A native of the city of Nishapur in Khorasan (now Northern Iran), Omar was only son, a camper who gave him an excellent education. He was capable and smart boy, grasped everything on the fly. At the age of 8 he already knew the Koran from memory, deeply studied astronomy, mathematics and philosophy.
At the age of 10, Omar learned Arabic language. At the age of 12 he became a student of the Nishapur Madrasah (Muslim educational institution). He brilliantly completed a course in Islamic law and medicine, received the qualification of a hakim, that is, a doctor. But medical practice was of little interest to Omar. He enthusiastically studied the works of the famous mathematician and astronomer Sabit ibn Kurra, as well as the works of Greek mathematicians.
Khayyam's childhood fell on the cruel period of the Seljuk conquest Central Asia. Many people died, including a significant part of the scientists. The severity of fate in these times prevents you from completely surrendering to perfection and in-depth study science. At the age of sixteen, Khayyam experienced the first loss in his life: during the epidemic, his father died, and then his mother. Omar sold his father's house and went to Samarkand. At that time it was a scientific and cultural center recognized in the East.
In Samarkand, Khayyam, after several speeches at debates, impressed everyone with his erudition so much that he was immediately made a mentor. Around 1069, Omar Khayyam wrote a treatise "On the proofs of problems in algebra and allukabala."
Four years later, he left Samarkand and moved to Bukhara, where he began working in book depositories. During the ten years that the scientist lived in Bukhara, he wrote four fundamental treatises on mathematics.
In 1074 he was invited to Isfahan, the center of the Sanjar state, to the court of Sultan Malik Shah. Omar becomes the Sultan's spiritual mentor. In addition, Malik Shah appointed him head of the palace observatory, one of the largest in the world. Working in this position, Omar Khayyam not only continued his studies in mathematics, but also became a famous astronomer.
With a group of scientists, he developed a fundamentally new solar calendar, which was officially adopted in 1079 and formed the basis of the Iranian calendar, which is still in force as an official one. Here he wrote "Comments on the difficulties in introducing the book of Euclid" (1077)
However, in 1092, with the death of Sultan Malik Shah, who patronized him, his Isfahan period ended. Accused of godless freethinking, the poet was forced to leave the Seljuk capital. In 1097 he worked as a doctor in Khorsan and wrote a treatise in Farsi "On the universality of being." The last 10-15 years of his life, Omar Khayyam spent hard in seclusion in Nishapuri, had little contact with people and read a lot.
According to historians, in last hours life of Omar Khayyam, reading the "Book of Healing" by Ibn Sina (Avicenna), felt the approach of death. He reached the "One in the Many" section, laid a golden toothpick between the sheets, and closed the folio. He called his relatives and students, made a will, and after that he no longer took any food or drink. The wisdom of life from Omar Khayyam became known thanks to Edward Fitzgerald, who found a notebook with quatrains and translated them first into Latin language, and then - in 1859 - into English.
These poems struck the English poet with their wisdom, deep philosophical overtones and at the same time lyricism and subtlety. “After several centuries, old Khayyam continues to ring like real metal,” said Edward Fitzgerald admiringly.
