The Slavic Gods went through the entire path of planetary formation at the very beginning of the Planet’s descent to the comic Bottom. And they prepared their descendants in terms of warning them about the need to live under the dictates of the system of Darkness. My travel companion in Nepal was named Binod Kumar. Introducing himself, he emphasized that he came from the Gautam family.

He loved various palace entertainments. After all, he belonged to the royal family of the Shakyas. Through the narrow streets of Kathmandu, we make our way with Binod to the world-famous Swayambutanah stupa. Sliding along the wet stone pavement, I look at my feet so as not to step on a banana peel or watermelon rind, and try not to lose my companion in the dense crowd, behind whom I emerge from the alley into the square. I raise my eyes and My God! I am speechless: right in front of me on the hill rises a stupa of such dimensions that I have never seen even among the ancient structures in the jungle of Sri Lanka.
I do know that the hemisphere of the stupa means the sky, and above it rises a cube with a stepped pyramid topped with something similar to a lampshade.

Where did these bell-shaped structures, somewhat reminiscent of ancient mounds, come from? While traveling around Nepal, I met a lot of them, alone and in groups, on the streets of villages and small towns, and all of them, both very tiny and huge, amazed with their perfect forms.
One Nepalese historian shared with us his thoughts on the origin of Buddhist “aytyas”, or stupas (in the north of the Buddhist world they are also called “chhortens”). The prototype of these religious monuments was apparently the burial mounds of the pre-Buddhist era. The dead were buried in them sitting, with their legs crossed (this is where the famous yoga pose may have originated). Later, the ashes of those burned were placed in the mounds.
I was amazed at the cleanliness and well-groomed nature of Buddhist and Hindu temples. And, of course, an abundance of praying people.
They were everywhere, despite the early morning, in miniature temples in courtyards, small ones on the streets, and huge ones in the center, on Durbar Square. People went to work, to or from the market, and along the way they stopped in to pray, light a lamp, and leave an offering.
“Don’t be surprised,” explained Binod, “our temple is an extension of the house, an obligatory part of life, inseparable from all other problems and concerns, including everyday ones. Do you know how many people live in Nepal? So, multiply this figure by twenty and you get the number of Nepalese gods, and this I, as a Brahmin by birth, can only say in relation to Hindu deities. I simply don’t know how many gods there are in other religions. Here in Nepal there are simply myriads. This means that for every person there are many gods. And you need to please everyone, pray, ask for something or complain about something. Let's follow the woman to this temple in the courtyard. Do you see who is pictured?
I knew the legend about this elephant-headed god. This was a temple dedicated to Ganesha, whose head was cut off by his father, the formidable Shiva, in a fit of rage. Shiva cut off his head too, and it was immediately assigned to the unlucky son. It turned out that he was incredibly lucky. ...When we again found ourselves in the ancient center of Kathmandu, in Durbar Square, where dozens of temples and royal palaces are crowded together, believers were praying under a wooden roof on a platform. Chants sounded, and nearby shoppers were bargaining in the shops, struggling to make their way through the crowd of pedicabs, beggars were shouting, souvenir sellers were shouting, everyone around was chewing betel and spitting purple saliva - in a word, we were surrounded by the real East in the spirit of Kipling.
Remember, I told you that for every Nepalese there are about two dozen gods, continuing the interrupted thought, says Binod, there is a wide choice here, pray to the one you need. If you wish success, place flowers at the statue of the goddess of prosperity Lakshmi; If you want perfection in any skill, dance or music, pray to the goddess of arts Saraswati. My companion leads me to the wall of the temple with strange image. To say that this is a painted bas-relief is to say nothing. A huge figure with a body painted black and a red face with white bared teeth and bulging eyes protrudes from the wall. The multi-armed monster held in its paws a large club, a trident and, in my opinion, a bowl-lamp, and something else.
“Don’t be afraid, this is also the almighty Shiva, the god of creation and destruction, only taking the form of Black Bhairav,” explains Binod. In ancient times, when there were no judges, criminals, instigators of fights, and thieves were brought here, and Shiva-Bhairava administered justice, identifying deceivers and punishing them. You see, there is a black goat tied next to him - a symbol of the “scapegoat”. Anyone who lies before the face of Black Bhairav will face inevitable death...
The next morning, Binod and I took off from the airfield in Kathmandu on a light dragonfly airplane to see in all their splendor the famous Himalayan eight-thousanders, accessible to only a few climbers. But there was such heavy cloudiness that we could barely make out Everest, but, emerging from the clouds, we flew over the Kathmandu Valley, located between the Mahabharat ridge and the Great Himalayas. The cities where two-thirds of the entire population of the Valley live were clearly visible below. This is Tripura The Three Cities, where the capital of the kingdom Kathmandu, Lalitpur (aka Patan) and Bhaktapur almost merged with each other.
Even from a bird's eye view, their appearance struck my imagination. Obviously, I appealed to some correct deity, for I managed to visit each of them. Moreover, it is not far from Kathmandu.
