The beach strip stretches for about 1.5 km, the width is about 30 meters. The shore of Kata Beach is covered with soft sand, which is pleasant and comfortable to walk on. The sea here is clean with a gentle entrance, the depth increases gradually - the place is suitable for families with children. The bottom is comfortable, consists of sand, there are no stones and shells.

Phuket hotels near Kata Beach

There is access to Kata Beach only along the edges of the beach. This is due to the fact that on the first line of the beach there is a large hotel with a fenced area, and you have to go around it. If you do not want to spend a lot of time walking to the beach and back, you should take this point into account and choose housing located along the edges of the beach.

Crowds of tourists, crowds of children, many locals

I waited a long time for everyone to finally pass by so I could take a photo of Slava

Beach cleanliness

Despite such a crowd of people, Kata somehow manages to remain a completely clean beach. There is practically no garbage found in the sand, and bags do not float in the sea. It happens, of course, that a cigarette butt catches your eye or fruit skins, but it’s extremely rare.

Green curly grass - beach decoration

Sand

The sand is ordinary, normal, not white, but not yellow either. It doesn’t creak underfoot like the one next door, but it’s pleasant to walk on.

Waves and sea

The first time we came to this beach was back in mid-November. The season was just beginning then. The waves weren't just big, they looked scary.

Kata at the beginning of the season

During the peak and high season here, the sea softened its temper and the waves became much smaller. During the winter months, December, January and February, the sea is almost always calm. But once every 5-7 minutes, several medium-sized waves still pass, and then the sea calms down again.

Kata Beach in high season

Where to swim on Kata

We noted for ourselves that it is best to swim closer to the middle of the beach. Because on the left side of the beach there are a lot of tourists, and on the right the water smells like sewage and it’s unpleasant to swim, but more on this feature of Kata beach a little later.

Far right end of the beach where the water stinks

The left end of the beach, crowded with tourists

Our opinion: Kata Beach is not the best place for swimming in Phuket. Firstly, the water stinks, secondly, there are too many people, and thirdly, there are big waves.

Although, many people like to jump in the waves. We ourselves used to love, but now, having read about all sorts of dangers, on the contrary, we prefer a calm sea, so that we can swim relaxed and with pleasure, and not fight against the sea elements.

A clear example of how swimming happens on Katya Few people pay attention to the signs posted stating that there are rip currents here, in which it is dangerous to swim. than other beaches in Phuket. Although, in neighboring Karon there are also waves and the same dangerous current. I am still amazed how some parents let their very young children splash alone in the sea when it is so choppy. Even if it’s not deep, such waves only need a little bit to grab the baby and pull him along with him.

Tourists

As you already understand, there are very, very many of them. Kata is the main den of tourists. And no matter what anyone says that it is overpopulated with vacationers, Kata is currently unrivaled. So, if you want a noisy area where you will only hear peace at night, then this is the place for you.

Sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach

Sunbeds and sun loungers on Kata were removed several years ago. Nowadays mattresses are used as sunbeds. Cost 200 baht for 2 mats and an umbrella for the whole day. There is little natural shade, but before lunch you can find shade under the trees.

Where can I order a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience In this article.

Fun on the beach

There are all the standard water activities of Phuket - jet skis (jet skis), banana boats, parachutes.

Entertainment is in demand here, and in order to fly over the sea on a parachute, you still have to wait for your turn. There are more than enough people who want it.

Merchants

Traders and tour sellers have plenty of room to roam. In general, the entire Kata area consists only of trading stalls and overpriced shops.

Cafes and restaurants. Where to eat on Kata

Tourist restaurants and cafes are within walking distance, just go to main road. On the right side there are inexpensive street cafes with prices similar to local ones. There are several 7-Eleven's near the beach.

Cafes for every taste

It was a very convenient idea to put the pots and tables right next to the beach. Prices on the beach are not as high as they could be. The cost of a dish is on average 70-100 baht. Drinks - 20 baht water, 30 cola, 30 coconut, 60 small beer, 100 large. We give Kata beach a big plus regarding food.

The road to the beach and the largest stinking river in Phuket

It would seem that everything seems to be well arranged on one of the most popular beaches in Phuket. If not for one unpleasant feature. I would like to draw your attention to the passage to the beach on the right side. Why is he so remarkable?

Kata Beach - 150 meters

Tourists have to walk along this narrow path with a shabby and painted fence every day. Inscriptions in all languages, but in greater degree native Russian predominates in the form: Dasha + Roma... But this is all nothing compared to the river.

