I broke the top of the money tree, how to root it. Money tree - home care, plant flowering. How to replant a money tree

Crassula is one of the most popular indoor plants due to its unpretentiousness and intensive growth. Depending on the variety, it may look like a bush, a tree, or there are hanging forms. Propagating a money tree at home is easy if you know the intricacies of the procedure, choose the right tool and timing.

Basic methods of plant propagation

Crassula propagation is carried out in several ways:

  1. Cuttings are the easiest way, since planting material is always at hand. The cutting can be cut from a living plant or when the tree breaks and dies.
  2. Seeds. This method is more labor-intensive, since it is not easy to obtain planting material. IN room conditions Crassula blooms rarely, so it is not always possible to collect seeds from it. And ready-made store-bought ones have a low degree of germination; for shoots to appear, they need high temperature and greenhouse conditions.
  3. Leaves. Rooting occurs in water or very moist soil. In this case, the leaves often rot or dry out, so with this propagation method it is necessary to use at least 5-10 pieces to increase the chances of shoots appearing.

Indoor Crassula can be propagated by any of these methods. But some variegated varieties do not reproduce by leaves, some species bloom extremely rarely, so it is almost impossible to get seeds from them.

Features of cuttings

Propagating Crassula by cuttings is the surest way if you want the sprout to quickly take root, and after 3-4 weeks you can transplant it into a permanent pot. The cutting takes root in 20-30 days, and when using a growth stimulator - in a couple of weeks.

When propagating in this way, you must follow several rules - cut off a cutting of sufficient length, treat the cut site and select the right soil for rooting.

How to select and cut cuttings

Propagation of the “money tree” by cuttings requires compliance with certain rules, especially regarding the selection of planting material and cutting cuttings:

  1. Inspect the plant completely; for propagation, choose a shoot at least 10 cm long. Suitable cuttings up to 15 cm.
  2. The stems and leaves should be free of rot spots, damage from pests, dried parts or deformation. The planting material must be completely healthy, otherwise there is a risk that it will not take root or the resulting plant will be sick.
  3. As part of cuttings, 2-3 cuttings are cut at once, if possible. By planting them in the soil at the same time, you will increase the chances of at least one taking root.
  4. Tip and stem cuttings are optimal for propagation. They provide an opportunity for short term get a developed plant that will retain all the characteristics of the mother specimen.
  5. Each layer must have at least 3 nodes and at least 3 pairs of leaves. For propagation, the shoot must be cut with a sharp tool using an oblique cut. The bottom cut should be closer to the node; roots will come out of it over time.
  6. Then dry the planting material in the open air for at least one day.

It is not necessary to use root growth stimulants. If you follow the technology, then almost 100% of the cuttings take root without auxiliary methods. Roots can appear even after a few days if you provide sufficient light and high air temperature.

Rooting methods

If you want to quickly propagate Crassula, it is important to create conditions for the rooting of shoots so that the temperature, light level and air humidity are constant for at least 2 weeks or more.

In water

Rooting a fat plant in water is more difficult than directly in sand or soil, since with such high humidity the planting material often rots, especially if the room temperature is below +20 degrees. But this method makes it possible to inspect the plants and immediately notice the appearance of roots in order to dive the shoot into the ground for permanent cultivation.

Technology:

  1. Take a jar or glass, steam it in advance or disinfect it in another way. Boil water, cool, stir one tablet of activated carbon in it.
  2. Remove the leaves from the bottom of the cutting. If this is not done, the process of rotting will quickly begin and the planting material will be spoiled.
  3. Place the shoot in a chilled boiled water and place it in a place where there is enough sun, but not its direct rays, and the temperature is maintained at +23...+25 degrees.
  4. Rooted shoots can be planted in a complete soil mixture in separate pots after roots at least 2 cm long appear at the cutting site.

This method has its pros and cons. On the one hand, rooting occurs faster, and it is possible to observe the appearance of roots. But on the other hand, the risks of rotting of planting material, especially at reduced temperatures in the room, are high.

In the substrate

Rooting immediately in the ground usually produces a higher percentage of healthy seedlings suitable for planting. The shoots can be placed directly into a mixture of turf and leaf soil with the addition of river sand, or coarse sand and perlite can be used separately. They also take root well in ready-made store-bought soil intended for succulents and cacti.

Boarding procedure:

  • select a small container or pot, the diameter should be at least 7 cm. It is necessary to lay drainage up to 1/3 of the height of the entire container;
  • pour soil over the drainage layer, but do not compact it, water it lightly;
  • Place the cut and dried cutting in the center so that its lower end is recessed by 3 cm, first remove the leaves in this area;
  • Place the flowerpot or pot in a place where the temperature remains at +22 degrees, there is no direct sunlight, but enough light during the day.

There is no need to set up a mini-greenhouse to speed up rooting. A humid microclimate can lead to rotting. The main thing is to water as the soil dries, avoid stagnation of water, regularly moisten the shoots using a spray bottle, and also ventilate the seedlings if they are in the dry air of the room.

Subtleties of propagation by leaf plate

It is more difficult to propagate Crassula by leaves, since such planting material has a low rooting percentage. However, if you do not want to spoil the appearance of the tree's crown, you can try the leaf propagation method. The procedure will take longer than other methods.

How to choose a sheet

With such propagation, it is necessary to choose planting material especially carefully, otherwise it will affect the health and appearance of the adult plant in the future:

  • select leaves that are large, brightly colored and elastic to the touch;
  • if the mother plant has leaves that already have aerial roots, the likelihood of rooting increases significantly;
  • inspect the planting material for damage, rot, yellow spots or tips, pay special attention to the back of the leaf blade, since this is where most pests hide;
  • separate several leaves at once in the middle part of the tree, the lower ones usually already have yellowing, are drier and will die before the roots appear;
  • the upper young leaves are not yet developed, they will take root for a very long time, and before that moment they rot.

It is necessary to cut the leaves with sharp tools, make the cut obliquely, neatly, so that the delicate flesh does not become disheveled.

Rooting secrets

Rooting of the fat plant with leaves can be done immediately in water or in the ground, but a more convenient option is to plant it in a soil mixture:

  • Fill a flat plate or low wide container with soil and lightly moisten it;
  • Dry the leaves in the fresh air 2 days before;
  • do not insert the sheet vertically into the ground, but place it on the surface so that the base is pressed tightly to the ground - dig it down to 1/3 of the height or place it around the perimeter, leaning it against the sides;
  • If leaves fall, prop them up with wooden sticks or plastic staples.

When using this method, you can use a greenhouse, which is constructed using hermetically sealed polyethylene or a glass jar.

Cover the container with them and ventilate them daily so as not to lead to rotting and increased air humidity. A greenhouse can be built from any materials, the main thing is that they transmit a sufficient amount of light.

Propagation by seeds

Propagating Crassula by seed is a task for experienced gardeners. This method is more labor-intensive, the germination rate of this crop is low, so a maximum of 20-40% of all planting material germinates, depending on the created climatic conditions.

It is much more convenient and easier to propagate a flower with leaves or cuttings, but if you do not want to spoil the decorative appearance of the crown by cutting off the cuttings, it makes sense to use germinated seeds. After the emergence of shoots and rooting, they retain all the characteristics of the mother plant.

How to get seed material yourself

Seeds from the “money tree” can only be collected after flowering, which does not happen every year in indoor conditions, and some specimens do not bloom at all if they receive little light or insufficient air temperature. This procedure is performed more often by breeders who want to obtain new varieties and hybrids.

Crassula seeds look like small nuts Brown with hard skin. Due to the fact that the skin is dense, almost waterproof, rooting takes several times longer than when planting with leaves and cuttings. You can collect seeds from any type of Crassula and dry them before using them for propagation. Choose the largest ones that are not deformed. This way you can increase the germination percentage.

