgrace did not fit in with the uniform and military service in the navy, vests were banned for a long time. But at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the situation changed when the so-called Dutch uniform for the navy came into fashion. In principle, we still see a derivative of it now: flared trousers, a short jacket with a cutout at the neck, in which an undershirt - a vest - is clearly visible.

With the military reform in Russia and the change in the uniform of the sailors, the vest was introduced as part of the mandatory uniform. Initially, the white stripes were much wider than the blue ones, and the colors themselves were chosen because they were on the St. Andrew's flag - the official banner of the Navy. Over time, the stripes became the same width, but the colors remained unchanged. Also, the vest has long expanded the expanses of its distribution - today the Russian troops have developed and introduced vests for various types of troops and differ in the color of the stripes.

The date of the holiday was determined precisely by the decree on the introduction of a vest into official use among sailors. The initiative was put forward by activists from St. Petersburg. And while this holiday in August 2017 in Russia does not allocate weekends, but festivities and educational events are organized at which they talk about the history of the vest and its transformations over time. In addition, the vest has long become an element of clothing not only for real men who glorify it, but also for women who have made it a fashionable outfit.

Transfiguration (Apple Spas) - August 19

The great event that took place during the life of Christ became famous almost two thousand years ago, and the holiday was included in the list of the twelve most important in the Christian calendar and complements the weekend of August 2017 and the holidays of believers.

As the Scripture tells, when Jesus Christ with his disciples Peter, James and John climbed Mount Tabor to devote themselves to prayers, the face of the son of God was transformed, he began to shine with a bright light, and his clothes became boiling white. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared to him, who told him what awaits him in the future and how his earthly path will end. Jesus listened attentively to them and asked his companions not to tell about this event until the prophecy was fulfilled. When the prophets disappeared, a black cloud appeared over the mountain and the Voice of God called Jesus his son and ordered to listen to him in everything.

On this day, believers sanctify fruits - gifts of the earth, especially apples, plums and pears, therefore the holiday also has a second name -. There is a belief that mothers who have lost their daughters and daughters who have lost their mother can eat apples only after the Savior and consecration.

Day of the State Flag of Russia - August 22

The date of the holiday is historically determined - in 1991, the tricolor was first raised over the building of the Russian government. In fact, by decree, the flag was returned to its rightful place, since the Bolsheviks replaced the tricolor banner with a red flag.

The history of the flag itself goes back to the time of Peter I, who ordered all merchant ships to raise only such a flag, consisting of three stripes: white, blue and red. It is said that he personally drew a sketch and determined in which order the stripes would be located. But it is not known for certain why exactly these colors were chosen by the great king. Later, Nicholas II recognized this flag as the only state flag, about which he issued a corresponding decree.

Today, two hypotheses are put forward for the meaning of the colors of the flag of the Russian Federation. According to the first version, white symbolizes freedom, blue is a tribute and worship to the Mother of God, who is considered the patroness of Russian lands, and red symbolizes sovereignty. According to another theory: white is a sign of nobility, blue is honesty, and red is generosity and courage. All these qualities are inherent in the Russian people.

Today, Flag Day is not an officially established day off in August 2017, but a variety of events are timed to coincide with this holiday - auto and motorcycle races, youth actions and flash mobs, concerts. Every year this is done in order to emphasize the importance and meaning of the state symbol and tell the citizens the history of the banner.

Victory Day in the Battle of Kursk - August 23

The victory in the battle of Kursk was the very turning point in 1943, from which the long path of the Soviet army to victory over the Nazi invaders began. By presidential decree, the holiday is included in the list of days of military glory of the Russian Federation, although it is not singled out as a day off in August 2017.

Today the holiday is dedicated to all those who participated in one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War. Through the efforts of almost a million soldiers and thousands of pieces of military equipment, enemy troops were pushed back far behind the front line, several cities were liberated, including Kharkov and Orel, and a long-awaited strategic advantage was obtained, which played a decisive role in the further fight against the enemy. The Germans lost more than half a million soldiers, a thousand tanks and aircraft - losses that they never managed to make up for in the future. Thus, thanks to the intelligence data received the day before, the troops were able to prepare an effective defense in advance, deprive the enemy of a significant part of the armaments and the army, and also subsequently go on the counteroffensive.

This memorable date reminds us of the sacrifice our people have made to ensure victory and a peaceful future.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin - August 28

This holiday was introduced by the church and distinguishes it from others by the fact that it is dedicated not to a biblical event, but to what is described in church traditions. It is known that after Jesus was resurrected and ascended, his mother, the Virgin Mary, spent her days in prayer. Her main request was to be reunited with her son. And her prayers were answered.

Archangel Gabriel appeared to her with the good news that her path on earth was coming to an end and she had been given a period of three days to complete all worldly affairs. Mary wanted to say goodbye to the apostles before her death, but they all carried the word of God in different parts of the country. But on the day of her departure to the Kingdom of Heaven, the apostles came to the bed of the Virgin. The legend says that Jesus himself appeared to accompany the soul of the mother to the Kingdom of God.

The coffin with the body of the Mother of God was buried in one of the caves of Gethsemane. But one of the apostles - Thomas - was late and could not say goodbye to her and was deeply saddened by this. So that he could say goodbye to her, the grave was opened, but the body of the Virgin was not found there. Since the Virgin Mary did not suffer an ordinary earthly death, this is called the Dormition. According to legend, she fell asleep on Earth and woke up in Heaven to continue her journey there.

Walnut Spas - August 29

But “Kholshchev” began to be called after a piece of fabric (canvas) with an imprint of the face of Jesus was moved to the Constantinople temple from Edessa. According to the annals, this happened in the last days of August.
