What holidays do Muslims have in August-September 2019: brief description, dates

If you look at the Muslim calendar, there are few holidays. Kurban Bayram is considered one of the most solemn. It begins in 2019 after sunset on August 11 and ends at sunset on August 14.

This is the day of sacrifice. On this day, the family sacrifices an animal. In the evening, a huge table is set and the family prays.

Features of the Kurban Bayram celebration:

  • Even before sunrise, it is necessary to wash the body and put on clean clothes. After this, loved ones ask each other for forgiveness.
  • After sunrise is carried out morning prayer(prayer). Afterwards, an animal is sacrificed. It could be a camel, sheep, ram or goat. Under no circumstances should a sick or very weak animal be killed.
  • A man over 18 years old is allowed to participate in the sacrifice procedure. He must be sufficiently wealthy, sober and healthy.
  • After the animal is sacrificed, its carcass is divided into three parts. One part is left in the family. The second part is given to neighbors. The rest must be distributed to the poor. After that, everyone goes about their business. Women are preparing a festive dinner. In the evening the whole family gathers at the festive table. A prayer of thanksgiving is offered.
  • On this day one cannot refuse help and alms to anyone. Everyone who turns to you for help will have to receive alms. This is a must. God will punish for refusal.

It's huge Muslim holiday. Believers believe that it was on this day that Allah created the heavens, angels and Adam. According to some prophecies, it is on the day of Ashura that the day of judgment and the end of the world will occur. That is why on this day Muslims pray fervently and ask Allah for forgiveness for their sins.

In general, Muslims believe that several events occurred on the Day of Ashura:

  • The grandson of the great prophet Muhammad Hussein has died. On this day people mourn and hold prayer services. The man was a believer and died a painful death
  • Salvation of the Prophet Musa by the Almighty. But on the same day, Allah destroyed Pharaoh and his troops. This speaks of the mercilessness of God
  • Adam's repentance for his sin
  • The first man went to Heaven

This day is not particularly celebrated. It is believed that it is necessary to fast and constantly pray on this day. Shiites mourn for Hussein and hold prayer services.

When is Ashura Day in 2019 and what holiday is it?

On the streets of the city you can see circus performers putting on performances and entertaining passers-by. Dramatic performances are staged about the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Such performances are quite strange. The actors themselves and everyone who wants to torture themselves, showing how unlucky and how Hussein suffered. Basically Allah teaches humility and obedience. Therefore, fasting on the day of Ashura is considered optional, but desirable. Allah will take this into account on the Day of Judgment. You can watch the video for more information about what and how to do on the day of Ashura.

This year 2017, Muslim holidays are presented in the Islamic Hijri calendar for each month, with the days of celebrations, which you will find below on the page.

It is important to know why there are so few holidays in the Muslim calendar, and all because at one time the Prophet Muhammad did not allow his followers to celebrate non-Muslim holidays, take part in them and count them among the holidays of Islam.

When a devout Muslim takes part in a religious Islamic holiday, he thereby joins the ritual of his religion, which he practices, honors and which completely suits him.

What holiday do Muslims have in 2017 - what are they by month?

Around that time, Muslims began to have two great holidays - Breaking the Fast (Eid al-Fitr), which begins immediately after the fast of Ramadan, and Sacrifice (Eid al-Fitr), marked by the end of the Hajj (the pilgrimage of devout Muslims to pray and worship shrines to Islamic Mecca).

Initially, other Muslim dates were not taken into account and were considered significant Islamic holidays. Therefore, there were no ceremonial events on their occasion.

At the same time, it is worth noting that at approximately the same time, special places were allocated in the Muslim calendar for such solemn days, How:

– Juma – Namaz ( friday prayer among devout Muslims) is one of the most favorite days of the week for Muslims, and Juma begins after sunset on Thursday and continues until sunset on Friday.

– The Day of Ashura is a day of mourning, remembrance and voluntary fasting.

– Arafat Day is the last day of Hajj (Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca), when the faithful visit the holy Mount Arafat and perform namaz prayer there.

– Night of Predestination – on this night they read the Koran, pray and ask for forgiveness for their sins

These holidays for the Muslim world were predestined not as a time for fun, but as days for diligent worship of the Lord God.

All other festivals in Islam are considered memorial dates.