How to germinate seeds

Germination procedure:

  1. For sowing, use the same soil as when planting leaves and cuttings, that is, a mixture of leaf, turf soil and sand or ready-made substrates.
  2. Place the soil mixture in tall flat plates or other containers and lightly moisten it - it is better to use a spray bottle. The water should be warm, settled or boiled. The ground should not be too wet. Tamp it down a little with your hands.
  3. Place the seeds on the surface of the prepared soil at a distance from each other, press lightly so that they are in contact for the most part its surface with the ground.
  4. Open your structure with glass or thick plastic film to increase air humidity and create greenhouse conditions.
  5. Open the glass every day to ventilate the seedlings. The surface of the earth should remain constantly slightly moist, but not too wet.
  6. Shoots appear no earlier than after 2 weeks. For a complete pick, prepare a ready-made mixture for succulents or cacti. After transplanting into small pots or cups, place them in a warm place, but out of direct sunlight.
  7. When the size of the shoots reaches 6-7 cm, they are transplanted into pots of 5 cm in diameter using a light soil mixture. For the entire rooting period, maintain the temperature within +15...+17 degrees.

The seeds of the “money tree” are small and do not germinate well, especially without creating greenhouse conditions for them. Therefore, it is more practical to use the methods of cuttings and propagation by leaves yourself, especially without plant breeding skills.

Subtleties of rooting shoots

When propagating Crassula by any of the methods, it is not always easy to achieve good rooting. Even a healthy young seedling or shoot can die due to high soil moisture, too much exposure to direct sunlight or high/low air temperatures.

During the rooting process, you may encounter various difficulties:

  1. The leaves are turning yellow. This often indicates excess moisture and the beginning of the rotting process. If you are rooting cuttings in water, remove them from the glass and dry them for at least two days. If the cutting or leaf is in the soil, reduce watering and add water only when the soil is as dry as possible.
  2. Dark spots. This is a signal that the shoot is infected with a fungal infection, the optimal environment for which is high air and soil humidity. Also reduce watering and ventilate the plant more often, especially if it is in a mini-greenhouse. Lift the film or glass every day for at least 30-50 minutes. Additionally, you can treat the planting material with a fungicide solution.
  3. Leaves fall. The reason for this may be a lack of moisture in the soil. Make sure that the top layer does not dry out or crack. Water frequently, in small portions; you can use overhead watering by spraying with a spray bottle.
  4. If rooting does not occur for a long time, it means that you chose the wrong time for propagation. In winter and autumn, as well as in early spring It takes almost twice as long for roots to appear, since the plant is in the dormant phase. In late spring and summer, the cause may be high temperature and lack of lighting. Raise the temperature to +25 degrees, move the pots with planting material to a brighter place in the room, you can use rooting stimulants.
  5. If the lower part of the trunk, in contact with water or soil, softens and darkens, this indicates a putrefactive process. To save the cutting, remove it from the water, remove the damaged stem until healthy tissue begins, then dry it for a couple of days and place it again in boiled or filtered water with the addition of a fungicide.

How to separate a shoot from the mother plant

In the process of cutting the cuttings and leaves, you must use a sharp tool. Disinfect their surface so that pathogenic microbes do not get on the planting material. You can use garden shears, pruning shears, and knives.

The cut should be oblique and made at approximately a 45 degree angle, leaving 5-7 leaves on the top of the stem. Remove leaves from the lower third of the trunk.

Planting and care in the first days

When the roots of the planting material reach 2-3 cm, they can be planted into separate containers. Select a pot at least 5-7 cm in diameter, use ready-made soil for succulents and cacti, you can also make your own soil mixture based on sand, turf, or leaf soil, which should first be calcined in the oven or disinfected in another way.

Post-procedure care is as follows:

  • place the pot on a windowsill where there is dim sunlight;
  • watering should be moderate, preferably frequent, but in small portions with settled, filtered water at a temperature of +25...+30 degrees;
  • provide access to fresh air by periodically ventilating the room or taking the plant to the balcony or veranda in summer and late spring;
  • spraying is not required, but if a lot of dust and dirt has accumulated on the leaves, the plant can not only be treated with a spray bottle, but also completely bathed in the shower, having previously protected the soil with plastic film.

Then, as the tree grows, replant once a year. This will help the root system grow in the space it needs. More frequent replanting is necessary if you notice roots coming out of the pot from the drainage holes and on the surface of the soil.

In summer, indoor Crassula can be taken out to the balcony, but protected from bright sunlight by darkening or placed in the shade of other large plants to prevent sunburn on the leaves.

To attract money to their wallets, many people keep a plant at home called... well, you guessed it? Of course, this is a “money tree”. There is a belief that when a tree blooms you need to rub the flowers so that your financial condition is as great and better as possible, unfortunately this has not been scientifically proven in any way, and many people keep plants for beauty and comfort in the house, and that if it does not give money, throw it away is it? Of course not, if you bought a “crassula” not only to increase your financial status but also for the interior, then some advice on care and reproduction will help you.

This plant is not very picky and does not require special tropical conditions, but it does not like drafts and temperature changes very much. Watering can be done not very often, but you should not overdry the soil. The soil should be enriched with minerals and fertilizer, then the color of the leaves will be bright and rich. The plant should not be exposed to very bright sunlight; it may stop growing and the leaves will begin to dry out and soon fall off. There are no special growing conditions, the main condition is that the tree, like most succulents, should not be over-watered; as for lighting and humidity, the plant will feel good on most city window sills.

For propagation at home, the leaves themselves are used, yes, you heard right - leaves. To grow a new plant, simply carefully cut off a large, whole (not yellow!) leaf, and plant it in a separate container with soil. Then don’t do anything, the roots will feel the soil and grow on their own, and in about 2-4 weeks the tree leaf will take root completely. You can grow them in more than a few quantities, for the health of the “parent”, i.e. Such procedures will not harm an adult plant in any way.

In more detail, it is better to first dry the cut leaves in a warm, non-sunny place, so you have a better chance that the plant will be accepted. The duration of drying is one day. If the weather or conditions during drying are damp and colder, you can dry the sheet for two days. After drying, you can place the sheet in water, deepening only a third of the sheet maximum. You can immediately plant the leaf in the soil. Another option is to stick a leaf in damp moss and maintain the humidity. The plant loves warmth, so you can additionally make a greenhouse by covering the plant with cling film, a bag, a cup or a jar. Just like an adult plant, the main thing is not to overwater the leaf.

The most interesting factor for gardeners is, of course, when will the tree bloom? Cases of flowering are rare, as it is written in books once every 3-5 years, but this may not happen at all. Obviously, the presence of flowering depends on the conditions under which the fat plant is kept, because it is necessary to distinguish between the conditions of plant survival and the conditions of active growth. Even if you create ideal conditions, the Crassula can bloom for the first time at the age of 7-10 years. But don’t despair, if the plant grows quickly, then with its bright and abundant appearance it will decorate even the darkest corner of the apartment, despite the lack of flowering.

Crassula (Crassula) is one of the most common indoor plants, also known to everyone under the popular name “money tree”. Propagation by cuttings of Crassula is a simple matter, but rooting a leaf and getting a baby is a little more difficult. I really wanted to get a variegated Crassula. And then somehow a couple of leaves of the treasured plant appeared. Before this, I had not been specifically involved in rooting leaves; they themselves took root on the ground, breaking away from the mother plant. I didn’t find any information on this issue on the Internet and... the ineptly carried out rooting process led to the fact that my variegated leaves rotted. I set myself a goal - to root a leaf! So…
Before rooting, the leaf must be dried for several days (at least 2) in a dry and warm place. After the leaf becomes limp, you can begin to root it. I did this in different ways:
1. Take a small bottle of water (you can add any drug that promotes root formation to the water), the lower part of the leaf is immersed in water by 0.5 cm. The bottle is placed in a bright and warm place.
2. The leaf is placed on the edge of the pot, and the lower part is dug into the ground to a shallow depth. The soil should be moist; overmoistening can contribute to leaf rot.
3. The soil can be replaced with clean crushed sphagnum moss. Moss is also kept wet; only the lower part of the leaf is placed in the moss.
The first and third rooting methods are good because you can notice leaf rotting in time. If it starts to rot, don’t despair and throw it away. Cut the leaf above the rotting area, dry it as you did the first time and start all over again. The roots appear after 3-4 weeks, their appearance is possible both earlier and later than these dates, everything will depend on the conditions of detention. In the case of the first rooting method, after the roots appear, the leaf must be planted in the ground. The leaf is planted in the same way as in the second rooting method, without deep penetration and minimal contact of the leaf with the ground.
With all the methods described above, none of the experimental sheets died.