These oldest cities, the capitals of ancient principalities, clearly competed with each other. The unifying center in each was the durbar square, which is bordered by ancient palaces and temples. Narrow streets run away from the square, crowded with low brick houses with tiled roofs resting on pillars. The houses are surrounded by wooden galleries, where clothes dry, carpets hang, laughing people hide behind bars women's faces. Curious people can also be seen in the windows with platbands and shutters that close in the heat. As soon as I now hear the name Lalitpur, a vision appears before my eyes - the steeply rising parabolic tower of the Krishna Temple - the Mandir standing on a hill surrounded by columns. And when you hear the word “Bhaktapur,” you see the five-tiered Hindu temple of Nyatapola with a high staircase decorated at the edges with fantastic stone figures.
Looking from the steps of the “Fifty-five-Window Palace” of the Newar kings (the Newars are the main people of Nepal), looking like a carefully decorated golden box, I imagined what kind of festivities were being played out in front of it...
And then I remembered a trip through Central Nepal, through the flowering Pokhara Valley, where mango and citrus trees, banana and pineapple plantations stretch along the road in a continuous line. There I attended the village Tihar festival, a harvest festival. I heard both labor and ritual songs; I saw women dancing to plant rice seedlings, and men swinging hoes or stabbing with a khukri, a national knife with a curved blade. And after that, Newarka girls in colorful blouses and phariya skirts trimmed with a red border, clinking bracelets, together with young men in fitted shirts, vests and narrow long pants tied with wide patuka belts, walked through the streets, sang songs reminiscent of ditties, and they always made offerings in temples.
People performed dances and songs associated with village life, beliefs, and the entire history of the country in the square in front of the royal palace, in front of temples, organizing round dances around the statues of gods and Newar kings. The ancient stones seemed to have absorbed the colors and noises of previous festivities.
I close my eyes and hear the roll of drums and the sounds of a tambourine. Uneven reflections fall on the paving stones from the flames of burning oil bowls in the hands of slowly walking girls. A drummer follows them; he beats the madala, a drum hanging around his neck, and jumps high to the beat. People move in a circle, holding hands, singing along to the choir. The ankle bracelets of the dancers jingle in time with the music of the orchestra. Here the generous nature of the Nepalese is fully manifested: lively facial expressions, impetuous hand movements, sly smiles. The whirlwind of dancing and the invocation singing that excites the crowd turns into a hymn to the gods - this is the apotheosis of the holiday...
The mirage of memories is shattered by the voice of Binod, who, with genuine concern, curses himself for the fact that we were late for the wedding procession central square Bhaktapura. “These dowry bundles are a gift from the bride’s relatives,” explains Binod. I want to say something about my family, otherwise you will not understand much about our customs. Previously, everything depended on the family, and even now it plays big role in people's lives. I was born in a Brahmanical large family and himself a Brahmin. That's all cousins and sisters, like relatives, and their children my children. But if we are Brahmins, this does not mean at all that we are special, that we shy away from people of other castes or that we all try to be priests. In Nepal there are no such sharp caste differences as in India; people of different castes know each other and serve together. For example, I am an aviator, I work with colleagues from different castes and even religions, I am friends with Buddhists... Sometimes I go to their temples. We take water from a common source in India this is not possible in many places.
All Nepalese are raised to respect their elders; parents still choose a bride for their son, young men get married after their parents agree, and the wife, entering her husband’s house, becomes a member of a large family. Of course, the newlyweds from my family were blessed by brahmans, and after the birth of a child, the young mother does not communicate with other family members for a week or two, until the brahman chooses the name of the child according to the horoscope.
It is customary for us to celebrate not only “Mother’s Day” (like yours on March 8), but also “Father’s Day”. There is also a custom (I don’t adhere to it) to express respect to parents this way: in the morning or evening we touch our father’s and mother’s feet with our foreheads.
We celebrate the stages of longevity with special “Burkha Dzanko” ceremonies. The third stage, when a person saw full moon 1,200 times, that is, lived 99 years, 9 months and 9 days, is called “going to heaven.” But few of us live to that age, and departure to heaven occurs much earlier. I recently buried my mother; she was not even sixty years old. But the death ceremony is a special topic; we will now go to Pashupatinath, where my mother was cremated...
This 13th-century Hindu temple complex was rebuilt and completed more than once; its structures, similar to Indian gopurams and shikharas, and to the pagodas that Nepalese architects, having mastered the secrets of craftsmanship, built in China and Tibet, attract more and more visitors and pilgrims every year .
And now we are making our way through a motley crowd of pilgrims from all over the world.
Sadhus are eternal pilgrims... They walk in long robes, or only loincloths, or even almost without them, shaking their shaggy heads; their bodies are painted with the most incredible patterns. They do not cut, wash or comb their hair, fulfilling their vows to the gods. Saniyasis - learned men in orange robes who dedicated their lives to serving the gods and studying holy books. And behind them, simpler people are pouring in: men in washed shirts - dauras and women in colorful blouses - cholos, decorated with garlands of yellow, spicy-smelling flowers, leaving a strip of the back and belly with the navel open.