The most interesting thing is that the largest stinking river in Phuket flows into the sea here. When we go there, I cover my nose. And tourists pretend that there is no smell. Well, well, we know that not only does it smell bad, but it stinks terribly of hydrogen sulfide aromas. All this muddy dark slurry calmly merges into the sea in the far right corner of the beach.

But such an amount of waste does not bother anyone to dwell on it. Everyone is happy with everything... Well, we’d better go for a swim

Kata Beach or Kata Yai is located in the southwestern part of the island, between Karon and Kata Noi beaches. This beach is one of the most visited beaches in Phuket; there are always a lot of vacationers who come to Phuket, both on tour packages and on their own.

And this is not without reason; Kata Beach perfectly combines everything you need for a comfortable holiday. There is a wide sandy beach, stretching for more than one and a half kilometers along the sea line, as well as all the necessary tourist infrastructure, providing opportunities for active day and night life.

In the vicinity of Kata Beach there are many different hotels, cafes and restaurants for every taste and budget, ranging from Thai cuisine to restaurants of European and Russian cuisine, as well as fruit stalls, markets and shops, massage parlors, exchange offices and travel agencies, where You can purchase excursions around the island and beyond.

In addition, this beach has a convenient location: on the one hand, it is adjacent to an even more developed and large one, and on the other, to a small, but cozy and quiet one. You can get to both of these beaches from Kata on foot; the distance to Karon Beach is 1.5 kilometers, and to Kata Noi Beach is only a kilometer. It is convenient to get to Kata Beach, both from the airport - a direct bus (minibus) and from Phuket Town - a direct bus ( - Kata - Karon). Near Kata Beach there are such famous attractions throughout the island as Big Buddha and, which offer stunning views of three beaches - Karon, Kata and Kata Noi.

The central and left, southern, part of Kata is more developed. This is where most tourists prefer to stay.

Beach and sea Kata

Kata Beach is a cozy bay with fine white sand that caresses your feet and a clear turquoise sea.

The beach is quite clean. In some places there is natural garbage, small household waste and cigarette butts, but this does not cause discomfort; there is little of that on the beach.

On both sides the beach is surrounded by hills with lush tropical vegetation, which creates a natural barrier to the wind. During high season big waves practically none at sea. The coastline is flat, the entrance to the sea is gentle and sandy.

In search of shade, you can rent sun loungers and parasols, at a cost of 200 baht per day - two sun loungers and an umbrella. There is little natural shade, it comes from the sparse vegetation near the road along the beach line. In the morning, the crowns of trees cast a good shadow on most beach, and in the afternoon, when the sun's rays begin to fall on the beach from the sea, you will have to walk along the beach in search of shade.

On both sides of the beach there are fishing boats in the sea. They are colorful and very cute, which makes the beach even more attractive. However, when walking along the beach, or swimming in the sea near boats, you need to be careful, you can get hurt on the fastening rope.

On the southern side of the beach, almost on the hill, there are several cafes overlooking the sea and the beach, and there are also hotels here.

On the northern side of the beach, the one closer to Karon, in the shade of trees, there are also several cafes and restaurants.

Beach activities are also developed on Kata Beach. Among the most popular: riding a banana or a tablet sea waves, you can ride a jet ski (cost 30 minutes - 1,500 baht for 1 person, 1,600 baht for 2 people) or fly over the sea surface with a parachute (1,200 - 1,500 baht).

The small island of Pu (Ko Pu or Koh Pu) is clearly visible from the beach and can be reached by boat. There is an opportunity to sunbathe and meet marine life by going scuba diving.

The Big Buddha statue is clearly visible from the beach and surrounding area, which can be reached on foot. We will tell you how to walk from Kata Beach to the Big Buddha in this article below.

Promenade along Kata Beach

There is no embankment as such with developed tourist infrastructure near Kata Beach. But, above the sea line, there is a road along which, on one side, there is a fence behind which the hotels are located, and on the other, there is a pedestrian sidewalk.

Although this road is passable, we saw few cars.

Closer to the southern part of the beach, near the embankment, is the Community Park. The park is green and well maintained. The park has recreational facilities, sports and children's playgrounds, and jogging tracks.

There are parking spaces within the park. Park opening hours are from 09:30 to 21:00.

Streets, cafes, restaurants, shops and entertainment

In the Kata area, above the sea line, passing three parallel streets, they are also carriageways.

The first one we talked about is the embankment. The second, most developed and lively Kata Rd, is where the bulk of cafes and restaurants, street food, shops and souvenir shops, as well as massage parlors, tour desks, exchange offices and hotels are concentrated.