These are the roots produced by a leaf of the variegated crassula in water. The leaf was picked up in a store. Crassula plants were sold in a “killed” state, with long-fallen leaves lying around them.

This leaf began to rot in water, I cut the leaf just above the rotten area, dried it for several days and placed it to root in damp moss. And then these small roots were discovered.

Such a baby grew from a rooted leaf of a fat plant.

Reproduction of Crassula is a topic that interests novice gardeners. Many people know this plant under another name - “money tree”.

They have been successfully growing it for many years, and they do this both in open ground and indoors. If we are talking about growing in the fresh air, then the fat plant can grow up to five meters in height.

Being a succulent, it takes the form of a tree or large bush. Its leaves are similar to coins, which may be why the plant got its second name. Few people know that Crassula (money tree) is capable of blooming. Its flowers can be white, pink or yellow, resembling small umbrellas.

Rules of care andReproduction methods for Crassula

People who grow this flower should know that it loves the sun very much. Throughout the year it requires sunlight for illumination. As for the temperature regime, fluctuations from twelve to eighteen degrees Celsius are ideal for the Crassula.

If we talk about the winter period, then it is enough to maintain the temperature around seven degrees. It is necessary to water the flower only if the soil in the pot has dried three centimeters deep.

In the autumn, the fat plant is watered less frequently, and in winter it is stopped watering altogether. From time to time the plant needs feeding, which must be carried out with special means in the spring.

Reproduction of the fat plant and caring for the plant is important information for those who want to get a healthy flower at home that grows and develops properly.

Speaking about methods of reproduction, we can name three options:

  • Cherenkovy;
  • sheet;
  • seminal.

Let's look at each of them separately, since propagation of the fat woman at home has its own characteristics, and you need to carefully study all the nuances of this process.

Cutting method

Propagation of Crassula by cuttings can proceed in different ways. You can root cuttings either in water or in the ground. In order to approach this process correctly, you first need to select a well-formed process, which has a length of ten to twelve centimeters.

After you have chosen a cutting, you need to carefully separate it from the main plant and put it to rest for 24 hours. After the required time has passed, the cutting must be determined for rooting.

If you decide to use water, then do this:

  • Tear off all the lower leaves on the cutting;
  • fill a suitable container with water;
  • add a means for rapid root development to the water;
  • place the cutting in a container so that it does not sink;
  • Place the cutting with water where it will not receive direct sunlight.

After just three weeks, the first roots will appear on the cuttings, and you can transplant it into the ground.

If you decide to root the cuttings using soil, then proceed as follows:

  • Choose a suitable pot - if these are old pots, then you need to wash them thoroughly with soapy water;
  • The bottom of the container needs to be covered with a layer of sand for drainage, and then filled with soil up to half the pot;
  • to make the perfect mixture, mix garden soil and sand in equal proportions;
  • Using a stick, you need to make a depression in the ground and place the cutting there;
  • fill the remaining space with earth so that the top layer does not reach the edge by two centimeters;
  • do not compact the soil so that air can freely penetrate to the roots;
  • you need to water carefully, only along the very edge of the pot to moisten the soil;
  • You cannot replant the cutting until it is strong and completely rooted; it is recommended to do this a year after the start of the procedure.

Leaf propagation of Crassula

Reproduction of the fat plant by leaves is also carried out in water or in soil. Each option has its own characteristics.

If you prefer to use water, then your actions boil down to the following:

  • We separate the lowest leaf of the plant, which is well developed, and leave it alone away from the sun for 24 hours;
  • select a small container, fill it with water and place a leaf there so that it is immersed half a centimeter;
  • It is recommended to add root to the water;
  • place the container in a room where there is warm air, but no direct contact sunlight;
  • when you notice the appearance of roots, move the leaf to a larger container, and then, after about 30 days, to a pot.

When using land for this type of propagation of the Crassula, you need to follow these tips:

  • Make the necessary mixture for rooting, which consists of peat and sand, irrigate it with water to moisten it;
  • place the selected leaf so that the lower part is a third of the size in the ground;
  • do not pour a large amount of water, because this will cause rotting;
  • create conditions for the leaf that are close to greenhouse conditions, this can be achieved using a glass that is placed on top;
  • if the soil begins to dry out, it is necessary to water the soil, but not much;
  • to prevent the sheet from moving, you need to make a good support for it;
  • when the leaf takes root, it can be planted in a permanent place.

It is worth remembering that after you have grown a new plant, it needs to be replanted regularly. This must be done annually until the plant is four years old.

Seed method

In addition to the two methods listed, you can also use seed planting. This method is rarely used because the waiting time before the flower appears is quite long. This option is mainly preferred by professional flower growers for breeding new varieties.

At home, the cutting and leaf methods are sufficient. The peculiarity of this process is that first the seeds, which are very small for this flower, are sown, and then, after the sprouts appear, the picking is carried out.

It is necessary to wait up to three weeks before the first seedlings appear. Only when the sprouts reach seven centimeters in length can they be transplanted into small pots. This is followed by all the standard plant care activities.

The article discusses the main methods of vegetative propagation of Crassula by cuttings and leaves with rooting in a soil mixture or aqueous solution.

Crassula belongs to the succulents. Numerous species are found in many regions of the world as annual and perennial plants of herbaceous, bushy and tree-like forms (from 0.3 to 5.0 m). They can be grown with equal success in open ground and indoors.

Biological features

Crassula or Crassula is popularly called the money tree due to the similarity of the leaves to coins. The leaves are simple, round, succulent, shiny, densely covering the stems of the bushy plant. It blooms with small flowers of white, pink, yellowish flowers, collected in small umbrellas. When grown indoors, color is rare, which is due to lack of lighting. The root system is powerful and forms aerial roots.

Care

Crassulas are sun lovers. They need bright light all year round. For normal growth and development in summer, an air temperature of +12-+18*C is sufficient. In winter, during the dormant period, the minimum temperature is +7*C. Watering is moderate when the top layer (up to 3 cm) of soil is dry. By autumn, watering is reduced and plants are not watered in winter. During the growing season they like to spray with warm, settled water. Fertilizing is carried out with special fertilizers for succulent plants.

Crassulas are easily propagated vegetatively by cuttings, individual leaf blades and seeds. Propagation of Crassula by seeds does not convey the properties of the plant, is quite difficult to work with and is used much less frequently than vegetative propagation.

Propagation by cuttings

To propagate Crassula from cuttings you need:

  • inspect the plant and select a fairly developed shoot measuring 10-12 cm,
  • Carefully separate from the mother plant and leave to dry for a day.

You can root cuttings in 2 ways - in water and in soil.

Rooting cuttings in water:

  • on the petiole separated from the mother plant, we tear off the lowest leaves,
  • put the prepared cuttings aside,
  • fill the container halfway with water, add root to speed up root formation,
  • we strengthen the cutting in the container so that it does not “drown”,
  • We place the container with the cuttings so that the leaves do not fall under direct sunlight.

After 2-3 weeks, roots appear on the cuttings. The plant is ready for permanent planting.

Rooting cuttings in soil:

  • prepare pots for planting. Wash the old ones with soap and disinfect, soak the new ones in boiling water,
  • Place drainage from shards and sand at the bottom of 7-8 cm of the pot, fill 0.5 volume of the pot with soil mixture,
  • the soil mixture is prepared from clean garden soil and sand in a ratio of 1:1,
  • Make a shallow hole in the pot with a pencil and place the prepared cutting there,
  • top up soil mixture into a pot (do not tamp!), not reaching the top edge 1-2 cm,
  • Water moderately, carefully along the edge of the pot when the top layer of the soil mixture dries out. Excessive moisture causes the death of the cutting.

The following year, the cuttings are transplanted permanently. During rooting, you cannot change the location of the rooting cutting.