Believers bring gifts to the gods. Who can do what: baskets, dishes with fruits and sweets, decorated with tinsel. And in the temples everyone rushes to their patron deities in order to win them over with feasible sacrifices.
While looking in, I almost fell, slipping on the slabs of the floor, which were covered in oil. The gods are buttered here in the literal sense of the word, very abundantly coconut milk and ghee from bowls. If you carefully observe the visitors to the temple, you will notice that in the relations of believers with the inhabitants of heaven, features of everyday realism appear: the size of the offering determines the importance of the request.
At the moment one of the believers laid bananas at the bent legs of the stone bull Naidi, slyly looking at all the ceremonies that had probably bored him, Binod beckoned me to the exit.
Time is running. Although it is only 10 kilometers from here to Kathmandu, we must not be late for royal palace“A very unusual ceremony awaits you there,” he said importantly with a mysterious look. Now look at the embankment of the Bagmati River.
I saw stone rectangular elevations on the slab-lined bank, on one of which long logs, split lengthwise, were stacked. Apparently they were building a big fire.

This is carried to the bank of the sacred river of the deceased to be burned at the stake, and the ashes scattered over the waters of Bagmati. Previously, it was even customary to carry a relative out of a residential building into the courtyard before death.
When my mother died, my brothers and I, as a sign of mourning, lived separately. Thirteen days one must fast and pray while the spirit wanders around the house. We shaved our heads (also as a sign of sadness), shaved off our hair, mustaches, beards, everything, and put on white clothes. We slept on straw, didn’t see anyone, didn’t read, didn’t listen to music. We ate only rice balls, washed down with milk.
They prayed from morning to evening in a “pinde” circle outlined on the ground. God forbid, someone looks at you or, even worse, touches you. Then start all over again.
This is how, my dear, from birth to death, Brahmins spend their lives in prayer and communication with their many gods...
And now, Binod smiled cheerfully, let’s shake off the ashes of those who have left us, let their souls live well in new guises, and we will rush to meet the living goddess of Nepal.
We reached the center of Kathmandu in less than an hour and found ourselves in the courtyard of a wooden palace, built in the 18th century by one of the kings especially for the young goddess. But the inquisitive reader has the right to express bewilderment: how did the young goddess manage to be well preserved from those ancient times?

It must be said that for many years the goddess has been chosen very democratically among three to five year old girls of a low caste. And I must say that this choice is not easy, since the baby must satisfy more than a dozen requirements. It is imperative that the girl has big eyes. Of course, the applicant must be smart and be able to correctly answer many questions regarding the life around her. You should avoid various temptations: jewelry, beautiful clothes, rich food, etc. Well, really, what a beauty contest! One of the requirements: her horoscope must coincide with the royal one.
And now comes the time for the main tests. The main thing for the future goddess is the ability to maintain presence of mind in any unexpected circumstances. For example, a girl should not be frightened by the sudden appearance of a king; this is considered a bad omen. She, naturally, must be able to get out of any situation with dignity. acute situations, have a strong, courageous character. Even an adult can tremble or lose consciousness at the sight of splashing blood when the head of a ram or buffalo is cut off right before his eyes, but a child does not dare to blink an eye. If a girl passes all the tests at the panchayat council of priests, she loses own name, and she is named the new goddess Kumari.
She settles in the same wooden palace with square, tightly closed doors and windows with shutters facing the courtyard, where I wait to meet her on a bench under the yew trees. Probably now they dress it for going out in public. And this is a very complex ritual. First, you need to choose the color of the dress: gold is a symbol of wealth, scarlet is a sign of female power. The servants (several families of her servants live in the palace: cooks, dressmakers and others) comb the goddess’s hair and do a complex hairstyle, decorated with jewelry, put on something like a tiara-crown, and in total the little girl is supposed to wear several kilograms of necklaces and bracelets. Of course, the obligatory third eye is painted on the goddess’s forehead, signifying knowledge and wisdom.
Kumari usually spends all her time in the palace, except a few times a year when she goes to the temple during festivals in honor of various gods, such as Indra, or on the Kumari Jatra festival dedicated to herself. She is seated in a palanquin and carried through the streets of the capital to the jubilant screams of the crowd. But even here she should not look at anyone, since if a person meets the gaze of the goddess, it will bring him misfortune.
Years pass, and at about twelve years old, when Kumari grows up and becomes a girl, she is re-elected again. Then her life usually does not develop very happily, since she is not accustomed to taking care of herself, does not know how to lead household. And most importantly, as knowledgeable people say, young men are afraid to take a goddess as their wife.
In the palace courtyard, anticipation reached its limit. Cameras are clicking, cameras are buzzing, although there is a notice that you can’t take pictures, there’s a fine.
Finally, the shutters on one of the windows opened and a young face appeared framed by a carved frame. It lasted only a moment: a sweet face, a distant look from under long eyelashes and a faint semblance of a smile. All! The goddess disappears like a shadow. The shutters slam shut.