Which is quite unusual, although not at all surprising - given the orientation of the Islamic religion, the attitude of Muslims to celebrating holidays is not at all familiar to, for example, Christians or Catholics.

If for some people who profess a religion other than Islam, some religious holiday is considered a reason to have fun and take a break from everyday life, then for Muslims any celebration is just another reason to increase their good deeds, which, according to the faith of Islam, will be credited to them on the Day of Judgment, compared with their bad deeds and deeds.

Days of celebration of some holidays among Muslims give them an extra incentive to worship Allah more diligently. So, residents Muslim countries on sacred days and nights for them, they read certain prayers The Koran and perform ritual prayers, and they also strive to please their loved ones, relatives and even strangers.

On the days of celebrating some triumph of Islam, it is customary among devout Muslims to visit each other, invite guests to their home, set a rich table, give donations to those in need of help, and give gifts.

Religious Muslim holidays in 2017 will be celebrated according to the lunar Islamic calendar and in strict accordance with the Hijri. Due to the fact that Islamic holidays are “tied” to the Lunar calendar, they shift by about 11 days every year.

It should be noted that initially the word “Hijra” meant a pilgrimage-journey from Mecca to Medina.

The year of the end of the Hijra - in the Muslim chronology - became the first and it was from that moment that the modern history Islam.

It is also important to remember that the day in the Islamic calendar is counted not from the moment of sunrise, but from its sunset.

Thus, the night of the new day for Muslims is the previous day.

Muslims in Arbain organize pilgrimages to holy places, and the most important part of the program is the reading of surahs at the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina. This tradition got its name - Ziyarat; this part of the ritual also includes the obligatory decoration of the tomb and sacrifice. In addition, every self-respecting Muslim tries on this day to show his kindness and help those in need: give alms, food, money, and so on.

Miraj in 2017 – April 25

The festival of Miraj is dedicated to the dream of Muhammad, when the Archangel Gabriel ascended him to heaven. According to legend, Allah then showed him both hell and heaven, and then allowed him to appear before his throne. Also in this dream, Muhammad had the opportunity to communicate with other prophets.

Miraj holiday date

On April 25, 2017, all Muslims will celebrate Miraj. If we talk about the lunar calendar and Islamic traditions, they celebrate it on the 27th of the month of Rajab.

Holiday traditions

It is noteworthy that in different cities traditions and rituals may vary slightly. For example, in some it is customary to eat food as always, but in others, on the contrary, to abstain completely, and still others, perhaps, try to just eat vegetables dietary dishes. However, they are united by one tradition that is observed everywhere. After sunset, in every Muslim family set a rich table with an abundance of meat and fish dishes, be sure to invite relatives and close friends. Hands are washed before and after the meal, and guests are given a special bowl of water to perform this ritual. Before starting dinner, Muslims say: “O Allah, bless this food and save us from hell.” But at the end: “Thanks be to Allah, who sent us food and drink and made us Muslims.” Only the head of the family and the owner of the house should start the meal, and then everyone else.

Holiday traditions

As we have already mentioned that Juma was established in honor of the Muslim community. That is, so that all believers on this day always gather and perform Friday Juma prayer, which, in fact, is what they do before today Muslims. Also, many believe that all good deeds done on this day will be more highly valued, which means the reward will double.

Muslim New Year 2017 (Hijri New Year)

It is from this day that the Muslim lunar calendar begins. Despite many differences in terms of traditions on this holiday, they still have something in common with us. According to folk superstition As you spend the month of Muharram, the whole year will pass.

Holiday date: Muslim New Year

The Muslim New Year is celebrated on the 1st of the Muslim month of Muharram. In 2017 it is September 22. Although this holiday is considered the New Year in Islam, it is official holidays it is not included and is not marked as they do here.

Holiday traditions

As you already understand, there are no special traditions on this day. Usually a special fast is observed throughout the month - As-saum. According to the canons of Islam, eating and drinking water, various entertainments, incense, bathing, smoking and sexual intercourse are prohibited during daylight hours. At night, all prohibitions are lifted, however, many clergy do not advise allowing yourself too much.

Each culture has different traditions, teachings, and even holidays. For example, Islam has its own Muslim calendar, which indicates special days, for example, Muslim New Year or others significant days, which in Christianity are considered holidays, but in Islam, it is more likely memorable days when you should pray even more diligently and not go out on a grand scale.