Leaf

Reproduction of the fat plant by leaves, as well as by cuttings, can be carried out in water or soil mixture.

Rooting a leaf in water:

  • To root in water, carefully separate the lower, well-developed leaf of the crassula and leave it in the shade for a day,
  • prepare a flat container or bottle and immerse the leaf with its lower end in water with a root of 0.5 cm,
  • move to a warm, bright place without direct sunlight,
  • When the roots appear, carefully transplant into a shallow bowl for greater development of the root system, and after a month into a 5-7 cm pot.

Rooting a leaf in the soil:

  • place peat with sand or wet moss in a bowl, moisten with a solution of water and roots and dig in bottom part sheet (about 1/3). Do not allow excess water, the leaf will rot,
  • cover the buried leaf with a glass, creating greenhouse conditions,
  • Ventilate the greenhouse several times a day (several minutes, slightly opened),
  • spray finely warm water when the top layer of artificial soil dries,
  • Provide support for the sheet.

Rooted cuttings and leaves are transplanted into large containers annually for the first 3-4 years.

Seeds

Crassula propagation by seeds is carried out much less frequently. To obtain an adult plant, propagation of the fat plant by seeds takes a longer period and more time for care. Seed propagation is used mainly by breeders to obtain varieties and hybrids and is practically not used at home.

For amateurs, propagation by seeds at home is carried out as follows:

  • washed and disinfected bowls are filled with a soil mixture of leaf soil and sand, 1.0:0.5 parts, respectively,
  • Crassula seeds are very small. They are sown on the surface of the soil mixture and sprinkled with sand,
  • moisturize and cover with glass to create greenhouse conditions with high air humidity,
  • The bowls are ventilated daily.
  • the top layer of soil should remain moist (not wet),
  • after 2-3 weeks, seedlings appear,
  • for picking seedlings, prepare a soil mixture of turf, leaf soil and sand (0.5:1.0:0.5, respectively),
  • seedlings are planted in bowls with a moist soil mixture and placed in a well-lit place, but without direct sunlight,
  • When the picks reach 5-7 cm, they are transplanted into 5 cm pots with light soil. During the engraftment period, the air temperature is maintained at 15-18*C.

Thus, fat plants can be propagated quite easily and quickly vegetatively by cuttings and leaves. Rooting of cuttings and leaves can be done in water or soil mixture. Seed propagation at home is impractical.

Crassula, which is also called the money tree, is one of the common and rather unpretentious indoor plants. But, like anything, it needs proper care And good conditions. All indoor flowers need to be replanted from time to time, which can be quite a task for certain types of flowers. Let's talk about how to properly transplant and propagate this home flower.

Every plant grows, and sooner or later it becomes cramped in the pot or vase in which it is located. Well, flower More spacious dishes for normal development. In addition, for a long and healthy life of the plant, it is necessary to enrich the soil.

Reproduction of the Crassula at home

Crassula or Crassula is a deciduous plant belonging to the genus of succulents of the Crassula family. Its leaves are arranged in pairs and rotated 90 degrees to each other. Even from one such leaf at home you can grow a whole tree. Can reproduce in two ways: cuttings or leaf rooting. Which to choose?

For the first method stalk you need to put it in water for rooting or immediately plant it in prepared soil in a small container. In both options, the cuttings take root easily.

This is best done in spring or summer. If the soil is suitable: moist and nutritious, the plant will quickly begin to grow and produce side shoots. Growth will slow down in spring or winter.

Another way is leaf rooting. With this method of propagation, a problem such as rotting often occurs. To avoid this, the leaf must first be dried for two or three days. Only after it becomes limp should it be partially buried closer to the edge of the pot so that it rests on it. As soil, you can use a mixture of peat and sand or wet moss. To prevent rotting, it is necessary to avoid waterlogging of the soil.

Transplanting a money tree at home - how to transplant a flower into another pot step by step

Crassula should be transplanted in the spring, the most suitable time is from April to May. It is necessary to replant Crassula no more than once every two years, because the tree grows slowly. Although, if when keeping a flower it has enough lighting, water and fertilizing, then it happens that even after a year the pot becomes too small. Once you discover this, start replanting.

Of course, you can just buy ready-made soil mixture. Or cook it yourself. To do this, you need to take in a ratio of one to one, and to three: turf soil, sand and leaf soil. You also need to add a little clay, ash and humus. Can be used as drainage pebbles, ground brick or expanded clay.

The ideal pot for a money tree would be low enough, but wide.

It is necessary for two reasons.

  1. Crassula grows best in a container that is not very deep, since its root system is small in volume and is located in the upper ball of the soil. Therefore, if the dishes are high, moisture will accumulate at the bottom, which the roots cannot reach. Due to waterlogging of the soil, pathogenic flora can develop, and the plant will get sick. Drainage holes at the bottom will help with this problem.
  2. A fairly large width is necessary to ensure that the large crown of the Crassula is directly above the moist soil.

Crassula is a tropical plant, so it needs moisture. Don't overdo it with watering!

In addition, this shape provides stability to the dishes, which is very important due to the large and heavy crown, which will soon become a decoration of your home. That is why it is better to choose clay or ceramic pot.

After all the preparations, we begin the transplantation.

How can I replant?

What further care does the flower need?

After transplantation, the flower requires attention on your part. Follow these rules to ensure that the fat plant takes root:

Now we need take good care of your pet. We follow simple rules:

  • Don’t forget to loosen the soil to allow air to reach the roots.
  • Avoid direct sunlight so that the leaves do not get burned
  • Water only when the top layer of soil is visibly dry, so as not to over-moisten it.
  • Sometimes spray or wipe the leaves with a damp cloth
  • Maintain moderate temperature
  • From early March to October feed once a month special fertilizer for succulents.

Money Tree It blooms quite rarely, so careful care can speed up such a rare phenomenon as white-pink inflorescences on the Crassula.

The money tree has a scientific name - crassula or crassula. Its leaves look like coins, which is why this plant got its name. It is a symbol of luxury and material prosperity, and in our time it is grown by many housewives and flower growers. Growing and propagating a money tree at home is quite simple and even exciting. Exist different ways reproduction of the Crassula, each of which has its own difficulties and advantages.

Breeding methods

Many people wonder: how does a money tree reproduce? Flower growers use three main methods of propagation:

  • using cuttings;
  • leaf planting method
  • planting seeds

The simplest and most effective propagation method is rooting cuttings. Thanks to this method, the money tree quickly takes root and adapts to new conditions; within a few months there will be a healthy young tree in the pot.
Sometimes leaves are planted in order to get a new fat plant from them, but this method is not always successful, because the leaves can begin to rot, which is why roots do not appear and a new plant does not form. In addition, if you propagate a variety with variegated leaves in this way, the leaves will eventually lose their multicolored color. And the method of planting seeds is considered the longest and most difficult. Vegetative propagation of the money tree by cuttings is the most commonly used and popular propagation method.

Basic breeding rules

  1. Before rooting a cutting or leaf, you must first wither it, that is, leave it in the air for about a day;
  2. Propagation by cuttings is carried out by planting either directly into the ground or into water, to which activated carbon must be added;
  3. When small roots appear on a young plant, it must be transplanted into a pot whose diameter does not exceed 7 centimeters.
  4. Soil for growing a money tree can be purchased at the store, or you can mix sand, turf and leaf soil yourself in equal quantities.
  5. The temperature for rooting should be approximately 16-18 degrees Celsius.
  6. Young plants need to be watered once a day.

Most varieties of Crassula bloom in the same year in which they were planted. But in order to wait for flowering, it is necessary to plant cuttings in early spring, at the end of March or at the beginning of April.

Propagation using cuttings

First you need to choose the right planting material. The best option would be healthy and strong sprouts, the length of which is approximately 10 centimeters. The cuttings must be cut with a clean and sharp tool, after which they should lie in the room for about a day. Next, some experts place the cuttings in water, and some recommend planting them in the ground immediately after cutting. To grow a money tree at home as quickly as possible, you need to do the following:

  • remove all the lower leaves;
  • add a store-bought stimulant to the water, which accelerates the formation of roots;
  • place the cutting in a container so that it does not fall or drown;
  • Place the container with the cutting in a shaded place where direct rays of the sun do not reach.