Following this street to south direction, you can go to Kata Noi beach

And heading north, towards Karon beach

The third street, which is also the furthest from the beach, is Patak Rd. On both sides of the road there are also shops, a gas station, a few cafes and hotels.

There is a large wholesale supermarket Makro food service, where you can buy products both retail and wholesale. Something like the Metro, only more modest in size.

Markets near Kata Beach

Kata is also rich in markets; there are three of them. All of them are located close to each other. The landmark is the Sugar Marina Resort-SURF-Kata Beach hotel.

The indoor market is open to the public every day, where they sell clothes, tourist equipment and all sorts of other things. There is also a place to eat.

This market is difficult to pass by; from afar, the colorful figures of King Kong and the Hulk catch your eye. Children really like them, shouting: “Look!”, the kids joyfully run to the fairy-tale figures.

Nearby, on Mondays and Thursdays there is an on-site service night market- Kata Night Market. It’s better to come after 16:00, that’s when everyone outlets will already be open. At the market you can buy clothes, oils, soaps, bags, shoes and other everyday goods, as well as fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, drinks and prepared foods.

The grocery and fruit market is located nearby, just above the first two markets. Located on Patak Rd. The market sells fruits and vegetables.

Attractions. Things to do

There are few attractions as such within the beach. Perhaps a small temple, near the night market

And the famous eponymous Buddhist temple Wat Kata or Wat Kitti Sangkharam. This temple is located at the foot of the mountain, on the third, farthest street from the beach - Patak.

This temple occupies quite large territory and has bright colors which gives impressive appearance. On the territory of the temple there are: a statue of Buddha, a monastery pavilion, monks’ dormitories and a primary children’s school.

If you move towards Karon Beach, you can visit a small one. The main activity in the park is, of course, playing mini golf. However, the park itself is decorated to resemble the Jurassic period; on its territory there are several small artificial caves, a waterfall and a stream, as well as dinosaur statues, and a stylized bar and restaurant. The distance from the center of Kata Beach to Dino Park is 1 kilometer.

In the vicinity of Kata you can visit several attractions that are among the top ten in Phuket:

1. The most famous and visited, which offers a picturesque view of three beaches - Karon, Kata and Kata Noi.

Get to observation deck You can, either by taxi or rented bike, or on foot, covering almost 4 kilometers.

From Kata Beach you need to go out onto the wide road Kata-Sai Yuan Rd and follow it to the observation deck. But you have to make a small detour.

It is more convenient and faster to go through. First we reach Kata Noi beach, then we follow the street that departs from the center of the beach.

This is what the entrance to this road looks like from the roadway near Kata Noi beach

Following this road you will go uphill, first on a concrete road, after which the road will become dirt. Without turning, in about 10 minutes you can reach the wide road Kata-Sai Yuan Rd, after which, turning right, you will be almost at Khok Chang Kata Safari. The farm will be on the left side of the road. At the farm you can ride elephants through the jungle. Without turning anywhere from the farm, after 850 meters you will find yourself at the Karon View Point.

2. From Kata Beach, if you go towards the neighboring Karon Beach, you can walk to another attraction of the island -. The path is not close, it is about 7 kilometers, but walking is quite possible. To do this, you will first need to exit from Kata Beach onto the wide road Patak Rd and follow towards Karon. WITH right side There will be a Big Buddha sign on the road. Turn right onto Patak Soi 12 and follow the signs going up the mountain and you will come straight to the Big Buddha.

Turn and "BIG BUDDHA" sign on Patak Rd

Currency exchange at Kata Beach

There are many exchangers near the beach. The rate differs from exchanger to exchanger, but only slightly. There is no commission. The most favorable rate is for the dollar, in denominations of 50 and 100 units; banknotes in denominations of 5 - 20 dollars are exchanged at a lower rate.

At Phuket airport the rate is less favorable than on the beaches. Therefore, if you arrived in Phuket by plane, we advise you to exchange a small amount at the airport, which will be enough for the trip to the hotel, and then exchange larger amounts on the spot.

Where to stay on Kata Beach

The choice of accommodation on Kata Beach is very large; there is a wide range of hotels, guesthouses, villas and apartments, from budget to expensive and respectable.

The best apartments and hotels, for our taste, are located on the hill, between Kata and Kata Noi beaches. Here the houses are surrounded by greenery, and the absence of tourist life nearby creates peace and quiet. Also, in just a few minutes you can walk to both Kata Beach and Kata Noi Beach.

All accommodation facilities on Kata Beach and near it are available.