The fact is that during the formation of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad prohibited those who profess Islam from celebrating any other holidays, such as Christian ones. At the same time, if we single out a Muslim holiday, the prophet established a day called Ramadan Bayram (the holiday of breaking the fast), as well as the day of Kurban Bayram (the holiday of sacrifice). These dates are the main holidays in the Muslim world. But on these dates, Muslim holidays are not limited. There are other so-called holidays, but they are less significant and are not celebrated as widely by Muslims; rather, these are dates when Muslims pray and worship Allah with great zeal.

Muslim holidays in 2017: calendar

The calendar of Muslim holidays will help you figure out when a particular holiday begins and ends.

Nowruz

Nowruz is a Muslim holiday, but it is more folk than religious. Every year the date when Navruz should begin does not change, it is March 21, and in 2017 too. This day was included in the Muslim calendar as a veneration of the equinox. On this day, those who profess Islam remember the dead and worship the forces of fire, an element that is considered life energy.

Interesting! Narvuz also has the Tatar New Year. Despite the fact that the Tatars living in Russia celebrate the New Year, like most Russians, on the night of December 31 to January 1, the traditional date of this holiday among the Tatars is spring equinox.

Night Baraat

The 2017 calendar also includes a date such as Baraat night, which will take place on May 11 in 2017. This holiday is a day of goodness and philanthropy, forgiveness of sins, correction and purification. One of the important traditions of this holiday is the morning ritual of ablution. At the same time, they prepare for ablution in advance, wash white clothes, or buy a new one, clean the house, and after the ceremony they put on clean clothes and sit down for breakfast, and, before starting the meal, they read a prayer.

The year according to the Muslim calendar also includes the period when Muslims fast. This period is called Ramadan, which lasts a month. In 2017, Ramadan will begin on May 27 and end on June 25. Therefore, Muslims spend the summer, namely its beginning, in strict fasting. Ramadan is the most important period for Muslims, this period is considered to refer to one of the five pillars on which all faith rests. Ramadan Bayram, as established by the Prophet Muhammad, is one of the most important dates in the life of Muslims, and given that during this period all supporters of the faith observe strict fasting, such a serious period cannot be called a holiday.

Throughout Ramadan Bayram, Muslims pray a lot, give up many foods, abstain from intimacy with their wives, and try to do more righteous deeds.

Before the second most important holiday among Muslims, which was established by the prophet, comes, namely, Kurban Bayram, adherents of Islam celebrate the following days:

Uraza Bayram - June 26, 2017 (the day when Muslims sum up Ramadan);
Night of Predestination - June 21, 2017 (one of the most powerful nights for Muslims, when they can ask their God for everything, and this desire will certainly be fulfilled, since it was on this powerful night that the Koran was sent to earth).

Kurban Bayram

As already noted, it was the Prophet Muhammad who commanded to celebrate this day as especially important. This holiday is the sincere faith of Muslims in Allah, the day of unity with him and approaching him.
Due to the fact that Muslims follow the lunar calendar, the dates of the holiday are shifted. The main Muslim holiday in 2017 will take place on September 1. On Kurban Bayram, Muslims also fast, but it lasts 10 days, when the fast ends, everyone performs ablution, puts on white clothes, and the men go to the mosque.

Since the holiday is a day of sacrifice, an integral part of it is in the evening, after the sermon, to slaughter an animal and prepare it for the holiday meal. In addition, part of the animal must be shared with those who need help.

Hijri New Year

The Muslim New Year 2017 marks the beginning of the lunar calendar. The Hijri New Year, despite the difference in traditions compared to the usual New Year, has similar features. So, for example, Muslims believe that as they spend the holy month of Muharram, so a year will pass according to the Islamic calendar. So what year is it now, based on the Muslim calendar? The Hijri New Year will not begin until September 22, and therefore, given that it is February, it has not yet arrived.
The Hijri New Year is not widely celebrated by Muslims today, since this holiday does not have any special traditions. If we operate with the canons of Muslim culture, then they are not allowed to eat, drink or have fun during the day, but at night all these prohibitions are lifted, but Muslims still do not allow themselves too much.