In a couple of weeks the first roots will appear. This is a sign that it is time to plant the cuttings in separate pots. Before planting them, it is necessary to prepare the soil and containers:

  • wash the pots thoroughly from the inside, then disinfect them;
  • lay drainage material on the bottom of the container in a layer of several centimeters; you can use expanded clay or crushed stone, which also needs to be disinfected;
  • pour half a pot of a mixture of river sand and soil from the garden in equal quantities;
  • Make a small depression in the center into which to place the cutting, then cover it with soil.

You should not fill the soil to the brim; you need to leave about 2 centimeters to the edge of the pot. It is not advisable to compact the soil. Watering should be done very carefully, along the edge of the pot, and only when the soil dries. A planted money tree at home does not need to be moved to different places Houses. Only next year will it be possible to transplant the fat plant to another place.

Propagation of plants using leaves

Flower growers also practice propagation by leaves. To do this, you need to select the lower leaves of the money tree, which have no damage and are absolutely healthy. The leaves need to be cut off and placed outdoors for about a day. After this, you need to root the leaves in water. To do this, you will need a flat container in which the leaves are placed cut side down. A root formation stimulator must be added to the water. The leaves should sink about half a centimeter into the water.
The container with the leaves should be placed in a bright room, but they should not be exposed to direct sun. When the first roots form, you need to transplant the leaves first into shallow containers, and after a while into pots with a diameter of no more than 7 centimeters.
To propagate the money tree, the leaves can be immediately planted in the ground. The substrate can be prepared at home; you need to mix peat, sand or wet moss. This mixture is poured into a small container, watered with water, to which a root formation stimulator is added. The money tree leaf is planted in this substrate at about one-third of its size. You need to water it very carefully, as due to an excess of moisture, the process of rotting of the leaf may begin.
First, propagation of the money tree in this way must be done in a small greenhouse, which can be a cut plastic bottle or glass jar. The planted money tree leaf should be ventilated for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day. The plant must also be regularly sprayed with heated water. If a leaf falls, it can be carefully fixed.

Important! A money tree that was grown from a leaf or from a cutting must be replanted into new pots every year for the first 3-4 years. Every year you need to take a pot 1-2 centimeters larger than the previous one.

Planting seeds

This method of propagating the money tree is most often used by breeders to develop new varieties of this plant. Crassula with unusual shades of leaves is grown from seeds, but this propagation method is quite lengthy. To grow a money tree from seeds you need:

  • prepare one or more containers that need to be thoroughly washed and disinfected;
  • fill the container with soil consisting of 1 part sheet soil and half part river sand;
  • place money tree seeds on the surface and cover with a thin layer of sand;
  • slightly moisten the soil, then cover the entire container with glass or a bag;
  • periodically water the soil so that it is moist all the time, but waterlogging is not allowed;
  • air the seeds every day, increase the airing time when the seedlings begin to grow;
  • in a few weeks the first sprouts will emerge, which, a couple of weeks after their appearance, must be planted in a substrate consisting of 1 part leaf soil, half part turf soil and half part river sand;
  • when young plants are picked, they must be placed in a bright, warm room where direct rays of the sun do not fall;
  • after the young shoots of the money tree grow to 7 centimeters, they need to be transplanted into separate pots, the diameter of which is approximately 5-7 centimeters; they need to be grown in a room where the temperature is 16-18 degrees.

Possible problems during breeding

In principle, propagation of a money tree is quite easy, but certain rules must be followed.

  1. The plant does not tolerate excess moisture very well. The leaves of the money tree are fleshy, they serve as peculiar reservoirs in which liquid accumulates. Therefore, a slight drought will not affect the fat plant in any way, but excessive watering can lead to the death of the plant. If water stagnates in the pot, the roots of the money tree will rot, and subsequently the rot will spread to the stem and leaves. Therefore, excess water from the pan must be poured out immediately.
  2. Choose the right pot. Some inexperienced gardeners immediately plant a money tree in a large pot. In this case, the plant will stretch and grow one-sided. The fat plant needs to be replanted periodically, gradually increasing the diameter of the pot.
  3. Grow the plant in suitable soil. If you plant a money tree in a dense, compacted substrate, it may subsequently die. It is better to choose loose and light soil, suitable ready mix for cacti. You can also mix leaf, turf soil and sand, to which you need to add a little ash and clay.
  4. The money tree does not need to be fertilized often. One feeding for 2-3 weeks is quite enough, or less often. And in the winter months it is better not to fertilize the plant at all.
  5. It is advisable to replant the money tree as rarely as possible. This plant does not tolerate transplants well, after which it slowly adapts to the new soil. It is necessary to replant every year only in the first three years, after which replanting should be done every 3-4 years.
  6. It is necessary to control the growth of the money tree and form its crown, otherwise the plant will be sloppy and disproportionate. It is necessary to periodically prune the fat plant to keep the tree attractive.
  7. The money tree loves a well-lit place. With a lack of light, the plant will become bent and crooked. On a bright windowsill, the tree will actively branch and grow.

Growing difficulties

If the base of the plant’s stem has become soft and the leaves have darkened, this indicates that the tree is over-watered. It is necessary to dig it up, remove the damaged root and stem, and thoroughly disinfect the healthy part of the plant and plant it in new soil.
If the leaves become soft and not shiny, then this also indicates excessive watering. You need to not water the plant at all for some time, and then moisten it once every one to two weeks.
If brown spots begin to appear on the leaves, then the fat plant is affected by a fungus or infection. In this case, special chemicals that can be purchased in the store will help.
Sometimes the plant has an unsightly, bent trunk. This indicates a lack of lighting. Most often, the trunk becomes deformed in winter; at this time the daylight hours are short, so it is necessary to additionally illuminate the plant with a phytolamp.

Caring for the Money Tree at home

Read our article to choose a flower to your liking. Here we will tell you about how to care for Crassula so that it pleases you for many years.

Location and lighting

Intense lighting is the key to the active growth, health and beauty of your pet. The place for the pot must be chosen on a spacious windowsill facing south, southeast or southwest directions or close to them. Almost all types of tree-like Crassula, namely Crassula, respond well to sunlight. The color of their leaves directly depends on the intensity of lighting.

Only in varieties with purely green leaf color from the midday sun can the surface of the leaves become dark brown, and its edges acquire a reddish edging. To prevent this from happening, shade such a flower from direct sunlight in the middle of the day with a curtain or blinds. Other types of Money Tree are not afraid of direct sunlight.

With a lack of lighting, variegated and flowering varieties may lose the bright color of their leaves and not bloom. For uniform formation of the flower crown, it is necessary to periodically turn it towards the light source different sides. IN summer time It is advisable to take all Crassulas out into the open air every year. Choose a place that is well lit but protected from the wind - there they will grow well, and some will bloom.

If your apartment has only north-facing windows, you cannot do without the help of a phytolamp or a fluorescent lamp. Without them, in a short time the plant will lose its decorative effect - the shoots will begin to stretch towards the light, the leaves will thin out, fade and fall off.

Temperature of keeping Money tree

The money tree feels good at normal room temperature within 22 - 28 degrees. IN summer period it can be taken out to the balcony, veranda, or garden. If you don’t have this opportunity, move the pot from the windowsill to the floor - it’s a little cooler there. Changing the temperature during the day only benefits the flower.

How to care for the Money Tree during dormancy

In winter, Crassula prefers to rest. From the end of November to February, it needs to be provided with a lower temperature: 14 - 16 degrees. Remove the pot away from heating appliances, place it near the balcony door, ventilate the room more often (not forgetting that drafts can destroy the plant). Water once a month, do not feed. If you have a heated loggia, Crassula can winter on it at a temperature of 8 - 10 degrees. At high temperatures During winter dormancy, the plant may shed its foliage and lose its decorative effect. Experts say that Crassula can withstand temperatures dropping to 0 degrees. But we do not advise you to do this. But try to provide three months of cool conditions.

We remind you that the plant does not tolerate drafts.

Watering

It is important to know how to water a money tree at home. Crassula reacts strongly to the presence of excess moisture in the soil. We can say that the flower needs little moisture. Never overwater succulents. Their root system is prone to rotting, the leaves will immediately begin to fall, and the lush crown will turn into a bald stem. Therefore, before you start watering, make sure that the pot has drainage holes. If there are no holes in the bottom of your pot, you will have to make them - drill them with a drill or burn them with a hot awl. Now you can water.

In summer, the Money Tree is watered generously once every 2 to 3 weeks. Young specimens are watered more often, especially in hot weather, every week. During this time, the substrate should dry out at least 2 - 3 cm deep into the pot.

If you have an adult plant, you can easily go on vacation without worrying about watering it. The thick, succulent leaves of the Money Tree retain moisture, and the plant can wait a month for your arrival without losing a single leaf.

In the fall, water Crassula every 3 to 4 weeks. Remember that the top layer of the substrate dries out very quickly, especially on a sunny windowsill through glass, but this is a deceptive point. Check a little deeper - most likely the soil around the roots is still damp. Make the next watering when the substrate dries 4 cm deep into the pot.

If the soil is between waterings for a long time does not dry out, which means that it was not chosen correctly or the pot is too large and that is the problem. Excess moisture after watering must be drained from the pan.

IN winter time, if the Crassula is in a cool room on vacation (from November to February), watering is reduced to a minimum. Just make sure that the soil in the pot does not dry out completely. The leaves serve as a signal for watering - they become soft.

Water for irrigation should be used, settled, filtered or boiled, at room temperature or a couple of degrees higher.

Humidity

Indoor humidity does not play a big role in the life of the Money Tree. This plant is a succulent. Its stems and leaves accumulate moisture and consume it during unfavorable dry periods, for example during the heating season. Provided the room is regularly ventilated, it feels great in a city apartment. If for some reason the Crassula finds itself in a humid microclimate, then watering is reduced to a minimum. And this flower does not need spraying, because this can lead to deterioration appearance leaves and even to their rotting.

At the same time, to maintain the cleanliness and elasticity of the leaves, they should be wiped with a damp sponge or cloth. Clean leaves are better saturated with oxygen. As long as the dimensions of the flower allow, you can periodically wash the leaves with a warm shower in the bathroom. Just make sure that water does not get on the substrate; it is better to cover the pot with film.

The soil

What kind of soil is needed for a Money Tree? The soil should not be so much nutritious as it should be loose, moist and breathable. A special soil for succulent plants, which can be purchased at flower shops, is suitable. It is also possible to cook it yourself. To do this, mix 1 part of leaf soil, 3 parts of turf soil, 1 part of humus, 1 part of coarse river sand, 1 part of fine gravel or agroperlite. You can add a little ash. Feng Shui lovers can put two or three coins of different denominations to attract wealth. Add pieces of charcoal or activated carbon to the bottom of the pot along with the drainage to prevent fungal infections.

Pot

The root system of the flower is fibrous, rather weak, and superficial. Therefore, the pot for the Money Tree must be selected according to the width of the roots. In addition, it should be shallow and heavy, preferably clay, so that the growing tree does not topple it. In such a pot, the roots will develop well, delivering moisture and nutrients to the stems and leaves.

Young, fast-growing Crassulas will need to change the pot after a year - to a more spacious pot. Adult specimens require transplantation less often - once every 2-3 years. In adulthood, the Money Tree has a lush crown and a tall, strong trunk. The risk of the pot tipping over increases. During the next plant transplant, we recommend installing a support in the pot and tying the flower to it.

Pay special attention to the drainage layer. Crassula is a very sensitive plant to excess moisture, so a good drainage layer in the pot is essential. Any non-rotting material can be used as drainage - expanded clay, stone, pebbles, cork. Before use, disinfect them.

Top dressing

The money tree needs feeding only during the active growth of stems and leaves - from late spring to mid-August. Three baits are enough during this time. Preference should be given to fertilizers for cacti or succulents. To avoid damage to the root system, fertilizing should be applied in liquid form some time after the main watering.

If the flower was transplanted into a new substrate in the spring, you should not feed it this season. In winter, the plant is also not fed.

Transfer

The best time to transplant Crassulas is considered to be autumn or the end of March - April. Young trees are replanted annually, adults - after two to three years.

So how do you replant a Money Tree? If the time has come, remove the flower from the old pot. Examine it root system. Cut off broken, rotten or too long roots with a sterile instrument. Sprinkle the cut areas with crushed activated carbon. Leave the tree in the air for several hours - let the wounds dry out and heal. Only then start planting in a new pot.

If you do not find any visible damage to the root system, do not disturb the earthen ball, but simply transfer the plant along with the soil into a new pot, which already has a drainage layer and some fresh substrate. Fill all the roots with fresh soil so that there are no voids left in the pot. Do not bury the root collar. Lightly compact the substrate and water.

When buying a plant in a store, do not rush to immediately transplant it into a new pot when you arrive home. Let him live with you for a couple of weeks in a shipping container, in a warm, well-lit place. Let him adapt to new conditions. At this time, eliminate any negative impact on the tree, surround it with attention and love. Remember that it is very important for a young Money Tree to feel the positive energy of the room. Only after this can the transplantation begin.

If there is a need to replant an adult large plant that has a thick trunk and a heavy crown, prepare for it a wider ceramic pot, at the bottom of which place two or three stones to make the pot heavier, make it more stable and prevent the flower from falling. Use the transplant to install a support in the pot and tie the stem to it. After replanting, while the root system is fixed in the new pot, cover the trunk of the tree on top of the substrate with large stones to prevent the Crassula from falling on its side. Place the flower in partial shade for a week and do not disturb it, let the roots become fixed in the substrate. Then the stones need to be removed.

How to form the crown of Crassula

If the flower has already reached the size you need and you do not want the Money Tree to continue growing, stop replanting it in a larger pot. Just change the top layer of substrate in the old pot every year.

The crown of the Crassula itself forms in the form of a tree. But you need to know how to prune a Money Tree at home, because some side branches will grow so large that they will break under their own weight. The end result will be a tree of a completely unsightly shape. If you start pruning a young plant in a timely manner, you can form a neat and beautiful mini-tree of its original appearance.

Start forming a Money Tree in infancy, when the stem and shoots are gray-green in color, and cuts do not leave marks on them. When pruning an adult tree, stumps remain in the pinched areas, which spoil the decorative appearance of the flower.

The essence of crown formation comes down to first removing the lateral shoots until the tree grows to the desired height: the bare stem should be about 15 cm, and the entire plant 25 - 30 cm in height. Now you need to pinch off or cut off the crown with the two upper leaves. After some time, four leaves will appear in their place. Continue doing so. As your tree grows, pinch out the top bud of the shoot in the places where you want new shoots.

Try to have no more than four pairs of leaves on each branch of the Money Tree. If you missed the moment and 6–7 pairs of leaves have formed on the branch, pruning above the growth point of the fourth pair of leaves will help. Sprinkle the cut with crushed charcoal or cinnamon powder. To avoid branches bending to one side, turn the flower to the light with different sides more often.

The money tree belongs to the tree form of Crassula, grows in the form of a tree and gradually sheds its leaves at the bottom of the woody trunk.

This is what your tree should look like: the stem is thick, gray-green. Over time, it becomes lignified from below. On top it is decorated with a neat crown of thick leaves of dark green or silver color, with a glossy surface, with a reddish edging or spots of the same tone. The height of the flower can be whatever you want - from 50 cm to one and a half meters.

The Money Tree can also be given the appearance of a bonsai. This will take some time, perhaps more than one year. First, you should grow a strong tree whose trunk reaches the thickness you need. Then you will cut it off radically and wait patiently for new branches to grow. You will cut off almost all the leaves of these branches - leaving only those at the very ends. So, gradually, you will form the desired crown of your pet, and the Money Tree will be the main decoration of your interior.