The full calendar for the Muslim year can be seen in the photo, and also downloaded:

Interesting! Muslims do not celebrate Easter as a special day. If we take some dates in the Muslim calendar as an analogue, then this will be the period when Ramadan ends. The period beginning after Ramadan can be called Easter.

As you can see, many dates from the Muslim calendar are tied to some significant periods in the formation of Islam. These days, as a rule, do not give Muslims a “green light” for entertainment, but, on the contrary, call them to more diligent prayers and adherence to traditions.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Islamic year does not begin on January 1, but on the day of the Hijra, when the Prophet Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. Each of the 12 months of the Muslim calendar has an average of 29 days. However, there is no fixed start and end date for each month as they float according to the phase of the moon (from new moon to new moon). In total lunar year has 354 days, so it is 11 days shorter than the solar one. That is why every year the calendar shifts by 11 days, and, consequently, the dates of some holidays change.

There are a total of 36 holidays in the Muslim calendar. Each of them has sacred meaning for representatives of the Islamic world.

The Muslim calendar differs significantly from Orthodox calendar. And this applies not only to significant dates of these religions, but also to the calculation method. The calendar of Muslim holidays is calculated according to the lunar calendar, and therefore even the Muslim New Year is celebrated by adherents of Islam on a completely different day. This is because the Prophet Muhammad forbade Muslims from celebrating any holidays, be they European dates or Christian holidays, based on the fact that Islam is full of its own, special, memorable dates, which have history and traditions. Also, the Prophet Muhammad established two special holidays that play huge role in this culture it is Ramadan Bayram and Kurban Bayram. Hijri New Year is not one of the important holidays for Muslims, however, it marks the period from which the lunar year begins. In order not to get confused about important dates and to get to know Muslim culture better, you can use a calendar that highlights Muslim holidays.

As already noted, there are two special holidays in the Muslim world that were established by the prophet. Despite the loud name “holiday”, Muslims take these days seriously and do not allow themselves to go out on a grand scale. Rather, for them, holidays are special days that have their own traditions and on which they should pray more and become closer to Allah.

Ramadan Bayram

Ramadan Bayram is the period when Muslims fast for the longest time (30 days). This period is considered so important that adherents of Islam consider it one of the five pillars on which their entire religion rests. The 2017 calendar marks the beginning of Ramadan on May 27, and the end of the fast on June 25. Summer for Muslims, or rather its beginning, is held in strict mode.

If we talk about the months of the Muslim calendar, then Ramadan is also the name of the month, the ninth in a row, according to the Islamic months, which begins after the month of Shaabat. During this period, Muslims follow strict fasting, pray a lot and do not allow themselves any entertainment.

This period has its own traditions, which Muslims observe. During Ramadan, in addition to fasting and prayers, followers of Islam try to do as many good deeds as possible in order to cleanse their souls of evil. In addition, the beginning of Ramadan also means giving up intimacy with your wives.

Interesting! The year according to the Islamic calendar also includes the period of analysis of Ramadan, which lasts three days from the end of the fast. This period is analogous.

Kurban Bayram

The Muslim holiday Kurban Bayram, which the Prophet Muhammad also commanded to celebrate, is a holiday of sacrifice. This holiday, which is celebrated once a year according to the Muslim calendar, personifies pure and sincere faith in God, unity with him and approaching him.

According to the Islamic calendar, this month is called Dhul-Hijjah, and the holiday falls on the 10th. If we translate this into the standard calendar and 2017, then Kurban Bayram should begin on September 1 and last exactly 24 hours.

Speaking about traditions, it should be noted that on the eve of the holiday, Muslims also fast, but not for 30 days, but for ten. When the fast should end, Muslims perform their morning ablutions, put on clean, snow-white clothes, and the men go to the mosque. Despite the fact that this day is a holiday, it is not customary to eat in the morning. The meal takes place only in the evening, and during the day the believers still go to the sermon. And only after the sermon do Muslims begin main tradition the holiday is a sacrifice. They slaughter a sacrificial animal, which they then prepare for the evening meal, and also share it with those in need. Kurban Bayram takes place in kindness and peace, and one cannot refuse help if anyone asks for it, even a stranger.

Those who profess Islam should definitely know when Kurban Bayram and Ramadan, the most important holidays in the Muslim world, begin.