Bloom

Crassula (Money tree) rarely blooms at home and only in adulthood (about 10 years). Crassula, with a high degree of probability, can only be encouraged to bloom by ideal maintenance conditions: intense lighting all year round, a long cold winter and regular replanting of the plant into new soil. If a miracle happens, then in the spring you will be able to see the Money Tree bloom. Flowering will continue for two to three months.

This is how the money tree blooms

Numerous flowers, collected in loose inflorescences in the form of umbrellas, will appear at the ends of young mature shoots (therefore, pinching and pruning in order to form a crown should be done in early spring, so that after pruning these shoots appear, so that they grow over the summer and ripen until autumn , when the laying of flower buds begins for flowering next year). The Money Tree's flowers are very small, star-shaped. white with a pinkish or greenish tint.

The flowering tree will emit a strong sweet aroma throughout the flowering period. Faded inflorescences should be removed so that the plant does not waste energy on producing and growing seeds. Try to properly care for your beautiful Crassula, and we hope that it will delight you with beautiful blooms.

Money Tree Reproduction

Propagation by cuttings and leaves

Crassula is most often propagated using cuttings. Even an accidentally broken twig can be suitable for you as planting material. We recommend that if propagation is necessary, do not break the branches, but carefully cut the stem or leaf cuttings with a clean knife. Powder the cut area with crushed activated carbon to prevent infection. Give the wound time to air dry. Crassula has poisonous leaves, so place the cutting in a place where animals and children cannot reach it.

Then, place the cutting for rooting in a slightly damp substrate to a depth of 5 cm. If you are rooting a leaf, the depth of its immersion in the substrate should be 1 cm. It is better to carry out this operation in the spring, in March - April. It would be good if you set up a mini greenhouse for the seedlings. Use a mixture of peat and sand as a substrate. The greenhouse needs to be ventilated and the soil moistened with a fine spray bottle if necessary. Maintain the rooting temperature within 18 – 22 degrees. Usually, rooting of cuttings occurs quickly and without problems. How to plant a Money Tree shoot? As soon as you see that your young tree has begun to grow and develop and has reached 10 cm, transplant it into a pot of suitable size, place it in a well-lit place in partial shade and care for it as you would an adult plant.

Very often, cuttings are rooted in a glass of warm, settled water. To prevent the stem from rotting, add an activated carbon tablet to the water. And to make roots appear faster, a solution of a root formation stimulator, for example Kornevin or Zircon, is dripped in there. After stable roots appear, the cutting can be transplanted into its own pot.

Propagation using seeds

Another way to propagate the Money Tree is through seeds. This method is less common and less effective. If you decide to get your copy of Crassula this way, we will help you. Prepare a substrate for succulens, a container, and seeds. Place a layer of moist soil at the bottom of the container, place the Crasula seeds on it, and cover the lid. If necessary, ventilate and moisten the substrate using a fine spray bottle with warm water. The best time to sow seeds is February. In two weeks, wait for the first shoots to appear. After sprouts appear en masse, move the greenhouse to a bright, warm place and provide additional lighting so that they do not stretch out. Start opening the lid of the container, first for a while, and then remove it completely. As soon as the sprouts become stronger, they can be transplanted into separate small pots. In the first year, the plant is not given a period of rest - let it grow and gain strength.

Money Tree Diseases

Crassula rarely gets sick. She has a pretty strong immune system. However, if you seriously neglect the rules of keeping her indoors, she will get sick. Let's consider some such cases.

  • If brown spots appear on the leaves of the plant, or if the leaves begin to rot, these are signs of a fungal disease. The reason is excessive humidity of the air and substrate. For the same reason, the Money Tree may experience leaf fall and become bald in a short time. Treat the affected plant with a fungicide containing copper. Adjust the frequency of watering and the quality of water used.

  • Why do the Money Tree leaves fall? Sudden shedding of leaves in the summer indicates that you are not watering the plant enough or watering it too much. cold water. If the Crassula sheds its leaves every two to three years without visible reasons- this is the norm.

  • If the leaves of the flower are covered with black spots, pay attention to the location of the pot. If it is standing in the sun, the plant is probably sunburned. Move it to another place or shade it. If the Crassula spent the rest period in a dark place, then in the spring it must be accustomed to sunlight again, gradually.
  • If the Money Tree begins to dry out and wither, this is a sign of suffocation. The plant is hot. Take it out on Fresh air or ventilate the room, wipe the leaves wet wipe, spray the surrounding air with cool water.
  • Why doesn't the money tree grow? It may need to be transplanted into a larger pot. Perhaps you haven't fed the plant for a long time. Perhaps there are insect pests in the roots. Perhaps the roots simply rotted from frequent and abundant watering. Either way, replant the Money Tree in a new pot and new substrate. If you find pests, pre-treat the roots with some insecticide: actara, fitoverm, actellik. If there are no living roots, the plant cannot be saved. Try rooting its shoots or leaves.
  • If brown spots form on the leaves, these are most likely dry, healed wounds from insect pests. Cosmetic defect, but nothing dangerous.
  • Excess moisture may cause the plant trunk to darken. Stop watering for a while. After a couple of weeks, the substrate and the roots in it will dry out well, and the Crassula can recover. If the flower still disappears, take it out of the pot and inspect the roots. If they are all black and soft, the flower cannot be saved. Cut off the top and try to root it. If only part of the roots is affected, remove them and all rotten parts of the plant. Treat with fungicide or crushed coal. Plant in a new container with new substrate. And watch the watering schedule.
  • The roots may partially die off if there is no watering for a long time during the hot season (for example, the owners were on vacation). When watering is resumed, the plant will almost certainly grow new roots, if root rot has not occurred.
  • If the leaves of the Money Tree become soft and lose turgor, then this looks like insufficient watering or lack of nutrients in the soil. Rather, water the plant with warm, settled water. After watering, if necessary, fertilize with fertilizer for cacti or succulents.
  • If you water regularly, the substrate is constantly wet, and the leaves wither and turn yellow, then the problem is in the root system of the flower. Most likely, the roots have begun to rot. This can happen for several reasons:
  1. from excess moisture in the soil;
  2. from an incorrectly selected substrate;
  3. from watering with cold tap water;
  4. from a plant's pot being too large.
  • If the Flower begins to stretch out or fall over on one side, it means that it does not have enough lighting. If left untreated, over time the plant's stem will bend and it may break and die.
  • If the Crassula trunk begins to thin and the lower leaves fall off, check the temperature conditions of the flower, the presence of drafts and the frequency of watering. In addition, fresh air in the room is extremely important for the plant - do not forget to ventilate regularly. In the warm season, take the plant outdoors. And never water the plant with cold tap water.

If you notice in time that Crassula is not healthy, try to cure it. Remove the flower from the pot. Free the roots from the substrate. If necessary, rinse them under water. Inspect the roots. Cut off rotten areas with a clean tool. Treat the wounds with crushed activated carbon or cinnamon powder. If the damage is severe, treat with a suitable fungicide. Keep the treated plant in the air for some time - let the wounds heal. Then plant the flower in a new pot suitable for the size of the root system in new soil for succulents. Adjust the frequency of watering. Use only settled or boiled water. We hope that you will be able to save your Money Tree.

Pests

In any case, the appearance of insects is a very alarming signal. They multiply quickly, form huge colonies, and suck juices from leaves and stems. We recommend using special preparations - insecticides, such as Aktara, Actellik, Fitoverm and others, of which there are a huge variety in special stores. Read the recommendations for using each drug. Perhaps one time will not be enough to get rid of all individuals, their larvae and eggs.

Conclusion

In this article we told you how to grow a Money Tree beautiful and healthy. If you master the simple rules of caring for the Crassula - you will water it on time, feed it, bathe it, do its hair (trimming), change its outfits (pots) and take it out into nature, the flower will give you all its best decorative and healing qualities, become a healer and decoration of your home, a talisman of its well-being and financial condition for many years. In some families, Money Trees bring joy to more than one generation of household members.

Hence, intensive watering such a plant is not only unnecessary, but also extremely harmful.

In those desert regions where succulents grow free, a lot of sun– and when keeping at home, this must be taken into account.

There is also optimal temperature regime, associated with weather conditions typical of the Crassula’s native places.

In addition, Crassula, like most plants not spoiled by nature, is highly viable and very easy to reproduce parts of the stem, individual leaves and seeds.

In general, the plant is an unpretentious pet.

Growing at home

Lighting

In order for the money tree to feel at home in your apartment, it should be provided with bright, but still not too intense natural light.

On southern windows, especially in summer, the plant will have to be shaded or set somewhat deeper into the room; It’s even better to put the fat plant on the balcony - however, even here you need to take care that the plant is not located in the sun.

Growing Crassula on south-eastern windows is considered optimal: there is light in the required quantity and quality, and the commandment of Feng Shui is fulfilled, because the south-east is considered the sector of wealth.

Temperature

Best spring-summer temperature range for Crassula – 20-25 degrees.

In autumn the temperature drops, and in winter period it is good to place the plant where enough light, but the temperature does not rise above 15 degrees and does not drop to plus four.

Sudden temperature changes, as well as drafts, harm Crassula.

Priming

Basic soil composition requirements for successfully growing money trees: good water and air permeability, slightly acidic reaction, sufficient nutritional value. You can use several options for such soil mixtures.

Ready-made cactus soil.

A universal primer with a generous dose – up to a third of the volume – of washed river sand.

A mixture of turf and leaf soil, as well as peat and sand (all components equally) with brick chips and pieces charcoal. For older plants, the content of turf soil is doubled.

Peat mixed with sand in a 1:1 ratio is used for preliminary rooting during vegetative propagation.

At the bottom of a shallow but fairly wide container, before filling it with soil mixture, be sure to place a significant drainage layer(minimum thickness – 2 cm).

Watering

An inhabitant of semi-deserts, which stores water in fleshy stems and plump leaves, will not benefit from an abundance of moisture.

When caring for a fat woman you need moderate watering, the frequency of which varies seasonally.

In spring and summer, during the period of active growth, this succulent is watered once or twice a week, paying attention to the condition of the soil substrate: after the soil has dried on top, do not water immediately, but after 2-3 days.

IN autumn-winter period, when kept in a cool place, the fat plant is watered even less frequently, from two to once a month without allowing the leaves to wrinkle.

If the winter is warm, you will need to water more often.

In all cases it is taken well for watering settled water at room temperature.

Periodically, the leaves of the Crassula should be free from dust; at the same time, they can be sprayed and then wiped or washed in the shower, protecting the soil in the container from excess moisture.

Top dressing

The fat woman needs feeding only during the period active development stems and foliage - from April to August inclusive.

During these spring and summer months twice a week the plant should be fed with a complex mixture for succulents and cacti.

You can also use complex fertilizer for home floriculture, but be sure to with reduced nitrogen content. An excess of nitrogen compounds, firstly, causes intensive growth of green mass and overdeveloped side shoots can break off from their own gravity. Secondly, nitrogen compounds in combination with humidity reduce the resistance of succulents to rot.

It is better to apply fertilizers after watering, on wet soil.

In the autumn-winter period, the succulent, especially when low temperature, practically do not feed.

Bloom

Crassula flowering at home is a rare occurrence.

Plants usually bloom mature age, starting from seven to ten years old.

In order for white, pinkish or yellowish inflorescences with a sweet smell to bloom on Crassula, you must follow optimal conditions for its cultivation.

There is also an observation that there is a relationship between flowering and the time of planting the cutting from which the succulent is grown: Early spring money tree cuttings produce flowering specimens, but summer ones do not.

To stimulate budding, some gardeners use stress effects on Crassula: keep it in winter at the minimum permissible humidity and extremely low temperatures(about plus six degrees)

Diseases and pests

The money tree itself is resistant to diseases, like any tenacious succulent. The main danger is excess moisture, especially when watering with cold water.
Then the leaves turn pale and droop, fungal infections occur and the stems rot at the base. Particularly dangerous rotting in the root area.
If such a process has begun, then in order to save the specimen, you need to cut off the healthy top and root it in a separate container with fresh soil, get rid of everything else and strictly monitor the watering regime in the future.

Excess sun leaves burns on the leaves– brown drying spots appear on them. The succulent should be shaded or rearranged, and damaged leaves should be removed.

Of the pests that settle on the money tree mainly Mealybugs.

If there are only a few of them, you can remove the scale insects one by one using a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. A radical means of exterminating these insects is systemic insecticides. Very rarely there are repeated massive attacks by scale insects, in which the last resort remains: save a healthy cutting for rooting, destroy everything else, disinfect the pot and wash the window sill well.

Reproduction

A hardy, viable succulent reproduces in almost all possible ways: seeds, individual leaves, cuttings and shoots.

Seeds

Crassula sowing is carried out in early spring into shallow clay bowls with drainage holes, filled with a moistened mixture of leaf soil and sand in a 2:1 ratio.

The seeded bowls are covered with glass or plastic film, kept at a temperature of 15-18 degrees, ventilated daily, slightly opened for 15-20 minutes, and the soil moisture is maintained by spraying.

Shoots usually appear in two weeks.

After the formation of the first pair of leaves, the seedlings are planted at a distance of at least a centimeter from each other, and when they reach a height of 5-7 cm, they are settled in separate “apartments”.

This method of propagating fatworts at home is quite labor intensive and is used mainly by breeders interested in obtaining hybrid forms of these succulents.

Leaflets

Still, how to grow a money tree? A money tree can grow from a single leaf. This is especially convenient for those who believe in miracles and secretly pinch off a thick, developed leaf from the money tree in a rich person's house.

A leaf separated from the plant is needed dry in the shade for a day, and then root.

Eat several rooting methods Crassula leaf.

First, simplest: Place on a moistened soil surface and wait until thin white hairs of roots appear on the lower, ground-facing side of the leaf, and grains of future buds appear on the outer side. The soil should not dry out; To do this, you can build a greenhouse made of plastic film, which should be ventilated daily.

You can place the bottom end of the sheet in Kornevin solution, and after the roots appear, plant it in a shallow bowl with a lightweight substrate and cover with plastic wrap. Ventilate the greenhouse regularly. Then, as it grows, place it in a shallow pot with a standard soil mixture for Crassula.

In addition, the leaf takes root and just in the water, to which coal powder is added to prevent rotting. Further steps - sequential planting in the soil - are described above.

Cuttings

The money tree easily and readily propagates by cuttings.

The part of the developed stem is optimal for such propagation. 10-12 cm long. Cuttings can also be the top of a succulent, which needs to be saved from rotting roots or pest invasion, and parts cut off during the formation of the crown.

After separation from the mother stem, the cutting with the lower leaves removed is dried for a day or two, depending on its thickness.

The main danger that can await a prepared cutting is excess moisture and rotting.

Therefore, if carried out preliminary rooting in water, Crushed coal and/or a root formation stimulator must be added to it.

Roots are formed in two weeks, after which the cuttings are planted, buried approximately halfway, in a shallow pot with a diameter of 5-7 cm with a drainage layer and appropriate soil. Cover with a plastic cup. This greenhouse is ventilated, the soil is moistened, and after the formation of new shoots the cup is removed.

To avoid problems with excess water, many gardeners Immediately place the cutting in the soil mixture, bypassing the water stage of rooting - and, as a rule, this method is also successful.

By shoots

The fat woman, focused on survival in the harsh conditions of semi-deserts by all means available to her, prepares herself for “landing” into the soil shoots equipped with aerial roots.

So, how to plant a money tree shoot? These roots, initially white, dry out after some time, but the shoots still do not lose vitality and can be, after separation from the mother plant, planted in the soil both with fresh roots - then the shoot of the money tree will take root faster, and with dried ones - in this case, the same methods are used as when propagating by cuttings and leaves.

The money tree (crassula, crassula) demonstrates an amazing willingness to produce more and more viable specimens, which, in suitable conditions, develop into magnificent plants.

One can only hope that the feng shui masters know what they are talking about when they draw a parallel between the fat plant abundantly dotted with shiny green leaves and the never-ending stream Money on the farm of its owner.
